I went from an Alfa Remeo 147 2L T-spark, to the Twingo 0.9L turbo. It's 9.5secs 0-60, I don't notice a big turbo lag. I'm happy on the motorway to about 85mph, after that it feels a bit light. Great fun on country roads. On combined driving I'm getting just under 50 to the gallon, after that I totally agree with the review. I've had mine from new for 3yrs, 29,000 miles, I just don't want to swap it!
The RS version will be sick. Imagine this with sport suspension, recaro seats, wide low profile tires, 3 door version with shorter wheel base and slightly lower roofline, and a 150-160hp turbo engine.
I have been running one of these for a year & I love it. I have the 900cc 90bhp tce Dynamique. 50-60mpg around town, brilliant acceleration for a city car & great on the motorway. This car has a character too.
I have had the naturally aspirated engine version since February and absolutely love it. It has so much character, very practical for its tiny size, great fuel economy, and nippy around town! I'm also still getting used to all the admiring stares and questions from people wondering what I'm driving and asking if they can look inside!! This car deserves to sell a lot more!!
Defenitely my favourite car review channel. I hate some of those reviews which say so little about the car. Just performance figures and maybe how expensive it is. Detailed reviews are much more informative and much more entertaining!
Here in France just bought one of these wonderful cars. We' re in our eighties . It's not a family car . The rear seats are for the rare occasion you take someone home. I have a Honda sophisticated civic , love it.But I prefer my Twingo , and so does my wife !
i have one for one month because renault crashed my car on delivery, how shit i know. I dont agree with some of what Mat says. It is actually very quiet on the motorway, didn't notice any wind whistle and the engine does not drone. You forget its rear wheel drive because it feels just like a normal car! The turning circle is hilariously short, it amazes everyone who sees it. I agree it does bob over bumps but you don't really notice it. The 70BHP has similar performance to a 1.2 corsa or clio so its actually not that bad. I'm averaging 45MPG and I'm ragging it around. Just thought id point some things out :)
I think the person who questioned the Twingo's ability in snowy conditions has wrongly pre-judged it, while front engine / rear wheel drive is certainly challenging in such conditions, rear engine / rear wheel drive is a different beast altogether. I remember a neighbour in the 1980s with a Skoda Estelle who routinely trashed all of us with his ability to drive up our rather steep avenue.
Rear engine cars are all well and good but what happens if you've ice cream in your shopping? Will the engine heat the boot and melt all your frozen food?
Yup, I got a rear engine car (Toyota MR2) and the boot get hot quite rapidly so you have frozen food, it's best to put them on the rear seats. Or be very near of your house.
RE: aircon being a must, I completely agree but I have a few friends that just say "open the window it's the same thing".... err, no it's not. Bloody plebs. Hate being stuck in a sweat box car with no a/c.
A very helpful road test as I am testing the 0.9 TCe version in a couple of days time to possibly replace my Clio which has the same engine and goes like a rocket. A black Iconic version in my local dealer's showroom looks really tempting but it needs to be discounted before I'd buy it.
I think that's a great design because you can do a donut without costing too much . Plus , you can also cook a fish or some meat that you have just bought from the super market ,when you get home, your dinner is ready , lovely!
i almost thought the breed of Jeremy Clarkson styled auto journalists was dead. but along comes Mat. i come here and watch his reviews for the fun of it - I dont give a damn about Renault Twingo! But its so much fun to just watch his reviews! Great job Mat!
When I heard about rear engine, one thing has been bugging me. What happens to the front space? Shouldn't there be additional boot? Or maybe the spare wheel takes the whole space ? EDIT: Nevermind, watched the review till the end ^^
With the RWD/Rear engine layout it seems that Renault has missed an opportunity to exploit a unique selling proposition of creating a fun car to drive. At least it has an excellent turning circle. The bonnet area that Matt showed us @9:10 is disappointing. A 'mini boot/trunk' would have been a great idea like the old Skodas had.
Really great car for having driven it. And its consumption goes merelly unnoticed, after 3 hours in the city I didn't have the feeling the gauge moved even a fraction of an inch...
I really like this car, I had the last gen Rs Gordini not the face lift loved that car light in its feet great handling, this car is perfect for parking in town or tight car parks, you can turn the wheel a lot tighter because there's no engine in the front, lol people thought you'd have 2 boats where would the radiator go, with the app on your phone you can use your phone while driving they have thought of everything
Matty's Cars they still make it, the new twingo is just a facelift and not any different except some new features like CarPlay and a/c on the base model
It al looks well priced if you see the screeming prices in the brochures, but then you read the small letters and you find out it has as standard equipment... nothing at all :') You have to get the most expensive one really. and that makes this one not that cheap anymore...
My first thought is that your average mechanic won't be too happy with where this engine is placed. That's going to mean more money you pay for his aggravation. I know all these online features sound good in theory. But I can't help but feel this will cause many accidents, because it can get distracting. 33 mpg isn't bad, but I expect more from a smaller car. I did feel yellow was a nice color for it. It's like a big bumblebee. (I mean that in a good way.)
+anthony hodgson Thanks for this, I put a refundable deposit on a new one of these and hearing about the mpg was putting me off. Reading around the internet and this comment has put my mind at ease, I'm gonna get it!!!!!
+anthony hodgson Yeah, some reviewers are commenting that the engine in the boot makes it impractical. Not for me anyway, there is more space in the boot with the seats up than my 04 Grand Vitara 3dr.....so..... Thanks for your helpful comment.
Picked mine up this week! I absolutely love it!!! After driving it a few days now, I think the reviewers are a little harsh on it, it has a lot of character!!!
This reminds me of the Hillman Imp which was rear wheel drive and did have a boot at the front. But in Renault history they did make rear wheel drive cars s this Twingo is nothing new.
+Marco Finger i would take ugly car than a rusty Fiat 500, with terrible build quality and no rustproofing at all. I can drive this Twingo on a saltlake cold weather with no problems, try this with the bad Fiat 500.
first car which I still own is a 2015 Smart Forfour, which is basically the same car minus some appearance differences. It crashes about, it's dismally anaemic, quite frankly dangerous trying to merge onto motorways, not to mention its dodgy handling in adverse weather conditions with absolutely no weight over the front wheels to help with stability. The start/stop system is comically spluttery, the headlights you cant hold a candle to a zippo lighter, and its really roly-poly around corners. However parking is just so hilariously easy and it costs you less than a sandwich these days to keep it running with fuel being not a problem at all, and the insurance group on mine is 2. Id probably recommend it if you live in a fairly built up area rather than out in the sticks like me as its clearly more home weaving about a high street than a freeway but even so, its left-field without being absurd. I'm likely gonna "upgrade" to something more substantial in about a year's time that has a little bit more boot space and "road grab". Twingo/Forfour will just get you where you're going and for that despite its shortcomings with it being completely bonkers layout-wise I'm extremely thankful for it giving me my first shot into driving.
I drive an 88 ranger with the nofrills 2.3 four cylinder SOHC....I thrash that engine just to get to work and back. Its quite funny when I leave a stop light with my foot to the floor and the dude next to me is keeping up just acclerating normally.
Does anyone what type fluid the clutch slave cylinder uses? I have a 2010 renault twingo auto-manual transmission and my clutch slave cylinder fluid is low
Nice looking wee car, but less than 40mpg is fairly horrific for a city car with a 1.0 three cylinder engine. The Toyota Aygo/Yaris with their 1.0 three cylinder engine option can achieve 50+mpg even when driven with a bit of occasional vigour.
So basically, the Twingo is a slap in the face to all the RWD-only trolls. FWD is what made the original Mini great, and it's no wonder why everyone else uses it. I can't imagine how terrible this thing must be in snowy conditions with it having a short wheelbase AND RWD. Shame, since it's a really good looking car and well packaged...
Rwd cars are normally bad in the snow because their is no weight over the rear wheels so this car could prove just as good as any fwd car in the snow. Also the lack of power will mean it won't have tendency to oversteer like many other rwd cars.
Short wheelbase makes it very agile and easy to handle. Specially with the ability to angle your wheels in a wide degree. (Driftiiiiiiiing, like a boss)
TurboDifferent It's like you literally did NOT listen to the review at all. Clearly described the chassis as being less sporty than many FWD models and the car's incredible INABILITY to drift. For pete's sake, the car has 70-90 HP....
AdrianC12345 It needs to be a cheap car. What do you expect? It's a brand new (old) concept which nobody used in the past 15 years or so. and they took a big gamble with it. They surely saved money on the setup of the car, or they made it as easy as possible to drive. I'm pretty sure that with some suspension tweaks and damper settings you can make this car a brilliant driving machine! In fact, In 2 weeks I'm going for a test drive at my local Renault dealer.
TurboDifferent A concept nobody used during the last 15 years? What about Smart?? They use the short car+rear engine-layout since the early 90's. I tested one once and i didn't like it's handling at all...
Rear engine cars litter history with blandness and mistakes, like Chevrolet Corvair; Simca 1000; Škoda 130; NSU Prinz; Renault 4CV; BMW 600 (some others have been posted about in other comments). The 911 is also famous for some wayward handling in the past. A point to note is when using your phone as an app manager one could be technically breaking the law as you are not allowed to use your mobile phone whilst driving. The law does not say it prohibits only making phone calls. The phone also hides the radio buttons on the dash...why?
not a parcel for a cat? it could be :) IMPORTANT NOTICE: carbuyer is not serious enough with its road testing. driving the car around just isn't good enough. official figures for acceleration are not right - few sources showed it goes LONG 16,5 seconds to 62 mph. it would be great if it could do 14,5 , but it couldn't.
I hate this coupe like thing in city cars - they try so hard to look good , so stop being practical . First Twingo was huge on inside , first Panda also great car , even Yugo with spare wheel in engine bay was clever . My ideal city car - 3.5m long , 1.5m wide , sub 1.0l engine with FOUR cylinders , with place for 5 ADULT people . Japanese kei cars should be bit wider and imported in Europe .
It's a long wheel base Mercedes Benz Smart car isn't it? Everyone who loves cars knows that a Mercedes Benz under 100K is inferior in every way, and a Mercedes over 100K is a depreciation lovers dream. There is a boring Japanese manufacturer who refuses to produce half baked cars just to cash in, oh what's their name?
This guy is top at reviewing cars, never thought i'd be entertained by or even tempted to buy a twingo
All hail Twingo!
Mat Watson, he’s great...now he presents Carwow which has really gained in popularity because of him. How times have changed...
I wanted to buy the twingo but after this review, ended up buying the 911.
