They all can. Eau Rogue is the left hander at the bottom of the hill and Raidillon is the right hander going up the hill. Taking Raidillon flat out is the challenge.
The "old Eau Rouge" in the title had me thinking this would be the original Eau Rouge, which none of them would take flat-out because it was nearly a hairpin.
For anyone wondering, in basic terms; none of these 80s or even the mid 90s cars were able to check 300+ km/h with their setups for Spa with those kinds of accelerations, so our buddy here tries to lenghten the video by changing the setups for these cars by giving them a low downforce setup which basically manipulates the nature of the car's handling in a bad way.
I see why EAU Rouge got changed. There was very little room for error and the turn was really sharp at the end. Some of the newer F1 cars from the '80s and '90s either couldn't take it flat out, or lost control when attempting to do so. Now it is wider with more tarmac for racers to recover from going off track, and the turn is a little bit easier to take with more room for error.
I was surprised that the 97 slick tires failed, but the 2000 car on groves didn't. Even the narrow wing 10 cars could do it. Can you do a drag race or top speed video with different era cars sometime in the future?
This video made me remember about the crazy gambling between Jacques Villeneuve and Ricardo Zonta (BAR's partners) at the end of the 90's, when they tried Eau Rouge and Radillon flat out and crashed!
Interesting video. Although even now it's not always a good idea to take Eau Rouge flat out as it can compromise your speed down the Kemmel straight. Sometimes a slight lift will stop you drifting onto a bad line.
I hope everyone can appreciate from this test that despite crashing hard into the wall, none of the cars sustained any damage. Even the mirrors are still in place. That's safety at its best 👌🏻
Wow…I can’t believe that it actually took 19 tries for some of these vehicles to finally start making it through the Old Eau Rouge, flat out. This one set of turns at Spa must’ve been a real problem child for every 20th century F1 car from each of its respective eras to discipline.
