  • One of Bernhard's most famous and acclaimed, The Loser is a memoir about the two crankiest Austrians of all time trying to be world-class pianists, before a friendship with the young Glenn Gould, greatest pianist of the 20th century, destroys their lives and ruins everything. Funny, cantankerous, bitter and formally hypnotic -- only two paragraphs, if they could be classed as paragraphs, break up the 170 page book -- it is stream-of-consciousness, the consciousness being that of an unmarried, frustrated, furiously haughty European aesthete.
Having never studied German, some proper nouns gave me pause -- I decided that, in order to hedge my bets, I ought to try as many variant pronunciations as I could think up. I apologise if you are troubled in your listening by knowledge that "Traich" should really be "Tray-ick" -- by the time I had clocked that it was far too late.

Thank you so much for posting this!! I haven't been able to find audiobooks for any of his books except in German. I'm a huge Bernhard fan, but I'm having some troubles with my vision and can't read much.
