I love your content Scotty. You provide very educational videos that help thousands of piggie owners better care for their pigs. I'm even a member of your Patreon. :) I wish you would be less dogmatic on this particular point, though. Under normal healthy conditions, piggies don't get overweight. But it IS possible. I've commented about my story before but this is a video directly relating to the issue so I'll tell it again. My family adopted a pregnant American piggie (not a cuy). She gave birth to 4 healthy babies, 3 girls and 1 boy. I've charted their weights religiously all 3.5 years of their lives, daily until 6 months, and now monthly. The girls are all within 100g, averaging 1100g. Their brother was about 1200g until he was 2 years old. Then his old peeg boar cagemate died. Davion (the boy) had been steady between 1200-1250g his whole adult life. Then, within a few months of losing his cagemate and refusing to tolerate a new one, he ballooned to over 1500g. He would barely move around, just sit at his pellet bowl, eating until there was nothing but dust left. No matter how much food he was given, minimum recommended to unlimited, he would lay there and eat until it was all gone. We finally got him a 4 week old baby girl piggie (he was neutered years ago) hoping companionship of a very nonthreatening girl would soothe his depression and get him more exercise. Instead he has gained an additional 150g, totaling 1650g now. Let me remind you, Davion's natural stable adult weight is 1200g. He has heart disease and required daily Critical Care to maintain those 1200g. But once he became depressed, he legitimately developed an eating disorder and it's a genuine issue. Please don't tell people guinea pigs CANNOT get overweight. They CAN. Just like any other animal or person that turns to food for comfort, they can indeed develop an eating disorder. I'm sure it's very rare, but it's not impossible. Davion will likely die earlier than he would have. Heart disease is deadly to even a normal weighted pig (or human). One that is morbidly obese is putting undue strain on an already compromised heart. We have tried everything we can think of to get him exercise (even adding a second story to his 3.5x2 c&c cage) and a very healthy, balanced diet. But he refuses to exercise and will not lose the weight. It's tragic, watching someone eat themselves to death.
Hello, I have a question on your opinion. I have 2 female guinea pigs that are some where around a year old and I found another female guinea pig that I wanted to bond with them. She is 18 months old. They did ok for a couple of hours, just some chasing and head punching. But after a few hours the new 18 month old guinea pig just attacked and injured one of the other girls. Is that something where I should try again or try and regime the new pig? I don’t have enough room for another cage so I can’t keep her or get a fourth pig at that matter. What do you think I should do?
Thanks for reassuring me again. My vet said Gizmo was overweight. I can't wait to see what she says about Pongo, he has serious junk in the trunk syndrome. lol
I was feeling soo down and struggling to feel happy, its 1am in UK and this saved me and reminded me how cute and how much my piggies depend on you. Thank you
There's no such thing as an overweight guinea pig! If they get ill they stop eating, and having some additional heft can be the difference between them being able to recover or not. It also means there's more of them to love :) PS. DS9 is the best Trek series!
And the winner is... my Sylvie at 1378! Its true what you say about different breeds. Each of my 3 piggies are different breeds - at the same age - their weights are very different - Pea is 1037, Rosie is 1258, and Sylvie is a whopping 1378! She does also have one of those lumps, like Gizmo's. Keeping a close eye on that.
Shrimp misread the title. he thought it was "is my guinea pig too fast?". thank you for this! I do it every sunday night. and there's no scale in the kitchen since the piggies arrived. I did not think of adding an overall health column. will do ! (your first pronounciation of "tare" was the right one.) :)
Scotty, thank you so much for all your videos. I have two herds in a large C & C set up, split into two large enclosures. I rescued my two boars who were covered in injuries and one was underweight. I spent a year nursing, feeding and loving them according to your advice. I intended to rescue more, so I had the boys neutered by an exotic vet. I waited until the correct amount of time passed and then started to rescue my sows. Both boys now have 2 girls and they are all very chunky. Having seen how underweight most of them are when they came to me, it is fantastic to see them healthy and loving life now. Constant supply of 2nd cut Tim Hay, good quality pellets, filtered water in plentiful supply and salad/veggies at night. Love you Scotty and my piggies are an absolutely picture of health thanks to you!
Yay, that was epic, definitely very interesting. Thank you Scotty. Was worried about my two girls, who only come in at around the 800 - 850, with mum coming in at just over the 1000. But my vet assured me they are all very healthy. I put it down to their large space and lots of running around as they always have plenty of pellets, hay etc.
Hi Scott, I have a Gizmo too, just coming up to 1 year old, and weight last week was 1669g, he's a major chonk! . His 5 year old cage bro is around 1200g, though his weight dropped down to less than 800g after he lost his original cage mate to lymphoma. Thankfully he picked up again once Gizmo moved in, they are extremely happy together. I love your boys and your cage setups ❤️
As long as you use the same lightweight plastic container every time you weigh your piggies it’s not that important… it doesn’t matter what your piggies weigh, what matters is they consistently weigh the same…the consistency is key..
Thanks, Scotty! We looked up female guinea pig weights, and it said ours were overweight at 1100 and 1200 - I guess females are supposed to be smaller. We give them hay and pellets and veggies, so it's good to hear that they aren't actually overweight. We put a divider with a ramp on it in their cage to make them climb a little here and there, but maybe we don't need to worry about that.
Gizmo reminds.me.of.my Layla.always.like.that coloring. I lost her sister sometime Sunday night found her Monday morning in her cage crossed.over the rainbow bridge she was.seven in May. Rip.Bella.and Layla passed.three years ago this past Janurary.
A very important and entertaining video. I learned early on that regular weigh-ins are so important. Over the last 10 months, some of my piggies have had health issues requiring vet visits. The vets really appreciate it if you bring them the weight history. That tells them a lot. Again, I really enjoyed this video and here are some highlights (yeah, I had a little too much time in my hands today): 4:53 Gari’s piggie lips and face 7:53 Nate escaping 8:07 Pipsqueak waking up 14:44 Ron piggie lipz & ear scritches 15:35 BB Must watch 21:35 Dice piggie lipz 23:24 Shrimpy escaping 28:20 Phil escaping 32:46 BB walk-on Also, you have just about 34 pounds of piggie love on your hands right now.
Love your videos and this one in particular! Learned to do weekly weight checks from our current vet, who specializes in guinea pigs, and wish we had learned the habit sooner. It made all the difference caring for an older piggie and even helped us through a dicey health situation with our current girls when they were younger. P. S. Nate is a hero among pigs, I’m sure. Lol
Thank you for putting my mind at ease! I was worrying about my piggies. One of them does love to eat and seems pretty big, while the other is slimmer. Keeping an eye out on their weights!
Thank you for this video as it is very timely for me. Since I adopted four piggies from LAGPR in April, three of the pigs have porked out. One is now the shape of a lightbulb 💡. I keep reminding myself what Saskia says that pigs cannot overeat. Still, I thought the three pigs looked too plump. Thanks for reassuring me.
All the piggies are adorable and doing great, hope that lump goes away or will be ok, can you give us a update like you do? I enjoy all my piggy channels..so glad they have you..ty.
My 1200g boar back in time.😂 vet reaches into carrier. He's pretty huge. Followed by a lot of squirming. He was like a fish. I decidet rehoming when i couldn't give them exercise they need and they stop going on there hindfeet for treats easily.. 2 rex 1200 and above... It depends on many things like breed to and sex. As long as your pet moves good without struggling, everything is fine. When they do, try give them more activity and than look on foodchoices.
Glad I saw this video, I have a scale but it is way smaller than the one you have, couldn't figure out how to weight my piggy because you can't see the numbers when I put her in something to weigh her. Using the clear plastic tote was perfect, I could see thru the bottom and was able to read the numbers. Thanks for the tip.
I have the exact same scale, try a smaller bowl/bin where the bottom is fully on the scale, or I put them directly on the scale. When the bin hangs off the edge, a little shift in position can cause big fluctuations in weight.
I have that scale too, and use a small sandwich size box which my boys just fit into, so they can't move about too much and the reading is more precise.
I've had many guinea pigs over the years........some are naturally thick, and some are a bit slimmer......even on the same diet. The hefty ones, and the slim ones both lived to old age.
This is a fun video, it was fun guessing the waights while I watched you waigh them, I was pretty close with most of them 🙂 Guinea Pigs can become overweight and that can lead to breathing or joint problems
As you say they are the correct weight for themselves. My three girls weigh 1176, 1236 and 1270. They live in a 2x9 and should get plenty of exercise but they are pretty lazy for (almost) two year olds. Is there something I should be doing different...feeding them less than 1/8 cup of pellets a day?

Hope mine are too fat. He wasn't eating well and probably loss some weight. So that extra weight helped him survive lack of calories. He now eat back to normal. The thrift stores have great scales fyi. They are usually promotional items with logos and people get rid of them.
Hey Scotty, either this morning or last night my guinea pig passed away. I have another one but I’m not sure if she can stay by herself for a while because I won’t be able to get another piggy by December. Will my other guinea pig be okay?
I have a question. My two girls have started to have poops which if I pick them up with a Kleenex, I can squish them. Does that mean they're getting too much veggies? I've been reducing the amount I give them, hoping they'll eat more hay, but I've also noticed they're drinking more to compensate.

Anytime my piggies hit me up with wheeking I just throw a small amt of parsley their way.

XD maybe using the bathtime tub for weighing them was a bad idea. They see it and want to flee XD get a different colour for weight checks!
Now I imagine you watching TV with the gang 😍😄

Wow my girl Arya is heavier than almost all your boys! She weighs 1350 on average lol
I beat you to it easily, both of my boys are 1505g 🤣
How can I weight my guinea piggies?
I have an old school analog kitchen scale that I measure my boys on. I can approximate that they are both 1150 each, with one being slightly bigger than the other. Should I get a digital scale or is this old school scale ok?
I would imagine the digital scale is more accurate. But it is up to you. You can check out the one I have the link for. I like it
