Whether it was Taker coming back to avenge his loss 7’years ago and a callback to the rock and him in the attitude era, cena with thrice in a lifetime, or Seth playing the shield music and taking the shot for Cody, it wrapped up every story with a finish that made me love professional wrestling in a way I haven’t since the attitude era.
This was a great reminder that wrestling is supposed to be fun. As someone who also grew up during the attitude era, this was the most fun I have had watching wrestling in a very very long time.

Hell Taker has history with Wrestlemania itself. Plus Taker is just fun to see when he pops up. So in the story of Roman's past coming back to haunt him, Taker does make sense. Two things can be true at the same time.

Seth Rollins really sacrificed everything to end the Bloodline/Roman’s reign. He had the crap beaten out of him on both nights, lost both of his matches and his title for Cody to win, if you really look at it from a character perspective, I think he came out looking fantastic. He kept his promise and gave EVERYTHING. MVP.
I love the character growth of Seth in this, all the speculation of him turning on Cody. In character maybe thoughts of it would creep in, but in the end he’s a new Seth rollins, one who’s not a sniveling and conniving bastard but one who now was a fighting champion. Someone always overshadowed by Roman despite Seth coming out on top technically each time. And maybe out of pure spite or genuine growth, maybe a combination of both, gave up everything of his own in order to stick it to Roman and cost him just as much. It’s poetic, it’s a story of brothers who found each other not through birth but battle, and it’s a story of betrayal and revenge that just makes pro wrestling so good.
100%, I haven't been a huge fan of him since I started getting back into wrestling over the past year, but every single action he took at Wrestlemania made me respect him more. Even when he lost to Drew, he lost with dignity and admitted that Drew earned it, then coming back in that shield gear instead of one of his weird fancy outfits for the final match.. I just really hope he keeps going in this direction, he might become one of my favourites.
Samantha added to the moments too, in some of the matches. Especially the Sami/Gunther and Cody/Roman. There's something absolutely beautiful about the matches being so amazing that the announcer is affected like we all were.
Rollins and McIntyre put on a finisher fest and somehow made absolute magic with it what an underrated match, also this is one of the few times that the finisher fest makes sense
Totally agree with the Gunther match. I was not invested at all, thought it would be a squash match, but that intro for Sami got me cheering for Sami instantly
WWE truly subverted expextations with Gunther vs Sami Zayn, we went into this match thinking that Sami would fail to beat Gunther who is the second most dominant champion in WWE but the Underdog from the Underground proved us naysayers wrong.

Bro I’m going to miss Roman as champion. Roman literally got me back into wwe with the bloodline storyline. When that ref hit 3 my heart literally dropped to my ass. But hopefully Cody’s reign could be something legendary as well. Matches with Gunther , Randy , La night , Seth , cm punk , and aj would cooooook.

Being in the stadium for night 2 was amazing seeing one of the best opening matches and the most overbooked match I’ve ever seen as the main event witnessing history with the rest of the crowd was amazing
To be honest, I would like to take a moment to appreciate the women matches we had this WM.....phenomenal showcase by all! Idk why WWE never gave us the champion Iyo Skye which she showcased at the WrestleMania.... That match was crazy good... One of my fav of the whole show.... Both of the wrestlers looked so good with their chemistry and Iyo looked like a unrealistic monster who was just bringing some crazy reversals out of nowhere ❤❤ This was one of my favourite WM... Not because we had so many legendary matches... But for the first time I actually felt all the women matches collectively were way more fun and had no low points during the 2 day show. On the 1st day the tag team match between damage cntrl and bianca's team was soo fun... It managed to finally overcome the dead crowd for me cause i was enjoying whatever these guys were doing.... I love this time, wrestling is finally soooo cool again ❤❤

As someone who left pro wrestling behind for years and came back when someone told me this 3 man team the SHIELD was doing something special. watching their start to the plan B moment Wrestlemania 31 the big return of the shield roman having to take time for Cancer and then heim comming back as the biggest heel we had seen in ages. all of that story was wrapped up yesterday as the shield music hit. and even tho it was impossible to get moxley in. I was in tears. thank you seth thank you roman and thank you Dean/jon for making my childhood obsession come back and turning it up to 100. CANT WAIT for what comes next

Eaaily the best Mania Main Event in years. I loved that overbooked match. But there were two things i like the most on that match. First, Roman using a Crossroads on Cody to get a 2 count, telling (not directly IN camera, but loud) everyone that this move sucked. Pretty genius heel move! Second, Roman chooses revenge, hitting Rollins in the back with a chair instead of hitting Cody with it and retain... ...and lost! That detail was awesome, pure cinema gold
I got fully into wrestling before WM39 and WM40 has made me a lifetime fan. My favourite wrestler atm is Ilja so i hope to see Ilja vs Gunther sooner rather than later due to the previous work they have had together.

From what i watched and heard from youtubers, podcasters and other stuff, CM punk changed WWE for the best during its worst period and the 'pipebomb' moment was catalyst for that. Despite having to watch it at 1AM in England, i do enjoy watching wrestling and i am gonna give other companies a go. (Idk about AEW with how bad that is run but they have great wrestlers so maybe).

This is frightning how similar this era is to attitude era.. 1. The guy comes from the rival comapny 2. wins royal rumble twice in a row 3. Almost wins the first wrestlemania main event 4. A stupid decision by the owner of the comapny kicks off the new era aka montreal screwjob 5. A main stream superstar comes to wwe i.e tyson and rock and joins the heel faction 6. People are talking more about the superstar and the rumble winner and not about the wwe champion 7. Finally, the austin and cody wins the wwe championship and becomes the face 8. (This is maybe) The former heel champion i.e hbk and roman goes into this short term retirement and comes back as a super baby face.
I thought the night 1 main event was gonna top night 2's because of the rock's stand out, but even with immensly high expectations, night 2 blew me out of the water and had me teary eyed. I seriously think Romans entrance was the greatest in mania history, the moment Cody won was the most emotional since Macho Man and Elizabeth reunited, and Roman/Cody was the single biggest match since Austin/Rock II. What a night, and to take from Wrestlingifs, what a time to be alive.
That Sami Zayn Brain Buster instantly made me a fan. Gunther is so big and the fact that he nailed that so beautifully. Kudos to him. great work on both those guys ends

This is definetly a top 5 wm, even top 3. But i'm not gonna let recensy b speak for me, there are some things i didn't like, the brother match, the finisher fest, the street fight, and some results like the sami zayn win or the ending of the tag match of lwo. Outside of that, pretty good show
I totally agree with this take. Night 1 def holds this WrestleMania down. It's a great show but then again I feel like only a few matches would be deemed rewatchable.

I'm a little biased, because I'm a big fan of both wrestlers, but my favorite match of WM 40 was Sami Zayn vs GUNTHER.! A PERFECTLY EXECUTED "the underdog rises" story of a match.
I think the WWE missed an opportunity in the Cody v Roman match. I think you would have had an all time pop if they hit the breaking glass and Stone Cold came out instead of the Undertaker, but Taker was probably a very close second best option.
It feels like Austin was the original plan that fell through so the last minute decision was to get Undertaker, because Triple H “coincidentally” posted the Cody vs Roman promo on Twitter at 3:16 PM
Best part is that Gargano's insane slingshot DDT to the table had Druski doubting the "fake" allegations. If you can make a famous guy doubt the fake accusations, you're making room for a casual audience(say Druski's fans) to believe in pro wrestling.

My brother in law and I both watched wrestling in the 90s, but fell out of touch with it in the early 2000’s. Last year, as an excuse to hang out and catch up over a couple beers, we watched Night 1 of WrestleMania 39 together. We went in completely cold, having not followed it in years. HHH’s booking hooked us back in, and we followed it ever since and watched both nights of WrestleMania 40 together. What a payoff. I never thought I’d be a wrestling fan ever again, but here I am. Can’t wait to see whatever comes next unfold!
That Ladder match reminded me of the era of Hardyz Vs Dudleyz Vs Edge & Christian, and I was so here for it. You're 100% right about the Uso fight, it needed.. SOMETHING. My friends and I watching were actually almost hopeful that there might be at least a reconciliation when Jimmy was down on his knees, and then when it turned out to be just another fake out, that was honestly kinda dull and disappointing.
This is now one of my top favorite wrestlemanias I've seen (along WM 39) after i got back to WWE since wrestlemania 27 (so bad made me quit!). I had so much fun! My cousins came over for night 2 and they barely /know next to nothing of the current roster 😮 So even they had fun watching Triple Threat match and Roman vs Cody rematch! It may be my favorite Main Event 😮 match, and rematch since my top 2 superstars did that in 2010 between Undertaker and Shawn Michaels 😢 The entrances, the 1 year hype, fight choreography, audience support, interferences.... but the surprises 😮😢😊 with John Cena and Undertaker 😇💜 And the 10-15 minute celebration of beating the Tribal Chief ☝️ this was excellent 👏 I'm very excited to see Cody being the new face of WWE of this decade, just like Cena when he won in 2005 😢

I was extremely satisfied seeing R Truth FINALLY win a championship at wrestlemania. He deserved it more than anyone else imo because he's been there for so long and held the company together during the lame PG era.

The confined Main Event pt1&2 was some of the best work of all time. So overbooked but all for it when it produces reactions like that. On a side, loved the walkout segments for Sami and Owen which could be done more (reminiscent to Michaels and Bret Hart Survivor Series 97)

LA Knight can’t sell to save his life. AJ was working his leg all match and he just no sold all of it. Charisma is an A+ but he’s mid af when it comes to ring psychology and selling limb targets.
After WM40, I officially discredit the opinion of anyone who says “this era sucks, it’s not as good as the attitude era” I’ve lived through the IWC during the Ruthless Aggression era and I vividly remember fans trashing it because it wasn’t the Attitude Era, only to praise it when it was over. I refuse to let this era pass by without enjoying it. We’re in the “good ol’ days” right now.
I never thought wm17 can be topped again but man wm40 topped that, for me its the greatest wrestlmania of all time & yeah greatest main event of all time.

Fully agree. Roman vs Cody was the greatest match I have ever seen. Every aspect from the buildup to the ring entrances to the performance was flawless. A massive thank you to the Rock whose contribution elevated this storyline incredibly. Moving forward, Cody should be the face champion while Drew is the heel champion. Anything else means WWE is losing money and squandering potential.

I don't think that the main event was even close of a 5 star match, let alone only considering the first part with only the two guys. But I need to agree that the ending was PITCH PERFECT in every aspect. And Taker appearance was the most genius move that I saw in a WM main event.

100%, I haven't been a huge fan of him since I started getting back into wrestling over the past year, but every single action he took at Wrestlemania made me respect him more. Even when he lost to Drew, he lost with dignity and admitted that Drew earned it, then coming back in that shield gear instead of one of his weird fancy outfits for the final match.. I just really hope he keeps going in this direction, he might become one of my favourites.
Samantha added to the moments too, in some of the matches. Especially the Sami/Gunther and Cody/Roman. There's something absolutely beautiful about the matches being so amazing that the announcer is affected like we all were.
The cash-in announcement as well. She sounded legit shocked as the audience and it added that much more to the moment.

Totally agree with the Gunther match. I was not invested at all, thought it would be a squash match, but that intro for Sami got me cheering for Sami instantly
WWE truly subverted expextations with Gunther vs Sami Zayn, we went into this match thinking that Sami would fail to beat Gunther who is the second most dominant champion in WWE but the Underdog from the Underground proved us naysayers wrong.

Bro I’m going to miss Roman as champion. Roman literally got me back into wwe with the bloodline storyline. When that ref hit 3 my heart literally dropped to my ass. Idk why WWE never gave us the champion Iyo Skye which she showcased at the WrestleMania.... That match was crazy good... One of my fav of the whole show.... Both of the wrestlers looked so good with their chemistry and Iyo looked like a unrealistic monster who was just bringing some crazy reversals out of nowhere ❤❤
This was one of my favourite WM... Not because we had so many legendary matches... But for the first time I actually felt all the women matches collectively were way more fun and had no low points during the 2 day show. On the 1st day the tag team match between damage cntrl and bianca's team was soo fun... It managed to finally overcome the dead crowd for me cause i was enjoying whatever these guys were doing.... I love this time, wrestling is finally soooo cool again ❤❤

As someone who left pro wrestling behind for years and came back when someone told me this 3 man team the SHIELD was doing something special. watching their start to the plan B moment Wrestlemania 31 the big return of the shield roman having to take time for Cancer and then heim comming back as the biggest heel we had seen in ages. all of that story was wrapped up yesterday as the shield music hit. and even tho it was impossible to get moxley in. Eaaily the best Mania Main Event in years. I loved that overbooked match. But there were two things i like the most on that match. First, Roman using a Crossroads on Cody to get a 2 count, telling (not directly IN camera, but loud) everyone that this move sucked. Pretty genius heel move! Second, Roman chooses revenge, hitting Rollins in the back with a chair instead of hitting Cody with it and retain... ...and lost! That detail was awesome, pure cinema gold

From what i watched and heard from youtubers, podcasters and other stuff, CM punk changed WWE for the best during its worst period and the 'pipebomb' moment was catalyst for that. 4. A stupid decision by the owner of the comapny kicks off the new era aka montreal screwjob
5. A main stream superstar comes to wwe i.e tyson and rock and joins the heel faction
6. People are talking more about the superstar and the rumble winner and not about the wwe champion
7. Finally, the austin and cody wins the wwe championship and becomes the face
8. (This is maybe) The former heel champion i.e hbk and roman goes into this short term retirement and comes back as a super baby face.

It might be just me. But this show didn’t feel long or dragged on forever. I overall enjoyed wrestlemania 40.
I thought the night 1 main event was gonna top night 2's because of the rock's stand out, but even with immensly high expectations, night 2 blew me out of the water and had me teary eyed.
I seriously think Romans entrance was the greatest in mania history, the moment Cody won was the most emotional since Macho Man and Elizabeth reunited, and Roman/Cody was the single biggest match since Austin/Rock II. What a night, and to take from Wrestlingifs, what a time to be alive.
17 was the best ever but i can also understand people being hyped for this one, the whole 2 days told so many stories with great endings

I think the WWE missed an opportunity in the Cody v Roman match. I think you would have had an all time pop if they hit the breaking glass and Stone Cold came out instead of the Undertaker, but Taker was probably a very close second best option.

My brother in law and I both watched wrestling in the 90s, but fell out of touch with it in the early 2000’s. Last year, as an excuse to hang out and catch up over a couple beers, we watched Night 1 of WrestleMania 39 together. We went in completely cold, having not followed it in years. HHH’s booking hooked us back in, and we followed it ever since and watched both nights of WrestleMania 40 together. What a payoff. I never thought I’d be a wrestling fan ever again, but here I am. Can’t wait to see whatever comes next unfold!

You're 100% right about the Uso fight, it needed.. SOMETHING. My friends and I watching were actually almost hopeful that there might be at least a reconciliation when Jimmy was down on his knees, and then when it turned out to be just another fake out, that was honestly kinda dull and disappointing.

This is now one of my top favorite wrestlemanias I've seen (along WM 39) after i got back to WWE since wrestlemania 27 (so bad made me quit!).
I had so much fun! My cousins came over for night 2 and they barely /know next to nothing of the current roster 😮
So even they had fun watching Triple Threat match and Roman vs Cody rematch!
It may be my favorite Main Event 😮 match, and rematch since my top 2 superstars did that in 2010 between Undertaker and Shawn Michaels 😢
The entrances, the 1 year hype, fight choreography, audience support, interferences.... but the surprises 😮😢😊 with John Cena and Undertaker 😇💜

I’ve lived through the IWC during the Ruthless Aggression era and I vividly remember fans trashing it because it wasn’t the Attitude Era, only to praise it when it was over.

After watching night 2,for a moment i forgot that there was night 1,thats how big difference was between both nights
the build for Sami v Gunther was not “poor”, the build for Chad v Gunther just made it look poor

Fully agree. Roman vs Cody was the greatest match I have ever seen. Every aspect from the buildup to the ring entrances to the performance was flawless. A massive thank you to the Rock whose contribution elevated this storyline incredibly. Moving forward, Cody should be the face champion while Drew is the heel champion. Anything else means WWE is losing money and squandering potential.
Santi, I just have to say thank you. I just started watching WWE shorting after Wrestlemanja 39 (thanks to my husband.) Once I found your channel I felt like I was able to enjoy it and understand it ever more. So thank you for that…also thank you for helping me be educated enough to call every match at Wrestlemanja XL correctly except one (Gunther vs. Sami)

That was the best Wrestlemania I've watched. And the main event of night 2 was the MAIN EVENT of all MAIN EVENT.
I was at WM 35 and 40 night 2 and WM 40 night 2 is easily one of the best shows of all time. WM 35 was a slog and the last one night slog.

I just want to say I'm glad I'm not the only wrestling fan. I remember as a kid watching wrestling was not cool. My classmates did not talk about it. I love the fact that I'm not alone.
I thought last year had a better undercard, with a better build than this year. But the main event for sure is the best.
The Draft is going to be interesting over the next month or two with the three top titles all on Raw.
Especially with Logan not being full time, there needs to be a fighting champion on Smackdown

I don't think that the main event was even close of a 5 star match, let alone only considering the first part with only the two guys.
But I need to agree that the ending was PITCH PERFECT in every aspect. And Taker appearance was the most genius move that I saw in a WM main event.
