    This is my home built, low cost, light weight, compact bike trailer. I don't have welding skills or equipment so it's built out of plywood and aluminum scraps and a salvaged twenty inch bike wheel. It tows very well and is stable unless the load gets too top heavy. I've used It several times a week for grocery errands, trips to the big-box stores and an occasional camping trip It's my modest effort to become a little less car-dependant and a little more fit,

      techblackdog deadmeat I wish I would have photographed my first attempt at building a one-wheel bike trailer. It was made of aluminum tube and interlaced lawn chair webbing. It didn't have enough torsional stiffness - the back wheel would flop from side to side. That's why I chose to build with spruce stringers and 1/8" plywood, I've formed a box that won't twist. I'm not trying to throw cold water on your idea; I think aluminum tube and plate would make a terrific trailer - just remember to build in torsional stiffness. ////carl

  • @MarkHarrisonBNE
    @MarkHarrisonBNE 8 лет назад +1

    Darn clever! When I first saw you riding it I was wondering how it worked. All the other single wheel trailers have a steerable yoke. I guessed there was something clever going on but I couldn't quite figure it out.
    My only concern (and I'm sure you've thought of this already) is that the wear on points of contact need to be managed. The steel pin (i.e. the 6mm cap screws) will probably outlast the forks. Perhaps it should be the other way around? That is, make the pins from a softer material than the forks. The pins would be easier to replace than the forks.
    Alternatively, some sort of replaceable bushing (say nylon or HDPE) on the pins would also do the trick.
    Thanks for the video.

    • @CarlHolmgrenwoodworking
      @CarlHolmgrenwoodworking  8 лет назад +1

      +Mark Harrison Thx for kudos. The 6mm bolts on the bike have replaceable rollers made from copper tubing. The rear wheel just slides in the fork but since the rear wheel doesn't move until the bike steers about 10 degrees, it doesn't move nearly as much as the front one does. //carl

      @@CarlHolmgrenwoodworking
      Once the slack is taken up do the steering angles match each other, front and rear? My guess is that the longer the trailer, the more steering action you would need to keep the trailer wheel close enough to centered to avoid overcoming the minimal yaw angle you have at the bike's axle.

    One thing didn't strike me well . . . where you stated the trailer handles only 45 pounds. I typically do 50 pounds in a backpack. I personally would want a trailer to haul about twice that. Otherwise you have a great design. I'm also looking to make one with no welding involved.

    • @CarlHolmgrenwoodworking
      @CarlHolmgrenwoodworking  8 лет назад

      +Buzzards Bass Thanks for looking at my video and commenting. I've never tested the trailer to destruction. I've just noted that with more than 20 kilos, the trailer seems to flex more and feel a little less stable. I am going to develop plans by building another trailer. That will give the opportunity to test this trailer to destruction, find the weak points and establish a maximum load. Also the plans version will have a lower body so the center of gravity will be a little lower. Goran Kropp bicycled from Stockholm to Everest with a load of 70 kilos on a one wheel bike trailer. His trailer was attached to the bike seat post. His book is titled "Ultimate High". ///Carl

    Beautiful design and implementation. I would only want to know the high speed stability and disturbance rejection. A spring aligned rear wheel hitting a funny bump/hole at speed could quickly go unstable, or at least that would be my fear. I love the wood composite marriage. Surprised you didn't manage to put in some kind of inertial braking system ;)

    • @CarlHolmgrenwoodworking
      @CarlHolmgrenwoodworking  3 года назад

      Jon, Thankyou for the kudos. The trailer wheel is held in the straight ahead position by two fairly stiff springs. It s very stable at any speed; over any train. Inertial braking? Of course, that's the next challenge. ////carl

    This is a beautiful trailer. It would be awesome if you can take a few more detailed shots of the fork plates. I'm still trying to understand the way you've mounted those plates to the rear dropouts, and how it actually holds the trailer.
    The steering and cross-streeting design is simply brilliant! You have some horizontal play ( X-axis). Does your mounting design incorporate some vertical play of the trailer (on the Y-axis)?
    Once again, this is a marvelous design, and to put it bluntly, it's one that I would love to base my trailer off haha.

    • @CarlHolmgrenwoodworking
      @CarlHolmgrenwoodworking  10 лет назад

      Thank you, Jaskrit, for the compliment. Please see about 2:50 to 4:00 of the video. The fork plates slide on two 7 mm capscrews that are permanently attached to the bike. These capscrews are screwed into permanent plates attached to the bike with clamps around the stays and with a screw into a threaded hole in the rear dropout. The bike is attached and towed by a tension spring on each side. When riding straight ahead, the springs simply hold the fork plates tight onto the 7 mm capscrews. When steering the bike to the right, the spring on the left stretches and allows the left fork to slide on the 7 mm capscrew. When steering left, the right spring stretches and the right fork slides. .
      Of course the trailer can pivot on the Y-axis (the trailer pivots freely up and down as the bike moves over humps and dips).

      Damon T., Thanks for the compliment. Rear wheel clearance while turning is the the reason I think the concept is not marketable. In use, it really is not a problem; occasionally in a tight spot, I find myself getting off the bike and picking up the bike and trailer to to reposition them. Why not leave the rack in place all the time? 700 grams.......
