After The Wall, you need to explore the Gilmour albums. Try "Mihalis", "There’s No Way Out Of Here" , "Raise My Rent", "No Way" and all the other songs too :) from the 1st solo LP 1978. I guarantee you’ll love it. And...... Bowie: The Man Who Sold The World ?
Wow can't wait for your review of the Wall really looking forward to that Andy. I first heard Animals in my local Record shop in Wallsend UK which is no longer there now and I loved it the first time I'm still working out if I get it even now.
AndyReacts you should listen to the Beatles from Please please me to Sgt Pepper. That's some growth. Floyd watched The Beatles record Sgt peppers when they made Piper.
Animals is my favorite PF work. Dark Side has some epic cuts but, if I’m gonna listen to an entire album, Animals does it for me. Glad you enjoyed it too...
I was 19 when this record was released. I loved it right away. Fortunately the lyrics were included (English is not my native tongue, I speak Flemish Dutch), and I didn't understand that much English at that time. In fact, I learned English by listening to so much beautiful songs from the best bands in the world whereof Pink Floyd belongs to my top three, next to Queen and Led Zeppelin. So, obviously, the music spoke more to me than the lyrics did in those days. I didn't even know that this concept album was inspired on the book Animal Farm (never heard of that book either), but to my understanding it was like people were categorized in three groups, whereof the pigs were in charge, and the dogs guarded the herds of sheeps for the pigs. A simplified kind of caricatural representation of a pyramidal power system. Never saw Pink Floyd live, but I did saw Roger Waters four or five times, and the first time was The Wall in Berlin.
Overwhelmed is how WE felt on every Floyd release, eagerly awaited by their millions of fans, back in the 70's. It was a wonderful time and music was not only brilliant,it was educational and informative as well. whats informative and educational about todays "music?" wheres todays message? We'll NEVER have an era like the 70's for music and social change ever again, not even close.
You can still find it today you just have to be open and search in the right places. There will always be this kind of music, there will never be another pink floyd i understand that, but music is constantly evolving and changing. There will always be music with a message because it is At the core of the concept of music. Expressing something.
I agree that 70s where are phenomenal some of the little bit of the 80s but can't touch it. So much great music so many great bands in the 70s were happening
You just got Animalized. Roger was always my favorite Floyder. I'm a sucker for deep lyrics. As the years went by I became more of a Sydite. Then a GilmourHead. Now I appreciate Rick and Nick more than I ever have. They are all equal in my eyes now. They lose a little bit every time one leaves or passes on. R.I.P. to Mr. Wright. Here's to the hope that your love of Floyd will only grow deeper as you age. I think you are pretty much a full blown Pink Floyd devotee now. It just gets better and better the more and more you listen. Don't be a Sheep. Or a Dog or a Pig. Be you. Peace
@Bryan Burton Well said man thanks for the thoughtful comment, I’ll make sure to continue being myself and letting the legendary bands from the past guide me with their wisdom, cheers friend!
My favourite song by PF. It has everything you could ask for. Amazing intro by Rick, the throbbing bass, the pounding drums, great vocals and lyrics by Roger, the organ, the synth and of course David's guitar work (especially the outro). Yeah, I like this song a lot! (oh and btw: the vocoder part is done by Nick)
I remember where I was ('87 or '88) when I first heard Sheep: I was borrowing my mom's car, and me and my brother popped in the Animals cassette. NJ Turnpike. Speakers were at full blast at 08:57. I was absolutely stunned by the masterpiece we had heard.
Hey Andy, Every time I listen to this I still get goosebumps. Like I told you before, 1987 was the first time hearing this on a trip to Austria and listened to it the entire trip for like 12 hours straight. Gilmour plays the Bass in this song and lead guitar and Waters rhythm guitar. The bass line is sooooo amazing in this song and I just loved the kind maniacal voice of Waters and fading away into the same note of the synthesizer. Richard Wright playing is just epic here. I really think Sheep is my favourite song of this album. Looking forward to you reacting on the Wall. Keep it up and don't forget Budgie man, awesome band who deserved more attention.
Hi Andy. Another great review. My understanding of the meaning behind the lyrics are, the song starts off emphasising the 'sheep' blindly doing as they are told and not relating to why they are doing this. They then get sold down the river and led to the slaughter ('Meek and obedient you follow the leader , down well trodden corridors into the valley of steel' then 'The look of terminal shock in your eyes'. The terminals being the electrodes used to execute them). The 'Lord is my shepherd' rework is the realisation section that they are gonna be killed and turned into 'lamb cutlets' so they learn to fight back and end up overthrowing the aggressors ('Have you heard the news? The dogs are dead). I always saw this song as a battle cry to encourage people not to conform and take other peoples crap, and to say what you have to say or do what you wanna do. Just my thoughts, but I'm sure others will have other views. That's one of the great things about PF... they can mean different things to different people.
I think you pretty much nailed it with that analysis. There are dogs and pigs but most of us are sheep. We are the many and if we ever got off of our asses and stopped watching reaction videos on RUclips.... wait a minute.... hmmm Anyway.... if we ever did "rise up" we could then "make the buggers eyes water." Until then we'll just keep "banging our hearts against some mad buggers wall." Peace From a bleeding heart and artist
@TheSnoop2222 Haha... I've finally been busted on where I got my handle from lol. Thought I'd rather go with this than Bobby Brown (in the know joke there) Yeah. It is a great album, but would have to go with Joe's Garage as my fave.
I just want to start by saying how nice it is to hear a young person starting out in life being so thoughtful about the music of Pink Floyd. I'm at the other end of life (well nearly!) so in context of the time when it first came out I have to hold my hand up and felt that this album was a bit of a letdown. You see I very wrongly was comparing it with the previous album Wish you were here and I guess that I felt that in comparison it was a step backwards. So it has taken a long time for me to realise how good this album is and how much I enjoy it. No, I did not immediately get all the messages from the first hearing. 'Three Pigs' I did get and you have to have lived in the U.K. to understand one of those three. There was a self-proclaimed prim and proper lady who was a middle England wife and mother. The bane of the B.B.C she would complain endlessly about the 'filth and muck' that they broadcasted. She started her own movement and thus became a prominent figure in our culture. It should not, therefore, have surprised anyone when she went for the jugular of films like the Exorcist, A Clockwork Orange and if my memory serves me right also the Life of Brian!. Lastly, in case it has not been noted, the name Pink Floyd came from two American artists called Pink Anderson and Floyd Council.
Animals, my favourite album..."Sheep"my favourite track (followed by "Dogs").. although with "Animals", I can't pick out one track to play like "Comfortably Numb". This album is like a book to me. I listen to the album from the first- to the last note. No pausing inbetween.
Harmlessly passing your time in the grassland away Only dimly aware of a certain unease in the air You better watch out There may be dogs about I've looked over Jordan, and I have seen Things are not what they seem What do you get for pretending the danger's not real Meek and obedient you follow the leader Down well trodden corridors into the valley of steel What a surprise The look of terminal shock in your eyes Now things are really what they seem No, this is no bad dream The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want He makes me down to lie Through pastures green He leadeth me the silent waters by With bright knives he releaseth my soul He maketh me to hang on hooks in high places He converteth me to lamb cutlets For lo, He hath great power, and great hunger When cometh the day we lowly ones Through quiet reflection, and great dedication Master the art of karate Lo, we shall rise up And then we'll make the bugger's eyes water Bleating and babbling we fell on his neck with a scream Wave upon wave of demented avengers March cheerfully out of obscurity into the dream Have you heard the news? The dogs are dead You better stay home And do as you're told Get out of the road if you want to grow old
My ears were stuffed with Floyd growing up because my friends were way into them - they never did it for me. But, I think this tune is their masterwork. The climax @8:58 gives me goosebumps.
I know you are moving on to the Wall so you may not want to backtrack/spin your wheels talking more about Animals.....but I'm curious how you feel about the tone shift toward overt aggression that permeated this album compared to the largely chill stuff they'd been doing up til then. Many have surmised that Animals was a response to the emerging punk movement in the UK and that, essentially, Roger was determined to prove the band's ability to (bad pun forthcoming) bare their teeth as much as anyone on the scene. For this reason, the album has long been the (ahem) black sheep of their discography, but it is my personal favorite of the classic era. Thankfully, along with The FInal Cut, Animals is seeing a renaissance of popularity with the new generation of young people discovering their work.
I never understood why it didn't seem to receive quite the same aclaim as maybe some of the other albums when it came out, but I personally think it's a stunning record. Powerful, dark in places, and a strong message and great musicianship. Definitely one of my favourite PF albums
You give a nice understanding of the albums concept, which I find quite heartening. You are right that the majority of any populace is content to conform and to comply, and to a degree, there is nothing wrong with that, but the real issue is not to conform or comply with everything. People should self-educate and self-inform, always sorting the wheat from the chaff, the facts from the lies, etc. In our contemporary times we all (globally) find ourselves in a very peculiar and chaotic place. Ideologies competing against each other, not only for attention, but to lead and impose, few ever seeking an equality in co-existence. The financial and corporate elite are trying to turn the world into a global corporate entity, and people into homogenised sheep without individuality or identity, they are trying to strip everything away to the point where we will no longer know who we are as individuals, as groups and communities, as tribes and as nations. Corporate tyranny is coming down at us all through the pipe of our future, and we are sheepishly allowing it. Music was once a great voice to warn us of such things, people could mass behind the music if they held a consensus with what it was telling us. Of course, nothing ever stands still, nothing ever remains the same...unless it forced. Corporatism is just as much as a tyranny as Stalinism ever was, it's just not fully unfolded yet, but when it does I fear for the kids of the future and what they will have to fight to release themselves from a mindset that their own individuality could never reconcile with. The problem has been education to some extent, because since the the late nineties onwards, kids have not been given a comprehensive education, they have simply been programmed to accept a particular point of view and perspective on the world, their developing individuality has been stifled and muted for political and corporate gain. No matter how many times you warn of the dangers, no matter how many times you warn the 'sheep' on how their passive behaviour actually imperils them, they will continue to simply graze the field without placing too much awareness on it all. In the past it was mostly slavery of the body, but today, it is slavery of the mind.
Well said.. except corporatism unlike tyranny can be halted rather quickly. Simply stop buying their elixir. Tyrannic regimes are much more difficult to remove once those creating the narrative manipulate the media with emotionalism, propaganda and lies in order to herd the sheep. Read about the Bolshevik revolution.. it's where we are currently headed. Baaaaaaaaaah
The great thing about Sheep, is the acknowledgement that once the sheep revolt, certain sheep become more dog or pig like & the whole status quo sets in again . " You better stay home if you want to grow old". Obvious reference to the disaster of communism. Water's lyrics are unsurpassed ,the bands cohesion is breathtaking & Dave coming & going as he pleases, well this type of music must never be forgotten, the same as the great classics. your'e doing a great job of keeping it out there for the next gen.
Paul watts This is a little late, but I would have to disagree with the assessment of anti-communism. Waters has stated that the album is loosely based off of Animal Farm, but he’s pretty anti-capitalist and so is the album. Dogs is about the businessmen who abuse the system of capitalism and the misery that some with it, Pigs is about democratic politicians who warp the system to perpetuate its suffering, and Sheep is about the system crushing the people at the bottom of the hierarchy and how they can be manipulated into blindly following along; in my opinion. Plus the references to UK politics and the context and time of release, and I don’t think your assessment of the album is quite correct, if you could elaborate a bit more maybe?
Got nothing to do with communism or anyone's idea of what it might (or might not be), opinion of which is often drenched in emotive rhetoric anyway. Communism isn't the history of the Soviet Union. Nor the miserable attempts at reactionary dictatorship throughout a sorry third world. It's an idea which never (to date) has got beyond the liars, the cynics nor the bought and paid opportunists. But, regardless; capitalism seems destined to perpetuate the collective misery and servitude anyway; and far more successfully through the illusion of shiny tropes and distracting noises. All hail the mighty dollar and those who clamber above the melee.
Can't believe it took me this long to find this reaction, absolutely loved it ! I bought this album when it came out I was 14 and I just turned 57 and this is still my all time favorite album hands down of all the music I've heard in my life nothing beats Pink Floyd Animals...♡
Porcupine Tree has a song called Time Flies- basically a love letter to Pink Floyd, especially this album. I also suggested what I consider their magnum opus (Anesthetize) a good while ago, please make my dreams come true and react to it. (PS if/when you get to react to it watch the Live in Tillburg version- it's a fantastic performance)
Here's that Porcupine Tree link. Lovely song. Lovely video. Especially if you already know Dogs. ruclips.net/video/JTEWlSTQ1RI/видео.html Keep an eye out for Steven Wilson. He might appear in concert somewhere near you one day. This kind of music isn't dead, just a bit "underground" these days, that's all. It's waiting to be reborn, maybe. And I'd second Mzed!'s recommendation to go with the live versions, generally, with Porcupine Tree. They were an incredible live band from what I've seen of them.
Yes Time Flies by PT is one of my favorite songs aswell, and I heard it only after having heard Floyd for so many years, and I immediately drew a connection.
Kill the dogs, here's to the sheep, long live the revolution! I think Dogs is probably the best song on the album. But this has a good, strong narrative drive. I have to say that I like that the song doesn't call on us to stop being sheep, or suggest it's better to be a dog than a sheep, but instead suggests that we, as sheep, rise up and kill the dogs (with karate, apparently). There's more to sheep than meets the eye!
@@andyandalex Problem is that from those sheeps, new dogs will rise. It's pretty endless. Utopia IS utopia. "The dogs are dead You better stay home And do as you're told Get out of the road if you want to grow old"
Fantastic reaction you have to this underrated classic record Andy. And yes I went to my local Record shop in Newcastle upon Tyne and bought it you can't beat the sound of a record or vinyl if you prefer. I love how sheep is arranged and I think it's rounded off well with Pigs on the wing ( part 2) Mike UK.
Great review Andy! I’m going back and watching your PF reaction videos. I got turned onto PF early in college (about 30 years ago) and I’ve been hooked ever since.
George Orwell's book "Animal Farm" was the inspiration for this album. The album is much darker than I think you are recognizing. The titles "dogs", "pigs", and "sheep" refer to personality types, not just social groups. There is no choice in picking and choosing which personality type one is. A sheep will always be a sheep, by their very nature. A dog will always be a dog, and a pig is always a pig. Change is possible, but only through a violent upheaval of the social order which reveals who among the sheep were dogs and pigs all along but were merely hiding or repressed by the previous status quo.
I saw Roger perform this in Hartford in 2009, I was surprised and enthralled. It was the Dark Side of the Moon tour and contained all kinds of good stuff. They even let the pig fly, it ended up 10 miles away. The backdrop was a radio with a bottle of whiskey and a glass. Then an arm came out and changed the channel to open up Wish You Were Here the song. Wonderful.
so, Animals completed. great reactions. i do love your facial expressions; they're very much like mine. i only noticed how i react when my dog reacted to me like i was behaving weird. something i heard about this album is that PF made it in order to get out of a recording contract with a company who were screwing them over. i think it was meant to be a flop, but since i never used to be much of a fan of Animals, i don't know the details [i think i told you this already] anyway, fortunately for all of us PF were incapable of making a bad album. i look forward to the Wall. i haven't really listened to it much for a while
There is a high density of matter, a high hardness of matter, there is a high voltage in electrical wires..., in "Animals" a high density of music and words.
I first heard this album back in 1977. I used to order most of my albums thru one of the old record clubs ( 12 albums for a penny, etc. )....and they often didn't include any liner notes. So there were no lyrics to follow along with. I was just digging the sound, with no understanding of what any of it was actually about. Over 4 decades later.....'Animals' is probably my favorite Pink Floyd album. Or at least the one I find myself returning to most often. By now, I've seen them 'live' 5 times, seen David Gilmour 1 time ( his 'About Face' tour in the early 1980s ).....along with I don't know how many tribute bands . I've got all of their earliest singles, albums, videos.....and even an original production animation cel from 'The Wall' ( framed & hanging on my own ). If you get a chance......check out 'The Last Refugee' video......off of the album that Roger Waters released a couple of years ago ( 'Is This The Life We Really Want' ) Here's the link: ruclips.net/video/_XdLNqWYgGI/видео.html
Hi new to your channel and I see immediately how passionate you are and that made me subscribe to this channel. And this album is among my three favorites of Pink Floyd, the Dark side of the moon album, the Wish you were here album and this one Animals. For some reason The Wall hasnt had the same influence on me as those three mentioned. Whatever, that´s just me. But Animals will always be a superb rock album to listen to and will blow you away at anytime. Incredible well made
You may recall during the your "Meddle" critique, I said "Meddle" was one of my two favorite Pink Floyd albums. Well, this is the other one. I love the way you are taken into the and back out of the journey with two short simple but very effective parts of an acoustic song. I think the three long pieces are beautifully rich and intricate while still being accessible. An especially great feat when treading into such dark territory. Although I still really enjoy the albums that fallow, it's a bit unfortunate that this is the last time Pink Floyd would construct these long suite-like compositions with those wonderful involved instrumental sections. To me, this is when Pink Floyd really shines. Although there were some straight out instrumentals on the David Gilmore-led albums and a good helping of terrific solos, it was assembled very differently (at least to me). That said, don't worry. There's still a good deal of essential stuff to come.
@thegalaxybeing Well said friend thanks for sharing and thanks for coming along with me on this journey, you’ve been here close to the beginning! I appreciate it! And I’m excited to explore the later ones more and even the solo albums too potentially, cheers! 😁
Love your thought out, sincere and comprehensive reviews. You do great work stating your opinion with style. Thank you very much. Veteran of 800+ concerts since 1974. I've been blessed and lucky enough to see seemingly every band from ABBA to Zappa and every band/genre in between. Name a band or solo artist and there is a great chance I've seen them live. Saw Pink Floyd during their "Momentary Lapse of Reason" tour and also the never to be forgotten, "In the Flesh" (Animals) tour. The latter being the 1 show I compare ALL my concerts too. Nothing as of June 2019, has come close to that magical night 42 years ago. June 1977, South Phillys Spectrum, Perfection in a concert is an understatement. From the professionalism and musicianship of the 4 members, to the 6 back up musicians and singers. To the amazing, perfectly clear sounding and waaay ahead of its time, quadraphonic sound system, to the perfectly in synch laser and light show.To the inflable Pig, amazing visuals shown on the screen,to the 10 person team in the sound/lighting/concert control board area.To this day, I still get goosebumbs thinking back at that night.
One point about "Sheep" that everyone misses... at least I've never seen it acknowledged Anywhere... is that the Sheep, in rising up, become the new Dogs. "Have you heard the news?! The Dogs are dead! You better stay home and do as your told! Get out of the road if you want to grow old." That is the Sheep-become-Dogs speaking. An acknowledgement that "power corrupts" and new powereeventually becomes old power, ala The Who - 'We Wont Get Fooled Again' - "There's nothing in the street looks any different to me, and the slogans are replaced, by-the-bye. And the parting on the left is now the parting on the right..."
In case you didn't know, those who bought the 8-track version of Animals back in the 70s got a little bonus. The album would play continuously until you took the tape out. So a guy named Snowy White played a short guitar solo to link the two Pigs On The Wings.
Great reaction as usual. Once again, thanks Andy. Animals really is a great album. Glad you did it all in one sitting, that's definitely the way to hear it.
By the way.... on the 8-track tape that I bought in '76... the entire Pigs Pt.1 and Pigs Pt.2 are combined in a guitar solo that guitarist Snowy White played the solo. Of course now you can find that anywhere... but that blew me away when I was 17 ! Back then, only on 8-track.
durban73 37nabrud - I was referring to the Floyd's musical ability and awesomeness as Wagner was/is considered in those terms as well. Politics doesn't enter into it. It's well worth watching Stephen Fry's documentary on Wagner (here on RUclips) when he (Fry) himself has a conflict between whether he should be appreciating Wagner's music at all considering the anti-Semitic stance that Wagner had and that Fry is Jewish himself. The only member of the Floyd that has taken an interest in politics in recent years is Roger Waters and I think that he's got to a stage in his life where he doesn't really care what people think. Even if you disagree with Waters political views and Wagner's political views, one can still very much appreciate and marvel at the epicness of the music of both.
For you or anyone else that hasn't heard of this have you heard about how the inflatable pig lost its moorings, the ropes came loose on it and it flew up into the sky when they were doing the photo shoots for the album cover. It flew up and pilots were having to call air trafffic control afer they saw this pig floating in the sky ahead of them asking what the f they were meant to do about it. It ended up lying in a farmers field on the other side of the English Channel in Belgium other Floyd tracks Id recommend are Grantchester Meadows, Fat Old Sun, Paintbox, Point Me At The Sky and Apples And Oranges I particularly love Grantchester Meadows which is almost as good as Echoes for how relaxing it is and Fat Old Sun is a really relaxing track too.
I was seventeen when I was introduced to Floyd (Wish U were here) became hooked. In my late twenties was when I came across the Animals album....and fell in love. This album is so very special and I listen to it every year, year after year and I am in my sixties now. Andy, let me tell you something. Now that you are "one of us" Pink Floyd Freaks, you will keep listening till the day you die and you will never tire of them....ever!
This and Dogs are my two favourite Pink Floyd songs, I mean the last two minutes of Sheep says it all, btw this is Crazy Animation Artist I just changed my name.
Just to reiterate what I said on the Pigs video, the songs are based off of the 'classes' in George Orwell's Animal Farm. I think Floyd were trying to paint that concept to show us all angles of the world and how it all ties together to what we see, most people usually fall into one of those categories, we are all sheep! Literally just by the music of Pigs you can feel what it might feel like to be a person in power, and in Sheep you can feel the eeriness that us regular folk feel about the world and about how we seem to get screwed over all the time.
This Was Me At 17 Years Young In My Bed Room Smoking Pot And Head Phones On And My Black Light On Black Light Posters Glowing What A Way To Jam To This Album At 17 Years Young Then Going To See Them In Concert At The Philadelphia Spectrum " In The Flesh Tour " In 1977 It Was Great Growing Up In The 1970's With Music Like This 2 / 11 / 21
I saw them the same year at Soldier field in Chicago. What I remember most was when they took a break everybody sat there in shock until someone said " Oh wow" which seemed snap everyone out of there trance.
Sheep Prayer: The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want He makes me down to lie Through pastures green he leadeth me the silent waters by With bright knives he releaseth my soul He maketh me to hang on hooks in high places He converteth me to lamb cutlets For lo,m he hath great power and great hunger When cometh the day we lowly ones Through quiet reflection and great dedication Master the art of karate Lo, we shall rise up And then we'll make the bugger's eyes water.
Although most online lyrics say "karate", it's clear that in the recorded version, which is listened to in this video, he says "judo"; just a small correction.
Good analysis Andy on POW. Empathy. Goes all the way back to ‘glances in the street’ & ‘I am you and what I see is me’ from Echoes. Little factoid re Gilmour’s guitar riff at the end of Sheep. He liked that sequence of chords so much he used them again immediately on his solo album released the next year in the song Short and Sweet, and then again on Run Like Hell in 79. He just changed the progression in each a bit. And in the middle of Sheep, because Roger hadn’t yet the opportunity to cast his ire at organized religion, he inserts a bastardized version of the Lord’s Prayer, because more than any other controlling force, Sheep are addicted to religion. At the end of the prayer, and for the remainder of the song, Roger predicts that Sheep will awaken to trounce their oppressors. We’re still waiting, unfortunately. The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want He makes me down to lie Through pastures green He leadeth me the silent waters by With bright knives he releaseth my soul He maketh me to hang on hooks in high places He converteth me to lamb cutlets For lo, He hath great power, and great hunger When cometh the day we lowly ones Through quiet reflection, and great dedication Master the art of karate Lo, we shall rise up And then we'll make the bugger's eyes water
Animals is my favourite Pink Floyd album, and Sheep is my favourite song from it. Although the whole thing is perfect and needs to be listened to in one go imo! Great reaction 👍
As usual another great reaction video. It is so hard to favourite Pink Floyd albums but if I had to choose then I think that this one might even beat The Wall for me. I think it has some of the most savage guitar playing by Dave Gilmour on any of their albums. He doesn't just do emotive work. He put out his first solo album in 1978 and it has a track on it called Short & Sweet. It was written with the singer of Have a Cigar; Roy Harper. I really think you guys should give it a listen. Keep on rocking 'cos this is another old guy enjoying you two discovering and enjoying this music.
The unmatched BRILLIANCE of PINK FLOYD... Nobody comes close, It's not even FAIR to other bands! I remember waiting in line for the record store to open on the day of it's release in 1977- got it on vynyl and on cassette tape. Used to listen on my walkman cassete player during wood shop in junior high... Still as incredible, fresh, and RELEVANT some 42 years later! Also, got to see them Live on this albums tour, yeah, LUCKY ME!!!!
Once you're all done listening to Pink Floyd's officially released output, I really hope you'll get into the bootlegs, or as Pink Floyd fans call them, RoIO's. (Records of illegitimate origin.) There are hundreds of well recorded audience, and even soundboard, recordings from their concerts. My personal favourites are the 1977 concerts where they played Animals and Wish You Were Here in their entirety. Finding quality RoIO's is a great hobby. It's like a treasure hunt!
This whole album......for me will go down in gistory as the MUST HAVE at all times in my collection. Ut has accompanied me on many many drunk days & nights & many good times & not so good times. First heard it back in 1980. My reaction was ……. pretty much like yours. Kinda glued to it, kinda confused, almost bored at times but Not quite because they knew how to take their time telling a story and Build on it so it was quite a rollercoaster hearing it my first time.
"Pigs on the wing" derives from fighter pilots under attack from enemy aircraft; in this context it's any undesirable, perhaps hidden, set of circumstances (or people) that threaten one's identity and life. From what I've read, Waters' new wife at the time, Carolyne Christie, was his own "shelter from pigs on the wing" (she gave birth to Waters' first child during the recording sessions of "Animals" in late 1976).
AMazing....the stuff we grew up with.......you are one of the very few on line.... going thru ALL of Floyd from start to finish.....and you are doing it right. This is stuff i was listening to in my teens.....and every day since then..........its great to hear new generations.....listening ....like new generations hearing Beethoven ...YOUR insights.... are intelligent and thought out.........The Bealtes and Pink Floyd are #1 and #2 .....in super group brilliance and culture.........Dylan, comes after that.......The Anti war stuff....also.....The best Ive heard since that time...to create thought and culture....was Green Day.........great great stuff.
You have to listen to Pigs on the Wing Part 2 with the Snowy White guitar solo. It was a rare recording I think only released on a special edition or something (dont quote me on that). Solo is nice though.
I know you let this continue into Pigs on the Wing pt 2, but on the 8-track, there is a full version, instead of part 1 and 2, with an instrumental section connecting the 2 parts. If you search RUclips you can find it.
The song lengths made sure that this album would never be as popular, as far as radio airplay, as Dark Side, wish you were here, and The Wall. But it's as good, or in my opinion, better, than those. It's reserved for people who are willing to dig for it, willing to go off the beaten path and immerse themselves in a truly magnificent sonic experience.
i watched this the day after the storming of the u.s. capitol by trump supporters. this song fits them to a tea! "meek and obedient you follow the leader down well trodden corridors into the valley of steel" . waters must have had a crystal ball!
Pigs on the Wing is a love song to Roger's wife. The first is about how their life would be if they hadn't met each other and the second one is, like, saying how good it is that they have each other. It's sweet.
From a musicianship point of view Animals is definitely Pink Floyd’s best album of all. 8.59 onwards it’s like, “okay so David Gilmore has decided that this is in fact the exact point at which he’s now going to show the world he is a master of his craft and a total, complete and utter genius”
Another great album. Hope you got the vinyl. No better way to listen to it, while immersing yourself in the gatefold sleeve. What ever happened to The Wall? Love the Skylark. Echoes of Grantchester Meadows. You should still do the occasional solo review. You give a very honest and emotional view of the effect the music has on you. Which is probably the most important thing. Only Wish You Were Here left to watch now. Then i will have seen all your videos apart from the deleted ones and the ones on the patreon.
Yeahh boi Sheep i live next to sheep irl but their not as loud and progressive as the sheep on here Good song reaction mate cant wait for final thoughts
@MANHATTENMAN ! Yeah man it was great, I don’t think I’m gonna do final thoughts vids anymore, I’ll just throw in my thoughts when I hit the last track, cheers man! 😁
The ending of the album was absolutely amazing! Such an underrated record! Hope you guys had a great weekend! Cheers! 😁
Final cut's even more underrated! Lots of people seem to not like it, but it’s one of my favorites.
AndyReacts you should listen to the Beatles from Please please me to Sgt Pepper. That's some growth.
Floyd watched The Beatles record Sgt peppers when they made Piper.
@@JH-tj1qs Love The Final Cut.
IMO, the lyrics to "Sheep" are some of Water's best work.
Yep, I feel like the song is through the perspective of a sheep that knows what’s happening and is trying to tell people.
The keyboard intro is some of Richard Wrights most tastiest work - RIP
Animals is my favorite PF work. Dark Side has some epic cuts but, if I’m gonna listen to an entire album, Animals does it for me. Glad you enjoyed it too...
Love how Roger Waters voice transitions seamlessly into Rick Wright's synthesizer tone early on in the song...
Yes! It is awesome and eerie engineering magick
Its almost like a metaphor for how we (the sheep) are converted into nothing more than robots (the synth) to work for the upper classes.
Love the part when he laughs after it 🔥🔥
A nation of sheep will soon have a government of wolves - Edward R. Murrow
Edward R. Murrow..... a genius.
And the sheep who rise up and overthow the dogs become the new dogs - Roger Waters
It was a wonderful time and music was not only brilliant,it was educational and informative as well.
whats informative and educational about todays "music?"
wheres todays message?
We'll NEVER have an era like the 70's for music and social change ever again, not even close.
You can still find it today you just have to be open and search in the right places. There will always be this kind of music, there will never be another pink floyd i understand that, but music is constantly evolving and changing. There will always be music with a message because it is At the core of the concept of music. Expressing something.
I agree that 70s where are phenomenal some of the little bit of the 80s but can't touch it. So much great music so many great bands in the 70s were happening
It is done, the purification ritual has been completed
lol, exactly
Be you.
Peace
@Bryan Burton
Well said man thanks for the thoughtful comment, I’ll make sure to continue being myself and letting the legendary bands from the past guide me with their wisdom, cheers friend!
Bryan Burton that was a fantastic comment sir.
That is one hell of an awesome song by Pink Floyd!! It blows me away, everytime I hear it!!
Can we all just take a moment to appreciate Nick Mason? He's absolutely immense on this track.
Such a great drum sound when he comes in
Definitely 👍🏼
Dark Side of The Moon obviously one of the best albums of all time but Animals is up there also. Brilliant!
Agreed!
Not well known, is that David Gilmour played the base on Sheep and on Pigs.
Waters played rhythm guitar on Sheep.
Hi Andy. Another great review. My understanding of the meaning behind the lyrics are, the song starts off emphasising the 'sheep' blindly doing as they are told and not relating to why they are doing this. They then get sold down the river and led to the slaughter ('Meek and obedient you follow the leader
, down well trodden corridors into the valley of steel' then 'The look of terminal shock in your eyes'.
We are the many and if we ever got off of our asses and stopped watching reaction videos on RUclips.... wait a minute.... hmmm
Anyway.... if we ever did "rise up" we could then "make the buggers eyes water." Until then we'll just keep "banging our hearts against some mad buggers wall."
Peace
From a bleeding heart and artist
Sheep only have power if they band together and revolt. Then THEY become the pigs and dogs.
Just like "The Wall", the album "Animals" is cyclical.
Nailed it, mate.
@@bryanburton6087 As is Dark Side of the Moon
Harmlessly passing your time in the grassland away
Only dimly aware of a certain unease in the air
You better watch out
There may be dogs about
I've looked over Jordan, and I have seen
Things are not what they seem
What do you get for pretending the danger's not real
Meek and obedient you follow the leader
Down well trodden corridors into the valley of steel
What a surprise
The look of terminal shock in your eyes
Now things are really what they seem
No, this is no bad dream
The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want
He makes me down to lie
Through pastures green He leadeth me the silent waters by
With bright knives he releaseth my soul
He maketh me to hang on hooks in high places
He converteth me to lamb cutlets
For lo, He hath great power, and great hunger
When cometh the day we lowly ones
Through quiet reflection, and great dedication
Master the art of karate
Lo, we shall rise up
And then we'll make the bugger's eyes water
Bleating and babbling we fell on his neck with a scream
Wave upon wave of demented avengers
March cheerfully out of obscurity into the dream
Have you heard the news?
The dogs are dead
You better stay home
And do as you're told
Get out of the road if you want to grow old

Another masterpiece down. Great job. I have always thought that "Pigs on the Wing" = the saying "When pigs can fly" , like "when hell freezes over.
Really enjoyed your analysis. Great Album! Keep em coming!
Floyd's social message has seeped into your brain, welcome aboard young man,and spread the word.
@Elysiumfire
Well said!!! 😁😁
Well said.. except corporatism unlike tyranny can be halted rather quickly.
Paul watts I feel like the song is from the perspective of a sheep who knows what is going on and is trying to tell them.
Plus the references to UK politics and the context and time of release, and I don’t think your assessment of the album is quite correct, if you could elaborate a bit more maybe?
big boy Agreed!

I would more often choose Dogs for that, and if I'm not asleep yet, I'd continue with Pigs + Sheep :D
I drove past whats left of Battersea Power Station on Tuesday......I love this song bro
They’ve put a roof back on and rebuilt the chimneys.
I copy that! Porcupine Tree (Steven Wilson) is AWESOME!
Here's that Porcupine Tree link. Lovely song. Lovely video. Especially if you already know Dogs. ruclips.net/video/JTEWlSTQ1RI/видео.html
Keep an eye out for Steven Wilson.

The Wall is number 5 on my list of favorite PF albums but it's still good!

Great reaction I’ve enjoyed your journey.Going through the Floyd albums in order is like listening to an unique learning curve
Remember when they started to print the lyrics on the inside of the albums the good old days
@thegalaxybeing
Well said friend thanks for sharing and thanks for coming along with me on this journey, you’ve been here close to the beginning!
An acknowledgement that "power corrupts" and new powereeventually becomes old power, ala The Who - 'We Wont Get Fooled Again' - "There's nothing in the street
looks any different to me, and the slogans are replaced, by-the-bye.
And the parting on the left
is now the parting on the right..."
In case you didn't know, those who bought the 8-track version of Animals back in the 70s got a little bonus. The album would play continuously until you took the tape out. So a guy named Snowy White played a short guitar solo to link the two Pigs On The Wings.
Had u in that sleepy trance like sheep punctuated by moments of terror, always a journey. So glad u appreciate what many feel is their best work
Great reaction as usual.
Pigs on the wing part 2 Waters is singing about his contentment in life with his then partner who had given him renewed comfort and meaning.
Pink Floyd - the Wagner of the rock world!
showmoke I don't think they hate Jews.
durban73 37nabrud - I was referring to the Floyd's musical ability and awesomeness as Wagner was/is considered in those terms as well.

And then we'll make the bugger's eyes water.
Just a BIT different from actual "Lord's Prayer" !!!... but hey.
Times change. :-)
Although most online lyrics say "karate", it's clear that in the recorded version, which is listened to in this video, he says "judo"; just a small correction.
Some Floyd's songs like "Sheep" make you turn corners inside your mind and gaze at mental landscapes you didn't even know were there.
The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want
He makes me down to lie
Through pastures green He leadeth me the silent waters by
With bright knives he releaseth my soul
He maketh me to hang on hooks in high places
He converteth me to lamb cutlets
For lo, He hath great power, and great hunger
When cometh the day we lowly ones
Through quiet reflection, and great dedication
Master the art of karate
Lo, we shall rise up
And then we'll make the bugger's eyes water
Animals is my favourite Pink Floyd album, and Sheep is my favourite song from it. Although the whole thing is perfect and needs to be listened to in one go imo! Great reaction 👍
Pink Floyd, national treasures here in England.
Rock Royalty.
I listened to this so much when it first came out I can sing all of the sheep parts by heart.
m a a a a h...
The unmatched BRILLIANCE of
PINK FLOYD...
You have to react to Echoes, live at Pompeii...by Floyd, of course.
This album is just beyond !!! --- I remember listening to this back in the 1980's. ---It's insane !!!
Pink Floyd is one of those bands that will never get old, 1000 years from now that will sound as fresh as ever, it's timeless.................
I could listen to that keyboard in the beginning all day long
The outro to Sheep is possibly my favorite segment of any Pink Floyd song
I,m beginning to look onSheep by Pink Floyd as Rick’s masterpiece. Dig that intro...closely becoming one of my favourites of all time. RIP Rick Wright
Just heard the 8 track version. Has a guitar section I had never heard before. I was very pleasantly surprised.
Animals through surround with the floor and walls shaking......the best!
When pigs fly, and they did!
Well analyzed...
i watched this the day after the storming of the u.s. capitol by trump supporters. this song fits them to a tea!
It's sweet.
8:30 your looks says, fuck, these are the best lyrics iv ever heard and i cant believe how fuckin good this music is.
Best Floyd album in my humble opinion. It came out my sophomore year in college.
You may not understand it, but you MOST certainly get it. I prescribe multiple listens...
truly the best album ever,
From a musicianship point of view Animals is definitely Pink Floyd’s best album of all. 8.59 onwards it’s like, “okay so David Gilmore has decided that this is in fact the exact point at which he’s now going to show the world he is a master of his craft and a total, complete and utter genius”
5.25- the beginning of pure ecstasy
Another great album. Hope you got the vinyl. No better way to listen to it, while immersing yourself in the gatefold sleeve.
What ever happened to The Wall?
Love the Skylark. Echoes of Grantchester Meadows.
You should still do the occasional solo review. You give a very honest and emotional view of the effect the music has on you. Which is probably the most important thing.
Only Wish You Were Here left to watch now. Then i will have seen all your videos apart from the deleted ones and the ones on the patreon.
Ha ha Andy you look so young and naive on this . I first heard Aninals in 1985 when I used to iron my school uniform with the vinyl playing at 7.30 am
Yeahh boi Sheep i live next to sheep irl but their not as loud and progressive as the sheep on here Good song reaction mate cant wait for final thoughts
@MANHATTENMAN !
Yeah man it was great, I don’t think I’m gonna do final thoughts vids anymore, I’ll just throw in my thoughts when I hit the last track, cheers man! 😁
meek and obedient we follow the leader down well trodden corridors into the valley of steel....... poetic lyrical magic
This guy is me every time I listen to pink Floyd
This song is perfect
