Listen to the podcast this is taken from, which is Roger Deakins' TeamDeakins, and your quest for specific brands of lighting will be shortened by a mile because Roger talks often about how he used practicals and natural light to light a lot of scenes (and still does at times). Utilizing off-the-shelf practicals is exactly how he worked in his early documentary days.
Get as strong as u can spot light. Everything else u achieve with diffusion or bounce. U need power to have enough of it go through diff. Thats all. Good luck.
