The French Caribbean Island Guadeloupe looks from above like two butterfly wings. Its two islands Grande Terre and Basse Terre are separated only by a narrow channel. The modern infrastructure and the good food are mixed with the local culture. Gwoka is the music of Guadeloupe, which is reminiscent of slavery.
Located on the lesser Antilles, Guadeloupe is the French part of the Caribbean and belongs to the European Union. It consists out of different islands: Grande Terre consists of limestone with long beautiful beaches, Basse Terre is a mountainous island with extensive rainforest and the volcano, la Soufrière. There are also the smaller islands of Marie-Galante and La Désirade, the Îles de la Petite Terre and the Îles des Saintes.
When Christopher Columbus came to Guadeloupe in 1493, the existing populations were the Caribs. But Christopher Columbus did not stay, because the Spanish wanted to discover larger islands. The smaller island in the Caribbean were colonized by the British and French, so in 1635 Guadeloupe by the French. It was mainly farmers from Normandie, Brittany and Charente settled on the island and cultivated Coffee and sugarcane plantations.
With the French revolution, slavery was abolished in 1794, but it was reintroduced by Napoleon in 1802 because of the cheap labour and lasted until 1848.
The civilization today is creole, a melting pot: French, the descendants of black slaves, Indian immigrants, Syrian-Libanese immigrants and nowadays Chinese immigrants. Creole cuisine is a mixture of European food with African ingredients, oriental flavours and products from the Caribbean.
Gwoka is the traditional music on Guadeloupe, but not only music and danse, but also the joy of life and a reminder of the time of slavery

Caribbean Moments shows a different side to the Caribbean. Everyone visualises sand, sunshine and palm trees - but hardly anyone really discovers what lies behind them. In fact an unbelievable variety of cultures, music and religions has developed as a result of the different influences - African, Indian, English, French and authentically Caribbean.
This documentary series attempts to portray the people - be they the Rastas, who have a lot to say about their mission, the Amerindians in Trinidad, who still have their own Queen, or the Black Caribs - a mixture of escaped slaves and Caribs.
In addition, of course, there’s a huge variety of music: steelpan, parang, calypso, soca and chutney soca shape Trinidad, whilst other islands are especially scenically beautiful, such as Dominica, which is actually a single rain forest and which seduces with its abundant vegetation. Here too are the true Caribs, who occupy themselves with traditional boat building in the same way as their ancestors did centuries ago.
The films were produced in 6 parts to create a documentary series that shows what lies beneath the surface.
I now live and work in Gwada (Guadeloupe) with my husband. I love the island, and I particularly love Gwo Ka.
I'm originally from the UK, London, and my family roots are Nigerian/Yoruba. However, when I hear the Gwo Ka, I get transformed. The woman in the documentary is right, when you hear it, it can take you into a trance.

I visited Guadeloupe two years ago in April, and I must say... the island really stole my heart. From the second I stepped out of the airport, I noticed the island itself feels alive. As if it is a giant, magnificent whole organism in itself. I could almost hear it breathe, hear its heartbeat. The sounds from the insects, birds, leaves, waves... everything came together into this amazing, continuous murmur, that never stopped.
Every step I took, every sound, every smell brought me energy on that island. I felt so much closer to nature, Earth, life. Coming back home, in the man-made noises of the city, took me a long time to get adapted again. For a while, I couldn't sleep well because I missed Guadeloupe's breathing... and the rain. So much rain in Guadeloupe, but so warm.

I was at the Guadalupe several days in June 2016. Comparing the weather in central Europe with weather this beautiful island I have to say that Europe can be liked but Guadalupe - is paradise. Life slows down there. Ocean and sun you get a companion for days. I recommend to all!. Polecam.

Correction : there is pretty much the same tambiu/ gwo ka played elsewhere in the Caribbean. Haiti, Dominica, St Lucia etc

Guadeloupe is one of the most beautiful caribbean islands among others fantastic places in this region. that said the presenter really had an agenda, his translations missed about 30% or more of what was really said and totally changed the meanings of what the people communicated more than once .Slavery is a shameful part of the history of all those islands but trust me the people of Guadeloupe are not as obsessed with this period as the author obviously is. There is a reason why Guadeloupe and Martinique are not a "countries" but a French departments with all theirs oh so beautiful cultural specifics and diversity.

Guadeloupe is historically known for its resistance to french rule & Martinique is known for its willful compliance, so although both islands are dominated by zouk, you're more likely to hear a little more homegrown roots rock reggae coming out of Gwada than Martinique. More fyah!

I read a "Christopher Columbus" journal and he (as well as other, "explorers" /conquerors from Spain like De Soto) mention Caribbean Indigenous tribal people were adorned with silver, gold, copper and pearls with some tribes protecting specific gemstones, precious metals, .... its fascinating once you start reading these primary sources..

But is it cheap, we're backpackers. After watching death in paradise I would love to spend time there.
I have to agree death in Paradise really has been our inspiration to visit the beautiful country Guadeloupe and learn about the culture.
That is exactly why we're traveling there! I was never interested in tropical places before, but now I can't wait to go there.
We spent time in Tioman island of the coast of Malaysia, beautiful , different, Inexpensive, not perfect but still amazing. Anybody can comment on Guadeloupe and the Asian Tropical Islands comparison.
I'm from Guadeloupe, grew up there. But, I spent years visiting asian countries.
Asian islands and caribean islands are very different. Not the same feeling, not the same experience, not the same way of life !
However, the both region are beautiful and deserve to be discovered !
Just an important point : As it is an administrative region of France, Guadeloupe is expensive !

This used to be my favorite island in the Caribbean, but now I think Martinique is far better. I recently watched a documentary on both islands, and although Guadeloupe is more interesting in terms of geography, the towns on the island looked extremely rundown and disorganized except on Iles le Saintes. Martinique seemed
neater and far more pleasant, with
a sparser population and better beaches.
And Martinique ranks among the safest Caribbean islands, while Guadeloupe doesn't.
All I know is that I wanted to go to Guadeloupe, and now I don't.

They're still french colonies. They never gained their independence like ALL the other Caribbean islands have.

They have elected members to the Senate and the National Assembly in Paris.

The narrative propagated by the narrator of this documentary is false and misleading. Firstly, the narrator isn't accurate in stating that the still-French colonies of Martinique & Guadeloupe has the highest standard of living in the Caribbean. That is a misleading statement. Prosperous Island States including Trinidad & Tobago in the south, Grenada, Barbados, St. Lucia, Antigua& Barbuda, & Jamaica are all independent States that considering the atrocity of human trafficking during the trans-Atlantic slave trade, & the enslavement of African peoples, has done exceptionally well in terms of obtaining high standards of living and quality of life for their citizens in spite of challenging social & economic circumstances, not to mention they are currently hailed as potentially among the best places in the wider (OAS) region for both investment & retirement initiatives. Secondly & finally, just before the mid-point mark of this video, the narrator is herd saying, according to quote; "black slaves, I mean, the descendants of black slaves", as he describes the ethnic composition of the Guadeloupe's population. That to me is deliberate, racist, & a direct verbally polarizing assault on the identity of the Afro-Guadeloupean community, & at best unprofessional & bereft of journalistic dexterity. This video ought to be removed, reviewed, and corrected with an a formal apology to viewers as an atonement.
