    I did both achilles… one surgery in 2018, one non-surgery in 2019. I was weight bearing with no crutches in 10 days. Back rock climbing in a boot in 2 weeks. Rock climbing hard at 5 months. I was 56 at the time.

      @@NicoleHansen-mt9zi hello :) I did my right falling awkwardly in a bouldering (rock climbing) gym. I got surgery. A year later I did me left running up a warped wall in a ninja Warrior gym. Full rupture again, but went non-surgical route.

      @@whatdoyoubelieve194 I was more careful initially (from 5 weeks to 3 months post-rupture) with my non-surgical recovery. I felt the sewing together of the first achilles made it stronger right away (surgeon said that). But after that, both totally … not one better. I have slightly better flex forward on the one I got surgery on. I rock climb a lot (part of my rehab). Mostly bouldering. Fall a lot! Just turned 60. No issues. I don’t even think about them any more. :)

    I ruptured my right Achilles a week ago while dancing.
    Surgery wasn’t even suggested to me by the orthopaedic surgeon I saw (nhs)
    I had my vacoped boot fitted a couple of days after diagnosis and have to return to hospital at around 4weeks
    I have attempted partial weight baring but I am not there yet as I still have significant pain, bruising and swelling.
    Which is probably the hardest thing about this injury- I’m extremely active, and impatient by nature, so not being able to do anything is incredibly frustrating lol

      I'm six weeks into recovery ( 4 of these in Vacoped boot). Due to have first "angle" adjustment tomorrow. I agree sleeping is problematic but resolvable. Main problem seems to be lack of knowledge due to newness of this system. My main concern is that there is no planned specialist review of the tendon to ensure reconnection. The thought of going thru 10-12 weeks of this to be told it didn't heal is frightening.

    • @Always_Never
      @Always_Never 5 месяцев назад +1

      @philhogg917 that's what terrifies me too (I just tore my Achilles 3 days ago) saw the orthopedic yesterday, as we decided on non surgery...and got placed in a cast for the next 2 weeks. And like you stated, the worst outcome would have to start all over again after 10-12 weeks of already rehabbing it...I couldn't even imagine going through that again...I'm only 3 days in, and this is the most depressed I've ever been (as you know nothing is easy with this injury, a lot of guilt and negatively fill your head, and it's lonesome)

      @@sd4sell92 I had surgery on mine on the 3rd of march. Was in a hard cast for 2 weeks and moved to a boot. Not an adjustable boot, just an air cast type. It killed my heel to try and get around in it so after a week of it I took it off and have just been wearing some “hey dude” brand shoes. But making 100% certain I don’t put any weight on my toes. It’s heel only and I get around fairly well with no pain. Other that my heel being sore after some significant walking but other than that so far so good.

    Achilles. I am on week 4 (weight baring on week 2) and I get a walking
    boot on week 5 (my choice and not waiting until week 6 or 8) and that
    should be 3 weeks. I have a desk job and I have a hard time sitting
    still for long periods. I have been an athlete my whole life and I am
    in my 40s and did this playing basketball. So this really let me know
    that I have to be patient and this is not the end but just a long
    journey that I can recover from.

    • @CH-iz9fv
      @CH-iz9fv Год назад +4

      @ 1BOXINGKING1 Well, it has been a struggle but I am better but I have pain in my right heal everyday with stiffness. You don’t heal the same as you get older. You need to listen to the doctors on your way to recovery and do the PT. The PT on your own is some of the most important part of your recovery because this injury has a lot to do with you and what you do. Do your stretches and ice is your friend. Ice at least once a day but the more the better. You have to be patient with your recovery. It will take about 4-6 months to start running and jumping but that is a fast track. It took me 6 months to get back to a slow jog but that is limited with pain. I did a lot of PT on my own because I wanted to speed up my recovery because issues with the VA but the doctors said I was ahead on my recovery. Once you can put your full weight on your foot and do a toe raise, you will be good to go. Make sure you don’t rush the boot or cast. You will have a limp if you do. Also, get an ankle brace for support when you get out the cast and boot. Since it is your right foot, you need to find a driver. You can’t drive with a boot, I already tried. Driving with a cast is too risky. Once you get out of both. No long trips. You will find the pressure from the pedal and brake can be a little too much at times. Get some stretch bands with different resistance to build strength and just for stretching. Lastly, this is a long road. In life we have challenges but we are measured by how we respond to them. I am sure you will be fine. Take care.

Started therapy two weeks ago and the hardest part is trying to gain range of motion. I can walk very carefully now in the house without a boot but keep the boot on almost always! Week 6 non op here and im able to walk again without my VACOped - not able to stand on my toes though
    [edit]
    Also big disclaimer, dont be like me and take the boot off at Week 6 -
    Don't let your ego sit in the way of recovery, I'm pretty sure it wouldve helped me a lot more by sitting in the boot until week 8. Building calf muscles in the boot is easier than without the boot.

    Only a week in wearing this vacoped boot. Please can someone tell me how you sleep wearing this thing!? It feels like a slab of concrete, like someone is standing on my foot. I'd rather just have the injury than the boot at this point

      Did you ever heal completely? I'm hoping so...and did the boot ever become more comfortable? I can only imagine it's heavy and sweaty...which is going to drive me nuts as I go into the boot this upcoming week.

      @@Always_Never hey sorry for only just seeing this comment now. I've been out of the boot what feels like a lifetime ago now. I think I got out of it late December. Honestly I never got used to that boot in the day or when sleeping, on the plus side; The last month of the boot I could it take off so actually got some sleep. I actually found the lack of sleep the worst part of the whole process. That said the absolute paranoia that I'd wake up in the night and go to walk normally was strong, but no mishaps.
      I haven't healed completely but haven't tried to, I was very active before, playing football and ran a lot. I am back cycling and have been for almost 3 months now. I just push through my heels as opposed to my toes but occasionally I push through my toes to activate my weaker calf. It has 'caught up' muscle wise through just walking a lot but I couldn't jump from the weaker leg or sprint.
      I'm so sorry you've got the injury, I have a history of injuries and honestly I found this one so tough, maybe due to my age (mid 30s) hasn't helped. All I can say is follow the advice, the human body is quite amazing, it will heal, you will feel better and you can get back to normal activities. There is a plethora of videos on YT of athletes that have come back from this injury. I know they have the best physios, best nutritionists and best personal trainers but they are still humans that healed and got back to the level that they left. We can too. Its weird I see this comment today as earlier today I decided I am going to try and get fitter, healthier and return to the sports I previously did. 7 months ago I was dead set that I'd never even try because of how horrible the rehab is and fear of doing the injury again. But life is short and to be enjoyed.
      I really hope your recovery is going well. I found it a dark time so hope you are dealing with it better than I did at times. Good luck!

      You think that was bad? Try sleeping on it on a cast! I would of wish I had the option to go that route. Last night was my very first time sleeping on a boot and it’s a hell of a big difference than trying to “ sleep “ on a cast. I was casted for 4 week’s! I could never have a good night’s rest!

    • @Always_Never
      @Always_Never 4 месяца назад

      @michaelgil5104 that's odd I slept better with the cast...almost didn't notice it, compared to the boot (more heavy and hot) takes me couple hours nightly to fall asleep in it. Though big pro in the boot, is I'm able to walk in it (like a drunk pirate pace though lol)

      @@brownmamba4063 I would definitely recommend trying to get an MRI if possible if you really want to be sure. I partially tore my Achilles on June 28. Initially I did not get put in a boot in the proper position for almost two weeks. I was told from the ultra sound that it looked like I had less than a 5cm gap in the tear and likely wouldn’t need surgery. I didn’t walk much but did slip in the shower and had to put my injured foot down.
      My doctor wanted to schedule an MRI to be sure but they waited to place the order for almost a week. It was then denied by my Indira because my doctor just put it in as ankle pain. After an appeal they finally approved the MRI and it was scheduled for June 3rd.
      I started going to PT at the end of May and they actually referred me to a Achilles specialist because they thought I might need surgery. I’m 34 and a very athletic person so I wanted to get it fixed properly.
      The results of the MRI showed I had a 7cm gap in 75% of my tendon. Luckily the specialist was able to schedule me for surgery the same week of my MRI. He was very surprised my other doctor didn’t put me in a boot right away.
      It can be a hassle to get an MRI but if you are someone that wants to continue being active then I think it is definitely worth it. I’m not a doctor but there is definitely a big risk of tendon elongation if you’ve moved your foot out of that downward pointing position after the first 48 hrs. I was really upset with my initial doctor for not treating my injury seriously enough and I’m sure you may be angry as well. I hope some of my experience helps inform you on what you want to do.

    I don’t necessarily agree with this guy on some issues. I’m not a doctor. They want full time in a boot? Sleeping in a boot? I can’t sleep well in a boot. Associated health issues with not getting proper rest. After 2 weeks in a boot I started getting significant atrophy, super dry skin. Once I started washing my foot and resting my foot exposed for hours at a time, my foot started looking more normal. There is no weight bearing lying in bed. The foot is in plantar position. There is occasional small movement of foot muscles not associated with the Achilles. Itching is gone. My foot doesn’t just get 2 hours a week exposed to the air and using muscles. At that rate, PT would be extended to compensate for muscle atrophy. My goal is to walk, not dunk a basketball or run a marathon uphill all the way.

    • @maktiki
      @maktiki 2 года назад +5

      Smoking has a major influence on wound healing. The achilles area is far away from the heart so wound healing is already slow on this bodypart. Smoking causes small bloodvessels to constrict this limits wound healing. If you quit smoking immediately you can have surgery, and do not smoke ever again.
