Tips for a Non Aggressive White belt

  • I've received several questions from BJJ White Belts recently regarding aggression.
    One in particular that I used for this video came from our friend Megan. Who says she lacks aggression from her Full Guard and is unable to pull the trigger when she is rolling in her Brazilian Jiu-jitsu gym.
    This is a common situation I've seen as a Brazilian Jiujitsu coach.
    Some White Belts have too much aggression while others don't seem to have any at all.
    In this video I discuss some of the strategies I used to build aggression off my back. Because as a Wrestler who got into BJJ second. Being aggressive off my back didn't come naturally in my BJJ training.
    On the subject of aggression I also want to stress that if you don't naturally have aggression. It's ok. Many people are overly aggressive for negative reasons. Things like ignorance to the positions and fear of losing fuel this.
    My goal for anyone wanting to develop more aggression would be to do so based on their technical abilities. Rather than blind aggression.
    Anyways, I hope this video helps out any of you White Belts in BJJ with aggression in your training.
    Thanks!

    tried this the other night in the advanced class. apart from upper blue belts and the obvious people who would know what to do ( I'm a white belt, no stripe) was able to submit or at least maintain a favorable position against other more experienced white belts who were just looking for that quick submission. If I did get the tap, it was much later in the round when they would start to tire out and I was "fresh". Definitely good advice, just be chill, be one with the sweaty beasts of bjj.

    Thanks for all these great videos man. I feel that they give me a good insight on what jiu jitsu really is, an art form. I will be attending a bjj class on Wednesday. I haven't trained in awhile ; still a white belt. Bjj is like a painting, being a white belt is like a blank canvas, and black belt is the finished masterpiece of all the hard work, mistakes, and corrections. Thank you Chewi.

    Great advice! Seriously, this was such a helpful video! As a petite low ranked (two-stripe) white belt, I share the same struggle as Megan. I find it difficult to aggressively go for submissions from guard as the people I roll with are typically higher ranked guys who are much, much bigger than me, so this is perfect!

      Thanks for your great videos. I read once that closed guard is less suitable against someone much larger/heavier and it's better to play open guard and look for sweeps. Against much larger opponents, do you prefer to use closed guard, or open guard?

    Great stuff as always. I went a little different route in my development. I allowed everyone I rolled with to immediately put me in side control and worked defense and escapes from under side control and half guard for months. Once I knew I could survive and escape if my guard got passed I gained the confidence to be more aggressive with my closed and open guard because I had nothing to worry about.

    Ok, I just wanted to share some things that I have picked up at my gym. I role with a lot of high belts "Purple, and Browns". This has done a few things, helped me with pressure and controlled pressure this is because I want to mimic them. It has also hurt my attack game being I have to defend a lot (I'm a one stripe white belt but am a stronger guy than most). So I take what they do and show me and use on other white belts and blue belts.
    I even use what the Purple, and Browns use against them. Since I have been improving they don't hold back any more which is great it really shows my weaknesses.
    Why do I say all this, if you want to get better surround yourself with better people but realize what you do a lot of will affect your game. ASK QUESTIONS!! Higher belts enjoy teaching what they have learned!!
    Big fan of this channel, I recommend to anyone

    I went the opposite way. When coach taught people how to posture I quit close guard and went straight to open guard. I do not believe in using muscle to pull off any position. So I was not going to try to hold them in Gd. So my open guard got pretty mean and confident which made it easy to go back and work on close guard.

      I am with you. I am a white belt. A few weeks ago we drilled making the choice to open your guard so you can move onto something else. That changed my perspective and gave me more confidence. It's often unexpected and very effective to be able to sweep.

      @@newjerseydeals I'm a blue belt. Took me about 2 and a half years of pretty intense training to get there. My closed guard is my best game. I'm especially good at maintaining the guard and breaking posture. Which buys me a lot of time to get a sweep or a submission. I'm still not very agressive, but i do alright with attacks. Mostly sweeps and back-takes.
      My ultraheavy blackbelt coach always says he hates being in my closed guard, which i take as high praise.

    Thank you so much for this video! I started feeling like the only one having this problem. I'm a 2 stripe whitebelt female and people tell me constantly to be more aggressiv. Well, it's neither my personality to be aggressiv when rolling nor do I feel comfortable doing it. I have a more tactical approach, I stay calm and try to wait til my partner makes a mistake I can use against him. I tried to be more aggressiv in the past and my training partners (mostly white and bluebelt guys) get even more aggressiv when I do that and end up hurting me. Any suggestions how to be more aggressiv without being crushed to pieces in doing so?

I'm a very stocky type of guy , very compact with short and beefy legs... a strong dude...I tend to struggle in close and open guard due to my phisical specs but on the other hand i feel good in side control, knee on belly, guard passes etc....I'm a white belt (close to a blue) and i'm about to compete for the first time in a while. Should i go (in training) for my major strengh trying to master it and forget about about pulling guard, or should i pull guard as much as possible trying to overcome the way i'm built?

    I've had 2 surgeries on my right hip (healed but still "disabled") and it's very uncomfortable to try and hold someone in my guard. I had a visiting professor say something to the class that made everything click and help my guard game. "When you open up your guard, they're playing your game. When they open your guard, you're playing theirs." I decided then as a brand new white belt that I would only use the guard for a small amount of time and then be aggressive in creating a transition for me to sweep or submit, instead of trying to much from within the guard.

    • @martiallife4136
      @martiallife4136 7 лет назад

      Yup. Just use open guard. Don't do closed. Open guard also forces you to be active. Closed guard can give you a passive mindset, but not that it is passive. You can be very active but in your cause of your hips don't do it.

    I would say that being now a blue belt I feel like I have fell behind a bit only because I was never aggressive, I focused on defending so much for so long and became very comfortable in various positions.
    I now feel that other lower belts are far further than me in progression because they seem to attack far more and are more aggressive.
    Any advice Chewy?

    • @Chewjitsu
      @Chewjitsu  7 лет назад +41

      Hey Jamie. I've taken this down for a future video. But the short answer could be
      As a blue belt the menu has opened up a lot. That's the way it felt for me.
      If you went to a restaurant. In the beginning as a white belt the menu is really small. You find a few things you like, or are good with, and cling to them.
      White belts can be very tough because they don't have any other choice. They have a handful of useful techniques and they will use them over and over again with complete focus.
      As a blue belt you’re expected to grow and try new stuff. And with that. The menu increases and can be a bit overwhelming.
      With the increase of options it can cause analysis paralysis. Having too many options and not focusing on 1 to pull the trigger.
      To sort of reel this in. Just narrow down a few positions or techniques at a time and focus on them for a few weeks.
      Then as time moves on you can add more stuff or change based off the results your getting.
      This helped me out a lot.

      NERD ofalltrades, don't worry about the stripes. I had the same thought pop up for a split second when I saw others who I train with get a 2nd or 3rd stripe (I'm a White belt who just received his 3rd). I shook that thought off and concentrated on the lesson instead of who has what. I figured I'm learning the same techniques as the blue belt, purple, etc. well just let me worry about retaining the knowledge. If you submit someone...does it matter how many stripes you have?

    Agression in sports, mmm well in the medical field the straight answer is that it's just not in you naturally. Agression is sort of something you're born with, and you can control it to some degree but then that becomes forced aggression which isn't exactly the same. But hey u can be a good Jiu Jitsu player without being aggressive, lookit Frank Mir and Big Foot Silva, they have low tesosterone and naturally they're not exactly aggressive they just have good technique, so ya, if u can't play the rush recklessly game, ur gana have to play the patty cake grip/ patient perfect technique game. Honest to God I think that Jeff Monson has low T, cus his Jiu Jitsu game is all patience and slowness.

      Walking Corpse I don't think testosterone has much to do with aggression. I have a high testosterone level (test administered from a doctor) and I am a very non aggressive martial artist.

    • @walkingcorpse1224
      @walkingcorpse1224 7 лет назад +2

      thecanadiantrol Like I said, it can be controlled to a certain degree, maybe u have good mental control, or maybe your own personality keeps ur aggression under lockdown, I can't answer that for you, just like the rapist who was experimented during WW2, he had raped many women, and was thought to have XYY chromosomes, but he was normal (he probably just had high free testosterone), so scientists are finding out that you can still have normal testosterone with double the Y chromosomes. But no doubt about it, Testosterone does increase aggression, agility and reflexes (sex drive is seperated cus that has to do with free testosterone, a hormone different from regular testosterone.) Otherwise steroids wouldn't exactly be a popular tool in sports. Testosterone increases activity in the frontal lobe cortex, so this isn't exactly a "I think, you think" opinion situation, it's more of a if you fill this glass to the top, it's gana spill situation, with a possibility of the glass having holes to keep it from filling to the top, hence ur own personal being, but then that's urself stopping you from your own maximum potential, whether it be purposely controlled or not. I've been tested too, but cus I thought I was HIV positive, turns out my T levels are a 730, which is slightly above average, not by much, so I'm not exactly a good sample to use.

      thecanadiantrol If u were to ask me why someone with high testosterone can be maximized calm, but someone with low testosterone can't be maximized aggressive. My answer, calm is more easily accessible to someone with a hormonal abnormality, like having more bullets n not using them. Just like a Pitbull can be nice and friendly despite the massive frontal lobe cortex it was born with depending on how it was raised. Naturally aggressive but brought up to be kind.
