    My apologies for not knowing the lock washer size. However this is a great alternative. This will keep your take down screw from back out.

      Yep, the o-ring has solved any issue I might have had. (I put one in before I ever shot the gun.)
      Now, if I can only figure out to solve the "bumped safety" problem. I hate having to hold my right thumb down with my left thumb.

    I just picked up one of these, the take down screw has been completely re-designed and comes apart very easy & doesn't come loose at all now :)

    A lock washer is NOT a good idea! It can scar the frame, and makes the screw too high. Instead, go to the plumbing section of Lowe's or Home Depot and. Get a pack of rubber o-rings (5/16" OD x 3/16" ID x 1/16"). Pop one on and you can remove and replace the screw easily, but it holds fine. I've been using one on each of my Victories for the past year or so.

    I wonder if a little teflon tape would work. Thin white tape you put on pipe threads to kept from damaging brass fittings. It's cheap, 99cents for a roll of it. Cheap enough to use every time you take down the gun and you don't have to worry about it falling to the ground and getting lost.

    FYI...The O-ring fix. A #61 O-ring is a 9/32" od 5/32" id 1/16" wall. Don't try to find it by the #61 designation because you won't find one (at least I couldn't after visiting several hardware stores and Home Depot). You can find them by the SIZE above at a good hardware store. I picked up several today at Ace Hardware at ,59 cents apiece. Like someone said in the threads, I would hesitate using a lock washer unless it came from Smith and Wesson and they approved it. Don't want to bugger up the screw seat. And I don't want to use blue thread lock or fingernail polish when it is, after all, a assembly/disassembly screw. So I went with the O-ring solution. I took it to the range today and it works great so far! Fired a couple of hundred rounds and the assembly screw was still tight. But, it's your choice.
    Further, I LOVE my Victory! I've had a lot of .22 pistols, and this is my very favorite, Yes, the assembly screw does get loose after firing a few clips of ammo, but the o-ring fixed that. The only thing I don't like now is the magazine safety. So, I ordered a magazine disconnect replacement along with a Victory trigger, and a Halo charging ring from Tandemkross. Expecting delivery this week.

    I just picked up the Victory late last week and went to the range today, I did give it a clean and lube (per the manual) and every other shot would not eject? Maybe every 2 shots. Super frustrating! Was shooting CCI AR 22LR 1200FPS Brought it back to my gun shop and he said it was to dry, I told him I lubed it per manual and he said that is not enough and gave the slide a decent amount of Preppers Choice White Grease. I will take it to the range tomorrow to test it out. The shots that I was able to get to the target was bullseye from 15 yards on a splatter target. Love the trigger and accuracy with just the basic sights (no fiber optic sights on this MA compliant S&W Victory)

    For anyone still having this problem a couple layers of teflon tape around the threads on the takedown screw fixes this. 200 rounds through it and the screw did not come loose.

    I shot 150 rounds through mine yesterday and found that it had worked it's
    way out even WITH an added spring washer installed! I also found that
    mine doe NOT like 'Winchester M22' ammo, did not chamber all the way
    multiple times, 2 other cheap brands had no problem.
    Locktite for me from now on. Love the pistol though, too much fun!

    After almost breaking my wrist I was able back out the screw...I had the same problem at the range but it would back out after only 10-15 rounds...went to my local hardware store and the owner looked at the screw and said the 1st couple threads looked stripped so no wonder it was backing out...looks like I will be on the loctite train! I had suggested the Victory to a friend at my club and he purchased one and S&W recommends cleaning first but both of us could not get the screw out and our local gunsmith could not get it out! My friend called S&W and they told him ship it back but it would take 4-6 weeks to get it back....S&W REALLY needs to address this situation...

    That lock washer did not fit into the recess of the gun frame. The washer OD can not exceed the width of the socket head cap screw or known as the head of the takedown screw which is 0.314". We are currently in development of a perminant fix to this problem which will be introduced in a week or so. Thank you. Wayne

    There is a much thinner type of lock washer with very fine, small teeth on it which would be better.

    Mine came with a screw with the small red plastic/nylon nub close to the end of the screw that goes in the gun that helps keep it in. Can't find the name but we used a lot of them building pumps. It came out snug (not tight)until the plastic/nylon plug cleared the gun and than it spun on out. Just got it and haven't shot it yet so I'm not sure if it will stay tight after repeated firing.

    The black take-down screw did not come out of mine Victory. The entire screw assembly unit -- grey screw that threaded into the barrel and black take-down just loosed up together, and I was able to lift the barrel off. Can't tell if this is good or not and/or S&W made some kind of change to keep the smaller black take-down screw from falling out. Appreciate any insights.

    One more issue that happened to me is that the screw broke in half. It appears to be a cast screw? It Just snapped off. also I noticed the piece that the screw goes into was loose on mine and in your video it was on yours. S&W has no wrench available to fix that. I made one. They did send me a new screw but I am less than happy but I loved this gun right until this happened.

    Looks like you lost 1 1/2 to 2 threads using the lock washer to me. Looks like the coarseness of the threads should have 1 1/2 times the diameter for length of actual engagement. It looks like the female threads are in a loose piece and could possibly be replaced with a new one with finer threads along with a matching screw.. Oh wait that would entail a recall.

      Exactly. This is the easiest thing to do and doesnt cause any issues at all. Once there is loctite on the screw, it will still hold fine after removal and reinstall without applying more. It dries on the threads and holds it my experience. Anyway, its an easy fix to this issue

  • @jtdundee
    @jtdundee 7 лет назад

    Just picked mine up yesterday and wanted to clean and lube it before using... but the takedown bolt was too tight.
    I twisted the longer 1/8" hex wrench that I had in the tool box, I put a vice grips wrench on the supplied hex wrench but that didn't grip enough and just came off. Took the pistol to my mechanic and his hex wrench bent. He took it next door to the machine shop and their hex wrench twisted. We finally put the pistol in a vise and used an electric heat gun on high for probably... oh... at least three minutes. Maybe five, being careful to shield the plastic parts.
    Tried it once more and with a mighty push we heard a "crack" and the bolt broke free.
    After the pistol cooled for about 15 minutes I still needed to go outside and grab a handful of snow to cool down the barrel so we could touch it. We found traces of red on the threads and the barrel where it made contact with the frame. I can't say it was red loctite from the factory but I can assure you it was a red thread locker of some sort. When I reassemble it I will use a socket with a 1/8" hex head on a torque wrench and set it to 40 inch pounds to see if it stays tight. If not, then we try the alternatives.
    So..... if at first you don't succeed - heat heat heat. Then push!

    • @jtdundee
      @jtdundee 7 лет назад

      It's been three weeks since that post. This has been the most accurate pistol I've shot, especially when I put an inexpensive FieldSport red dot on it for my old guy eyes so I am not going to change the barrel or trigger. It functions with everything from hyper velocity to subsonic stuff without a hitch so far but I haven't tried CB or BB caps. To stay away from the dreaded "barrel coming loose on its own" problem that some experience, I just carefully cleaned the male and female threads associated with the barrel screw with alcohol to take all the lube off and it stays tight.
      Think of your car's wheels... you do not put lube on the lugs and the nuts do not come loose.
      So clean the threads and don't lube them and you may be happily surprised.

  • @grossini1

    The problem with my Victory was not a loosening takedown screw but a screw that I could not remove! It was over-torqued at the factory (Smith admits this is a problem) and the hex wrench provided does not loosen it. Tried a better allen wrench, heat, etc. and still could not get the screw to budge. A major design flaw in an otherwise fine pistol. Buyer beware!

    • @mattclark2670
      @mattclark2670 8 лет назад

      I just got my victory 2 days ago and I had the same exact issue! I couldn't loosen the takedown screw no matter how much force I was using. I finally had to get out the longest hex wrench I had so I could get a better grip and just went for it and cranked on it until it broke loose. I thought I broke the bolt at first to be honest, but luck was on my side for this one. Smith & Wesson definitely needs to fix this issue ASAP because it's the only flaw with this pistol in my opinion, yet it is a huge issue!!!

    Have any of you had the barrel lug come off the barrel?

      Yes I have ----waiting on S+W to tell me the lugs thread size so I can tighten it down with another nut from the hardware store to get it off the screw

    This is a very lousy product for a new intro. C'mon fellas, adding O rings and comoression washers to a new pistol to keep it from loosening up in normal use? Does any one out here consider this acceptable performance ? How dumb do you think we are Smith & Wesson ? BYE, BYE

    Poor design from S&W, especially on a 22 pistol that must be kept clean due to the dirty 22 Ammo....give me a Ruger any day of the week.... any model, no tools and never come loose ......

    Any gun that needs a utensil to do a field strip is a bad gun in my oppinion. And adding washers and home made fixes to a new gun? S&W should be ashamed of themselves

    I call BS on your "lock washer fix"! First off there is no room for a lock washer to seat in the screw channel on this pistol(that can also be seen when you go to tighten it up in your video, then you edit the part out where you take the lock washer off and tighten up the screw) Your rubber ring fix is what you came up with after you realized your "lock washer fix" was bulll. A drop of loc tite is all you need it's not messy and the screw comes right out when you need to clean it.

    It is ironic that Ruger has come out with a new (Mk 4) pistol that is easier to take down about the time this Victory model gun was released. This coupled with the silly safety on the S/W double action revolvers that can jam when using hot loads, has really shown that S/W has brain dead managers. So glad I no longer own their products.

      At TWICE the price. I don't see how it is worth twice the price. But if you have unlimited funds, go to it. I have 6K rounds through my Victory without a hiccup. It looks almost identical to the Ruger.
      What does a revolver have to do with the Victory?
      BTW, the Victory came out seven months ago. Not at the same time as the MK IV. Their new design is kind of admitting that the earlier Mark design sucks, IMO.
