Thank you soooo much, I have been struggling with this for weeks. I make bags and have just started making my own designs. I managed to draft a pattern in Illustrator, but just couldn't figure out how to transfer it for printing. I thought I had managed it but had the dreaded 'missing strip' on the edges of each page, so your tutorial was wonderful. I found the one where you created your own template for printing - that was super hepful too. I only have one little issue, not down to you, probably the way I've created my design, but when I put my pattern pieces on my artboards, it covers my registration marks. How do I get my pattern pieces to be 'transparent' so I can see the registration marks through them??? Thanks for any help, I can prob manage without as it's my pattern and I know what/where it shoukd line up but if I send it to anyone else, they may need the registration marks. You could always create or add your registration marks to a different layer to your pattern within Adobe Illustrator. You can then arrange the layers ensuring that your registration marks sit on top of your pattern. Give it a shot!

Hi Falak and Sara! If you have a European printer please use the A4 Print templates. If you have a US printer, please use the US-Letter print templates. Also, be sure to check that you are printing at full scale, so 100% scale. Do not select the "Fit To Page" option. When it comes to printer borders, each printer is different and has different options, so please consult your printers user guide or do a google search on how to change those settings. Otherwise, we advise always setting your border to the smallest amount or use borderless printing.
Thank you so much for this... great info and so clearly explained! really helpful. I'm just wondering one more thing though, is it possible to save a picture of the whole grid with the pattern layout on. This will help demonstrate how the A4 pages all fit together like a jigsaw.... but I want the one image on one A4 page to show how they all look one pieced together (basically what we see on the illustrator screen before saving as a PDF. (other PDF sewing patterns I have bought online tend to also include this layout preview page) Hope this makes sense... that would be really useful to know :) thank you.
Hi Margaret, that's a great question and luckily it's relatively simple to do. Simply, take a screenshot of your pattern layout. MAC: You can do this on a mac by using these two keys in combination: "Command + 4" keys on your keyboard. This will give you a tool that allows you to click and drag the area you would want to take a screenshot of. The image will then be saved to your desktop. PC: You can do this on a PC by using these three keys in combination: "Shift, Command + 3". The image should then be saved to your desktop. You could then print this image. When printing select A4 paper and make sure that you select "Fit to page". I hope this helps? Thanks, Ralph
You sure can, it might be a bit tricky doing it in Adobe illustrator. The best way would be to create your instructions and patterns as two separate PDF documents and then combine them in Adobe Acrobat. Simply google "combining PDF files in Acrobat" for a breakdown of how to do this.
Hello! Great tutorial! I have created my own art board and followed your instructions. I’m ready to print! But, could you please tell me how you avoided the print margin problem? What do I need to do to make my art boards compatible like your are? Larger paper size? Boarder on each page? Thanks.

Tay Rez The A4 print template has been sized so that the “print margin” has already been included. Simply add your pattern to the template. Save it as a PDF and print it in full scale. Do not scale to fit when printing. Your pattern will print full scale as a multi-page PDF with the margins included. Hopefully this answers your question?
Thank you for posting this. The issue i am having now is that when I go to print the PDF pattern, it cuts off the sides of my pattern bc of the margins when printing. How do I avoid that from happening so the full pattern is printed?
It sounds like you either need to increase the printable area of your printer? Or possibly create a custom print template. We have a tutorial on how to do that here: ruclips.net/video/NB_g2_kKd38/видео.html

Like when I am putting together 2 pages, either the notches won't match or the lines won't. What could be the issue?
Hi Madhuban, It's possible that you are not printing to the correct scale. Make sure you deselect "scale to fit" or ensure you are printing the pattern at 100% scale. Also, make sure you are using the correct page template. A4 should be used for Uk printers. US-letter should be used for US printers. They are very different when it comes to paper size. Also make sure your printer borders are set to small or minimum. I hope this helps resolve your issue.
@@PatternLabLondon Thank you for answering my question! I created a border on each paper and when I go to print sometime the border does not show up, I have to draw in the border myself. Would you know why it's doing that? Thank you.
Hello, I am in the US, and we don't really use the A sizes of paper. I have a printer that prints 11x17 but nothing seems to be printing correctly, I tried it with CS6 A3 size, and when I print I have it scaled to 100%, What am I doing wrong?
Hi Alexandria. That is a real problem but luckily it can be solved quite easily by creating your very own custom print templates. Here is a tutorial to show you how: ruclips.net/video/NB_g2_kKd38/видео.html
You can create an artboard to any size you like. Simply ask your printer what the maximum paper size they print, then create an artboard with those dimensions. You can then place your pattern within that art board. Make sure you leave around 2cm border on the inside of the entire artboard to make sure your pattern is printed within the printers print area. Finally save it as a PDF and send that to the printers. Ask them to ensure they do not fit to page but print 100% scale. I hope that helps!
Heya, I just tried at home to print on A4 pages using your illustrator A4 template. But I kept getting borders on the printing. After trying to fix it on the printer and/or driver side, I realized your document artboards were setup to be at 17.98 cm width for 26.69 cm which was causing the issue (I was able to create my own artboards A4 size). I thought I'd let you know in case the issue lies on your side (but it could be a weird interference when opening up the illustrator file)
Hi Jules, thanks for your comment. We're currently working on a tutorial to demonstrate how to create your own artboards which should help people like yourself. Great work creating your own!

I'm really not sure why this is happening without more information. What version of Adobe Illustrator do you have and are you using our pre-made print templates or are you making your own?

I'm using the US letter of your multipage thingy and when I print, it doesn't work. It has a huge margin on the right side and a small margin around the whole sheet. Nothing is able to be lined up and taped together. What am I doing wrong?
Hi Josh, this is Rose. You mention that it has a "huge margin" did you print your pattern from Adobe Acrobat software? And did you select "Actual size?" I hope this helps.
Unfortunately, this is not something that we have tried before. You could always try and import DXF into Adobe Illustrator and then transfrom it into a multi-page PDF using this tutorial. Good luck!
The quickest way is to hit: Edit> Undo (CTRL Z on your keyboard) this will undo the last steps you performed. This will only work if you have literally just deleted the artboard/s. Hit File>Document Setup (CMD OPTION P on your keyboard) Then click "Edit Artboards" You can now redraw an artboard anywhere you like and any size you like. Just click and drag to create the artboard. Hit Enter on your keyboard when you're done.

Hi Madhuban,
It's possible that you are not printing to the correct scale.

Always either 100% or actual size. This is very important! If you print at any other scale, your pattern will be too small or too large.

This is all done in Adobe Illustrator. You can download it here: adobe.prf.hn/click/camref:1100lriMA/pubref:illustrator/ar:patternlab/destination:https%3A%2F%2Fwww.adobe.com%2Fproducts%2Fillustrator.html
Please provide link to PDF Print Templates. Can't find it on web. Thank you
Hi Keti, try this: patternlab.london/home/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/PRINT-TEMPLATE-PACK.zip
@@PatternLabLondon Thank you
You're welcome, Keti!
THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!
No problem!
@@EncoderFashion I'm not sure what I was doing wrong, but I learned how to correct the problem by creating my own system of how to do it.
Thank you Rose for helping Josh. I'm sorry I didn't answer this sooner. Your answer is spot on so thank you for sharing.
Hi Josh. How did you resolve the issue? Possibly your answer could help others. I'd love to know!
I make DXF , MDL ..... and many of other formats , and I want to know how to convert those to PDF , any help please ??? I use MODARIS & GERBER
Unfortunately, this is not something that we have tried before. You could always try and import DXF into Adobe Illustrator and then transfrom it into a multi-page PDF using this tutorial. Good luck!
Also how to add back the art boards that I deleted
The quickest way is to hit: Edit> Undo (CTRL Z on your keyboard) this will undo the last steps you performed. This will only work if you have literally just deleted the artboard/s.
Hit File>Document Setup (CMD OPTION P on your keyboard) Then click "Edit Artboards" You can now redraw an artboard anywhere you like and any size you like. Just click and drag to create the artboard. Hit Enter on your keyboard when you're done.
Fantastic video (as always!). But I can't find the download links anywhere. I've looked on your site and in the description box of this video, but there is nothing. Could you please re-upload the download links? Thank you for sharing so much!
Hi Cora... Sorry, this took a little while to answer. We've been very busy. I've now added the links to our full pattern making course hosted on the PatternLab website. You should now be able to find all of the tutorials, in order and with their respective downloads. Enjoy!
@@PatternLabLondon I checked the website and while other tutorials have the link to the Bodice PDF and Cutting Board there isn't any link for the Multi-Page Template pdf on the bottom of this tutorial. I was wondering where I could find it.
@@ruperv. Sorry for the missing content, I'm not sure why this wasn't added in the first place. The links to these important downloads can now be found on the original tutorial page and the description above. Enjoy!
i hope this will help u

Hello, i am from indonesia..
why i can't open cutting table file in Illustrator CS6? i repeat what i did, and it just keep didn't show anything
i hope u reply
Adhelia Melina we’ve had this question asked before and we’ve recently fixed the issue. It was saved as a adobe illustrator cc file which was not compatible with earlier versions of illustrator. We’ve now saved it as a CS2 file which should work with all versions. Navigate back to the tutorial page on out website to download the amended copy. Hope that helps!
What if you don't have a computer only a mobile phone? What then ?
cheryl serin unfortunately adobe illustrator isn’t available for mobile phones. Hopefully in the future. You could instead print your custom fitting PatternLab basics blocks in PDF format, print them on paper and then manually pattern cut using pattern master and pencil, whilst following the tutorial. The process is very similar.
cheryl serin you also can use iPad version of software
thanks
No problem!
I am looking to hire a digital pattern maker. Please inbox me if you are available.
Thanks for the comment! Unfortunately we currently don't work on bespoke or private projects. Good luck with your project.
Is there a fee to get illustrator?
Yes, it is a yearly subscription fee.
Encoder Fashion is correct. It's a yearly or monthly fee but well worth it if you work with digital patterns often.
