Looking forward to rest of the vid.
    Good stuff.
Josh exists in " Tongue-in-cheek" mode perpetually.
    What he showed:
that the often maligned, $59 pedal was capable of getting at least one tone that was basically indistinguishable from that same tone on exponentially more expensive choices. Proving the thing isn't total trash and indeed has some great sounds.
Edit: now that I have watched the entire piece, your closing question is the true focus of the entire fiasco.
The high dollar stuff is not being consumed for actual performance - more for the mythology, the history, the hype.
Collectors set the price on the $1k and above market while many, many more frugal buyers affect the prices on the $50-several hundred-dollar range, due to different priorities.

what I love about Josh Scott's judgment on pedals is that he can basically talk crap about and praise pedals in any price point because he both can afford them all. He's always made the point that pedals like the Bad Monkey and also a Behringer fuzz can actually sound good. The videos aren't "Check this pedal out, it's a hidden gem that you've never even realized and you should buy it now", the videos are trying to tell us that "If this pedal can sound good and can sound like this 5k pedal on certain settings, then other cheap and neglected pedals might be able to do the same so you should try to keep an open mind to cheap pedals, even ones you disregarded in the past"

Ive had pedals that were so poorly made that to get the right spot, i had to wedge cigarette filters under the knobs to hold them in place. But, it hit that tone . That was what mattered at the time. Of course a hand-made pedal with quality materials and good features will cost more. The real indicator of the value is always going to be the resale market. Looking at drive pedals, there are a handful of circuit designs all are based on.
The difference is how the designs are implemented and this usually affects the gain and the tone stack. So if you play around with the volume and gain and tone you are going to be able to get pretty similar sounds coming out of them.
There are no magic components, they were all designed to reach that components goals and the spec sheet shows you how to implement that to your use case.

This is the second video I've watched where the host explains that Josh Scott was getting a sound that each other pedal got, but that doesn't mean that the Bad Monkey can do all that each of those pedals can do. Honestly, I understood that while watching the video, so I think it's sad that guitarists that are watching his videos are apparently not paying very close attention. You did a great job of getting this across. I've never understood the hype concerning anything guitar. I used a Washburn Idol for many years, and I got everything I wanted out of that guitar. Not expensive at all, but it does everything, even though it isn't a Gibson or a Fender or an Ibanez. When I was in a bluegrass band, I couldn't afford the almighty Martin, so I used an old Yamaha acoustic ... replaced nut and bridge, the right strings for the guitar, and boom! Worked great! I have had 2 Bad Monkeys, and used the one I currently have directly into recording mixer when I did my last album. I don't like every sound that it does, which is personal preference, but the ones that I do like I love! As for your final comments, absolutely those overpriced pedals are over-appreciated! I think it's clever and funny what he did. I also get a bit scared, Digitech was my favourite sleeper brand. Some of my best fx are hidden in those built like a tank pedals. One day, he'll do a whole show on my favourites, and I'll have to try and find some other pedals to match those sounds, within my price range. The delay I use the most, I purchased within minutes of finding it, just as an up and coming RUclips mentioned it. Exactly what I thought while watching the Bad Monkey video. I love the Klon circuit and use mine with the Gain at 9:00 more than any other position. And that’s a very popular setting for a reason. It just makes your tone pop out and adds a little bit of dirt. Never sounds like you engaged an OD pedal. Can a Bad Monkey do that? Perhaps, but I tend to doubt it.
As for your question about why don’t the other pedals drop in price when the Bad Monkey goes up in price? I’m not sure. But maybe it’s that the people buying a formerly $60, and now $200 pedal aren’t part of the market that’s looking for a $5k pedal.

I remember when these were issued in the very early 2000’s by digitech, there were a couple of them that were part of a lineup, it was the bad monkey, the Grunge pedal, and there was the Death Metal pedal which I used for years, but I remember an old review in a guitar magazine for the bad monkey pedal which basically said it was similar and a more affordable option to the Ibanez tube screamer and it was true for that time, the bad monkey pedal wasn’t at all expensive so paying a massive amount of money now for this pedal is kinda of ridiculous especially when it was originally compared to a pedal that is still heavily being manufactured to this day.

The difference between cheap pedals and more expensive, almost never shows, or is shown in head to head shootout. Tone, is only part of it. Cheap pedals typically have a much worse noise floor, which REALLY shows in an actual pedal chain. Cheaper pedals are made with cheaper components, and thus just don't last. And particularly for something like Klon/Klone, they won't react the same, at all setting, with the same touch, feel and response. All of which is rarely shown in a head to head, like he did.

    • @PatPosse

There is a great comment I think on the video Josh did where one person said "Damn! Now I have to buy a $5000 Klon to get the Bad Monkey sound!" Which is the point. Do you want the Tone, or the Hype? The Klon is all hype because as you said an I know from my own Wampler Tumnus, the Klon sound is reachable and affordable.
But people just want the BIG silver or gold one....just like John Mayer has or whoever they like has. If John Mayer threw his Klon in a dumpster tomorrow, said it sucked and said "This Amazon pedal is WAY better" Your pedal would jump to $5000 and you'd see Klons all over the place for $50.
Its called Herd mentality. People dont want something specific, they want what everyone else wants. FOMO kicks in hard and you spend $600 before you blink(FOMO-Fear of Missing Out). Once the FOMO passes or enough people say "Yeah, Josh lied, that pedal sucks" the bottom will drop out.
The way to beat this is...ignore it all. You decide what a "Klon sound" is. Or a "TS10 Sound" Go try other pedals. Play what makes you feel inspired and eager to play and let the nut bars, speculators and ill informed buy all the Bad Monkeys they want.

Sadly, they only realize this Klon is not it after they've shelled out a couple grand for it. It baffles me.

  • @RobertNolan
    @RobertNolan Год назад

The question asked is: if the $50 pedal can sounds as good as the $5000 pedal, why didn't the $5000 pedal devalue?
Well, if you got a copy of a Monet painting and it's a good copy, and it looks exactly like the original, why doesn't the original cost less?
If you had an Acura TL, and the Honda Accord is essentially the same car save for the premium features, why doesn't the Acura cost less?
If you had snap-on tools, but could go to harbor freight for the exact same types of tools which are cheaper, why are snap-on tools so expensive?
It's kind of a silly question, don't you think? Of course it's not going to devalue the other thing, that's not how supply and demand works. It just solidifies the price even further, or raises it the second someone validates the price by paying for it.

    • @PatPosse
      @PatPosse  Год назад +1

I love that we can respectfully debate and express our opposing points.
To me, There's a detail you are missing here and that detail is what validates the question at hand:
"if the $50 pedal can sounds as good as the $5000 pedal, why didn't the $5000 pedal devalue?"
The $5000 pedal is not really a 5000 dollar pedal, people are paying that much for it cause it's supposed to be that great and different from anything else...
This proves that it's not THAT untouchable a pedal...
I don't think the point you are trying to make is as good as you think it is but I get what you are trying to say...
Just like a Monet (completely different thing but I'll validate your example here), a Klon is only worth what someone is willing to pay for it, and as long as people are shelling out 5k for it, it will remain that high. Same with real estate; a small apartment in a city will cost more than a farm house with a few acres of land somewhere else... is it really worth that much more? to someone it is.
The Monet painting has the historical value, the collection value, etc. just like you can buy replicas that are the same (or sometimes even better built) than the original Brian May Guitar, they will never have the historical value and of course, the fact that the Red Special was made by his own hands. On the Klon it's just electronic components made into a circuit and there's very many of them around. I understand that they are "rare" but it is the hype that made it be the price it is today.
The Acura/Honda example is spot on though, it's definitely a status thing and that further proves the point that it's really not worth as much as it costs. I don't get it, but hey! It's their money! lol
      Thanks for watching and commenting!

    • @RobertNolan
      @RobertNolan Год назад

@@PatPosse thank you for bringing up historical or collector value. I'll expand upon that to make myself more clear.
To start, though, I'm not advising that anyone should buy a Klon to obtain a tone that couldn't be obtained from any of the hundreds of clones or similar pedals. That's silly, but it's anyone's money and they can do what they will.
      Historical or collector value:
One could consider 1/8000 as a limited amount and therefore a collectors item, as the Klon centaur stopped production at around 8000 units. That will stand as my first point.
I'll further validate that it's exactly like any other art/artist example: my original example was Monet. As it stands, from a historical standpoint, well the "Water Lilies" by Monet was at one time just a painting by a popular painter(though a different scale of finance,) and you probably could have bought or commissioned a one of those works for a more reasonable price when it was a lot younger of a painting and not popular - let alone historic. I say that editorially, we're both a little too young to have known or met the painter, but the point is still very clear. History, impact/change, importance, or accessable increases value.
Another example would be that any Van Gogh art wasn't worth anything until after he died, as his popularity was not until after his death.
A '59 Les Paul became synonymous with the best example of a Les Paul over time by either collectors, experts, or a combination of the two, and thus it gradually increased in value as fewer examples either survived or became available on the market.
Finally, back to a Klon Centaur, which wasn't $5000 until Bill announced he wasn't using the same components. The KTR increased in value along with it, as he was continuing production with those diodes for the KTR but it ran out. History, as it moves forward, increases the value and collectibility of something when a change impacts it's status. It is emotional, or calculated, or fiscally reflective of that change, but that's how price changes due to supply and demand.
A person's reasoning for the purchase could be a varying degree of things, we can't just suggest that people are only buying it on hype alone. It could be an investment, a higher quality tool (They are in fact engineered by MIT folk), a real collectors item, better performing, or upgraded feature/components -though you'll have to get past the goop and really trust Bill with the NOS 1n34a claim.
You reiterated what I initially said, you could buy a replica - which I highly agree with and suggest as well, but I'll say it as clear as I can: those cost less than the real thing, may do the same thing, and for all intent as a utility it would be fine and anyone could be happy with it, but they aren't the real thing.
I own neither the Centaur, nor the KTR, but this is how supply and demand works. Demand goes up + supply does not increase or it goes down = value increases. If Bill came forward and said, "just kidding I found the exact same diodes and I'm making the Centaur again in mass production. It will be 1:1 exactly the same, and there will never be a wait-list," the Centaur value would simply plummet, because there is nothing to hold its value like before. Maybe some value given the lower number in production, but nothing more.
      Thanks!

@@RobertNolan You make some great points which, were validated on your inicial comment, I was just making sure I understood exactly what you mean. I can agree for the most part with you now, except that the Klon has no where close the historical significance a Monet or even Les Paul has, thus making the price of it, ridiculous (to some extent, again: if someone is willing to pay 5 grand for it then it's worth that to them) but I don't think it's just the fact that it's a renown pedal or the fact that it's "limited" that it's bring it's price up. There's definitely a status/mojo combo that's making it legendary. That being said, it's definitely a fascinating piece and the more we talk about it, the more it appreciates in value!

I love every JHS pedal I've ever tried out. The only JHS pedal I own is the PG-14, the one that mimicks a vintage tube amp pushed completely over the edge (it's a fuzz/bitcrusher pedal, otherwise). It was so much fun, I just had to pick it up. And the explanation given for the circuitry of the PG-14 on the JHS RUclips channel was fascinating.

Intentionally or not, he has definitely done a lot for victims of pedal snobbery. When I was in highschool (early to mid '90s) BOSS was good, D.O.D. was garbage, and the boutique pedals were for rich kids and rock stars, according to some guitar friends of mine. It was supposedly embarrassing to own D.O.D. pedals. I wish I didn't care so much about other people's opinions so much back then, because they made an envelope filter that I really liked...

I really appreciate what is Josh doing. I know a shit about electronics, so being able to recognize better what is "under the hood" of many pedals on than not being caught by brands marketing and buy another type of something for much more than I need is great. Im a guitar player and sometimes I feel like guitar players are dumbest musicians of all. And overdrive pedals category clearly shows this geartrap illness. Maybe Josh was thinking that after that video people will think like - "maybe klon and other drives are overated for what they are doing, so I can stop searching for best overdrive", but no, not guitar players :D. Lets make bad monkey overrated too!!!

I never liked the Bad Monkey when it came out. Not my cup of tea. A video isn’t going to change my opinion. I tried all of those digitech/DOD pedals when I was a kid. I was more of a hardcore punk/metal kid back then and I really loved the grunge pedal. I wish I still had mine but I probably played it until it broke. It had a great sound for fast high gain heavy music. Run a noise gate behind it & it gets precise & articulate, especially for stop & go type stuff. I liked it way better than all the “metal” pedals of the time.

I think most musicians are simply snobs and believe that they have a gift and hear the differences what the various myths and marketing teams created. This is why the prices where they are. I got my bad monkey because it was dirt cheap, had an awesome name and sounded as an TS clone should. Also it always appeared to be like a "working musician's weapon", the kind of stuff people use on the road which shows that the sound is adequate and the design is sturdy. Let's face it, majority of musicians rarely see a studio, so there is little point to use items on stage which cannot even be insured against damage.
