  • In 1989 New Zealand television underwent a major transformation with the introduction of stereo broadcasting. Channel 2 (now TVNZ 2) was at the forefront of this technological advancement and in November that year, it hosted a historic event that showcased the power of stereo sound in entertainment: the Channel 2 Coca-Cola Music Weekend.
Spanning 46 hours from Friday 24 November (at 10pm) to Sunday 26 November 1989 (at 8pm), this marathon event featured a wide array of music-related content (e.g. music videos, films, documentaries, live concerts, interviews etc), all broadcast in stunning NICAM stereo.
The event was hailed as a major success, marking the first time that Channel 2 had transmitted in NICAM stereo (though stereo sound was first introduced in the Auckland region in 1989). The audience response was overwhelmingly positive, with viewers praising the high quality sound. The success of the Channel 2 Coca-Cola Music Weekend paved the way for further stereo broadcasts on New Zealand television.
Among the many highlights of the weekend was the screening of the film 'Absolute Beginners' in the early hours of Saturday morning (25 November 1989 at 1.45am). This stylised 1986 musical, set in 1958 London, explored themes of teen culture and pop fashion and was introduced by Fenella Bathfield and Rikki Morris, who co-hosted TVNZ's late afternoon kids show 3.45 Live during 1989. Its stars included Eddie O'Connell, Patsy Kensit and David Bowie.
