      To be clear, it was the Boxers who did the "intervention." The Qing government wasn't defending China, so they created a mass uprising to exterminate all foreigners and Chinese Christians. Herbert Hoover an American engineer working for the Chinese, had to flee with his wife Lou to Tientsin, where they helped defend the city. Lou Henry Hoover is, as far as I can tell, still the only American First Lady who was an actual combat veteran.

    The entire thing was a nuts! Qing Dynasty declared war against the world -- by attacking embassies at its own capital with a bunch of boxers (instead of regular army...btw Qing didn't had modern nationalized army yet back to this age ), just showed how ignorant and fool the Qing's regime was . Given a fact that the south eastern provinces of China declared they were not in that boxers sxxt, and Qing's navy cooperated to the coalition reinforcements by surrendered without firing a single shell. All these with clear mind knew that only given the Western imperialism a perfect excuse to carve up China.On the other hands, it also showed how desperate that invading by Western imperialism, forced to cede lands and signed unequal treaties, let the foreign army into Qing's capital since 1840 the first Opium War. That laid the background of the raising of extreme national sentiments and hatred against Western in some parts of China, and end up with entire China fallen into the hand of Chinese Communist Party , which raised the flag of nationalism, in 1949.

      @salvadorvizcarra769 9 месяцев назад +14

      What? "Qing Dynasty declared war against the "World", by attacking embassies... Just showed how Ignorant and Fool the Qing's regime was?" Are U implying that China didn't have the Right to Defend itself against the invaders of its Homeland? Look here: For centuries, all Asia was invaded by Western Powers. England occupied India, Burma (Myanmar); Singapore, Malaysia and China (Hong Kong, Nanking, Shanghai, etc). France dominated all Indochina. The Netherlands intervened by the Force of its Arms, to all of Indonesia. And Belgium, Germany, Portugal, Spain, and of course, also the United States were in South East Asia cuz, for example our country, the US, occupied the Philippines since 1898. (Spanish-American War). The Empire of Japan, when defeating to the Tsarist Russian Empire, it also decided to "Grow" by invading its neighbors. In those years, all European nations had colonies in Africa, India, the Middle East, Asia and America. (England came to occupy almost ¼ part of the planet). For its part, the US, in 113 years of existence as a nation in those years, had "Grown" 711 the size of its territory from its original 13 colonies. Japan for its part, had fought on the side of the winners in World War I (1914-1918), and they, the Japanese, not awarded any "Gain". The western victors of WWI divided the world. Japan was excluded. Thus, Japan's motives for attacking and expanding as the Europeans and the US did seem clearer, right? Then they, the Japanese, attacked China in 30’s, which was occupied by 6 Western Powers for almost a century. None of the Western Powers occupying China at this time, OPPOSED or fought Japan for Invading China. NONE! Then, 11 years later after having occupied the territory of China and coexisted without any problem with the Western Powers within China, they, the Japanese, attacked Hawaii, which in turn, this Island had been occupied and annexed by the US in 1898. (In 1900-01, Hawaii became US territory and Hawaii ceased to be an independent nation after more than 630 years of sovereignty. By the time Japan attacked Pearl Harbor, the United States had just completed the 40th anniversary of the military occupation and annexation of Hawaii). They, the Japanese, attacked Singapore, which was then a Colony of England. They, the Japanese, attacked the Philippines, which were occupied by the US and whose Gov’r, Douglas MacArthur reined as Emperor. Yup… Truly like an Absolute Autocrat. Therefore, the Japanese did NOT attack (In the 40’s), Singapore, China, Indonesia, Malaysia, Borneo, Timor, the Philippines, etc. In reality, the Japanese attacked England, France, Belgium, Holland, the US, etc. China, destroyed, ruined, debased by Opium, had to fight ALONE against all the Western powers, plus Japan. And today, Western Propaganda and Hollywood have made you believe that Defending the Homeland with Boxers was nonsense. Cuz "The Chinese People are the bad guys in the movie".

      The Qing had modern regiments. For some odd reason of history most were Muslim. But the Empress and her court were slow playing the situation, relying on the Boxers to seize the Legations for them, and surround Seymore's Expedition. Which is why the Taku forts were manned, but Chinese navy never sortied, and the army sat out most of the attacks on both forces.

She made sure that the legation was surrounded by imperial troops which she had control over,and not boxers which she had no control over. The empress knew that China had to get along with the western world,but the boxers were relentless xenophobes who wanted all foreigners out of China.

    • @nordstern2664
      @nordstern2664 25 дней назад +1

      Its not racist... it was simple because at this time their were no chinese actors in the west. China was poor, underdeveloped and closed to foreign powers. So the filmmakers could not use native actors, they must improvise. Not everything is racist, because it looks so... sometime its a good idea to see the world and political situation in the time were the films were created before condemn them as racists.
      You can not value a historical event, products, etc without knowing the historical context of it. And you can not value historical action with modern morale. If you do so, ever people in the past, even the open-minded, cosmopolitan and unbiased people in the past are with current morale and ethical values were rassists as hell. If you want to critisize someone in the past, you must evaluate him, with the ethics and morale of the time he lived in.
      Or do you want to condemed for an action you did in the past and which was not criminal. But with new laws years later it is criminal... was your action criminal or not? It was not... because at the time you did it, it was not criminal and legal. You can not condemn someone retrospectively for actions which were not illegal while they did them.
      If the government increases the fine for speeding from 20 to 50 EUR... the government can not demand the money from further speeding, only from current and future speeding drivers.

      @@nordstern2664 there’s a movie called flower drum song with a predominantly Asian and mostly American cast that came out in 1961 and predates (with the exception of Gunga Din) practically all the movies I mentioned here, so to say that there was no Asian or Chinese actors who could have portrayed Asian or Chinese characters is demonstrably wrong,the same could be said about black actors who could have covincingly played the role of the Mahdi in “Khartoum”…being ethnically accurate in films where ethnicity is part of the story did exist even in the 30s and 40s but usually in a negative sense such as how Japanese characters are portrayed in movies dealing with WWII or Chinese characters are seen in where Western culture comes into conflict with Chinese values and traditions….so there were many examples of actors who were available to perform in roles that they were ethnically suited for but Hollywood choose to go with what’s marketable and palatable to their audiences…

      Really? I mean the events on this movie happened a century before the vietnam war though so i dont see the connection.
      Anyways, i loved this movie, and im not white.
      Cheers from Brazil :)

      This was the peak of Cold War perios where they started making tons of self jerking movies. Watch US Afghanistan and Vietnam war movies and see how they lost the war, hilarious

    Charlton Heston was just an average actor. He really had no range. He more behaved than acted.
