Regular Car Reviews: 2000 Toyota Celica GTS

- This is the 7th generation, so it runs on the T230 platform with the Front-engine, Front-wheel-drive layout, using an engine similar to the one that powered the MR2 Spyder, which adds a certain poetry, since this ended up dying the same year as the MR2: In July 2004, poor sales forced Toyota to announce that the Celica and the MR2 would be discontinued in North America at the end of the 2005 model year. Of course, I'm not entirely sure its death is necessarily the fault of the car itself, so much as the economy surrounding it.
Toyota Celica: the official car of the Scotty Kilmer channel.
Not the S because of the Yamaha engine i
And his celica is the previous model
the Yamaha engine is kinda crap tbh.
Dude I love Scotty
@@Meowblivion why
Lets take a moment to remember the cars that spawned from the celica.
Toyota Supra
Toyota MR2
Toyota Camry
Toyota Prius...
Which made them the most richest/boring company to date.
-I know the GT86 exist but I don't wanna talk about that car.-
@@NoNo-df5tl I know, I just saying Toyota have fallen from the top to make some of the most boring ass cars to date. But I do agree, Some of the new cars that Toyota make are fine like the new Corolla Hatchback and the GT86... Maybe I am bios.
Jawan Meizu Toyota hasn’t fallen from the top, what are you talking about ? Their cars sell very well. They are just selling to a market that cares about reliability and good gas mileage. That doesn’t make them boring, they just aren’t pandering to your specific tastes. If you want fake vents and hood scoops maybe try Honda ?
@@GupyRambo For me at least. I see Toyota today as a feminist SJW cars because that all I see is the damn prius's on the road and they act like there the best just because they have "Better" gas mileage and saving the economy. A 95' Civic hatchback have better gas mileage then most of the Prius life span.
Also you can just remove or replace the fake vents/hood scoops, I sure don't like them.
@@NoNo-df5tl my friend's 2010 prius got 40 mpg in the mountains at 80mph the fuck you talking about
"If you ask the GTS to bang like a Lotus, it'll nut too soon and will call you mommy by accident"
Grade A comedy.
Revolt Wolf Funny, yes. But I'm pretty sure the GTS got the same engine as the Lotus with some minor tuning differences and a slightly higher horsepower rating.
Yeah Toyota comissioned Yamaha to design the 2ZZ-GE so im not sure what RCR was talking about.
Celica GT-S automatic only had 4 gears, which made the 2zz completely gutless. Even at full throttle, you'd need an airport runway just to even get to lift.
Now I'm wondering how it would perform with a lotus engine swap
Revolt Wolf LOL
The hood scoop actually does have a purpose! It leads to the back near the firewall, where the exhaust manifold sits, and cools that area down. Pretty neat huh? I thought it was just for looks, but it is functional design!
And now it helps feed air to my Garrett turbo.
Lotus Elise is the younger hot sister while the Celica is older sister with character. It is clear which everyone wants, but what do you want?
can the Lotus be the older hot one... with character. because if not then im still single x'D

I knew a guy that tried really hard and loved this car. He bought one as soon as it came out and was so proud of it. The next month after purchasing this car, he got a crazy girl prego, some where in the following 9 months he traded his GTS for a dodge caravan. The End
Poor Guy :(
You're that guy, right?
Thankfully no, but I do know a lot guys that had to sell their S2000's or Acura Integra's after marriage and get the MiniVan. I would say that a better alternative was a Wagon like the Volvo V70R.
AverageInvestor Why can't a 4-door sedan like a BMW 3-series be a good family car in the USA? Are you that fat? #LoL
i plan to buy my son a really nice first car, then rent a dodge caravan for a week and make him drive that. #birthcontroldoneright
This man needs toreview the Aztek. That should automatically shoot their value up by $5K. To roughly $5k.
simpsonfan13 a mechanic buddy said aztek was his last favorite car to work on because you "always" had to take the entire dash apart.
The pontiak Aztek was the first mass sold hatchback/crossover. Ugly car. But it was in breaking bad. all of breaking bad's cars stink. Chrysler 300, Toyota Tercel, Chrsler New Yorker, toyota Yaris. And that yellow crap the Lawyer drove. Yeah just ugly older beat up cars. That show had a crap budget. Great show.
I got good news for you mate
simpsonfan13
hahaaaa. poor azteks, maybe if their wheels were larger theyd've looked cooler. like the chev volt or something. meanwhile as they are, it's like looking at a monster truck when it's got those little wheels on so it can be transported to the next arena.
@@phuckhugh2698 I'll have you know the Toyota Tercel is one of the most durable pieces of machinery every made mine used to go off roading with the big trucks it did soo well I had to put a snorkel on it thing took more beatings than any of the 20 other cars I've owned and it didn't seem to care one bit about any of it.
Been driving a 2000 gts for last 5 years just hit 250,000. still runs smooth with no engine noises and it still has lift. Love that car can’t beat 2 weeks on 12

The 2zz engine in the lotus, celica, vibe, corolla are all the same YAMAHA. The only difference is ecu tuning and intake manifold and fuel rail setups for the supercharged lotus. Lotus may have upgraded the oil pump gearing and camshafts as these are known components to negate midrange performance or durability.
didn't do camshaft or oil pump. but they did do valve springs to ensure no float for sustained high rpm
The oil pump problem, etc were corrected in the later engines.
Thank you I was surprised he got that one wrong..

how did Toyota go from this to being the most boring, vapid car company in the world?
Unfortunately, boring sells. Cars like the Yaris and Prius sell much better than the poor Celica. They're so comitted to boring cars in North America, they sell the GT86 under their Scion brand here. It sucks but it makes economic sense. BTW, nice user name. I miss Pontiac. I should wrench on my Fiero project a little before winter sets in.
Not anymore, since they killed off the Scion brand. The new FR-S/BRZ will be called the Toyota 86.
Oh really, I had no idea. I haven't been keeping up as much as I'd like lately.

The reaction to the automatic transmission is exactly the reaction I have when I spy an automatic in pretty much any sports car.

From what I know, the Celica 2ZZ and the Elise 2ZZ are identical, at least internally. Same head, same block. The difference in power comes from a different ECU and different tune. Toyota and Yamaha have a historical relationship spanning a few engines, like the 4A-GE 20 valve. The Celica 2ZZ has that Yamaha designed head.
Also, I'm surprised you didn't make a VTEC joke! The 2ZZ has variable valve timing and lift, only Toyota engine to get it!
Your spot on 👍
Exactly. The lotus also had a supercharged version but literally same engine
I have an 03 gt 5 speed as a doordash mobile and love it so much. It’s the epitome of “slow car fast” and sips gas like a boss. It’s still legitimately fun to drive after driving it non stop as a job for 3+ years. Reliable as fuck, too.
Girls love it, too.
6:39 Oh men i miss my old golden retriever, he was 16yo when passed away and even in his last days he wanted to play with tennis balls all day.
Come on, it's about time someone lends him a Juke to review
Hell yeah!
Nissan Cube
Would that be too new to be considered a Regular Car?
SpecialKLSX he did review the 2014 Fiesta ST
Grman Rodriguez I recall that all too well. I called that review out as well.
Not only was it "brand new", it was also a trim level that made the car *fun*.
just bought a white 2000 6 speed GTS In mint condition with 55.067 miles, all optional extras...the 6 speed makes this car.
you're real lucky its hard to find one in manual where i live I took the automatic
I found one at a police auction and it runs like a dream exactly
I have one in 6 speed and I have to agree. It's a blast to drive in the mountains near my house. The suspension actually let's you chuck it into corners pretty aggressively. And the high red-line makes up for its moderate horse power because you can just keep your foot in it for so long...
@snapdragon64k-47 Orbital GTS is 2zz-ge powerd so no oil burning issue like in 1zz-fe. Those lift bolts though on earlier ones....
@snapdragon64k-47 Orbital Yup you have to be careful about lift bolts on pre face lift 2z powered cars though as they can snap easily (redesigned for face lift). You can still rev the hell out of it just lift isnt there.
I love the celica to death. Owned one, wrecked it, getting another one this week. However this video is absolutely hilarious lol
u get it?
+marcus Alan nah, salvage title and my insurance company won't insure it. Still looking though. GTS' are hard to find with under 120k miles
+Daniel gilbert yes, I was looking for a 6th gen, but couldn't find one in manual
+marcus Alan use craigslist and look through your surrounding states. You'll find way more options. And filter your search results to just manual.
+Daniel gilbert I just end up getting a mk3 Vw golf gti 2.0
This car mocks all who drive it. It just keeps whispering in your ear, "I could've been a Supra...".
Supra came out of Celica not other way around. Also shut up cuz all Celica's prior to 77th gen exist, Rally versions and GT-fours, so stfu. I take celica over Supra(tho i would like to have Supra separately just ot preserve good one in stock form so dumb shitty kids cant waste it for ricing purposes)
I got mine because not only could I not make the price leap to the Supra (a decent example is crazy in the states), but also every dude bro within a 10 mile radius that had seen Fast and Furious would probably annoy me. Also it does mock me but it's usually "Imagine if I were RWD."
Umm... You could say that about every car ever that isn't top of the line. This isn't Gran Turismo. 10k is a lot of money, not to mention other expenses.
I've had 8 celica and the rear wheel ones are great. the 6 speed gts is an amazingly underrated sports car, and the 6th gen gt was honestly one of the best cars I've ever owmed
Vehicles that came out of Japan between 1991-2000
Toyota Supra
Toyota MR2
Toyota Celica All-Trac Turbo
Honda/Acura NSX
Honda s2000
Honda/Acura Integra Type R
Mitsubishi 3000GT vr4
Nissan 240sx/Silvia
Nissan Skyline GTR R32? R33 and R34
Mazda RX7
And Many More, that being said, I'm going to assume it was American Economists who called 91-00 the "Lost Decade" in japan. (I'm not gonna bother going into 01-10)
Big difference between when a car was developed and when it was released
Yes, the R32 was made during the 90's. They ended production of it in 1994. Also, don't forget about all of the Evo's that never made it over here. The Evo 1 through Evo 6 were produced in the 90's. I don't know if this counts, but Mitsubishi had a large part in making DSM what it is/was. They had the 1G and 2G Eclipse.
Ichigo0Soul All Eclipses were built in the USA. The engines (except the 420a) were all built in Japan and shipped to the US. So the Eclipse is considered more an American car, rather than a Japanese one.
Japan was on a bubble economy that popped in the 90s (early 90s IIRC). No amount of "weeabo pride" can deny that it happened..
SquallyZ06 lol they are like the supra came out then there was never a massive historic economic disaster.....uhh yes yes there was...
I got one of these a month ago! front struts were bouncing all over the place, it has the SAME BUMPER, and the CV axle was non existent but I love this car a LOT. it DOES still want to have fun even with the engine too lean. Its design is AMAZING and I really appreciate it. im not letting this car go until I can't afford to fix it.
"like fat guys in a long distance relationship. It just doesn't work out in the long run." I felt that hahahaha
Damn bro you wanna talk?
Hahahahaha... this is me with every LDR I've ever had.
I've been trying to marry myself into some decent country... well, it never worked out as of yet. I need to lose weight and get together with someone not from that same stuck-at-home crowd. I need to gain financial freedom and wait for Rona to be over, so I could physically visit them at the first opportunity and marry them.
I have the '97 and he nailed it on the head. This sweet baby tries its heart out and it's a god damn blast when it does. It's not too powerful but it'll try real hard to rip up a tight curvy backroad like no other and I think that's beautiful.
This car is actually the slowest of the 7th gen. Should've reviewed the 6 speed.

No mention of the fantastic "Looks fast" ad campaign?
1:50 The 2ZZGE anywhere aroud the world but America HAD the Yamaha head and that means more power (192bhp) and higher redline (8200 and 8400 for JDM models). Cool engine, might burn some oil, but when maintained properly, it's really good fun.
3:30 This is a partial reason. Kids didn't want to be seen in douchy coupes, young people suddenly realized SUV's were "cooler", that's why the sales of cheap sport cars dropped and sales of cheap small SUV's rocketed to the sky. There were loads of coupes or roadsters, pretty much every car maker had one in 90's/early 00's, but by the end of 00's I can think of 2, maybe 3: Scion tC, MX5, RX8. I really wanted the GT86/FRS/BRZ to success because I want small coupes back, especially RWD ones and if the GT86 was a flop, that would mean the concept of a small sport car was dead. That's why I think it deserves all the hype it got.
I have this engine, can confirm, fun.
The 2zzge in america also had the yamaha head. all 2zz-ge's are the same with the exceptions of tuning, wiring, and the angle of the throttle body.
jmurockstar
Oh, good to know then. What's the reason for lower redline?
***** ECU. The Elise used a Lotus-made ECU with a higher redline.
tomelliott9 I have this car can confirm fun.
If you love someone you NEVER buy them a Pontiac Sunfire.
Yep! Basically Pontiac’s version of the Chevy Cavalier.
The hood scoop is actually functional, just not in the traditional sense. On the GT-S is has a little air duct attached to the firewall. The exhaust gets really hot on lift so it's there to carry heat away from the exhaust and under the car.
Mr. Regular, you are a good writer. Your description of the GT-S made me feel a a little bit of what I felt for Seymour in Fururama. I almost want to buy one just to give it a good home.
The Forgotten Car!
And it was a damn good car too.
Now its redesigned and rebadged as the scion TC.
I believe you mean the Toyota 86, which was the Scion FRS, not the TC. Maybe you should not comment.
+jalderink I just never understand why can't people not be condescending pieces of shit like you? Just correct the person without sounding like your shit don't stink. It's an easy comparison to make. Small FWD 4 cylinder vehicle between the two. One ended production in 2006(Japan) and the other started at the same time. Same manufacturer. How can you not see that's an easy mistake to make? Why is everyone such a rude piece of shit here?
You say not to be rude, yet you call me a condescending p.o.s? 1+1= you are ?
What I said is a stroll through the park compared to your vulgarity. There is something to be said for your comment but until you practice what you preach, "Angel", maybe YOU should not comment, either.
+jalderik I called you condescending after the fact. I'm clearly stating fact that you were condescending. Even you can't deny that. Me calling you condescending is just pointing out factual information. I'm not being mean to you, I'm just placing a mirror in your face.
It'd be sweet if they brought back the Celica with RWD aimed at the Camaro SS, Mustang GT, etc.
Braulio R. At that point might as well call it a supra
Or at least put a v6 in the 86.
Or AWD, aim it at the WRX crowd.
Honestly, I'd like to see a return of the Celica GT-4 myself.

The hood scoop is funtional. But not in the way you would think. It uses the ram air to cool the exhaust manifold to reduce the overall temperature when driving in harsh conditions
This was one of my most wanted cars in my high school/early college years. It was one of the main ones I was looking at after my first car (typical old 100,000+ car; was a '96 sebring). I always loved how these things looked. I was hoping to get this, or an eclipse. I wound up settling on an '09 eclipse when I found one that was barely used, but dang, I still wouldn't mind driving this car someday either. I love the body of this car. It looks cute yet powerful at the same time. I wonder if there are many after market parts to upgrade a car like this.
The 2ZZ-GE is the same between the Celica GT-S and the Lotus. The 2ZZ is basically the 1ZZ with a head redesigned by Yamaha. Lotus bought them from Toyota just like that. The couple horsepower difference is from a different ECU and a slightly higher rev limit.
the 2ZZ has "lift" as well, whicht he 1zz does not. It's basically VTEC.
PeePee2000 VVTL-i just kicked in yo?
The 2ZZ has also a bigger bore and a shorter stroke. Because the 1ZZ and 2ZZ are so identical, you can put the long stroking 1ZZ crank in a 2ZZ and have a 1.9 2ZZ.
FD36 If you want to get technical, it also has less tendency to burn oil than the 1zz, due to different pistons/rings. I put a 2ZZ-GE in my MR2 after the cat disintegrated and ruined my 1zz.
The differences between the two engines was subtle, you coooouulld use an ECU from an Elise if you rewired it and had the money to buy it, but even the Matrix 1zz ECU doesnt "clip right in" to the Celica 1zz wiring harness. So trying to make the shit work in that way is rediculous while for the price you can buy a Megasquirt plug and play, get the car tuned and that fucker will feel like an Elise.
The best Toyotas were the MR2, Supra, and Celica.

I love your channel, your videos are hilarious. But I disagree with this review. First problem is it is automatic. that is not giving this car a fair chance at all since the 2zz was made to mate up with the short gear ratio 6 speed manual. Also yes this is THE SAME MOTOR AS THE LOTUS. The Yamaha head you are talking about came on every 2zz-ge engine. How would I know, well since all the engines came stamped with "Yamaha" that was kind of the dead give away.
Very old comment but yeah I'm pretty sure all GE/GTE designated engines have Yamaha designed heads. The FE designated ones are the economy designed heads which are toyota designed.

I've got an 04 Celica T Sport in England. It's a great car. Very cheap to buy, cheap to insure, cheap to run. I can fit people up to approx 5ft 9" in the back. The boot is big enough for a full weekly shop. It's acceleration is just fine for a daily driver. Handling is also very good for a FWD with no LSD. It is more than possible to shift at the redline of 8200 rpm and maintain lift in the next gear. Gearbox is great. The gears practically shift themselves lol. Overall, it's a great car.
I remember back in like 2010 when my dad got one of these in black and we went to my primary school, and there was like 5 kids running and pointing at the car xD
Didnt read all the comments but hopefully it was mentioned before... The celica doesnt have a lotus engine... Actually the lotus has a celica engine. All 2zz's were created equal! Celica gts, matrix and corolla xrs, lotus, runx, etc. = Same engine! Same yamaha heads on ALL of them. In the lotus It was only rated with higher hp because of a different intake design and a different ecu... Valve lift would actually kick in on a way lower rpm than the toyotas depending on how hard you press the gas pedal. Toyotas had it at a 6000-7200rpm starting point depending on the year and model all the way up to 8250-8300ish. I had a matrix xrs it was moded and tuned. It was actually tuned by redliner9k... Famous toyota 2zz tuner in PR, first one to do a lot of things with the 2zz
dasspr sorry but no Yamaha head engines are only on Japanese and European celicas. its why we got 192 hp.
manual for $1800 in better condition than this, can you blame me? is there any faults? not for that price.
What a deal, was it in good shape at least?
Beyond the financial crisis, Japanese sports cars got to be crazy expensive in the late 90's. Also the SUV craze happened. Minivans and station wagons were far more practical, but SUVs portrayed a much more outdoorsy macho image even if they hardly went off road.
I came close to buying a used GTS or RX8 back in 2002, but got a 97 Prelude SH manual instead. I'm still daily driving and hooning the thing to this day and it's still running fine with original factory parts. It's kinda like the Celica in that it's a very reliable, honest and entertaining, hard working sport coupe that simply isn't as famous as it's more expensive siblings.
I have a white 2000 GT-S 6 speed manual transmission with 217,000 miles absolutely immaculate. No rust, no dents, wrecks and no issues. It has been taken care of mechanically and of course armor all, lots of armor all. I look forward to another 18 years out of it. Maybe it will be considered a classic like a fine 69 mustang.
yeeeeeaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh probably won't.
That Pontiac sunfire what a hideous car. Still see a ton of those and cavaliers on the road, like cockroaches.
Joseph Donnelly The celica looks way worse by comparison, and doesnt really offer anything more than a Sunfire can. Id say the little Pontiac did pretty good on its own to hold the market share. And besides, there is a reason you cant kill them. The 2.4 cars may have an issue here or there, but they are fast, light, and balanced, and stupid reliable. Id take one of those over any toyota of the 90s, any day.
LRulesTheWorld you're on crack, the sunfire is horribly unreliable. I don't know anyone who had one for a full year before it started gong to shit.
Joseph Donnelly I know someone who drives a Sunfire. He says it's basically a prius. I'll agree. Ugly on the outside, cheap looking on the inside. Still not terrible. It runs, he drives it.
LRuletheWorld shut the fuck up. Celica's from 90s and 80s were and are amazing 5th and 6th gen especially in GT Four version are great with perf and handling aswelll. Mid trim ones still have decent perf and great handling and are really fun to drive and are great for daily usage cuz of how practical Celica is in comparison to hordes of other shittier 2+2 cars including GM ones. Go and detox yourself of whatever you smoked boi
@@LrulestheworldM8you have to be kidding, the Celica out-handles the Sunfire so bad that it calls the GT-S « daddy ».
Remember that this is the end-of-line nerfed-for-emissions horrible automatic Celica GTS...
The UK/EU version is so much better... 6 speed manual transmission, cam changeover at 6200RPM, redline at 8200RPM, and 190HP. :P
I'm pretty sure there isn't even an Auto option for that car in UK/EU, for good reason. Its a stupid car to put an automatic gearbox onto...
well, you got the T-sport. and the GT (which is americas version of the GT-S) or just the base model celica. and yes, theres an auto. and america does have a 6-speed option. and depending on the other years the red line goes to 8400. but not the 2000 celica.
the na version is the same except its at 180hp due to emissions i believe.
not everyone drives automatics in the US
US GT = UK VVTi
US GT-S = UK T-Sport
UK GT = T-Sport with TRD body kit, Eibach springs and leather/alcantara interior.
Various US market Toyota had ECU/mapping changes to meet emissions regulations. Some have different rev limits, some have higher cam change points, some have less power. A few are the same spec as an EU car though.
And I didn't say that all of them were auto, I was just pointing out that this one was, so for that reason (combined with the fact that this one has a nerfed engine) is a reason to not pay much attention to this video... :)
I had a UK GT (192HP) which was fantasic, combined with a lightweight flywheel, LSD, stage 1 clutch, custom intake, TRD gearing, and gearbox spring/linkage/shifter mods, it was a pleasure to drive, and even more of a pleasure to thrash ruthlessly!
These days I have a '98 MX5 (Miata) 1.8iS though, which I am restoring. The Celica went not because it broke, but because muggins here (me) broke it!
good for you. you have money to mindlessly spend
Both the Lotus and Toyota engines were 2ZZ-GE and both were co-developed by Yamaha. They are the same engine! Same block, same head, same variable valve timing and lift. The Elise made like 9hp more than the GTS and 16ish hp more than the XRS because of little technical differences (emissions) but they're still completely identical engines.
yep...same motor
+Wesley Reed Same motor, in the EU. The USA got the slightly detuned 180BHP version. We got the 190BHP one that sat in the Elise (post K-Series).
***** We did get the Yamaha derivative though. I know that for a fact because my Dad owned one 2006 EU model.
+EnlightenedAce except for the fact that the celica is front wheel drive and looks like crap in comparison
+First Gear actually the gas quality and requirements are the same, the rating systems are just different....both the US an EU 2zzz put down identical hp to the wheels
I drive a 2003 Toyota Celica GT. He is my trooper, it has seen so much. Through California, to Texas, Florida, and now home in Texas. That tiny red car has over 260,000 miles on it and runs like a champ. I replaced the hydraulic lifters to the truck. Bought it a new set of lights (not just the bulbs but headlights) a new bumper, and its amazing. Sure, it has its kinks but its got a character that cannot be rivaled by other vehicles. I love my celica. And those who say otherwise can stick to their vehicles.
Bought my 2000 Xelica gts brand new. Still have it today! 17yrs and going strong! Never a major issue!
I have a 2001 Celica, and I won't lie it is one of the best cars I have even driven.
More fun than a 2011 Mustang GT and more fun than my moms 2014 Camaro SS.
There is something to be said about a slow car that feels fast, has me wanting to buy a 2015 GT86
I almost cried because of this video. I hope these assholes feel good about themselves, sitting in a Prius and talking about nature and comfort
Simon Dobrev Lmfao
....but I like comfort.
This review was too good that it made almost made me want to get one
The biggest selling point on this car by far is it's super light curb weight! It's only 24XXlbs!! That's just madness in that era. A 2 dr Integra weighed 27XX lbs FFS!
I like the Celica. My family had the 2nd generation hatchback growing up. Thanks for the vids. I enjoy them. It takes my mind off the crap of life, Makes me smile and remember all the cars I have driven and enjoyed,
We pronounce it 'cell-ee-ka' in Australia.
Ah yes, the improper pronunciation.
I believe the Scion Tc took over for the Toyota Celica. think about it. what does "TC" stand for? Toyota Celica
tC stands for Touring Coupe ... not Toyota Celica
The Scion TC Is the Celicas Fat little brother.
The only reason it was called the tC was because Volvo already had the XC name for their lifted wagons.
The tC is a Camry. It’s not anything else except a Camry hatch.
Camry sedans are built in Kentucky
Camry hatches were built in Japan
Technically yes it replaced the celica but as someone who had a 2nd gen tC: it was a Camry hatch
I thought the GTS only came in a stick shift. Guess not! Man I still love this car!
Damn you make great videos about cars n feelings
I am the owner of a 2003 Toyota Corolla Fielder wagon. It is a JDM model with the 2ZZGE engine, and 4-speed automatic transmission that goes into 4-speed manual mode. The JDM version of the 2ZZ is rated at 190HP. All the 2ZZ engines have Yamaha heads. (Since the advent of the S2000, Yamaha has had tremendous input in Toyota's high performance engines up to the Lexus LFA.)
This is the best Japanese vehicle I ever owned. It is doing 220,000kms and runs up easily to 190kms/hr where the limiter cuts in. In the video, it was never mentioned that the engine carries VVT with Lift also. At the time this engine came out, it was the most powerful 1.8L engine out there. Compression ratio was 11.5:1. The engine fitted in the Lotus Elise had a supercharger installed. Really, the automatic and manual give two different driving experiences. The engine begs to be revved ! Trinidad & Tobago.
i love celicas i always have since need for speed underground & i love lamborghini's & i always loved how the front end kinda looks like a lambo with the like slope in front i always thought it was the closest u could get to a lambo in a comercial car & i been looking to get a Celica
bought a celica as my first car (in the uk). absolutely love the damn thing
the engine in the lotus is actually the same... the gts head is also yamaha. same exact shit
You're golden retriever analogy got me right in the feels.
you have the best analogies in the world hands down
Welp, waited for this review and I find out it's an auto and he's misleading some people with the whole 2ZZ deal. Will this be revisited?
A crowned prince (looks down sees automatic) "ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh" exacly how i feal with every car ever.
This was a cool little car back then, almost got a 2001 but I couldn't fit comfortably in it at 6ft 3". So I ended up getting a Tacoma instead. My brother got a 6 speed and it was pretty fun, the sound of the high lift cams.
+Nicolas R I had the same experience I went to try it out and barley fit in the passenger seat no room.
I'm 6' 3 and 2003gts is fine.
9/11 did bush That's crazy, is it your daily?
Nuno Pereira ya only car I got.
+9/11 did bush it's not a bad car at all, pretty cool car just kinda small for a person of your hight. Get a K&N intake, aftermarket exhaust and some grippy tires and it will come to life.
When I was a little kid, I had a ton of Hot Wheels cars, and my favourite car, the one I always took out to play with first, was a 2001 Toyota Celica with a nice matte black-top/matte metallic blue bottom paint job, orange windows, lights, and wheel "spokes" and a ridiculous spoiler at the back, but it was mine and I loved it. In fact, that little toy car is the reason why I got into cars in the first place, so I guess I have to thank the Celica for introducing me to car culture. Now, all I need to do is find that old Hot Wheels model...
Loved your commentary..... seriously fresh and witty!
You should remake this with my celica! 2000 GT-S 6 Speed!
Dat front bumper . . :D :D :D
More like :[
Gavin Navarro Lmao.
Stefen*
Y'know what's fucking strange. The 2zz was also in the Matrix XRS/Pontiac Vibe GT, which lies somewhere between a bloated """hot""" hatch and a small crossover. I've got the non GT Vibe and driving the thing I honestly can't fathom what kind of car it is and for who it was made.
I personally love my Vibe.
Oh yeah me too. Great little car, reliable, good on fuel.
I think it must've been in the XB bracket of "we want to market to the kids! cheap, reliable, with a sporty look"
+Tekwerk Exactly my thoughts. It still works wonders though. I'll be moving into my dorm this August and it'll work wonders for hauling.
Oh yeah, flip the seats down and the thing's like a panel van inside. You can sleep in it, easy.
+Tekwerk Is it just me or is there an odd amount of space under the hood? It feels so spacious for a little 4 cyl
Dad got the 140hp version, manual, and its fun, for a FWD. i mean, i have never had this much fun driving a FWD like with this car. It is a good car indeed!
The 2ZZ in the celica is indeed the same as the one in the elise. They were both made by yamaha and in the corola xrs and the elise there was also a supercharged variant
My dad bought one of these in 2000.... I don't know why he did
+Ali Sakran possibly, but he was an electrician so I'm pretty sure he lost a bet of some sorts because he didn't have it for long
jordant0085 he bought is because 2000 toyotas were literally the most reliable cars, according to statistics
7:01 you can see him wearing the gopro on his head in the rearview mirror. haha
lol that's not him that's the guy who's car it is
***** Nope, owner is a female. Look closely ;)
David F. ok?
It's a great looking car. I think it's aged really well and I didn't like it when it came out!
How tf do you make the connections and references you do. It’s truly outstanding and entertaining and shit
Good Video. Keep Up. Those Things You Said About The Celica Are True and Not Many Understand It. You Earned a Sub
2:03
This nearly killed me, I laughed so hard I fell off my chair.
My favorite car for a reason
Wow, you watch regularcars?
Falbere ♥~ Of course. I don't get half the shit he says, but the videos are cool and funny. He deserves my time.
Bobber WCC Haha... The Subaru Impreza one and the Honda S2000 one is just too hilarious. Especially the part where god hand from Initial D anime appeared out of nowhere xD
Falbere ♥~ Well these are pretty damn informative too. I watch it both for the comedy and the info.
you have a shit taste in cars
Nope. Nope. Nope.
Toyota had long ago said a big fuck you to the US market, refusing to bring to 90s GT-Fours to North America, basically giving away the sports car market away with a bow and a blow job. And as Subaru, Honda, and Mazda are showing them the full depth of their folly, Toyota releases this final kiss-off to seal the deal, having to wait until the release of the FR-S, which is what the follow up Celica should have been in the first place, to realize that there is money to made in selling cheap driver's cars.
And apparently Nissan is due to learn the same lesson with the cancellation of the IDx.
A STI, S2000, Miata, and Celica GTS should be parked in the front lobby of Toyota North America as a daily reminder of what underestimating the US market brings you.
We had alltracs though, still turbo awd.
SpodermanPlz only til 1994 then we got the shaft on the st205
shane eichacker
Unfortunately its because of poor sales, in 93 in all of the US toyota sold 82 all tracs.
shane eichacker
The joys of living in Canada, you get to import them:p.
TheZigZagg your right it was 93. i still would love an all trac tho
Alrighty, just to put a couple things out just in case.
Base Celica and MR2 Spyder shared engines-- the 1ZZ-FED (though some were "just" an FE... how that works I don't know, but you can look and see which you have if you have a Celica GT). That D makes a difference between just a Corolla engine and the Celica/MRS engine, with things like lighter rods for an extra 10hp or so and a higher redline. The MR2 Spyder didn't get this engine from the factory, but as seen in comments it's a common swap (a home-built Elise if you will).
The 2ZZ-GE is a totally different animal aside from the block, sharing displacement but little else. As owners have been saying elsewhere in comments, they can last if maintained (can't speak from experience, but wouldn't doubt it). I've definitely heard about the Elise ECU being different-- it seems to be done often with that engine. A number of Corolla XRS owners tend to swap their ECU's out for Matrix and Celica ECU's so they can extract more power, since the lift drop-off is even worse in the Corolla's, which were attempting more torque, but didn't gain enough torque to make up for the lost horses.
Not only is it a good swap into the MR2, but it's also been found in a few Echo and Yaris bodies, as well, though it's tight in the former. Yaris, Scion xA/xB allow a bit more room under the hood.
Actually, there's one Celica trim above the GT-S, but we never got it here in the states. It's called the GT-Four and it was on the 6th gen T200 chassis.
