This is PiGRRL, a DIY gameboy. Look at it next to the new Pocket Pi GRRL - It’s like half the size, but just as powerful, with all sorts of retro games.
This is a really fun project. You can learn about electronics and the raspberry pi by building one!
We have a full tutorial on how to build this project on the adafruit learning site, it’s super fun!
The Raspberry Pi A+ is small and adorable linux computer. The adafruit PiTFT is a 320x240 2.4’ display. This pi hat makes a great circuit sandwich!
For the controls we’re using tactile switches and a Perma-Proto wired to a Pi Cable - Much better than hacking apart your Super Nintendo controller, save it for another project!
To power this project, we're using the PowerBoost 1000c. It lets you charge while you’re playing - we’re calling it smart charging. 2000mAh of lithium gives you plenty of time to save that princess.
How about that audio? 8-Bit never sounded so good with this tiny class-D amplifier and a mini metal speaker.
Speaking of small, our 3D printed enclosure is even smaller than the original pocket gameboy. How do you like that BMO?
Check out the Adafruit tutorial. You can get all the parts to build this project on the shop at adafruit dot com.

MY gawd you just gave me the video i was hoping I'd stumble upon but figured deep down in my gut that noone can even possibly show me that much coolness in one video. I just discovered this whole new PI thing crammed into a DMG Gameboy yesterday and my whole world is irrelevant to me lol. I NEED TO MAKE THIS RIGHT MEOW

You said there is no need to hack up an old SNES controller but I already have one that's in bits.
Can I use the D-Pad and button from it in the 4 button version? Are they a direct fit?

this may come across as stupid but is there a more in depth video on how you assemble the whole project and could you use bread board pcb instead of the perma proto.
also im using a gba case so would there be a bigger battery i could use to extend battery life.

So im about to try the four button version (Super mario world :D) and from what i've read, the PiTFT buttons can be mapped for use in the emulator? (ie, exit ROM, shoulder buttons, start/select) is this true?

Hi Adafruit, just one more snag I'm facing on pocket PIgrrl, if you can point me in the right direction that will be super great. Whenever I press the 'UP' on DPAD which is wired to #12 (GPIO 18) and wire #9 (PCB GND) , the PI TFT screen is killed(lights out) as soon as I release the button it comes back to normal, RPi and its audio remain working as normal even when screen goes out. As long as the Button is pressed the screen remains off. All other buttons function normally n I didn't fiddle with any settings. Please suggest some measures to remove this problem.

      @adafruit  9 лет назад

Gaurav Dalip Hey there. It sounds like you need to cut the trace on the back of the PiTFT - labeled GPIO #18 Lite. That turns the backlight on/off on the display. Check out the PiTFT page on the guide on how to properly cut the trace. learn.adafruit.com/pocket-pigrrl/2-dot-4-pitft

the pi has audio out i believe. if the specific pi you use doesn't you can get a usb soundcard for 10$ where its premade andnall you have to do is cram it in the housing
you could make your own DAC but this is just the cheaper/quicker idea. i realize as i type this im a bit late to the punch

I want to follow your instructions for the PiGRRL that you have on your website. I don't wan to do the PocketPiGRRL because the screen is too small.
