To me, it means trying to convince yourself that you're worth it. To love yourself. Which for some, is hard to do.

Why?
I was born on July 27th, I hear that makes me a Leo
I don't really know what that means
I'm 5 foot 6... and a half. I weigh a hundred and forty-five pounds
I don't know how to swim, and I'm a sucker for a girl with a nice smile
And clean sneakers
I'm still learning how to whisper
I'm often loud in places where I should be quiet
I'm often quiet in places where I should be loud
I was born feet first and I've been backwards ever since
I like ginger ale... a lot.
I've been told that I give really bad hugs
People say that it feels like I'm trying to escape
Sometimes it's because I am, and secretly I get really nervous
Every time someone gets close enough to hear me breathe
I have this odd fascination with things like sand castles and ice sculptures
I assume it's because I usually find myself dedicating time to things
That will only last a few moments
That's also why I tend to fall in love with women
Who would never love me back
I know it sounds crazy, but it's actually much easier than it seems
And to be honest, I think it's safer that way
See relationships, they often remind me that I'm not afraid of heights or falling
But I'm scared of what's gonna happen
The moment that my body hits the ground
I'm clumsy. Yesterday, I tripped over my self-esteem
I landed on my pride and it shattered like an iPhone with a broken face
Now I can't even tell who's trying to give me a compliment
I've never been in the military, but I have this Purple Heart
I got it from beating myself up over things I can't fix
I know it sounds weird but sometimes,
I wonder what my bed sheets say about me when I'm not around
I wonder what the curtains would do if they found out
About all the things that I've done behind their backs
I've got a hamper that's overflowing with really, really loud mistakes
And a graveyard in my closet, I'm afraid that if I let you see my skeletons
You'll grind my bones into powder and get high on my fault lines

I enjoy frozen yogurt, people watching
And laughing for absolutely no reason at all
But I don't allow myself to cry as often as I need to
I have solar-powered confidence, I have a battery-operated smile

I don't know much, but I do know this
I know that heaven is full of music
I know God listens to my heart beat on his iPod

I revisit Rudy’s poetry whenever I need to feel something

yeah? His self esteem is low and lands on his pride which can’t cushion him. The iPhone’s shattering is emotions shattering as they can’t piece what to perceive as good and bad

I fell in love with this poem the first time I heard it and I've listened to it over and over again since then. Particular lines resonate with me like 'trying to convince my shadow that I'm someone worth following' or 'I tripped up over my self-esteem, I landed on my pride and it shattered like an IPhone with a broken face'. **This is not meant to infringe upon Rudy's work. I've met him a few times when we both competed at the same national competitions, and he's a very nice and generous person, so I'm sure he wouldn't see it that way.

I come back to this after growing up and moving from a junior in HS to a person in the workforce after 5 years. Hearing these words again spun a whole new understanding of what he’s saying. Poetry has this power to be the words you need most in your worst moments. Love Rudy’s work

I have to listen to this exact poem at least once every three months. Makes me realize we are all struggling and different.
The first time I watched this, it hit me so hard, I sat there in silence for a few minutes afterwards. Now I watch this all the time.

I’ve suppressed my feelings.
I’ve been hiding.
After getting to know me and seeing the real me, my friends tell me I'm a little different.
So I wonder how it would feel to approach me for the first time.
My nerves get tense in situations in which they shouldn't.
In everyday situations, I panic.
In the end, my fear ends up getting the better of me because I am afraid and can't face them.
I disguise my feelings and act as if I don't care every day.
At the same time, I am frightened.
The growth of my feelings was too rapid.
As if they were starting a war I couldn't win.

You gave me the pep to my step
The swift kick in my ass
You made me believe that my pain…
My pain is something that’s come to pass
You gave me an introduction
To what feels like the beginning
Of the rest of my life
And I can’t thank you enough
Everyday I’m reckless but that’s something driven by passion
I’ll cut myself on the thorns through this path
But before you even begin that breathe
You don’t even need to ask
I know what I’m chasing
I know what my blood is being spilled for
And I couldn’t be any more… happier
You gave this to me when I was too cowardice to give it to myself
You didn’t spare a single thought on if I was worthy enough
You were soft to me no matter how tough I was on myself

i heard that makes me a scorpio
but too often my heart breaks open
so much so that i fail to believe
that it’s worth beating
there’s someone i want my heart to be worth beating for
but i just hold it in and write in deeply formed metaphors
i beat myself up a lot
and i want to say hi to this guy but...
i’m afraid that if i breathe too loudly
someone will tell me i don’t deserve to
i have this plasma shaped hole in my heart
where i’m waiting for someone to plant a hug, or some love
but it’s okay if you never do
i keep silent in my dreams because i enjoy the view of you
and maybe i cry in silence
because i don’t want to wake up the sun
or to disturb the moon
i could sleep forever and a day
to leave night and day at bay and in peace
the same way when i was abused they told me to keep silent
i have this odd fascination that God will return
and place a super nova sized star back in my heart
