PF was a creation or sub-product of 20 years of socialism/communism's political parties in Brasil. His books never should be take as serious. Full of biased politics, Marxism methods and hate for free economic markets. He teaches future teachers how to fragment society by showing to children they are the oppressed. Everyone else, even parents, teachers, other economic levels than poor are the "oppressors". He sympathize with Russia, China, Castro and defend the genocides like Che Guevara when he killed "traitors" from the revolution. This is the real P.Freire. @@davel7159 You are right. Our educational system still have to learn and improve as the society and life changes. One thing I know for sure: politics has to stay out of any level of school. At the universities, politics should have politics science with ALL views, all systems as well, history, science etc. In a way that new generations would know where they come from, how the things are at other countries and systems and so on. You know Dave, the 3 things Marx thought in order to have "all control". Fragment society (all these "new" rights, anti-patriotic movements and creation of small "different" groups), Arts and Education (Here is their nest. During the hunt of communists, we let they stay with schools, arts, movements where the rebel cause would flourish), through this channel, they are destroying the family cell, the values and traditions (history, ways where we used to live). Finally the media. And I don't have to extend myself because you probably know, more than me the "roll" of media today. And what is funny is that the spectrum of communism, Marx, conventions of Frankfurt National Assembly (May 1848-June 1849) its like a virus which adapts very well to our minds. since them these ideas that we need to turn against our governments still alive. Fact is, they use that against adversaries (usually right hand, conservative (family, traditions, etc), using the constitution and its freedoms to practice censorship, and gradually, burry down freedoms and achievements which came with great costs (wars, civil rights, democracy).

I attempted to teach my students how to think critically. Unfortunately, most students in my class were not introduced to critical thinking. They often felt uncomfortable thinking for themselves and often asked for the “right answers.” That used to break my heart because they were not empowered to think for themselves, and it was alright to make mistakes until they developed critical thinking skills.
I can recall one class where my students were enthusiastic about learning to think critically. That was beautiful. More than half the class went to graduate school because they learned that they too could think critically. After no student in class seriously considered attending grad school before taking my class.
You’d think I thought I was responsible for their learning with how happy I was with the outcome. And in no way was I responsible because, as an instructor, I see my role as presenting information and challenging my students to bring out the very best of them. One student, a conservative, said that he’d allow me to teach him how to think critically but not make a Liberal out of him. I responded that that was never my intention. My sole interest was for my students to learn to defend their position with logical soundness.
Unlike what people are advised in this video, I saw my students- college-level students, as my equals. I told them that much. I wanted them to be ruthless in destroying myths they have nurtured and the fallacious arguments of others. I was confident they could be just as good or a better bullshit detector.
I often wonder about those who thought I asked too much of them when I asked them to think critically. Critical thinking should be the default way in which we evaluate information.
That aside, it's sad that the political machine has conservatives believe the lies they propose about critical theory. Because you don’t have to be a Marxist to be able to peel away at the bullshit politicians on both sides of the aisle sell their constituents as facts. Politicians are afraid that poor conservatives might think critically and strip themselves of the chain created by conservative politicians.
These chains keep the status quo propped up while poor whites are left to envy anyone who makes better progress than they do- namely immigrants and Black people. While they are being distracted by lies from both ends, the rich keep getting richer- because poor Whites vote against their interests, while they make little progress for being consumed by the BS.
Idk how they have not picked up on that cue. It’s time for White American working classes to get #WhiteWoke to the political games played by both parties to keep people dependent on a check or dependent on their employers. Without these people, the Republican and Democratic Parties would be FORCED to make significant changes for the working poor or suffer the consequences.
Those consequences would be a national (peaceful) working-class strike to the tune of the loss of BILLIONS of dollars. Just stay home. You don’t even have to 🪧 picket. This would not only hurt corporate America- the BILLION$ they make off the backs of the working classes, but it would hurt the national economy- a Fck YOU to all politicians. And NOTHING pisses off the rich more than LOSING money.
I’m not a Socialist. I’m a Capitalist who sees the Capitalist economy we have for what it is. It claims to be a “dog eat dog world” when in fact, it’s not. A real Capitalist economy would break down education barriers to allow education equity to promote the fiercest competition. And may the best person win.
That’s not happening because those in power are in power, not because they know. But because people like Gates and others leverage the intelligence and skills of other people they fear they could someday compete against or oppress THEM. And because of this fear, US employers need to pay workers a decent wage so more people can own a piece of the American pie instead of waiting for a bone to fall on their laps. A rise without increasing the cost of living- like is known to happen. Because that’s like giving with one hand to take it with another.
Oh…and no fake news about more people being above the poverty level when social mobility is reconstructed by politicians who widening the net by moving the “start line.”

You keep forgetting to capitalize Critical. These methods do not use any critical thinking. They use the Critical Theory type of thinking, based in Marxism.

    • @Angeprof
      @Angeprof 2 года назад +1

@@povertime6381 Well, I suppose you might be wrong. What most people seem not to realize, even critical theorists, is that not everyone is good at abstract or systems thinking- looking at the whole vs. a part. Meaning, most people see units or parts versus the whole (holistic thinking).
To understand Marx, Freiré, Foucault, Strauss, Adorno, and others who examine life at a structural level is to be able to adjust our lens and capture more information versus capturing less by seeing things as if we are wearing blinders.
Thus, to remove the blinders requires we see relationships or the interconnectedness of things (systems thinking), and critical theory assists students with critical thinking.
For example, I used Freiré’s hidden curriculum concept for one semester. I gave students the option to take the final or read their text critically. They had to read their texts anyway. They had to take notes throughout the semester. These notes were on texts and images that create an unrealistic perception about social reality and are used, unconsciously or not, to support social stereotypes. They learned to recognize fallacies, visual fallacies, the manipulation of statistics to support less than honest agendas, the effects of hidden curriculum on students, and how things we have normalized as being “the way things are” affect perception, cognition, and decision-making.
This particular group struggled with recognizing logical fallacies. Let me tell you, no one ideology in America has a monopoly on thinking critically. I blame that on people consuming the trash for news the partisan news outlets put forth. Generally speaking, Americans have outsourced their thinking to those who can think as little as they can or have ulterior motives in protecting the interests of the owners of news outlets.
The point is that critical theory introduced layers/strata in seeing the world. Those layers are interconnected. Not being able to see the interconnectivity of these layers is a problem with analyzing the big picture or the “god view.”

You may already be aware of this but i feel obligated to point out that Paulo Freire believed in seeing the world through a critical lens to attain critical consciousness. This is completely different then critical thinking. They use the word critical to make people think they are learning how to think critically when they are actually being taught how to see the world in a very particular way....through a critical lens. I'm sure I'm missing something here so please tell me the difference if I'm mistaken in some way

That is entirely different than teaching elementary, middle school and even high school. College is elective and they are adults so they are the instructor's "equals" if one decides to think that way. That is not the case in K-12 education. We taught per grade level what the political system is and how it functions but we never taught politics as that is subjective and not the same for everyone. They can decide what their politics are for themselves when they are adults. But thank you for writing this pat on your own back diatribe and being ever so progressive and "woke". 🙄

I disagree with this absolutely. I have an education degree (graduated 2004) and I have never heard of this man or his theories. I heard plenty of others! The students are NOT the equal, so to speak, of the teacher (yes we are all human beings). Classroom management is difficult enough without taking away all authority from the teacher. That would be like telling a parent they have no authority and the kids can just raise themselves and consult you when they choose to. We learned a lot of different ways to teach and to address different learning styles and abilities. We were taught not to always be the "sage on the stage" but to often be "the guide on the side". I certainly learned to teach students to think for themselves. IF the children are so wise already they can go ahead and teach themselves math as this theory suggests. Great! That is my least favorite subject to teach. Just because I was not taught this specific "method" does not mean I am/was an inferior teacher. I certainly did not want to be the one doing all of the talking in class. I liked letting them work in groups and in many ways to learn a lesson. I aimed to have them think as well not just to stuff a bunch of facts and skills in their heads. SMH

    1. Curriculum-based on Dialog, Reflection, and Interaction.
    2. How to empower students?
    - Teachers need to devise activities that train the students to become more responsible. (by boosting their self-esteem and reducing their anxiety level)

A criticar o criticavel (agora to eu aqui Paulofreireando), odiar o odiavel. .. Li obras que interpretam as obras de PF. Li tambem biografias nao autorizadas de seus criticos. So uma palavra meu amigo: Assustador.

I tried to read that book. It was really terrible. It was as if it were written by a high school student.

Mostly of his "work" is like that. He invent things that are impossible to translate because, its uncompressible even in Portuguese. I don't know why people keep talking about this cloud.

Again, PF endorsed Marx, Che and socialism. Arrogant which never went to a class room.

@@punisher6001 As a note, I went down a rabbit hole trying to consider practical applications of Mezirow (transformative learning theory) , who states he was highly influenced by Freire's emancipatory learning.
The problem with the Godless depressed faction is that it is all emotion-driven, arriving at the professional victim. Everything is based on increasing separation of the oppressed individual into a dark realm of cynicism. I am not an "Up With People" king of guy, but I know how to step back once in a while and apply the "Don't believe everything you think" therapy, whereas these drones go on and on. After a while, all Mezirow's work sounds the same. Super theoretical - he wasn't good at explaining application to something useful. Just my 2c.

Yes, if yogi want to teach people to learn to think. They won’t be manipulated by the government and that is a bad thing for capitalism.
