An extremely powerful and yet deeply moving lament by a mother whose son is sold into fascism. Even as a man I felt the pain expressed by the mother through Dagmar's haunting rendition of this deeply disturbing song. A true masterpiece, dear Dagmar, and thank you for bringing it to us. A victory of truth over lies.

Song of a German Mother (1944 - Bertolt Brecht - Hanns Eisler) My son, your shiny boots and Brown shirt were a present from me: If I’d known then what I know now, I’d have hanged myself from a tree; My son, when I saw your hand raised In the Hitler salute that first day, I didn’t know those who saluted Would see their hand wither away. My son, you told me our country Was about to come into its own; I didn’t know all it would come to Was ashes and bloodstained stone. My son, when I saw you marching In Hitler’s victourious train, I didn’t know he who marched off then Would never come back again. I saw you wearing your brown shirt. I should have protested aloud; For I did not know then what I now know: It was your burial shroud.
I went to see Dagmar on this tour with my Sony Pro Walkman stuffed down my pants ! The shit you had to do as a bootlegger back then, now everyone and his dog can happily record away on their phone, no problem. In those days you ran the serious risk of getting a good kicking from the road crew !
Yes, this song was on her CD "Tank Battles", there was a German language version "Panzerschlacht". Her "Supply and Demand" CD had songs by Weill and Eisler in both English and German language.
Yes, but most isn´t avaiable anymore or at riduculous prices at Ebay and the like. I would wish a Dagmar Krause box-set as this would be also a great tribute to a phenomenal artist
@HopeWithPandora powerful stuff, this was written by eisler. check out 'song of supply and demand' and 'song of the soldiers' wife'. i think you will appreciate them.
I know the feeling. I used to record at lots of gigs with a Minidisc recorder and custom made stereo mic. Is your recording of Dagmar online anywhere to download?
Unfortunately not, 'cause I've slowly turned into a right lazy c**t ! I've got hundreds of tapes from the 80's and 90's just sitting there doing nothing, but RUclips is going to rescue them from oblivion ! I've got a few doozies lined up for postage to my channel so you should sub me. I'll put the Daggi one in, and a Peter Blegvad one that's pretty good. It will be after the New Year but sooner rather than later. Got some Van der graaf too. Recent tours only though.
Love her work with Henry Cow, Dagmar has one of the most beautiful voices I've heard

'sold into fascism' - as opposed to communism (e.g., Afghanistan '79), or liberal democracy (e.g., Afghanistan '01)...

What does she say between 0:46 - 0:52?? Please help
"Would wither at"
+DarkGlassly After "at"??
She repeats "would wither at" and continues with "the root"
So in full, it's "Would wither at, would wither at the root"
+DarkGlassly Thanks. :))
