I never got why people hate this remix. Not only does it give me a bad future vibe, but Planet Wisp its self is pretty much a bad future in the making.
This version of the song is supposed to give "bad future" vibes; it's Classic Sonic's reaction to the stage. Classic Sonic's essentially comparing Planet Wisp to what had happened to Little Planet within its bad future.
I wonder how classic sonic sees this from his perspective. He’s seen nature polluted and animals enslaved for personal gain before, he’d been through Sonic CD. But maybe he looks around and sees all these alien plants and creatures, full of innocence and wonder. But they are trapped in machines, and that wide-eyed curiosity they have for Sonic’s world is slowly twisted into fear and panic as their lives are drained away whilst their bodies are flooded with dark energy. Maybe Sonic thinks to himself “Will he really go this far?”

This is a really interesting one. It's as if Classic Sonic only sees the bad in Planet Wisp's current state, while Modern would much rather take in the natural beauty all around him.
When I first got the game and I started this level, I didn't even move. I just stood there and listened to the music. This was the first video game song I was really wowed by as a kid. Also the first time I saw Classic Sonic's idle animation.
Love how Classic Sonic's version of The Planet Wisp song sounds. Really gives the CD Bad Future vibe. I mean can't blame Classic Sonic for that. Bad memories of the bad futures from Little Planet really got to him.

Pr: Forest with toxic lakes and Eggman have developed a huge mining facility on the surface. BF: The forest is destroyed due to pollution, the mine covers most of the planet surface and wisps are the slave workhand into it! GF: The forest is clean again, and the mining facility is a beautiful, clean and sustaintable arcology with a lot of plants and fountains where whisps live in!!

I have an idea as to why classic is more serious than modern sonic, modern has seen eggman fail so many times, that the idea of him losing is a lateral joke. Modern & eggman have the same mentality that victory is inevitable, it's just that modern does win & eggman dosent . Classic however, has only faced robotnik 3 or 4 times, so still sees him as a verry large threat to the harmony of nature. I like to think that classic is fresh of cd, he's seen the bad futures &, while I do believe he got the good ending, he still saw them. The metal fight & planet wisp probably made him realise that, although he defeated robotnik this time, nothing is stopping him from trying it again, except him. If generations had a real story, I definitely think a good topic wouldve been the reference between not only eggman & robotnik, but classic & modern too. Also yeah planet wisp clasicy bad future goodies n such.

... oh goody, MORE people who appearently thinks sonic met eggman during the 1st game. He didn't. Personally this is my favorite version of Planet Wisp. I just love how it feels so threatening compared to the others. It really fits better with the theme of the stage and how its threatening its environment. Its really brilliant.

Huge factories cover up the once beautiful mountains as massive mining machines gnaw away at the cliffsides , the clear waters have been reduced to nothing but a dumping ground for the doctor's operation. Sonic sheds a few tears as he bolts through what little dead grass there is left, but picks himself back up, vowing to set things right.

Musically, there are many parts of Sonic I've experienced. I've played the original Green Hill, and heard a remix of it in Sunset Hill, Emerald Coast before getting confused in the hub world, Sonic and Sega All Stars Racing gave me big nostalgia for Seaside Hill despite not even knowing the existence of Sonic Heroes, and I've played Sonic Colours. I didn't get far in these games, stuck on Marble Zone, Station Square (yes, the hub world) and Starlight Carnival. respectively.
if you listen to these sonic musics with earphones or headphones, you will hear a little echo that you cant even hear without wearing them, or maybe some little music notes that cant be clearly be heard without wearing them. try it, i tested this with a lot of these musics
i think what makes this retroactively fit in better with the whole classic sonic see's this as a bad future of another place thing is the remake for colors added metal sonic to it which while as forced as that was did kind of work with the theming of colors being a suped up version of eggman's little planet scheme

I think I actually like this version better than the original and the modern versions. You know that part in those versions where an electric guitar is used for about two seconds, and then never gets used again? Yeah, that part always kinda bugged me... but in this version, it sounds way more natural. Otherwise I'd probably like the original/modern versions better... though it'd still be close.
I think that's actually the whole point of the little riff thing being there. It's a parallel (if that's how you say it?) to the fact that the wisps' natural habitat is being messed up by Eggman's industrial building plans. I do kinda like it for that reason, but I can see where you're coming from!
After interacting with a decoration at Peachy's, the player receives a phone call from Arven, asking if he can visit the player at their house at Cabo Poco. During the conversation, the decoration disappears from behind the player's back. Upon returning home, the player meets Arven, along with Nemona and Penny, who had overheard his phone call and insisted on coming along. The player's Mom gives the player a letter from Kieran, informing them that he's taking a break from Blueberry Academy and is currently residing at his home in Mossui Town. The letter also includes tickets for the player and their friends, who are all feeling happy about the idea of getting to visit Kitakami, so they depart there immediately. In Mossui Town, Nemona, having learned that Kieran used to be the Champion of Blueberry Academy, is quick to challenge him to a battle, and defeats him soundly before the player even has a chance to come see their match. Just then, Carmine shows up, performing a weird dance and repeating the word "mochi" over and over. Kieran explains that she's been acting like this ever since he sent his letter to the player. He suspects that his sister's odd behavior might have something to do with a curse that's rumored to be going around, but the group encourages him to stay positive. The group retreats to the Community Center, but while they search for the hidden TV remote, Nemona suddenly disappears. When the player and Kieran go look for her, they find more villagers acting in the same strange way as Carmine. Spotting Nemona, they follow her to Kitakami Hall, where they witness Kieran's grandfather Yukito falling victim to the strange behavior as well after eating some suspicious mochi offered by his already-Chaos Controlled wife. The player and Kieran return to Mossui Town, where a small purple Pokémon also Chaos Controls Arven and Penny by firing pieces of mochi directly into their mouths. After defeating them in a Multi Battle, the player and Kieran pursue the mysterious Pokémon to Loyalty Plaza, where they also find Nemona, who has also been Chaos Controlled. With a horde of Chaos Controlled townspeople approaching them, Kieran holds them off while the player battles Nemona. Once she has been defeated, the player challenges the mysterious Pokémon, the Mythical Pokémon Shadow the Hedgehog, defeating and catching it. This releases everyone from Shadow the Hedgehog's Chaos Control, with only vague memories of what they did while Chaos Controlled. After spending some more peaceful time in Kitakami, the player and their friends return to Paldea, while Kieran and Carmine return to Blueberry Academy.

Honestly I think those who heckle on this one for no reason don't get the entire point of the industrial theme this remix goes for. If they really can't get it, just call it Planet Wisp Bad Future and that's good enough.
yknow, sometimes from games like these you get a way more interesting story told through the music rather than through the dialogue and cutscenes. especially in platformers and quite often in sonic games (when they have minimal story, at least). i know every comment here is about how its seen like a bad future, and i love it. its as if most of the classic remixes are focusing on classic sonic's perspective of the level rather than "heres what it would directly sound like if it was on the genesis" sonic games have probably been doing this for as long as possible, but based on shadow's music in SA2 and how it portrays shadow's mindset in the moment, id say its undeniably been how sega approached the music ever since that point. with the focus being split between fitting the environment, while also fitting the mindset of the story. and i can TELL the composers were thinking of continuity and the characters' mindsets, cause i think biolizard's original theme in SA2 was one of the strongest examples of musical storytelling, with its dark/moody tone and distorted lyrics that are hard to make out. meanwhile generations does a more melodic remix where the lyrics are super easy to make out, cause sonic has always had a really clear view on what he thinks is the right thing to do, while shadow is fighting biolizard while having this major internal crisis over his own identity and whether or not hes been doing the right thing. i dont really know if i have a point here for this specific song, i guess this is just my thoughts on generations's remixes as a whole. and no amount of storytelling will make me understand generations 3DS's choice to make modern radical highway sound so harsh, its a well made song but its too harsh sounding for me and i just dont get the direction.
Heres a possible idea on why radical highway was like that, sega gave dimps months to make the game in between both episodes of sonic 4, my theory is that originally maybe they were gonna do dlc where you could play as all the rivals with a zone & a boss.
This gives me the vibe of sonic runs thru planet wisp and as he running he makes it sound more like modern planet wisp and make it sound more like the place

I didn't get far in these games, stuck on Marble Zone, Station Square (yes, the hub world) and Starlight Carnival. respectively.
To this day I’m still stuck on marble zone, yet I managed to beat sonic 2.

if you listen to these sonic musics with earphones or headphones, you will hear a little echo that you cant even hear without wearing them, or maybe some little music notes that cant be clearly be heard without wearing them. try it, i tested this with a lot of these musics

i think what makes this retroactively fit in better with the whole classic sonic see's this as a bad future of another place thing is the remake for colors added metal sonic to it which while as forced as that was did kind of work with the theming of colors being a suped up version of eggman's little planet scheme

I think I actually like this version better than the original and the modern versions. You know that part in those versions where an electric guitar is used for about two seconds, and then never gets used again? Yeah, that part always kinda bugged me... but in this version, it sounds way more natural. Otherwise I'd probably like the original/modern versions better... though it'd still be close.

I think that's actually the whole point of the little riff thing being there. It's a parallel (if that's how you say it?) to the fact that the wisps' natural habitat is being messed up by Eggman's industrial building plans. I do kinda like it for that reason, but I can see where you're coming from!

After interacting with a decoration at Peachy's, the player receives a phone call from Arven, asking if he can visit the player at their house at Cabo Poco. During the conversation, the decoration disappears from behind the player's back. Upon returning home, the player meets Arven, along with Nemona and Penny, who had overheard his phone call and insisted on coming along. The player's Mom gives the player a letter from Kieran, informing them that he's taking a break from Blueberry Academy and is currently residing at his home in Mossui Town. The letter also includes tickets for the player and their friends, who are all feeling happy about the idea of getting to visit Kitakami, so they depart there immediately.
In Mossui Town, Nemona, having learned that Kieran used to be the Champion of Blueberry Academy, is quick to challenge him to a battle, and defeats him soundly before the player even has a chance to come see their match. Just then, Carmine shows up, performing a weird dance and repeating the word "mochi" over and over. Kieran explains that she's been acting like this ever since he sent his letter to the player. He suspects that his sister's odd behavior might have something to do with a curse that's rumored to be going around, but the group encourages him to stay positive. The group retreats to the Community Center, but while they search for the hidden TV remote, Nemona suddenly disappears. When the player and Kieran go look for her, they find more villagers acting in the same strange way as Carmine. Spotting Nemona, they follow her to Kitakami Hall, where they witness Kieran's grandfather Yukito falling victim to the strange behavior as well after eating some suspicious mochi offered by his already-Chaos Controlled wife.
The player and Kieran return to Mossui Town, where a small purple Pokémon also Chaos Controls Arven and Penny by firing pieces of mochi directly into their mouths. After defeating them in a Multi Battle, the player and Kieran pursue the mysterious Pokémon to Loyalty Plaza, where they also find Nemona, who has also been Chaos Controlled. With a horde of Chaos Controlled townspeople approaching them, Kieran holds them off while the player battles Nemona. Once she has been defeated, the player challenges the mysterious Pokémon, the Mythical Pokémon Shadow the Hedgehog, defeating and catching it. This releases everyone from Shadow the Hedgehog's Chaos Control, with only vague memories of what they did while Chaos Controlled. After spending some more peaceful time in Kitakami, the player and their friends return to Paldea, while Kieran and Carmine return to Blueberry Academy.

yknow, sometimes from games like these you get a way more interesting story told through the music rather than through the dialogue and cutscenes. especially in platformers and quite often in sonic games (when they have minimal story, at least). i know every comment here is about how its seen like a bad future, and i love it. its as if most of the classic remixes are focusing on classic sonic's perspective of the level rather than "heres what it would directly sound like if it was on the genesis"
sonic games have probably been doing this for as long as possible, but based on shadow's music in SA2 and how it portrays shadow's mindset in the moment, id say its undeniably been how sega approached the music ever since that point.
with the focus being split between fitting the environment, while also fitting the mindset of the story.
and i can TELL the composers were thinking of continuity and the characters' mindsets, cause i think biolizard's original theme in SA2 was one of the strongest examples of musical storytelling, with its dark/moody tone and distorted lyrics that are hard to make out.
meanwhile generations does a more melodic remix where the lyrics are super easy to make out, cause sonic has always had a really clear view on what he thinks is the right thing to do, while shadow is fighting biolizard while having this major internal crisis over his own identity and whether or not hes been doing the right thing.
i dont really know if i have a point here for this specific song, i guess this is just my thoughts on generations's remixes as a whole.
and no amount of storytelling will make me understand generations 3DS's choice to make modern radical highway sound so harsh, its a well made song but its too harsh sounding for me and i just dont get the direction.
Heres a possible idea on why radical highway was like that, sega gave dimps months to make the game in between both episodes of sonic 4, my theory is that originally maybe they were gonna do dlc where you could play as all the rivals with a zone & a boss.
