    An even more simpler way of explaining this is: if the pedal is tone-based (it helps create the tone you want) then put it in front of the amp, if the pedal is time-based (the effect is created by modulating the time of the signal so delays, reverbs, trem, chorus, etc.) then put it in the effects loop. This is the best starting point to get you going then you can start experimenting with the order from there.

    • @ryanbarker3978
      @ryanbarker3978 4 года назад +1

      Modulation effects (Chorus, Flange, Vibe, Phaser, etc.) are not time-based effects, they change the pitch of the signal.

    • @fabianwho9797
      @fabianwho9797 4 года назад +1

      @@ryanbarker3978 But create the actual effect by delaying the other signal from few ms (flanger) to much more (delay) and phaser eliminates certain frequenzies and rotates the frequency over time so time effect ;) Neither really shift pitch except maybe the chorus for an almost inaudible amount

    • @fabianwho9797
      @fabianwho9797 4 года назад

      And for just that logic many old phasers sound best BEFORE distortion eg mxr phase 90 so you are half right :D

      I run everything in front of the amp, old school. After all, that's how Hendrix, Jimmy Page, Robin Trower, Jeff Beck and everyone else created their iconic tones.

    It's funny how every guitarist does it differently, and that's what makes it awesome. Like, there's no way I'd put a tremolo pedal before the amp, distortions or overdrives, but here you are doing it. We all have things that work best for us.

  • @LilSirAxolotl
    @LilSirAxolotl 8 лет назад +3

    I'm still learning. So I was already wondering why anyone would need an effects loop in the back when you can just put a chain of pedals between the amp and guitar. It's all finally starting to make sense to me now. Makes me less hesitant to start making purchases. Especially because I'm running two amps in stereo making things even more complicated for me as a beginner. But it's so much fun! Thanks Phillip!

    This was cool. It kind of highlights the limitation of a multi-effects pedal -- you can't move things around in and out of the effects loop like this. Although if you are as clueless as I am regarding this stuff, maybe that is a good thing!

    I used to have a Zoom 505 that did everything for me. Here's how i set mine up: F6 was an acoustic effect, A1 was lead guitar with wah (I had the Zoom FP01 expression pedal plugged into it for volume, whammy, harmonizer and wah), A2 was metal distortion with whammy (as in pressing the FP01 down would drop the note, like pressing down on the whammy bar, to a maximum of 2 octaves), A3 was lead guitar with harmonizer up to 2 octaves on the FP01 and A4 was lead with chorus and delay and volume on the FP01. The other patches and settings were pretty much standard as they were out of the box. I always had my amp clean when the Zoom 505 was plugged in because pressing both pedals bypassed the zoom effects straight into the amp when I wanted a clean tone. The acoustic effect at F6 wasn't very convincing to me tbh. Still sounded like a clean electric but it was a warmer sound than straight into the clean amp so it was still a useful effect. There was a tuner on the bypass function as well which was handy. I got great use out of the unit.

    Kind of surprised you didn't mention set up for high gain vs low gain amps. Also amps with no fx loop and how to set those up the best. So many new guitarists can only get a 15-30watt basic amp with no fx loop and just a few pedals. The TONE KING has a great video on that using mini amps to show the order if anyone is confused about it. Plus how to set up your pedals for high and low gain amps as it's slightly different. Enjoyed the video

      +Phillip McKnight...I'm moving everything around right now! ....so what kind of pedal board is that? I'm debating on whether or not to get a pedal board. I don't need my pedals to be mobile because they aren't leaving my home studio. I don't want to get a pedal board and then just grow out of it. The board you have there seems like you could do a lot with it. I guess I could always do a front-end board and a back-end board to at least organize things a bit. Right now it is just growing on the floor in front of my amps.

  • @giancork1656
    @giancork1656 7 лет назад

    Great stuff..... only thing, as you point out, there are many different approaches. Especially I guess if you playing mainly on the clean channel and use pedals for the rest. So far I always played clean and with everything before the amp. I have to try yet the fx loop.... Also, I have beel playing around with pedals placement a bit and I find the chorus before distortion more pleasing to my ear. I also tried the compressor after distortion, where, instead of sending a compressed signal to then get distorted, I can boost volume and add sustain after, and so keeping the tone of the distortion clearer...... question. If you play on clean channel where would you place a tremolo? I always thought it should stay at the end...... I have no tremolo yet....but soon :) tnx for video

    ...but wouldn't the tremolo be best AFTER the distortion? ...if you put it before, it will vary the level of drive...your distortion will clean up and then become more distorted as the tremolo effect oscillates. I'd prefer a consistent tone if I was essentially turning the volume up and down.

    +Phillip McKnight I'm trying to decide between the Wide M3 and the Big Kahuna Holeyboards and I was hoping you could help me. The pedals I need on my board are (not in order) Boss TU-3, Ernie Ball VP Jr, Crybaby Wah, Proco Rat, Fuzz Face (original full size), Digitech Whammy, Boss PS-6, Boss Super Chorus, Boss DD-3, Boss NS-2, Dunlop MXR M-108, Xotic SP Compressor, Ibanez Tube King TK999. So, as you can see I have a decent amount of pedals + a good amount of larger pedals. I'll definitely be buying more pedals in the future but when I do they'll likely replace a pedal as opposed to being added to the board on top of all these other pedals. So, what size do you think I should get? Could I get away with the Wide M3 or should I play it safe and get the Big Kahuna? ORRRR, should I go with a different pedalboard altogether? The only other company I'd consider based on the ones I'm familiar with is Aclam. I saw your video plus I'm familiar with their boards and how they too can have nice 2-tiered systems which I need. PLEASE HELP ME PHIL!!!!!!

    I still have issues using the effects loop on my amp for the purpose I need. It's a Marshall 210H amo with a loop with a level knob. I wanted to use the loop for delay (I have a Strymon TimeLine) and other modulation pedals. But now I wanted to use a noise reduction pedal but I don't get the results I want. Amp is noisy at high gain channels. I don't know what to do. I've purchased many gates, supressors and similar stuff with no results. I recently bought a Sentry fromTC Electronic and want to correctly get rid of unwanted noise without having to change for an expensive JVM410HJS edition with individual noise gates per channel. Okay, so my question is, and if anyone here in the comments can help that's cool too, I have a Rocktron Guitar Silencer, a Cry Baby and a Dime distortion pedal. (also a MXR 10 Band EQ, and a Tube Screamer TS9), where could I put these, to get the metal chainsaw tone? I'm sure thousands have asked, but I just stumbled upon your channel. Oh, yeah, live I'm running a Randall RH200 half-stack. Any advice from you or anyone watching would be greatly appreciated.

    Mr. McKnight, great video as always, thanks. One question though; I love my ancient digitech rp20 but I love my ancient Marshall valvestate distortion. Is there a way to use the effects loop with the rp20 so it doesn't become the actual tone generator but a collection of stomp boxes? Running it inline with the guitar on the clean channel gives me the sound of the pedal with the multitude of sounds and distortions which is okay, but running through the distortion channel it sounds arse! The pedal board IS the tone as oppose to the amp. Long winded but I hope you know what I'm asking. Love your channel.

    I tried to split my pedalboard as described . I use a Walrus Audio Phoenix 120V Power Supply and ended up with a very loud grounding loop . Help !!! How do I fix this issue ???

    What if you don't have an FX Loop on your amp? Is there a way to set up delay and other modulators with distortion without it sounding bad?

    Nice video. Where would I put the noise gate?

      +defin99 You can put it in the effects loop . Or if you are only using the pedals for sound and the amp clean you can just put it at the end of the pedal chain. Either way it will do the job in the effects loop.

    Looper seemed to be amped twice somehow this way when playing 2nd track again didn't match the gain ,was a hassle to dial its level on the fly. With the next live track being different volume.

    What kind of pedal board is this? I've been looking for one like this for a while.

      I'm guessing same place you'd put a tube screamer? isn't it similar to a ts 808? So i'd try in front of the amp.

    What about a tuner? It has no sound value but I did notice guys like Colter Wall using the tuner to shut off the guitar while talking vs lowering the volume control.
