St Denys Level Crossing

  • A Class 377 and Class 158 pass Adelaide crossing in St Denys, both heading to the adjacent St Denys station and towards Southampton Central. A Class 66 hauling containers can be heard passing on the South West Main Line during the second closure, just behind the row of houses. This crossing is on one of the tightly packed streets of St Denys, a suburb of Southampton bounded by the SWML and the River Itchen. The roads - and disappointingly, pavements - are littered with parked vehicles, some very close to the crossing making passing difficult. The crossing still has old mechanical bells and decades old barriers. Surprising really these haven't been replaced, but then again the traffic is low on this road and the trains are frequent.

Great videos! 👍😁 Interesting and odd that the bells seemed to have trouble keeping a consistent tempo (especially in the second lowering). Goes to show just how old everything here is, I guess.

Great video and crossing! Nice to see you post again. Something tells me that the faster speed of the bells is how they're "supposed" to sound. Some older mechanical bells here in the US can have trouble keeping a steady beat too, I've noticed.
