I remember taking the FE exam twice when it was open book. Then it switched to computer based and I passed. The main difference is I put in the work on the last attempt. Now I am taking my PE for the third time, 2 times open book failed, and now its computer based, but Ive been putting in 6 hours a day studying. Get a testmasters course and study study study. You are your own weakest link.
You just earned a new subscriber. Thank you for this video, I just got out the military and on the electrical engineering track at college. I am starting to get into major specific courses and just saw that I have to take the PE and FE exam in my final 2 years.
Thanks for the sub Keith! Electrical engineering is a beast but you got this. I look forward to hearing your success stories as you pass both you FE & PE.
It varies per test. For Civil The morning topics are mathematics through surveying and for afternoon it is water resources through construction engineering
Yes you will need to register again through the ncees website. Once you pay and select a test location you can then see what times and dates that are available.
Hi Coach James! I am on my third year of Civil Engineering in Dominican Republic and Im interest on this particular exam, do you know if the FE exam is exclusive to US citizens or I can sign up to take the exam as a Dominican citizen?
Unfortunately I did not see the Dominican Republic listed on the NCEES website. FE exam isn’t restricted to US citizens but it looks like DR does not have a national engineering society that is recognized by the US in order to take this test.
It does not look like the NCEES has partnered with the Dominican Republic. I don't know why that is. You can take the test outside of the US by being in an approved Country which can be found here: ncees.org/licensure/international-professionals/
hi james, my question is , how to know each part of book ( FE_CIVIL_REVIEW_MANUAL) , I read is in exam or not because some formula in that book not in the handbook
I have a math degree with limited knowledge in engineering concepts. Does the study guide break down topics for those new to engineering so that taking the exam is doable?
visit ncees.org and login. Then under useful documents click view reference handbooks. Choose FE Reference Handbook and you will be able to download it from there. I hope this helps @shekharranjanpaul7588
No, sadly they do not but with practice you will know what topic is being covered and if you can solve it within I say a minute. But they do go in order of the manual. So for example they wont give you a engineering economics problem and then a structural engineering problem.
Is it easier with it being a computer based examination with respect to ctrl+F to just find the equations you need out of the NCEES handbook? Or are you still given a hardcopy for the examination? Thanks for the insight!
Yes William it is much easier. Everything is on the computer. You can search through the handbook and the topics are bookmarked so you can easily flip through to certain sections.
hey i want to know about FE exam. I am an international student in USA . I completed my bachlores from civil engineering in INdia. right now I am doing masters in Engineering management but I want to take an FE Civil ec=xam. can I take and exam? and FE is common for every field of FE civil is different. can you please tell me?
I looked into this and did not see anything in Malaysia for the FE but I did see that they are eligible for the PE. Before you can take the PE you have to take the FE though which is confusing. The main thing is that the University that you graduated from is EAC/ABET accredited and is for 4 years. I would check with the University that you graduated from in Malaysia to see which locations you can use to take the FE exam. Two links that may be helpful is the international requirements. I have not personally taken her course but Genie's youtube channel alone helped me to pass. She is super solid and gives a ton of examples and great detail. I would definitely recommend. If you are looking for a course that walks you step by step through the problems I think she is great.
For most you do. Typically you need a 4 year accredited degree. Only a few where I seen you can use work experience and be able to sit for the test. It varies from state to state though. I would go to the ncees website to see your state’s specific requirements

It's not that simple. The material difficulty on the FE is not too bad. When I was in my senior year, there were people who didn't study at all and passed. If you're a senior or a recent grad who paid attention in class you'll probably do fine. Learning how to navigate the reference manual during the exam and practicing finding things in there for a sample exam is probably the most important thing to prepare for. I'd say a good 80% of the answers in the FE are in the reference manual in some form.
