This video is why MAB is at the top of the food chain. The passion he has for the instrument is staggering, and his professionalism is large and in charge. Not just speed, but musical speed. Hands down the world's greatest guitar player. And far too unknown to the wider community. This guy should be world famous in my opinion. I had the pleasure to meet him here in Australia when he was here a few years ago. Such a super nice guy.
Justin Meikle Literally, who could play at his speed and technically proficient. Understandably we had Shawn Lane, but he's unfortunately no longer with us so that means Michael is the current most technically proficient, and most diverse player.
MAB deserves much more praise than he gets in the world. i dont understand when people complain his music being too robotic and lacking feel.. they mustve never even picked up any of his albums tbh
JayB B Most of those people are just jealous because they can't play at his level of technical proficiency. I know exactly what they are talking about! I love his playing but writing a super hit song that will last the test of time is something I have not seen him do. Not saying he can't or has not and possibly not been credited etc. being a nice guy like he is that is totally possible. I will say that he is an incredible player and I admire him very much as a skill level I have yet to achieve. His albums have the same issue many great musicians have and that is the way the material is composed as a piece. I can listen to him all day and go wow but a non-guitar player would not like it as much as say a Rolling Stone album which has nowhere near the technical skill but the composition and the writing is what makes the Stones played more. Who says "Hey play that guitar rock song with no vocals and continuous solos again!" Oh wait, they do when they are drunk and Steve V. die hards! Had the absolute pleasure of meeting Michael Angelo a few times, he really really really is the nicest person in this business. Thank's for this interview Troy!
GREAT interview! I saw SO MANY amazing shows in the 80s at the Country Club - it really was one of the best places. Waters in San Pedro was small and cool too. Not to mention so many great shows at Troubadour. I could go on for hours. But I love how Michael is quite humble and very honest about it all. He really is cool. Really a great interview. I loved Holland but so always loved MAB's bands.

I had such a terrible childhood I missed most of this stuff, man I feel so lost watching this dude mike and Troy. I wish I could meet these guys. I started to play guitar again after 40 years. I'm struggling now trying to find my way.

I have loved guitar and played guitar since the late 80s.Guitars and cars are the twin pillars of my life from then till right now.It always amazes me when I discover one of the truly incredible guitar players - how had it taken tiill now for me to hear of them. There are two truly exceptional yet very different guitar players that I've discovered since around Xmas (2019 it's now the end of Mar 2020 for thos reading this 5 years from now before Coronavirus changed everything forever lol). Within days I heard Robin Trower and that late 60s/early 70s brand of blues rock with a healthy dose of Hendrix in there too is absolutey 100% my favourite kind of guitar but my musical awakenings and where I suppose my musical sensibilities were formed was firmly in the 80s hard rock, metal and thrash/speed metal sounds. All that crazy fret wanking, neo classical ,technical virtuosity that ruled the mid to late 80s is where it all began for me even if it was less about the extreme shredders and more the likes of Angus Young/Gary Moore or Kirk Hammett that were my first heroes rather than the Satriani's and Via's that blew my mind with their sheer ability but didn't hit the spot quite like the aformentioned. Anyway,I then learnt about this fellah here and I couldn't believe I'd never knew of him all this time cos I feel like I damn well should have done, somehow I dropped the ball on that one.As I said I have always been less about the true technical wizards on the guitar with the exception of Mr Yngwie J who constantly blows my mind with how good he is yet MAB who'd I absolutley class in that very, very select number of truly virtouso technical guitar players who are on a level all their own is probably the best and finest of these type of playes I've yet heard. And like Mr YJM I find MAB as good to listen to as he is a guitarist. I absolutely appreciate Vai and Satriani et all and don't see it as anything bad to hear them play but there'ssomething a little clinical about them for my taste,I find that with a lot of shredders but Mr MAB is the full package,he gots the technical ability, the awesome skill and precision that any shredder/technical guitarist has to have but he's clearly has a sense of what's musical and melodic that was what set YJ M apart. The way he comes across as utterly himself with no pretence or self importance than some of the truly gifted players have in spades. I read one comment that said you'd go by his house to buy something from him and end up talking away to the guy for hours .That kind of sums up what I mean perfectly.
I don’t know how I surfed to this video, but glad I did!! MAB is so much fun to watch!!! Such an interesting guy with so much knowledge to share and so talented. I could sit there and listen to him talk and jam all day long.
I met MAB in a little music store clinic about 5 or 6 years ago. He was with the Dean Guitar guy who plays bass (sorry, can't remember name) but he is an genuine about music and guitar and metal as you see in videos. He really is the ultimate ambassador to rep us diehard metalheads. A really passionate, wysiwyg kind of guy who is in the top five metal guitarist *EVER* A real treasure.
Another home run Troy and Co. Really enjoyed Michael's war stories of things back then and how they are today. The biggest thing I took away from this was how Michael has had no injuries which is a testament to his economic technique giving him years of lighting longevity with more to come. Michael, thanks for sharing. Awesome. Interesting. Fun. Steve-o in Boise.
I absolutely love cracking the code. the way you made it and explained everything really opened my mind on playing guitar. thank you troy! Micheal angelo batio rules as well haha. True god
Mike's always a cool dude. So chill, yet underneath his chill factor is absolute fearsome technique and musicianship. Met Mike and had him sign my #1 guitar. Super cool guy.
Awesome question about the synchronization of the hands, great answer mab, thank you for your time and help for us all! Also love the mention of Guthrie, I love the technique as means to an end philosophy that you both share. Awesome stuff! Thanks Troy, you're doing a great service to the guitar players now and forever to get these awesome people to talk about this stuff. Truly appreciate it.
Man other than being an amazingly talented musician Mike is like the sweetest coolest guy. I could just listen to him for hours and hours just talk guitar and music, he's awesome.
Troy, you did a fantastic job on this interview and I never heard Michael talk. We used to slag him off all the time with the double guitar thing, but really....hats of him. He came off as a great guy who REALLY CARES about his music. 100% respectable. You my friend... like I told you in an email, all your work that you've done is truly deserving of an honorary Phd. I should know as I've taught music (guitar) in the Ivory Tower from my entire professional life. Keep up the great work!!!
Thank you Troy! My technique has improved dramatically since I began incorporating your picking advice into my daily practice., and the benefits have given me a new level of inspiration.
Great video Batio is a great guy. I saw him at a Music store in Maryland he was so cool I bought one of his signature guitars which he played on stage he signed the guitar as well great guy !!
You guys are top notch! Troy I honestly hope that all the work you put into everything like cracking the code these interviews pays off!sincerely. and if not sleep well knowing you have helped thousands of us if not millions aspiring guitar players. Legendary man!
I honestly love this man so much. I was never 100% into his music, but more like leisurely listening to his album stuff from time to time and really enjoying his thing, but him as a person is a whole new level. He is so pure and so honest. I would love to hang out with Michael for a beer and talk about guitar even though I have never played the guitar in my life.
I think technique manifests in different ways for most people. That is exactly why I love your channel Troy. These deep technical dives have helped me realise that if it feels right and it is giving you the results without any pain, there's no right and wrong. Can't thank you enough.
Wow thank you for this upload, it really made me feel like I was in the interview with you all. You guys seem really awesome thank you for all the tips this inspired me so much you are seriously underrated. You need tons of subscribers dude you deserve it
Ah yes, Michael Angelo. Back in the midv80s, a buddy of mine brought over his Video. He's the guy that literally made me put down my guitar way back. I was like "if THAT is where guitarists are going, I'm out. I can't do that". What a monster. Seems like such a cool dude, too. And random comment. Your logo (the bridge).....very cool!!! Great interview! Love your channel.
Michael is the master, and such a humble guy despite that. I was lucky enough to see him live at Guitar Center in Seattle years ago when he gave a free live clinic, promoting Washburn guitars. It was one of the loudest and most incredible displays of technique I've ever seen.
This guy has the most tight and controlled picking movements I've ever seen. Been my idol since the 90s. His movements are so precise. He is extremely gifted with amazing dexterity.
wow, Batio just said you can't move your wrist side to side and it's funny to hear him say that with Andy Wood and Troy basically doing that. Batio has as unusual a picking form as Marty Friedman does. I've never seen anyone else do those 2 forms besides them.
Mike is on the right track here. The Di Meola motion actually doesn't move side to side either, it moves on a slight diagonal ( ruclips.net/video/KH08g_xmlng/видео.html ). The more we look into this, including interviewing researchers who study joint motion, it appears that the diagonal wrist motions are the fastest ones.
@@troygrady thx fir the reply. I can only get speed using my elbow motion or bicep motion I can't do it with wrist or fingers So I guess all kinda play around with The Two that seemed to work for me. Anyway thanks for all the vids !
Elbow is super common, and a great tool to have. When we ask players to do a fast tremolo, it's one of the joints we see most commonly. By contrast, everyone can do fast wrist motion, but it can sometimes be difficult on an actual guitar to identify the feel of moving only the hand and nothing else. One thing that has worked for us are table tap tests. Here's one of them ( ruclips.net/video/L6PUCTaNAOw/видео.html ). We have several of these, and even total beginners / non-guitarists commonly register over 200bpm on these. The feeling of doing fast wrist motion on an actual guitar is very similar to rapid tapping, where you just focus on the tapping part of the motion and ignore the return trip. But as you say, tooling around is the way to go. Casual experimentation is a great method for learnming unfamiliar motions.
@@troygrady I can move my wrist fast in a tapping motion (like revving a motorcycle that way, you know, like knocking on a door) but I cannot move it side to side at all. Just doesn't happen for me. So... I guess for me anyway I just have to try elbow and that bicep thing Eddie VH does when he's picking the little E string fast with the bend wrist style and just be happy with one of those. I'm not going to invest tons of time on pick practice but I have enjoyed your vids quite a lot just cuz I also have a general inquisitive mind and the whole picking thing was a weakness and mystery for me so your vids have been very informative, interesting, entertaining and.... depressing because I know that I won't achieve most of the elite picking skills of say Steve Morse or Andy Wood or Troy Grady but i'm not too depressed. Music is fun no matter what skill level you are at. Thanks for the link and replies!!!! I will check the link now.
@@troygrady I recently realized this while studying my wrist motions for "push-pull" technique on the drumset... The wrist can move much much faster diagonally than the vertical "hand shake" motion. I would love to chat with you about some common philosophies I've found from looking at DW/UW PS as analogues to left hand/right hand leading on drums, and how some of the best drummers have "cracked the code" for their instrument. Buddy Rich's push pull apparently involved rotating the wrist slightly, simultaneously closing the fingers to get that snap hit after the free stroke, rather than an "exaggerated hand shake" in the vertical... which you see work for drummers on slow/med tempo swing. Any fast tempos and I'm finding that diagonal wrist motion naturally comes into play, and it feels like the same muscles as when I'm alt/trem picking comfortably without holding tension in the arm. The vertical motion is simply inefficient compared to the diagonal.
this channel, how you guys think about and execute such next levels as a whole and regards to how you show and analyze techniques is ABSOLUTELY BRILLIANT!!!! NEXT LEVEL!!!
MAB did a guitar session in my town. Amazing lessons as well as watching him only 10 ft from where I was sitting was rather daunting. Got to meet him too! Really cool dude and he signed my favorite guitar, my beloved Gibson Les Paul Classic!
MAB is the kind of guy who I consider to be the ambassador of metal. The elder statesman of rock. If we all got together and had to have one guy represent us, it would be him. Passionate, devoted and fully invested in his craft. And a guy you would like to do what Troy did here. Just fabulous. Pure magic.
I love Troy and what he's doing for the community..That being said in my opinion the best way to learn this stuff is a combination of tips and actually just exploring the techniques your self and finding what feels best for you. After 25 years of playing I've premanantly changed my grip. Even Troy and MAB says that everyone is different so don't think your going to figure this out with out searching in the dark and lots of trial and error.
Michael is just a class guy. And it's not only speed, but harmony, rhythm, timing, phrasing and all the little nuances that place him at the top of the food chain. Listen to Rainforest. He really backs off the blazing speed for a more thoughtful, elegant musical piece. And he's a student of the history of guitar. This was a well made documentary type video, and I am glad I watched. Liked and subbed.
+Sekeletu I totally agree. The difference between MAB and Yngwie, is that MAB really wants to help people play better and NOT just show off how fast he can play. I would love to see Satriani and Vai do a G3 with MAB. It's not too late!
I truly admire Michael. He's a workhorse musician. He's paid his dues, to play the blues. Lovely guy in person too, met him a handful of times around LA. Great stuff Troy! Cheers, ApB
MAB iOS an Amazing human being . What you see is what you get ! He does a live stream on FB at 7pm eastern . He not only cracks me up . But I always learn something. I think I have a man crush !!! Thanks Mike !!
I can't believe he is 61! I had no idea he was almost in his thirties been he started Nitro.. now that I have this knowledge, I have to see this man play live sooner rather lol than later
Never been a huge fan of Batio's music with the exception of a few songs (always respected his ability, though), but he seems like a really good guy. I'd love to chill and have a Beer with him.
I very much appreciate the hard work and dedication you put forth in producing these extraordinary videos complete with kewl animations and detailed explanations. The demonstrations are a BIG Help in opening up my eyes and fingers. Thank You!
When I first started playing guitar I was certain that MAB's picking technique was not optimal, and would only work with a gazillion extra hours of practice. However, after I switched to classical piano years back I've come to understand technique on a whole different level. To play a note on piano, you can use finger motion, wrist and forearm - a fourth motion applies to the thumb which can be "rotated". To play the fastest possible, one must combine these motions. One may choose to depend mostly on one of them, but you still need conscious relaxation in the lesser ones. MAB picking motion is not a simple "forearm" motion as I once thought, but involves both the fingers and wrist as well. Some of his thoughts on technique are consistent with technique schools of the classical world; ie. if you can't play it slowly you can't play it fast, but don't practice slowly to aquire speed - push your limits to stumble on the correct motions that enable fast playing, then slow them down and work on them. If you try to learn something slowly and speeding up gradually you may hit a speedwall because some slow motions just can't be speeded up. One of the most important aspects Really great interview. Rock on MAB!
Why a guy. Seen a lot of MAB over the years and he is what you see. No heirs and graces, you get him. How refreshing it is to see someone LISTEN to what you say. I'm not just talking about somebody with fame but people in general seldom have that intent on listening to you but would rather prepare what they're going to say next.
He inspired me to become a faster and more versatile player even though I am mainly a death and thrash player, his various exercises helped me to expand my horizon musically
Mike is not only a fantastic player, but a really good person. I remember messaging him on his forum and he made the time to reply to me. He's a inspirational person and highly motivational. I studied speed kills and lives, and his exercises made me a way better player to. Great guy and musician.

Michael Angelo Batio is Master Class indeed. Thank you Troy for this outstanding interview.
Mike seems like such a great guy, love this interview. Thanks for everything you do Troy, this is so valuable for anyone into guitar technique:)
This is sooooooooo good!!! Thanks Troy! I would give my left nut to see you interview Malmsteen! Love the Chanel dude!
R0BERTMAY Yngwie would be funny don't forget to bring the donuts for him lol
Hey Troy, Im so glad to see you’re well past the 100k subscribers mark! Well done and keep it up! Cheers man
Awesome question about the synchronization of the hands, great answer mab, thank you for your time and help for us all!
Thank you so much for having MAB again. Always such a great educational experience. Thank you Michael.
He is the most down-to-earth and humble metal guitarist that I've ever seen! I'd love to just hang out and jam with him one day!
Legendary man!
amazing two guys, one cracking the code and the other humble showing the code, and also history of Metal, like it much
I honestly love this man so much. I was never 100% into his music, but more like leisurely listening to his album stuff from time to time and really enjoying his thing, but him as a person is a whole new level. He is so pure and so honest. I would love to hang out with Michael for a beer and talk about guitar even though I have never played the guitar in my life.
Brilliant interview. Who would've guessed what a great guy MAB is?!
I think technique manifests in different ways for most people. That is exactly why I love your channel Troy. These deep technical dives have helped me realise that if it feels right and it is giving you the results without any pain, there's no right and wrong. Can't thank you enough.
Thank you so much for putting it on youtube. I haven't been hyped like this to watch a video for ages. Going to the refrigerator now! 🎸🎸🎸
Never have checked out Michaelangelo before for some reason now I'm a fan! Great interview and I love your channel!
Great interview. I see mutual respect coming from both sides. Real chemistry. Great to watch. Thanks very much.
Wow thank you for this upload, it really made me feel like I was in the interview with you all. You guys seem really awesome thank you for all the tips this inspired me so much you are seriously underrated. You need tons of subscribers dude you deserve it
MAB is such a cool person, amazing musician and a fantastic teacher, thanks for the interview and your channel, it's a great resource!
Badass ever since the first day i came across him on RUclips i've been amazed, awesome interview and what a great guy.
Troy it was really exciting watching the original livestream...really happy you added this back up/
rock on man...you rule. :)
Only 202,000 subscribers? Carm on! Spread the word. Troy is possibly be the best guitar teacher in history :-)
MAB is the kind of guy who I consider to be the ambassador of metal. The elder statesman of rock. If we all got together and had to have one guy represent us, it would be him. Passionate, devoted and fully invested in his craft. And a guy you would like to do what Troy did here. Just fabulous. Pure magic.
Always and forever...great video...great person...really inspirational...
Remarkable episode here. Really enjoyed this!
Michael can play any style with any technique. He's one of the great. He doesn't give two shits about what people thinks. Love him.
Batio is the King of Shred. And that's all there is to that.
What an awesome interview!! Thank you!
No problem! Mike is the best, thank him!
Thank you for the great Work mate, really appreciate, much love from germany
You should try to get Yngwie for the next one! Thank all the 3 of you for all the great content! Take care guys and greetings from a Poland!
Malmsteen would act like a dick, as he always does. Not the greatest person to interview live.
+Sekeletu I totally agree. The difference between MAB and Yngwie, is that MAB really wants to help people play better and NOT just show off how fast he can play. I would love to see Satriani and Vai do a G3 with MAB. It's not too late!
+hedgehog1965uk My thoughts exactly about G3 with MAB, that would be awesome! I'd definitely buy a DVD.
To Satriani I would add interview with 4 guitarists: Vai, Beck, Gilbert, Al Di Meola
Michael sounds great never sloppy and can play anything and sound great
His guitar is like the energy bar on your watch in Goldeneye 64.
Nay hell yeah it does....nice find
nice *
I knew it reminded me of something.
I was thinking the same thing haha
No wonder it always looked so familiar hahah
Really enjoyed Watching! Thanks Troy Awesome Interview!
That was just great all the way around. Thank you
I truly admire Michael.
MAB is one of the greatest guitar heros of all time, thanks guys
Absolutely fabulous interview.
Tom Morello took lessons from MAB?? damn!! Mike seems like an amazing guy.
Tom took one good look at MAB's speed and said 'fuck it. Where's my effects pedal."
barilyn francolino but that was disrespectful to Tom Morello fans
@@ApolloSol 😂
ApolloSol Tom has pretty underrated chops tbf, his solo on 'Take the Power Back' shows he had plenty of practice
blasterkid And Tom was already a great player. That’s saying something
I very much appreciate the hard work and dedication you put forth in producing these extraordinary videos complete with kewl animations and detailed explanations. The demonstrations are a BIG Help in opening up my eyes and fingers. Thank You!
He is such a down to earth man! Nice interview!
One of the most important aspects
Really great interview. Rock on MAB!
thanks Troy a National for showing us a great interview.
Extremely well done, thank you both.
the best guitar channel , the best content , can't wait for new stuff!
I'm starting to love this guy,the way his playing double guitar, wow that's crazy men
Awesome stuff Troy. thanks a ton for this. I've spent a good 3 hours today watching this over and over. so many good nuggets in this video.
MAB is so cool. He is a great teacher and TRUE genius. I really like this guy.
Why a guy. Seen a lot of MAB over the years and he is what you see. No heirs and graces, you get him.
How refreshing it is to see someone LISTEN to what you say. I'm not just talking about somebody with fame but people in general seldom have that intent on listening to you but would rather prepare what they're going to say next.
Best hour of my life in 2017 so far. How about Buckethead as next guest?
Oh man! Thanks. We appreciate it.
Yes!
Having "Psycho Buddy" on would be unreal.
Buckethead doesn't talk
What a genuinely nice man and killer player. Massive thanks for the upload.
For sure, Mike is a sweetheart and we're super grateful he was able to do this.
He inspired me to become a faster and more versatile player even though I am mainly a death and thrash player, his various exercises helped me to expand my horizon musically
