FLCL was the first anime to make me realize just how much a soundtrack matters. The OST in this series easily rocketed FLCL into my favorites of all time.
***** To be completely honest, I almost think that the music in FLCL was more essential to the overall work than it was in Cowboy Bebop. Not that Bebop's wasn't impactful, but FLCL just took it to an absolute other level.
The OST of FLCL vs. Bebop is quite a difficult decision for me, as both are so amazing. The bebop OST was amazing, and it was COMPLETELY necessary for the show and it's atmosphere. Every single thing that happened in Bebop was carried with the music, and it worked in perfect harmony, making it one of my favorite OST's. But, the OST of FLCL is my personal preference. There is simply put, no other music that sparks this much emotion and feeling from me. The FLCL OST inspires a sense of melancholy and nostalgia to an unbelievable degree. Even without seeing the show, you can understand and connect to the emotions the music is conveying. Both are great, but I personally lean more towards FLCL.
Logan Ace Bebops soundtrack is also MASSIVE. Several themes written for characters, hell, 4 of the songs could have been playing during (hem) the end with equally powerful results. Don't get me wrong, I love Bebop to death, but where FLCL's "japanese shoegaze rock" is what gives it that morose, "slice of life" feel, Bebop's moments of silence are more vital than Yoko's music
When you're in a town like this all covered with smoke, you forget that there's a world outside. Nothing amazing happens here. And you get used to that, used to a world where everything is ordinary. Every day we spend here is like a whole lifetime of dying slowly.
Like a panda with a mean face, or like sandals with pressure points drawn on them, or the smell of a blackboard eraser, or a Sunday morning where you wake up and it's raining. Well, I like him more than hard bread.
povkilla same. Had an existential crisis two years ago. Lost my mind and wrote never knows best on a whole pack. I'd put this song on and smoke, everything else just melted away.

honestly FLCL was an amazing show, my favorite single season anime ever, but it was the pillows work used on the show that put it over the top for me. it was just perfect for the mood of every scene, almost as if they made they show to FIT the music. the greatness of season 1 is so unimaginable that i'm worried about how int he world they could possibly live up to it with the reboot, but my biggest concern is actually with the soundtrack. the pillows were absolutely instrumental (no pun intended) to the forming of the aesthetic of the show and i honestly can't see how anyone could fill that role for the upcoming seasons.i dont think even they could repeat the work they did on the first season.
+Nobody Lurker I feel like the only way to create a successful new edition to FLCL would be to make it with completely different characters and somewhat different stylization but still try and hit the same or similar feelings and themes as the original. Like maybe it's not about growing up as a preteen and becoming a teenager but rather it's about growing up and passing from teenager into a 20 year old. And maybe it could have a similar feeling soundtrack but by a different band like the pixies or something would be cool.
A "cash grab"...? Are you serious? FLCL is not even popular enough to call that a cash grab. If we were talking about an other Naruto anime I would agree but FLCL is not mainstream. If they are doing something new, that's certainly because they have something new to tell.

Ok so I’m a lover of sentimentalism and poetry and all of you guys’s metaphors and descriptions of how this song makes you feel are beautiful. I love reading how we all feel the same thing in different ways ❤️✌️
+Zero Cool apparently the director of the anime saw it written on a cigarette once and thought it looked cool. So in the end it doesn't really mean anything. However the director said he thought it might refer to how "no one knows best" when it comes to how to live life, referring to Mamimis uncertainty about life and the future in general. For what it's worth, I always thought it refereed to the old phrase "mother knows best" and was about Mamimis home life--possibly some drama with her parents, or parent if she's an only child.
This song feels like a distillation of my soul. Completely free of trying to seem cool or deep; Just pure, innocent, absolute resonance with who I am deep down. I’ve had this thought for nearly a decade and every time I come back to this video, I think the same thing. Any quiet moment of my life, when I’m done working, talking, playing games etc and I’m just alone with my thoughts, this song is the essence of those moments, those moments when I’m alone, when I am truly myself. This is the one song out of every track in existence that could perfectly serve as the background music to everything that makes up my life. I’m in love with it.
I am doing that right now but it's almost midnight where I am in Chicago. Sitting alone in front of my apartment playing this song on Repeat on my phone smoking a cigarette. I have been doing that on and off for the last ten years.
Smoking a tightly rolled blunt. Just got off a long shift that was pretty much standard retail saturday hell. Thinking about the conversation I had with my manager a dude I genuinely look up to. Listening to this on MAX MAX volume. Sip of ginger ale and now this is a memory I'm going to hold for the rest of my life. Nothing beats think about all these different people with vastly different lives than mine all listening to this song and feeling generally the same emotions but for uniquely personal reasons.
This song always reminds me of my first kiss. My high school ended early cause of covid, and I went out on a date with this girl who I was crushing on for a while. Ironically, she was the one who confessed to me, but we went to a bowling alley for our first date. We were both pretty shy, but it was still fun. When we were ready to leave, we were just standing at the parking lot at night. Then after an awkward silence, she grabbed my face, and kissed me. After the kiss, I was speechless for about a minute. While I was stumbling on my words, processing what just happened, I made plans for another date. We never did that second date, and we drifted apart later on because of lockdown restrictions. But every time I hear this song I think about that moment. And even if we didn't have a true relationship, I will never forget that kiss.
This song makes me so full of nostalgic butterflies, while also piercing my heart with some deep sadness that I can't seem to find the root of. All in all it makes me want to sit and think about my life and feel I can turn around on this free fall into the depths. God I can't believe I missed the pillows one super rare tour of the US...that actually came to my city... One of my worst regrets...
Even though you're gone now, just know that we're still with you. Long live at0msk, the pirate king! Please help me pass this on through the pillows and FLCL community!!

Naota: Huh? Mamimi: Or like a panda with a mean face, or like sandals with pressure points drawn on them, or the smell of a blackboard eraser, or a Sunday morning where you wake up and it's raining. This song always reminds me of the final scene when we see the string on Haruko's bass being played. I think it's just because this song is kind of sad and that ending just sort of leaves this emptiness inside, but it's like a happy emptiness or something.
That is what makes FLCL amazing and truly artful. It leaves this feeling of nostalgia and melancholy forever afterwords, and anything that can touch those emotions and effect you literal years after the runtime of the show, is truly masterful.
I'm literally smoking in my balcony at 3:40 AM staring at nowhere and overthinking how alone I am and how my life sucks while listening this at the same time.

If you look up the symbolism in the show, maybe you'll understand it better (because everything is symbolism. Everything that doesn't make sense on the surface means something deeper). But it's essentially a coming of age/dealing with puberty story, as I'm sure you already know.
I spent several years away from this anime, then watch it again. The feels were very real when I heard last dinosaur, that was always my favorite. And Ride on shooting star, to experience that over again was amazing.

Every single time. I came back here, just to cry about my life. The pillows it's not just music, it's my way of escaping of my hard life. Of my failure and difficulties. And of my lack of love.
FLCL kinda helped me during my young adolescence and had a pretty big impact on my development during that time. I remember humid summer nights walking a girl I really liked home after spending all day at the pool. Having to walk my bike with me because I rode it to the pool, the soft sorta awkward conversation. The space street lights, the cool air, and the innocence of it all. Something i look back on with fondness
I think of the birds, the trees, then people. It's like one of those thought you kept alone. Then suddenly it's rebar, a concert ground, so sound. All I can think is machine own this town. Everything from circle to square, then I ask my self where do I fit in? This town. A gloom shades sits down, I have a drink, it's stiff and I hear a call. Brand new love song.
As a kid, this show made zero sense to me when i first saw it, but it definitley made me feel something ive never experienced before or since. As an adult i can gratefully say i still dont understand a damn thing about it, but man is it just as good now, almost 20 years later. Life goes by so fast.
Amazing song, really nice to just lay back and think about stuff; I can't help but think of happy things when I hear this. You look back on life and say "wow, look at how far I've come." ya know? The last part always hits me, just incredible.
I completely understand that feeling... I myself have been brought to tears (both happy and sad) and thought very deeply about my future and dreams while listening to this song. It's the first song that ever made me feel that way, and I will never forget the peaceful way it flows through your heart.
Nostalgia in perfection, too glad I bought the blu ray collection. This is the kind of song you can listen to and realize life's going to continue on, its all perspective.
I just found out about FLCL like 4 weeks ago I was confused, then sad when I found out it was only 6 ep. as a fan of anime this has to be my fav anime. soundtrack, story, characters and all its the best
FoolyCooly takes me back to a much simpler time. I love that music can do this to us 🥲 so many early memories of first love and first love lost. The song of a millenia.
its awesome.. its just haning around music.. sitting or lying into some endless fields.. watching into the sky.. try to reach the stars .. o.O have to wish my tears away..
Beautiful song. The guitar at the last half reminds me of cicadas humming and orange street lights on a hot summer night. Nothing to lose, everything to gain, not wanting any of it, but longing for all of it. I look back and wonder if what I have now Is what younger version of me wanted. Oh well, never knows best.
I remember when I just started my quest for anime. I'd just finished marathoning and catching up on One Piece (from 0 to 521 in about a month) and thought, man there's way better anime out there. the first anime I watched was this. The soundtrack was fucking awesome and man prepare me for what kind of randomness and general fun/emotions this amazing young medium has to offer. Long live the pillows and long live anime for bringing these great stories to life. long live the little busters :) have a beautiful morning with crazy sunshine rays. and good night to those sleepy heads.
Oh boy are you wrong xD but they are both fun to watch and deliver very different tastes ya know? KLK is very over the top almost all the time from absurd scaling to just the many fight scenes this series has to offer, I highly recommend this show if you can get past the some what symbolistic fan service (yes, fan service has some meaning in the show)
quite so, but still both are enjoyable anime; right? I mean one is this multi-art styled comedy with a deep moraled story and one is an over the top fan-serviced action fest from the guys of Gurren Lagaan.
I don't know why this song always reminds me of when my high school sweetheart visited my home town years ago. We spent the night reminiscing. I guess it has a nostalgic effect to it?
This song has been with me through thick and thin. Love and loss. A ghost is what this song is. A sad, beautiful, indescribable song which traverses space and time.
Naota: How much do you like my brother? Mamimi: It's hard. Watermelon. Or like a panda with a mean face... Or a scandal with pressure points drawn on them... Or the smell of a blackboard eraser... Or a sunday morning where you wake up and it's been raining... Well, I like him more than stale bread crusts.
I write Never Knows Best on one of my cigs every time I buy a pack. I like when you smoke it and each word burns away the meaning changes. Never Knows Best/ Knows Best /Best. :)
This song hit so good and fit the mood so well, Naoto running to Mamimi in the dead of night, then when he finally catches up to her, and she turns to him with the most done with life look you'll ever see. There will be nothing like FLCL again, and we all have to treasure its moments
2 more seasons. If it is half as good as the original I will be fine with that. It is immensely hard to live up to something so many have put up on a pedestal as something that defined their childhood.

As an adult i can gratefully say i still dont understand a damn thing about it, but man is it just as good now, almost 20 years later. Life goes by so fast.
this show taught me a lot
+BombThrowinDrunk It taught me that never knows best
It's nice to hear that some understand how deep this show is and how useful the messages can be. And how fulling and life leassoning it really is
Amazing song, really nice to just lay back and think about stuff; I can't help but think of happy things when I hear this. You look back on life and say "wow, look at how far I've come." ya know? The last part always hits me, just incredible.
2024 and this is still one of the best soundtracks of all time and possibly the best song on it.
These songs make me feel emotions for things that haven't happened yet
Even after all these years, I still always come back for this song.
feels like unrequited love, exactly the way they wanted Mami and Naotas relationship to be.
I completely understand that feeling... I myself have been brought to tears (both happy and sad) and thought very deeply about my future and dreams while listening to this song. It's the first song that ever made me feel that way, and I will never forget the peaceful way it flows through your heart.
this always got me crying over something that didn’t happen
Nostalgia in perfection, too glad I bought the blu ray collection. This is the kind of song you can listen to and realize life's going to continue on, its all perspective.
I just found out about FLCL like 4 weeks ago I was confused, then sad when I found out it was only 6 ep. as a fan of anime this has to be my fav anime. soundtrack, story, characters and all its the best
and we are all thankful its only 6 episodes that's all it needed :)
FoolyCooly takes me back to a much simpler time. I love that music can do this to us 🥲 so many early memories of first love and first love lost. The song of a millenia.
its awesome.. its just haning around music..
sitting or lying into some endless fields.. watching into the sky..
try to reach the stars .. o.O
have to wish my tears away..
This song pulls my heart out of my chest every time I listen to it.
Every time I listen to this I really want to watch FLCL again. FLCL was fucking perfect.
Something always feels so oddly nostalgic about this song to me
It's amazing how those short 2 minutes can make you rethink your whole life.
Facts
Quisiera volver el tiempo atrás y escuchar esta canción por primera vez.
This song brings back memories of better times. I wish I had more thumbs so I could give it 5 thumbs up.
Yep. I was as old as naota when I heard this for the first time and it's only gained meaning as I've gotten older.
i come to this song every 2 months and it's amazing, really missed staying late nights watching this show with such confusion.
thank you
"Its hard.."

I first found this song when I was like 11 I still love it..gives mixed feelings that I never experienced
This song gives nostalgia, deja vu and euphoria all at the same time
Love the simplicity of the chill and vibeful groove
This song feels completely different at night time, when you're having a smoke.
I wake up to this awesome melody every day :)
Long live the pillows and long live anime for bringing these great stories to life.
long live the little busters :)
have a beautiful morning with crazy sunshine rays.
and good night to those sleepy heads.
I think kill la kill is similar to this. I haven't seen it though(kill la kill), only gifs of it so I might be wrong :P
Oh boy are you wrong xD
but they are both fun to watch and deliver very different tastes ya know?
KLK is very over the top almost all the time from absurd scaling to just the many fight scenes this series has to offer, I highly recommend this show if you can get past the some what symbolistic fan service (yes, fan service has some meaning in the show)
quite so, but still both are enjoyable anime;
right? I mean one is this multi-art styled comedy with a deep moraled story and one is an over the top fan-serviced action fest from the guys of Gurren Lagaan.
Isn't it Durarara?...w/e
good choices to you too man.
ah, sorry but still good choices.
FLCL was one of my favourite animes the sound track was so raw and somber it just sends chills down your spine everytime.
im glad they put vol2 and 3 but why remove the first one. I need this song man. Its in my daily rotation.
edit: its back yessirrrr
I don't know why this song always reminds me of when my high school sweetheart visited my home town years ago. We spent the night reminiscing. I guess it has a nostalgic effect to it?
reminds me a little of "where is my mind" by the pixies
Love that song
I thought I was the only one to notice
This song has been with me through thick and thin. Love and loss. A ghost is what this song is. A sad, beautiful, indescribable song which traverses space and time.
That song you imagine when a couple are arguing and by the end of it they're just hugging apologizing to each other for being so stupid.
I always cry when I hear this song it’s like I’m rewatching the scene even though I’m only listening to the music.
This song never gets old 😌
I write Never Knows Best on one of my cigs every time I buy a pack. I like when you smoke it and each word burns away the meaning changes. Never Knows Best/ Knows Best /Best. :)
this song stuck with me. it's wonderful.
Nostalgia overload
I'd forgotten how much I loved this song
Who's still listening to this in 2022, stay never knowing best Kings
wow be strong boys
@@amii61 🙏
This song hit so good and fit the mood so well, Naoto running to Mamimi in the dead of night, then when he finally catches up to her, and she turns to him with the most done with life look you'll ever see. There will be nothing like FLCL again, and we all have to treasure its moments
someday, im gonna smoke a cigarette of which I labeled "NEVER KNOWS BEST"
I have and it's bittersweet
+Dustin Horsman Always is, Always is.
*****
so edge
+Steven Edwards beautiful
2 years later and here I am. I've changed so much since then but the want to do this never has. You guys were right, it really is bittersweet.
THIS IS THE BEST DESCRIPTION OF THIS SONG..
i feel EXACLTY THIS WAY..
BUT I DONT FEEL READY AT ALL!!
I dont remember watching this video but I've liked it including many of the comments. That's kinda scary
I play this song before listening to the full version. It adds a really nice effect.
2 more seasons. If it is half as good as the original I will be fine with that. It is immensely hard to live up to something so many have put up on a pedestal as something that defined their childhood.
i always find myself coming back to this song
