  • David discusses how most people will benefit from thinking about their stuff more than they are currently, but not as much as they're afraid they might need to.
    ---
You need to think about your stuff more than you think. Whatever you have collected or allowed to accumulate into your environment that doesn’t belong there permanently needs to have something done with or about it, to move it to closure. And unless you’re OK with piling up a never-ending inventory of incoming things that pull energy and take up space in your psyche, at some point you’ll need to clean up. What we need to do about something is not immediately evident just because the email or the letter or the gift you got, or the random idea you had is there. You must THINK what to do with it and where it belongs. Is this something to trash, or give away? Is this something I need to keep in some trusted place in case I need it later? Is this something I need to do something about? Not a lot of thinking is required, but enough to decide what the very next action is to kick-start it toward completion. That thinking is often avoided, until the pressure mounts to deal with it. People subtly freak themselves out by thinking there’s too much thinking to do about things that are not immediately evident. As I’ve often said, you have to think about your stuff more than you think, but not as much as you’re afraid you might. You’re thinking there’s too much thinking to do. Thinking about stuff initially usually takes about 15 seconds, to make a judgement call about what to do with this thing and how to deal with it effectively and efficiently. But it does need some thought. And you must put your thinking muscle into motion. It’s a great energy saver.

I'm from China, and my English is not very good. I'm glad to see you add subtitles to the video to facilitate my understanding. I bought 3 of your books and have been practicing them, which is very helpful to me. Thank you.

Such a timely reminder that thoughtful consideration of our belongings and decisions is key to maintaining clarity and efficiency. Taking a few seconds to assess and act on items can save us from feeling overwhelmed later on.
