Such a nice video Nigel. It really recalls some good memories - especially from the blind. That morning was magic. I'm so happy the birds decided to come and I really like your photos. Looking so much forward to part II - that was a really exciting and cozy morning👍 by the way the 3D camouflage really suits you 😉😂
Great to hear you talk about your work Morten. That last part where you were saying it's important for your gear to become a part of you is so important, too. I still remember the first time trying to aim a 500mm lens and get a bird in focus; I couldn't hit my target for shit! But once it becomes second nature and your camera is an extension of your arm, you can really focus on the wildlife.
You both seemed to hit it off really well. I'm kinda trying to go the other way some, trying landscape more often. You both give me some nice inspiration. I think I like the term 'Nature Photographer'.
Two of my favourite photographers who I have followed for some time and admired their work. I hope I ever get an oppertunity to spend some time with them discussing or shooting some landlcape/wildlife together. So happy to see you together discussing. It made my day.
Morten is fast becoming one of my favourite RUclips content creators. Glad you caught up with him, your footage is outstanding in this video I must admit 👍
A great idea for a new series Nigel - it’s always nice to have new experiences. And nice to see the jays too - I love photographing them. Such intelligent and beautiful birds. Well done.
Morton & Nigel collaborations. It really doesn’t get any better than this. Fantastic tips, thank you. I’ve been dissuading myself from looking at feedback from social media posts as I often find that there’s a “trend” that people have, rather than providing an organic opinion. Freeing myself from that, I find, helps free up my creativity.
It doesn't get much better, sitting around a camp fire with coffee and talking with friends about something you both love doing. Morten describing the day waking up is very much how I feel when sitting out in nature waiting for a new day too begin. It happens every day and it is still a magical moment when the sun starts too peak up from below the horizon. Thanks for sharing, Nigel.
Mr. Hilmer described the morning feeling perfectly. As the sun comes up and lights the area it burns off the magic. I knew and felt exactly that; as if I was in the woods at that very moment. It's great to see you branch out. Thank you for video!
You both are very similar in how you create. It maybe frustrating to others but when a photographer struggles to explain how to take a great photograph that's exactly the reason why he is an awesome photographer. Creating a piece of art is beyond explanation. 🙏
Brilliant! I’ve fallen behind on my “Nigel Sundays”, so I’m really happy I came back to this video. It’s amazing to see two great photographers who are so passionate about their craft!
The excitement in the blind is palpable, really captured the joy of photography. The look on your face when you get the shot sums it up. Excellent video, the fireside conversation was so inspiring. Two great photographers sharing their passion, gotta love it 😁
Enjoyed the interview. Your emotion and joy was palpable when you got your first photo in the blind. Spoke volumes. It showed up in the final picture; joy.
Listening to you guys converse is insightful to you thought process in taking photos and why we all do what we do as hobbyists or professionals. I believe it helps me as photographer better express myself in words why photography is such an important part of my life. At 72, in fact today is my birthday, I hope to be out taking images for many years to come. Being outside taking photos in the heat or cold, day or night, with or without my dog is something that brings so much joy to my life. It's magical and therapeutic to my being.
Really enjoyed this. 2 of the best photography channels on RUclips chatting about their passion and sharing loads of good tips etc. Thanks for making! Very inspiring.
Great video of what the photograph means to the photographer who took the image. It’s not about how perfect the image is, but of the recalling the feeling of being there when taking the image. I have friends that go on holidays and only buy postcards and don’t take their own photos. Their reasoning - the postcards are much better images than anything they can take, but to me, my photos may not be that perfect, but when I look at them, I can still recall the story behind the image. The time leading up to taking the image, the effort needed to get it, the excitement of capturing the image - it brings back the feeling of being there again, recalling an event in ones life, being part of the adventure that created the image. Thanks Morten, thanks Nigel. 👍 Derek. Sydney. Looking forward to the next episode.
This really resonates with me. I love wildlife photography but I’d like to get more skills in creating better compositions so it’s not just about showing a rare (or common) bird or mammal but presenting it in its natural environment and in a light that evokes emotions. Love the photos of the jay. Great comments from Morton Hilmar. Look forward to checking out his channel and to the second part of your wildlife series.
I so enjoyed this video Nigel. Thank you for making it. For me it highlighted the value of the emotional connection between the photographer and the subject, whatever that subject happens to be, and how that in turn promotes an emotional response from the viewer. It also highlighted the value of trying something different, which offers a chance to apply existing skills, but also to learn new skills which push us photographically and broaden our skills. Also that sense of being at one with your camera is so important. It made me think of the times when I used to rock climb and on a good day you could flow up a piece of rock because you are at one with it. So too when you set out to make a photograph - if you are at one with your camera and your subject, it is hard not to make a good photograph.
How wonderful was that, thanks Nigel. If you certainly chose a great & humble guy to learn from. It's been great watching you both trade tips & ideas in your vlogs, poised for pt2.
Excellent stuff Nigel. Loved the informal and frank discussion. I of course am a big fan of Morten, and hugely inspired by him. Good to see you both collaborating.
I have been enjoying your videos, and you inspire me to get out and try to find photographs and not just a snapshot. I think your "tries" will give me many more inspirations and a few tips along the way. Keep up the great work and content.
What a great idea and a fabulous video Nigel, love that you took the time to have two camera angles. I did think for one moment....woah what has Pebbles been up to :) (2:48) Looking forward to part II and to see what other episodes will be in the Landscape Photographer Tries series.... Jeff
Yessss!!! Been watching both of you for about a year now. This is awesome!! I shoot mainly product photos but wildlife is my hobby with the occasional landscape when it can’t be passed up
To me, the raven photo triggered my curiosity. At first I saw, as you said Nigel, a shadow. Then my mind turned it into actual raven. After that, my mind started picturing what the rest of the raven could look like, taking into account the weather. The wind ruffling the feathers, what posture the rest of the bird has and so on. Then the questions, why is it sitting there? Is there food on the ground? Is it scouting for something? What is it looking at? My mind only needs a little hint in the form of a silhouette, and my imagination is free to build a whole world around it, with even sounds and smells. That's what happens in my mind when I look at photos that leave a lot to the imagination. Really good video, Nigel and Morten! Thanks
I really enjoy your videos Nigel. Well edited, engaging and perfectly shot. You have a pleasant broadcasting voice, and mesmerising eyes. Have a great Christmas, and all the best for 2020
Awesome series idea?!?! Can't wait to learn from all the different types of photographers and what inspires them to master their craft!!!... =) #thank #you
Really great idea for a new series Nigel. I love watching watching two photographers talking and sharing about their photography it opens your mind and gives me more inspiration. Your wildlife photos are amazing, just like Mortens.
Oh man, what a dream! So glad you had an amazing visit to Denmark. It's such an incredible country and far too often overlooked. Loved the pure zeal in the blind going for the shot and those fireside chats are brilliant. Really looking forward to the rest of the series.
Hey Nigel and Morten - what a great time you had! You were talking about a Robin (bird) however, I did not spot one at the video? However I saw the Eurasian Jay (brownish and multiple colours) and Eurasian Magpie (black-white) commonly called just Magpie - two lovely nice birds. Keep coming your "tries" series Nigel!
Hi Nigel! I am a landscape and wildlife photographer from Florence (Italy). On youtube I follow both you and Morten. Thank you for the passion, the emotions, the advices and the commitment that you both share in your videos and in your photos. By following your work, I was able to grow as a photographer and pass this on to my clients. Please continue with this series of videos with other great photographers. Best wishes to you and Morten.
Very interesting video, Nigel. It's nice to see you in a domain somehow totally different than landscape, and finally seeing there's actually lot of similarities.
To follow your dialogue is a pleasure. I wish I were there or another place near the campfire. It would be fun if Thomas Heaton suddenly appear and sit down to listen and add some comments, but he is more individualist as I can judge according to his blog. Or Adam Gibbs, etc.
Hey Nigel! You got some great images! I really like videos like this... Funny... I felt as if I was right there with you and Morten! I love doing blind photography as well and just walking about. I have been shooting still photos for about 12 years and just got into video. All great fun! Looking forward to part 2! Saying hey.... Greg
The description of the sun Burning the magic away is soo acurate. But I find that theres a short moment where the morning wettnes and the low sun creat an Incredible mood ; )
Superb shots Nigel. Good point at the end. I have walked away from loads of photos exactly because its been done a million times before...now I won’t! (If I am inspired by the scene!)
How hard was it for a story teller/ talker to remain quiet as a mouse? Love the fact that you are experimenting in other genre's, it just shows a natural progression and growth in the channel. Well done!!
I think the pull for wildlife photography is the excitement of something quickly changing and you catching that moment. Things are slower in landscapes generally. Also worth noting is the ability to get some good shots with the camera you’ve got...
WOW - this is one of the best videos I've ever seen about photography. And it's quite interesting: In my video from yesterday I also talked about the emotions as the most important element - the base element for photography. I come from a family of artists and this is maybe why I see photography (all genres) much more as an art than a science. So I find it really interesting and right, that Morten always came back to his emotional aspects. And I also find, it's a fantastic idea to try other genres from time to time - it expands the horizon. By the way: Really great results, Nigel ;)
This was a fantastic video really good to see you doing something out of your comfort zone something we should all do. And loved the quote “ the only person that should love the image is the photographer” again sometimes we all get caught up in worrying what others think yes it’s great of someone else loves it but if you love it that’s all that matters. Personally would love to see more of these vlogs. Again fantastic
Love this! For me, nature photography is about trying to capture some of the character of the subject, that's what lifts them from just portraits into something better.

A tip for focus with the Z cameras and wildlife. Sometimes the wildlife is hard to get into focus with the Z cameras but I found if you get close with AF-ON, hold AF-ON and turn the focus ring it will show you what's in focus. The camera will usually snap **close** when AF-ON is pressed so this is nice to just make sure you really nail the focus. Also helpful when wildlife is behind things such as grass and the AF has a hard time grabbing the subject.

Can’t wait to watch the whole series. Excellent thoughts capturing the emotion not just the picture. Tell the story so others connect.
Surprisingly Nigel!for bird photography..waiting for the sequel of this video. Hilmer and you is my idol..thanks !

Wow thats Amazing Video. The Photograph you taken is Looking so Beautiful and Story telling.
Waiting to Watch your next Video.
Those are really beautiful photos you came away with. I'm feeling inspired to get out and do some photography. Looking forward to EP2.

morten is truly gentleman ❤️
You guys got some beautiful shots! Not sure I'd have the patience for it ;)
ha ha - Thanks Mads
Fabulous!
Outstanding!
Great video. I look forward to more of these. Well done.
Yessss!!! Been watching both of you for about a year now. This is awesome!!
I shoot mainly product photos but wildlife is my hobby with the occasional landscape when it can’t be passed up
Thanks for sharing this, Nigel. And thanks for introducing me to @Morten Hilmer as well!
Great video two of my favourite RUclips channels together thanks guys
Did somebody say astrophotographer? 😉 Brilliant insightful vid as usual, so genuine and passionate
;)
How about Alyn, Morten and Nigel doing a video together? All you need is somewhere with clear skies, wildlife and scenery.
Brilliant video Nigel, the sheer amount of enthusiasm from you both is infectious!

Nigel, this new series is a great idea. And start with the great Morten just fantastic. Bravo!
Oh man, what a dream! So glad you had an amazing visit to Denmark. It's such an incredible country and far too often overlooked. Loved the pure zeal in the blind going for the shot and those fireside chats are brilliant. Really looking forward to the rest of the series.
Wow ! Morten and Nigel in same video, I can't believe this. Both are my favorite. Unfortunately RUclips doesn't allow me to give more than one Like (:
wow that's Amazing video ..thank you both of you
Wonderful, really enjoyed that. Thank you.
Grrrrrreat conversations!! and stunning pictures 👍
Fabulous
Great video Nigel and really just reiterates the sense of journey and adventure that most of get from photography 👌
Big fan of you both. So nice to see you collaborate! Great fun.

Great video ! certainly different . (in a good way) . Very inspirational .
Super cool idea, Nigel. Really excited about this series.
It's the crossover event of the year! Really great.
Very interesting video, Nigel. It's nice to see you in a domain somehow totally different than landscape, and finally seeing there's actually lot of similarities.

Nigel be very, very careful or you'll be hooked! Lol. Loved the video, Morten's is one of my go to channels.
Very nice concept. Looking forward to seeing more
I loved that
Beautiful birdies, beautiful photos! Love them😍
Superb shots Nigel. Good point at the end. I have walked away from loads of photos exactly because its been done a million times before...now I won’t! (If I am inspired by the scene!)
Never do that. For you it is the first.
How hard was it for a story teller/ talker to remain quiet as a mouse? Love the fact that you are experimenting in other genre's, it just shows a natural progression and growth in the channel. Well done!!
This is awesome! Been a fan of your page for a few years now, and I just found mortens page a couple weeks ago. My two favs already coming together.
I think the pull for wildlife photography is the excitement of something quickly changing and you catching that moment. Things are slower in landscapes generally. Also worth noting is the ability to get some good shots with the camera you’ve got...

Super.
Love this! For me, nature photography is about trying to capture some of the character of the subject, that's what lifts them from just portraits into something better.
I love a good campfire 🔥 and that was a good one! 👍
wow Nigel allot of them shots were awesome, i think the trick to good nature photography is to be in Mortens blind.
I’m a beginner wildlife photographer so this was so fun to watch - you got some really great shots!
Watching this at work on my break. Great video Nigel! :)
In my landscape creative rut this year, I tinkered with birds/wildlife photography & now I'm completely obsessed. I swear, it has also helped me with my landscape photography, to see things differently.
Such a treat to have Morten be your "teacher". I too had 2 awesome well-known mentors (here in Hawai'i, for our endemic native birds) to help me with my bird images & learn their behaviors, their habitats, etc. Helps that learning curve haha!
Start a podcast! That seems super good to me👍🏼 great video!
This is going to be a great series.
Sitting by a fire with a cup of coffee and my dogs before the sun is up. This was such a pleasure to watch. Relaxing and informative. Well done!
Thanks so much... it was enjoyable to make
I think Morten's shot of the raven should be titled, "Birdzilla in the Mist".
I have little interest in wildlife photography but love to see really good wildlife photos. I loved the reason that Morton gave about why wildlife appealed to him whereas landscape photography was not in his purview. A great video that shows the difference in perspectives of different individuals. I think this is a great "expansion" effort.
Nice video!! I was wondering one thing while watching though.. How did you know the birds were going to land exactly there and not elsewhere?
We didn't - just a case of waiting and hoping... We were in the blind for about 5 hours.
@@NigelDanson Wow, nice that it worked out!!
Great discussion. Morten is a great outdoorsman who captures some great images in nature. His videos bubble over with his enthusiasm for the spontaneity of nature photography. Looking forward to the next video and anxious to see what Morten captures in the Amazon and the Galapagos as he travels with @BrendanVanSon over the next couple of weeks. Rock on!
Thank you so much. What an incredible compliment.
I really enjoyed the video, very inspirational. Photography, from the photographer's perspective and the person viewing the pictures, is so much about emotion and feeling rather than technique. I live on the southern tip of Africa in a semi desert region called the Karoo and we have no lions and elephants but are spoilt for choice with smaller and often ignored smaller creatures. After seeing your video I'm definitely inspired to get out there with my camera on a much more regular basis.
Great collab guys! Brill video!
A tip for focus with the Z cameras and wildlife. Sometimes the wildlife is hard to get into focus with the Z cameras but I found if you get close with AF-ON, hold AF-ON and turn the focus ring it will show you what's in focus.
