G,day Martin from Sydney Australia. Thanks for the latest addition to your channel. The Bonanza 70TB is "purring like a kitten." No courtesy car at the airport, there's usually an ex- police car parked around... surely? The colder air temperature must be there now? Better combustion; hey? 🌏🇭🇲
Most airports in the US do indeed have a courtesy car, but I didn't see anything like it in Friday Harbor. And it wasn't a problem - it was literally less than a ten-minute walk into town. After flying all day from Iowa to Washington the day before, I needed a little exercise anyway! - Martin
WOW! KFHR anti-aircraft defenses detected you as a hostile aircraft, hit your windshield twice but you still manage to land. Good video and nice views.

13:45 isn't it magical when you're going over the islands and peninsulas there? Love it. Bouncing around the islands is so beautiful, great by ferry and even more so by plane. 15:00 love hearing you prepare for the entry procedure.
Magical indeed! And flying is mostly easy if one is prepared. I usually don't like arriving somewhere and then having to "wing it". Thus I walk through these things like pattern entry before I get close, and I teach my students to do it that way, too. Makes it easy once we get there! - Martin
@@flysport_tedder Ah, but verbalizing is key! Even if I am alone in the plane and no camera is running, I verbalize those things. It helps ensure more of my brain is engaged, and makes is less likely that I skip over an item inadvertently. Smart pilots talk to themselves!
Martin, what a beautiful part of the country to fly. I'm going to have to binge watch some more of your videos. Just dropped my plane off at Gardner Lowe for a new autopilot. So, until I get it back will just have to watch some vids. LOL
It's a beautiful area up there . I just put a Super Cub up at KPAE. I've been going to Friday Harbor and to Roche for 20 years. Finally, this year I flew there in my own plane. Next up: Putting on the floats and the tie down at Kenmore.
I love this region Martin. We live in Europe with my wife but visited several times. Friday Harbor is a very nice day trip indeed but would love one day to be able to fly there too. Two seagulls seem to have decided to repaint your windshield just before you landed... It must have been disturbing for your visibility...
Very well done videos. You certainly took the time to think about your installation and it shows. The cameras are stable and the right camera gives us an immersive impression with a wide view. The beauty of flying is the exterior views. Looking forward for your next videos.
Hey Martin! Heard you in the air on your way into Cedar Rapids last night. I was flying my new Diamond DA62 home after transition training. I was the one who said hello!
Ive never flown a real GA a/c in that part of the US. But I instinctively knew that layout as the old Microsoft FSX free flight mode always had you on downwind for Friday Harbor.
Martin, appreciate your videos. Please consider saying power settings and CHT’s/fuel flow during cruise during your future productions. Thanks, smooth rides and tailwinds!
Steve, you can see my cruise power settings quite clearly in many of my videos, when I show the RPM reduction and leaning (to lean-of-peak) at the top of climb. Mostly I cruise at wide-open throttle, 2500 RPM, and around 20 degrees LOP. - Martin
As a long time subscriber of your channel it was nice to see that you almost made it to my home airport YYJ (Victoria BC) and Vancouver Island. You were that close, maybe next time? Could have returned home via Canadian airspace then crossed back into Cedar Rapids Iowa. Safe travels.
Harvey, it would be nice to fly to Canada sometime, but I am on BasicMed which a number of countries recognize and support. Sadly, Canada is not (yet) one of them. Regards, Martin
Those are the kind of days you dream about when you're a pilot. Are you, or have you ever been, to Boeing's widebody assembly plant? It's incredible to see the 747's/777's and DreamLiners roll down the line. Well worth spending a few hours to see it.
I have not been in that factory in Everett, just the offices in that campus. I have been at the Airbus A380 and A350 final assembly lines, though - incredibly large buildings. - Martin
Hopefully, you flew up to Orcas Island and over to Roche Harbor. It looked like a beautiful day to fly. Too bad you had such a beautiful day… right now, the cloud deck is low, it’s wonderfully IFR, the freezing level is way up at 12k, and makes for uncrowded skies and smooth flying. Oh, best report point is Cattle Point
Please stop showing how pretty my home is!! People won’t stop moving here! I fly out of Renton (RNT) and called the Auburn airport (S50) home for many years. Great video as always!
Ha ha! I remember asking a Seattle native many years ago about the weather - on many visits it had mostly been very nice, instead of the stereotypical drizzle. He said: "Don't tell anyone, we have enough people here the way it is!" 🤣 - Martin
Does anybody remember the song "Don't Come to Seattle" which was on an album released by the radio station KEZX back in the 1980's? "Don't come to Seattle, The sun don't shine up here. Oh, it comes out accidentally Maybe once or twice a year. It rains so long that moss grows On the southern side of trees, And summer feels like winter In the clammy ocean breeze."
When I was a kid the entire valley from Kent to Auburn was farmland. When I graduated in 93 a person could still hunt within walking distance of their house on the east hill. Horses were common and I could ride my motorcycle from the high school to tue junior high in the woods without seeing a house. We may not be able to stop the change but I don’t have to like it. I miss my old hometown.
thank you Martin for the nice landscapes and good visibility in this beautiful area. I'd liked to be your copilot on this trip (as an happy Beech owner) but I see there is only one steering wheel 🙂 (and 3 Aspens...). Good work !
Another excellent vid Martin! It’s always great to see some of my “Home Area” too. I’m in the SF Bay Area, but I’m still at home & familiar with this area. (My dad’s originally from Seattle, I have lots of relatives there, and my ex-girlfriend has property on some of the San Juan Islands.) You’re right, it’s absolutely gorgeous! -Cuz PS Clean your windshield. ; )
Fun watching you fly around my hood, glad you got to experience it with such great wx! Not sure why you chose IFR cause you coulda departed left and avoided getting vectored around. Next time at FHR, try the water landing 🤣.
IFR / VFR: When I'm not familiar with the airspace, IFR is my go-to choice. I had never flown around Seattle before, and between the Class Bravo and Charlie and restricted airspace, I felt much better having ATC hold my hand on this flight. Later that weekend, and with guidance from a local instructor, I flew VFR, too. - Martin
WOW, what a great day to be in an airplane............. Great job as usual..... I'm curious, not long ago you had installed avidyne GPS and now going to garmin. why the switch? also noticed some different seat covers.
Always appreciate your professionalism - checklist, systems, and radios management - on your flights. The panel looks great too! Have you ever taken 0TB to Canada?
The other Bonanzas seem to have the V-tail configuration. How did you luck out and find one with a T-taii configuration? It has to be more efficient in a cross wind situation, it seems to me! Enjoy your aircraft!!
The text message ATIS and IFR clearance is only available at the big Bravo airports? Or is this a subscription? Never heard of this, was wondering if you can shine a light on that.
I’m not sure what Martin uses but I can share what I use. ForeFlight is capable of receiving the pre-departure clearance (PDC) at designated airports. The airport must have the feature in their system. I fly from a class C airport which has PDC. It’s a fantastic feature to use. I receive my PDC via email but I assume you could setup your profile to receive via text message. Happy flying!
I live in the Seattle area and frequently take people to KFHR for their first flight in a small plane. It is a gorgeous flight, fairly short, a short walk from the airport to downtown, car rentals at the north end of the airport if needed, etc. I have never been to KSEA, most people visiting fly into KBFI (where I learned to fly actually). Might need to go there just to get my Fly WA stamp someday. Have fun in the PNW and look out for icing 😅
I’m still trying to figure out the speeds and power settings for the different phases of flight in the bonanza. Every POH I look at is a little bit different. It was interesting that you cruise at 2500 RPM when I would think it would be around 23.
In my opinion, the POH makes it look more complicated than it needs to be. I cruise wide open throttle, 2500 RPM, lean of peak. If I want to reduce cruise power, I start by pulling the RPM back (2400 or 2300 RPM). Or lean more aggressively (which means less HP when on the lean side). - Martin
@@martinpauly I thought Lycoming doesn’t recommend too much leaning because of detonation issues. What is your approach speed? What is your over the Numbers speed Mark does 100 kn full flaps require about 16 inches?
@@aviatortrucker6285 I wouldn't listen to Lycoming or Continental for leaning advice on their engines. The best resource was the "Advanced Pilots Seminar"; unfortunately that's no longer being offered.
