In this video, I'm playing the Epiphone Les Paul Special II. If you've ever been curious about Les Pauls, this guitar is an excellent, affordable introduction. Thanks for watching.
Don Carr
I find myself playing this one more than my other more expensive guitars. In fact, I play this on stage more than my other guitars as well lol.
I know what you mean = it is a very comfortable guitar to play with it's satin finish all over the guitar !
do you recomend this one to play on stage? or do you prefer a Squier affinity? ( i am going to buy my first electric guitar) :)
This epi its better, or choose the squier classic vibe series
Bep _99 Epiphone. I’ve owned both
True, bloody hell, thats a great endorsement! Thank you sir.
Every electric guitar review should include an absolutely clean setting on the amp.
I bought one of these several years ago and love it! I find myself picking it up way more than my Gibson Studio or my Ovation. Definitely less worried about dropping it too!
What he was playing in the beginning reminds me of the solo at the end of We Will Rock You
Definitely see the resemblance
I wanna hear it through a cheap amp.
trust me, sounds good
I played it through a Roland micro cube and a hot rod deluxe and it is just ridiculously good for that price. After a good setup, that guitar sounds awesome...
I have 10w ibanez amp and clean sounds awesome, distortion is good for that price
Shannon Dosher It's actually a nice sound, the amp isn't doing all the work in this case, I bought one of these a while back
Some of my favorite tones came from cheap practice amps.
This is the guitar I've had for a years! I don't wanna buy another one because this one is so easy to play and I still have a lot to learn.
You’ve got the best sound out of that guitar out of all the RUclips videos I’ve seen. Bought one today. They are beautiful and sound great.
Not going to lie, I still have mine and love the sound it every time
I bought one of these from musicians friend back in 1999. It is a very good guitar. I used it as my primary guitar for the duration of my band's short-lived life (2000 - 2004). I've never had any major issues out it. It took a lot of abuse from me. It still has the original pickups in it. I've gotten more guitars over the years (epiphone) and this one is hands down the least problematic and best sounding out of them all.
That's good to know, because I just bought one for my first guitar!
Have to add my voice to a couple other posters who expressed they would like to hear the guitar without effects. Doesn't have to be long because I know most will want to play with efx but it sure would be nice to hear the instrument played clean.
The only way to compare tone from guitar to guitar is to set the amp at CLEAN. Add gain and or distortion and they all sound the same. If I was wanting to buy an amp, I would want to hear that. Not when I am wanting to buy a guitar.
I love Sweetwater. I just bought this sweet guitar. Beats my other LP. And the other is also sweet and from Sweetwater.
I'm not sure what the II model is like, but I owned the I model for years. Gigged, recorded, took it on the road with me, incredibly reliable. I even had .13 strings on it, and it never let me down. Don't think I even needed to set it up, as the store setup was fine. I've owned plenty of guitars in my time, some cheap, some expensive, but the most reliable, consistent and hard-wearing instruments I've owned have been my 90s Epiphone Special and my 2008 Squier Affinity Strat. There's something about a simple, bolt-on that does the trick.
Had mine about 20 years. It is excellent. Got it instead of an SG. And im glad.
This is a really great guitar, i have one. I just had to change tuners and the nut to a graphtech one. :) The neck is not as thick as a Classic Les Paul, feels similar to a Gibson Junior.
i do have this guitar too and it sounds great and the neck is smooth and easy to handle.
I have this guitar, 100% recommend it! Great guitar!!
What is your opinion of the body ergonomy for the user ?
Is 90$? a good deal?
Can you get it with picks and an amp?
@@josephtapia4384 Yes. In the Players Pack. Just bought one last month. Also comes with a 10 watt amp, strap, and a gig bag. All for around $260.00
I fall in love with this guitar in the same moment I saw one!
I like how people in the comments are criticizing this guitar because its not a high dollar Gibson or Ibanez.
It’s a great guitar at a great price. I paid only $249.00 for the package and love it. Most folks that put it down to me does it for no good reason. I have hundreds of reviews before buying mine and the vast majority of them gives it high praise. Both pros and newbies agree!
I picked one up used for 40 bucks and made it my slide rig. Love it. It made the team. I will be gigging with it.
Just goes to show that if you are a good player you can make anything sound good!
Just bought this after selling my ibanez rg8 (big jump huh?) and it’s great. I only got 140, so I decided to spend it on this cause it was in my budget and I wanted a new 6 string. Don’t be scared by the low price tag tho, it holds tune very well and it feels and sounds great.
My first guitar and i don't regret picking it
Just bought one! Can't wait until it gets to the store so I can pick it up
I've been playing for 40 years, acoustic elec, and have picked up an Ibanez grx 80 for the last year, I'm a rock & blues chic, and consider an accomplished guitarist, I know my way around one anyway, lol. I'm looking at buying a LP Special II, or a Cort ( looks the same as this one ) I had an Epiphone Dot (335s) for a few months but sold that as it wasn't what I was looking for in the end. I love Humbuckers, and the set up on this looks good. I have small fingers, and like a small action on the neck. Would this suit me? or should I step up a bit...
I have bought... an ephipone red special 2 and a affinaty Strat squier, my reflection on them is... they never let me down. Play it though a fender champion 100 an you get a cool sound.
Yes, I've used both of the guitar models that you mentioned. They are both decent guitars. They are practicle, and economical.
I have this guitar. It's my first guitar so I have nothing to compare it to. No complaints. But watching and listening to comparison videos tells me there is a huge difference between this model and even a few hundred $ upgrade. This is my son's fault. He wanted a guitar, I picked his up, fell in love with it and within 2 days was buying my own. I have been learning from RUclips videos. It's so fun and very addictive! I'm on line constantly pricing more and more guitar stuff! I think smoking crack would have been a cheaper hobby. 😆🤣😂
I have 3 of these guitars bought them in pawn shops..I love all of them....
Just be prepared to pay about $200 for better pickups. It'll be good after that.
Recently, I was given an all black one for free. I cleaned it up, put an EMG 81/85 combo in it. I had to put all new hardware on it. It sounds lovely now. It looks a little dull, so I'm thinking about repainting it to fit me a little better. Otherwise, it sounds wonderful. It just looks a little dull to me personally.
Very helpful man. Can't wait to get mine.
I have one of these and paired it with a Fender Champion 20. Sounds good
It would be a lot more helpful they didn't play with all that crappy fuzz and distortion, so someone could actually hear what the guitar sounds like.
Joel Brothers, it's because the pickups suck.
pickups are a pretty simple change, very useful to get a sound you want.
@@cameronwilson5329 incorrect I have the same guitar and it plays fine before jumping to conclusions inform urself 😎
cheap, or expensive... name me one sane person who even bothers to play a clean tone on a neck pickup of a Les Paul; a guitar known for its status amongst rockstars. you must be delusional.
@@ChrisLeeRhodes the pick ups are fine I have the guitar
i change my pickups to burst bucker and it sounded closer to gibson really nice
I’m a young guitarist and only have a Strat… and i love it. But im thinking I might go for this just to see what else is out there
I have this guitar and Fender frontman 15G amplifier and it sounds fantastic!!!
Same combo man
Very nice demo. All my guitars have a p-90 in the neck and a Burstbucker II or III in the bridge. I wish I new the price of the es339 rather than modifying guitars. The epiphone p-90 sounded much nicer than I expected which of course could be helped with a great amp and a pedal. I am sure the player would have let us know if it were out of the middle.
My first electric guitar.
If you're a good guitarist it's gonna sound good anyway. It's a good beginners guitar. Way better than what I began with years ago.
As how? A good beginner guitar!! I thought it met for professional!
i have an epiphone les paul special 2 LE and on its headstock its written les paul model as if in epiphone standards i've just bought it and just wanted to confirm that is it fake or real From Lucknow India
Throw it in the fireplace, now!
Bro i am from delhi, and got the same with special model written. Its legit dont worry. :)
Rohan Mahendru thanks bro are u sure?
I guess so bro. I got it for 17K and in heritage cherry colour. With special model on it. You may see it on my instagram account: rohanmahendru7 :)
Dude it is real.I have got the same one and it is real...I got it for the guitar center
I really really want to buy an Epiphone do any Epiphone owners highly recommend this special II for 1st time buyers?
great playing. great video.
Maybe the best cheap guitar on the market. Can do almost anything with this, and always sounds good. Though rock, hard rock, and blues are best.
I find mine doesn't really does well with hammer ons and tapping. When i hammer a note, it doesn't sound really loud and therefore isnt powerfull enough to really be heard properly. Even when i hammer on quite hard. Anyone else has this experience?
Don C it is possible your girlish ladyfingers are sabotaging your hammer ons
This guitar is enorm good... cheap and a real rock guitar.
Playing it now since 2012... 4 years ago i buyed an fender Champion 100, together vs the 2 effect channel and effect + boss bluesdriver and boss tuner my sound is great and bunchy. Compination of this and a stratocaster squier im very sadisfied.
The only thing i miss is a tele.
Than the gear would be perfect.😂👍
As long as your amp sounds good, a guitar as cheap as this will sound good. Also your hands of course. 🤙🏻
would it be easy to convert this into a Les Paul junior style guitar?
Jack O'Meara Yes. Just take out the neck pick up and put a jr pick guard on it. Plays and sounds very similar. Great guitars for the price.
sweetwater have their own concert hall now ? weekly concerts ? calendar ? concert tix prices pls...
Which is better??...epi lespaul special ii/jackson js22 monarch/cort z42/ltd ec10
How heavy is it with all that mahogany? Looking something for my 10 year old.
These are thinner than a standard Les Paul so they're pretty light. Typically in the 7-8 lbs range which is pretty typical for a solid body electric guitar. They're designed to be beginner guitars so Epiphone tries to keep them at a very manageable weight.

is the neck of that guitar comfortable to play even in small hand players?
yes
According to the spec.sheet, it has a D-shaped neck, not a C. Which makes it thinner than a C neck.
Please turn off the distortion, so that we can actually hear the tone, and sustain characteristics of the guitar.
Yes perfectly said
This was my first electric guitar
Would this fit inside of a standard Epiphone Les Paul case, or would I have to get a larger case?
Hello, Walkuro! Indeed it will. This guitar is a standard Les Paul body shape and will fit in any case designed for a Les Paul.
Thanks for the interest!

@@sweetwater Thank you for the reply, Cody! I'll be getting a job over the summer, and I've been looking into the Epiphone Les Paul Special II as a second electric guitar for me.
what amp are you running the guitar through?
Anthony Cahoon, it's a Fender Blues Junior III, check it out here:

Thanks! Don Carr
+SweetwaterSound hey so I wanted to order this guitar. I want it just like in the video here. I hate the small travel size one with no bridge
Hey A. TAWFIK! Give us a quick call at (800) 222-4700. One of our sales engineers will be happy to help you!
+SweetwaterSound the thing is I live in egypt and my mother is in the u.s shes the one that will bring the guitar from the u.s to egypt. I dont know if im able to call that number cause im in cairo
Hey A. TAWIFK! Send us an email at sales@sweetwater.com and we'll be able to set something up for you! Thanks!
was he playing ziggy stardust at the end?
Can you tell me a little about the neck, is it C or D shaped? And do you feel that it is a fast neck? Thanks
Thanks for your inquiry, Jon! Hope you're well and safe.
Most players who want a "fast" neck move toward a neck that's thinner in depth, which the Epiphone Les Paul is not. The contour is more of a C shape, but not exactly the same as a Fender profile.

@@sweetwater Thanks Robert, I realized that I have several guitars with fast necks, and I am beginning to think that perhaps I will try this style of neck and see if I like it, I certainly like the tones and the controls on this guitar, I feel that for the price I am getting a real deal, thanks again for your help.
Hey Robert, I have a question about one of my guitars and I am hoping you can help me. the guitar is an Ibanez solid body N427 I bought in 2010, and I have been trying to find out what was used to make the body and the neck. the neck is fitted. I would appreciate any help you might be able to give , thanks,
@@jongoodman4622 Hi Jon - If it's a single cutaway body, my guess is some variant of mahogany with a maple veneer. Hard to say without examining it. Hope that helps. Thanks!

@@sweetwater Yes thanks I really appreciate your help. thanks again.
I have one of these, plays fine except I have a completely dead fret on the G string at the 8th fret. I have no idea what the deal is.
It happens to some guitars, any brand any type, no body knows why, but it happen!!
@@ups350 i have the same problem...how to fix it?
@@misterdim02 There is no fix, get another guitar.

this sounds like it would compliment my music man quite well
what...special 2 dont come with a bridge.....how did you get one????
MrPopo40 You can learn about our inventory of Special II's at our site here: www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/ENJRVSCH
A tuneomatic
Special I no bridge, Special II does have a bridge.
What is the guitar lenght?
How about compare this one to the Epiphone Les Paul Studio
Should I get this or Squire Strat affinity hss? I don't know which one to pick.
+Disco Goddess I'm late but, it really depends on the tone you're after. If you strictly play artists that only use humbuckers than get this, anything else, get the HSS Strat for the versatility.
should i buy this one or the epiphone Slash AFD les paul? would be grateful if somebody could help me on that
+Tyler L. This one.
+Tyler L. Skip on Epiphone Les Paul's altogether and opt for a Epi 335 or 339. You'll actually get use out of those.
*****
A good option, but not for someone looking to spend 150-200$ for a guitar.
+Jeriah Israel on amazon its about 200$
This has a less bright sound than the Slash AFD. The Slash AFD has ceramic pickups compared to alnicos on this one.
Should I buy a used one from guitar center for a first guitar
You can't find a better guitar for the price.
what effect are you using please ?
What is the demo he is palying?
It's not the arrow, it's the Indian.
Merry Christmas to me
just wanna ask, les paul special ii or fender bullet strat? which one is better for a beginner? pls, someone who knows or experienced a lot about guitar answer this
The epiphone les paul special II is a lot better than the bullet. The bullet is known for being the worst strat by squier. but that's what I usually hear when reading the comments.
emm.can les paul special ii do jazz? im completely a beginner
+m/ az I'm sure it can but this guitar is made for the more "gain" sound. for example it's mostly for the rock genre. as you can hear it's a deep sound. rather than thin and treble.
+m/ az I would look for the Squier Affinity Hss Strat. it's way better than the bullet and is also very good with jazz as it has this clean crisp sound. it's also very affordable. slightly more than the bullet but definitely worth it. the tuners are way better and smoother too. you should check it out. ☺
Disco Goddess but everything here so expensive now, 230$ x rm 4.23 = almost rm 1k. well im from malaysia. and rm 1 to usd is 0.24 cent. not affordable anymore
What's the weight of this ax?
How long would it take to be able to play like that without lessons?
7 months for me
have you played before?
i have for 2 years but i only learned simple stuff and how to read notes etc
+redfools maybe a year
The moment you touch it
How much does this guitar cost?
Guitar Center $249.00 for the package which includes everything you need to get started.
whats the first song hes playin?
Mine does NOT sound like this at all.
I have the exact one.
Very cool. Just bought one of these used from a friend. Added some 0.9 Fender Strings and I am loving the sound of it. Check it on my channel.
Ooh they are made out of mahogany now and not plywood.
yeh its awesome, you just take out the pickups, the bridge and the nut, throw this garbage into the trash and buy a prs se.
lol
Les Paul with a Fender Amp. Lmao
What's so funny? Les played his through Fender amps.
Happens all the time
it is ok for beginner?? :)
It is your best choice for a beginners guitar.
Either this or a Squier.
does anyone know what size strings are equipped with this?
I don't know what they come stock with, but I use .010 on mine, and it works quite well. These guitars are a good deal. If you're going to do a lot of bending of strings (something I do very little of, as I play jazz) you might want .009 set on it. I'm sure that they'll work with most standard gauges that people use. The cool part about this guitar is that it has a screwed on neck (no, they are not bolts, they are wood screws), so Luthiers can get action really low, if you like. Luthiers have more leeway with a screwed on neck, and I've been told that they can actually get the action lower than set neck models (shims, etc.)
I have same one. Just need strings and a amp
mine doesnt sound like this even after it was tuned correctly
you know what a distortion pedal is right?
es la mejor
Hay una que tiene un tono más amarillo que esta, sigue siendo el mismo modelo vintage?
I'm confused...it seems to have zero sustain...? That can't be. 🤔
Where are the clean tones?
these sweetwater vids seem to be about "how can we disguise the sound of this one?"
It's actually good sounding, I have a cheap amp and it still sounds good
Lesson here that can be applied loosely to electrics is spend your money on the amp!! Even a cheapy guitar sounds great through an amp that's three times the price of the guitar.
amp?
Venom Shinjin kustom
I don't think Sweetwater wanted (7 years ago, lol) this review to show any positives about this guitar - I think they wanted this guitar to fail;made it sound horrible.
Or, is this guitar truly that horrible! Leave your comments down below (lol)
It's Akoume wood
What more do you guys need to know about an economical guitar.Go buy a Les Paul then.
can i buy from bangladesh???
I had this as my first guitar and whenever I went high on the frets it would sound like a scream. I even tried other amps and it sucked
Stewie Griffin ever thought that maybe... you just suck at guitar
Scap attack
That’s rude
Pawn shop $80.... heal yeah
would you recommend this epi lp over this guitar right here?
www.guitarcenter.com/Squier/Bullet-HH-Stratocaster-Electric-Guitar-with-Tremolo-2-Color-Sunburst-1341239925138.gc
It's a toss. Both are nice starters or beater guitars. I would go with what looks coolest to you. I personally have 3 Strats. An esquire, a laguna and a giannini. The laguna being my favorite since it's a custom.
hell yes
A $200 guitar as heard through a $600 amp
Those pickups sound like horse crap
They are.
no mids or bottom.. my friend owned one and i hated it... the pickups suck a dogs rusty ship pipe. now.. buy one and put 2 good pickups in it and you're rollin.... my friend had an epiphone explorer and put gibson explorer pickups in it and it brought the guitar to life... this thing has no back bone to it.. the les paul special ii I mean.. les paul special II sounnds dead
Not mine . If I put some TV Jones pickups on it it would put a Gibson LP to shame . Even a set of Filter trons would wake it up . A lot of people spent good money on their LP's and their value will always go up but you could have bought a lot of good guitars for what you paid for your LP.
Dumbest comment here.
that is a awful guitar!! that's why the reviewer has to hide the clean sounds by using the overdrive
No it is not, I have played it and it's is pretty legit.
