Even worse considering you are putting a battery just on top the compute module, so not only the cm is getting hot, but the battery aswell, not a good combination. To be fair, there's not a lot of room on a gameboy pocket and the DDR2 socket is a little bit high too...
You already do play it natively on the switch. Apart from the screen, it's not that much bigger... The same components go inside smartphones. What's difficult is emulation which requires a whole lot more cpu/gpu performance than native.
Hey Wermy, good to see you out and about. I appreciate you acknowledging the current situation; a lot of youtubers are just continuing like nothing is happening and it feels weird.
Hey Wermy! Are there any configurations you have to make to run the CM3+? I put one in my Circuit Shield and it doesn’t boot.. I assumed Kite’s github file for the shield would work, however it doesn’t. Any ideas?
@@jrok96 All in, it'll come out just under $200 depending on shipping to your country and where you get your shell, buttons etc. If you get wermy's 3D printed parts and Bluish Squirrel's glass lens, that'll add another $30-40
I think you'd be far better off using a safe edge file in some of the places where you used a craft knife here, particularly in cutting the slot for the HDMI port.
great video! love to see the joystick being added. I'm thinking of making my own build. what is the ideal button layout of emulation up n64? I have seen builds like this with back buttons and 6 actions buttons and a joystick. is that necessary ?
I’m looking into doing a similar build for the circuit shield and really like the Nintendo switch thumb-stick on the psp analog stick and was wondering how you did that.
Hey Wermy! 1. You should update the preorder forum link on your blog post! The new preorders are now live at sudomod.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=38&t=11002 2. Are you still planning to release the printed files for free on Thingiverse as you mentioned in this video? 3. Are you making the JoyCon style analog cap/cover available for purchase or the .stl file available for download? Thank you!
Love seeing these videos!!! I get that it's very easy to get into a funk and lose motivation to do what we love so much. I'm printing up some shields and straps like many others so that is a great start to helping fix a bigger problem. If doing nothing else helps you right now, do nothing at all!!! I've been seeing a lot of my subscribed youtuber's pushing out more content than usual and it's personally annoying. You do what you feel is right for you and your family so don't worry about what we feel. I liked this a lot! Any chance someone has a link to a Game Boy shell that we can print to make these projects? Any other good projects to print up you'd recommend?
Interesting! this board could be configured to have an ABC, XYZ for 6 button genesis and arcade gameplay, also 4 direction buttons, an A & B button and analogue for N64 gameplay, but no shoulder buttons eh? ... why does every handheld these days have to have seemingly everything yet omits (at least) one random feature that just breaks it for me?? =/ Edit: ohhh, it does have L and R buttons..... still missing second analogue, still though, pretty awesome game boy! =D
I think you should do a tutorial on running Android on switch and installing ROMs on it. A lot of us already own a switch and want to make a handheld emulator but don’t have the time or money to do it.
I still don't get why modders keep using the classic Game Boy Shell if they pretend to emulate modern systems like N64 or Playstation. The form factor just doesn't work because the trigger buttons. Game Boy Advance she'll is the perfect choice.
Still haven’t put my circuit sword together! I know the process is MUCH easier than the spare parts zero I built off of your first videos, but the first step is the hardest! Lol
@KellyVanHalen Your just the person i want to talk to. Any way you could provide us with a approx price breakdown for this project? A few of us would greatly appreciate it!!
It’s not that difficult, just time consuming and requires some tools. There is already plenty of ready made Gameboy emulator hardware if you want a prebuilt. This specific option was intentionally designed for the DIY community so people could build a fully custom one.
I think it's a very good idea but Raspberry Zero is a weak solution. While emulating games even on Raspberry Pi 3, I noticed problems with game dynamics such as stuttering frames, music, etc.
I have recently really gotten into retro gaming and consoles. I bought a Sega Genesis Mini. Ordered two of the licensed 6 button controllers. I'm not very keen on doing in depth mods with a PC, so I'ma send it to a pro modder when I get paid again to have the system overclocked and get most Genesis games on a USB. My father in law noticed my enthusiasm and gave me an original SNES console with two controllers and 23 games! I need to get component cables for it though. After I finish my Genesis and SNES projects I wanna do something with a Gameboy or Game Gear. Glad there are channels like this that fuel my new hobby and teach me things I would've never known otherwise. Thank you.
Man I wanna do a project like this but I just don’t have the money or skill in soldering to do it. I can get wires sure, but tiny pads are hell for me to get right.
Id love Something Like this with the Pi 4. I know that the battery life would not be great, but... Ps with double Resolution. N64 with good Performance, besides some issues loading stuff in.... Even ps 2 emulation if you overclock it!
Wermy, when you and Helder release the MintyPi Lite will you keep selling the MintyPi v3 parts? I ask because I like some of the features included with the V3 Parts. Please respond if you can
If you’re looking to buy the DIY kit, the preorders are live again now. But as far as a finished product, no he doesn’t. There is already plenty of ready made Gameboy emulator hardware if you want a prebuilt one, and they usually cost less than this DIY route. Plenty of people! There’s a decently large modding and DIY community when it comes to Gameboy stuff. If you’re looking for a prebuilt option, there’s already plenty of Gameboy emulator hardware available to buy, for much less than this. Sorry the audio is a little all over the place in this one! 😅 How are you guys holding up out there? Crazy stressed, crazy bored, or both?
wermy waiting for this video to come out
Both. Still waiting for Helder to make more PCB boards.
Both for sure. My highschool decided that they are going to give us even more work.

Any concerns about cooling? The compute module can get hot!
This is not for an exhaust play.

Love your work so much, you inspire me a lot and hope that i will make my own project in the next months
Since the board has wifi built in, it maybe possible to play pc games via steam link. Imagine playing Minecraft or Stardew Valley on a gameboy.

ive always wanted to do this but could never figure out where to start. I love your creations, even though I haven't tried to make any yet.
Congrats, its awesome!
Do you plan to do the same but with a gameboy advance sp case ? Would be great.

It would be really cool if there was a pre-modified STL of the shell so a custom shell could just be printed on a resin printer.
Agree 100%

I’ve been seeing more availability/attention on custom builds using the Advance shell. So perhaps soon we’ll see more options for this 👍🏻
You butcher a classic device...just to put a boring Raspberry Pi into its' shell.
Newly made clone shells, fine: do as you will.
NOT. THE. ORIGINALS.
The original one shown from a few years ago was broken to begin with. Everything else has been clone/repro shells.
Good! Now just make it work with arm tiny 11and its a full gaming console
Can you link to the tactile switches you were using please? Did not see mention of them on the parts and stuff link page

What kind of resin are you using for the buttons and joystick cap?
Cool divoom also is it possible to add .exe files on it if so plz add super mario 2dyssey
Can u use any Game Boy Color shell? For this Projekt ?

I am strongly against ripping apart a gameboy to build a shitty emulator

Great video wermy. What tact switches and caps are you using? I can’t find any good silicon capped switches that are small enough 😒
Just wonder, does one joystick is enough to play PS 1 games? I believe there should be two
With all of these premade PCBs and plug-and-play parts, the Gameboy Zero is starting to feel less like a project and more like a product.
