Everyone, I wish you all the best wishes for 2021! Hopefully, this year will be (as Schopenhauer might have stated it) a bit less painful than 2020. But if that's not the case, we're at least given more opportunities to grow through adversity. In regards to this video, I must admit that there's much more to Schopenhauer's work that I'd like to cover and explore. It was quite difficult to cover his lessons on happiness in one video. If you're interested, I'd like to make more content about his philosophy (and my interpretations of it) in the near future. Just let me know!

A billionaire can use all kinds of technology and medical treatments to improve and prolong their life while poverty striken people might not even have access to drinkable water, let alone nutritious food.
It all sounds nice on paper. But it's way better to be both wealthy and healthy. You just have to not lose your head and use your wealth wisely. I guess many wealthy people feel miserable because some of them have not done anything to earn it, some have become wealthy at a very young age and some have traded success in all other areas of their life for wealth.
However, there's a bunch of people who still have managed to avoid these pitfalls and I'm sure they are wealthy, relatively healthy and satisfied with their lives.

Thank you so much for putting this together. I really needed to hear that at this point. Chasing unrealistic dreams for 30 years has given me so much pain because I believed I had failed. That I didn't fulfill my purpose. Yet, I have created my work, my novels, short films etc, so the work exists. Because it is not enjoyed by the masses is out of my control. I still do it because I like to create yet it can be so very frustrating when you cannot find a wide audience when you know the work is good. It's the very thing this video speaks of. I'm trying to find simple joys in reading, listening to music, watching films, and most of all, spending time with my daughter, who has given me real purpose. Without her, I don't believe I would be alive, because I didn't have my head straight. Lost in the idea of failure. And drinking too much. A deadly combination. I've decluttered my life. I try to live as simply as I can. Never been materialistic thankfully. But I still need this reminder though. My biggest battles are within my own head. Peace of mind is all I seek now. Instead of this desperate approach to relativize the horros of life, I prefer to look at them sober and thus come to the conclusion, that it is better not to have been born at all, no matter what more or less good things may have happened to you, it's still not worth all the trouble.

But I grew up I figured out that some things are unachievable from the situation I am in. Once I gave up to those idealistic thoughts and started to accept the reality as it is, I started being more calm and indifferent about stuff in general. It doesn't translate into me being happy but just trying to have peace of mind.

    Attitude makes all the difference!
I rent a house here in Dominica (Nature Island - not the same as the Dominican Republic). I will sell my house in NYC when I can. Then build something here with Wellness Clinic.
My life has radically changed since I arrived here early January 2020.
After arriving, I would sit on the 2nd floor porch, and look out at the mountains with the fading sun light. The colors in the sky are like nothing I have ever seen in this world... I truly lack the eloquence to express the beauty of it.
As the skies grew darker, the lights on mountain side homes began to twinkle. Clouds did inexplicable things and shined in marvelous changing colors as they rolled over the mountain tops.
Somehow in seeing all of this my mind was irrevocably altered. As I looked out I suddenly felt this enormous and vast distance between me, the valleys, the mountain tops, and the skies.... As I looked out and ‘felt’ this tremendous volume of distance - I felt smaller, and smaller... and smaller in the world. And as I shrunk, my problems shrunk with me. I felt I was a very small floating object in a great sea of beauty and mystery. I didn't have to worry any more. I simply had to hold-on and ride through this experience like a trip through a Disney World ride. No more effort - Just experience.
Many nights I sat out and looked over at the mountains as the sun set and stars lit up the night sky. And as I did this my internal perspective began to slowly change. Soon I began asking myself some stunning questions: Life will come to end for me some day, what will have been my purpose? Who am I living for?
It soon dawned on me that the purpose of my life should simply be to achieve joy, a sense of deep contentment and to express creative energy. But this kind of deep happiness could only be achieved internally. I can see how my past attempts to “prove” myself - to validate myself - in the eyes of others had been doomed to failure all along.
How had I gotten so ‘off-track’ in life: this belief that I must validate myself in the eyes of the world above all undertakings? It is because I had been taught over the years that success was measured in public fame and fortune. This is a consumer-driven society’s rubric. Everything we see and hear in this consumer driven life reinforces it.
Now aware, I set out to find “joy”. I prayed about it… and I meditated about it… Finally, some clarity was brought to me in an exquisite thought: “No one in this world is entitled to joy. If you want joy you create it!”
This was an electrifying thought: I needed to stop expecting anything good. Rather, I had to create it. I realized that “joy” was something I must manufacture every day.
Every day I wake up and cook breakfast while listening to the RUclips channel, “Goalcast”: one inspiring story after another. Then I pack my car and head down out of the mountain towards the capital. I must first drive through the village of Cochrane proper - Which is full of beautiful mountain people: people of the earth. As I drive down I can see ahead the many people outside there in the gardens, working, and so on. And being that this is Dominica, the topography forces everyone to be very close to the roadside.
Like daily clockwork, the villagers see me coming down the steep road; they know I am that nutty guy that wildly waves & shouts out silly life-affirmations as I drive by. Despite this, they forgive me and play along. It makes them smile, and smile more… And they give good vibrations back! With the help of these beautiful people, I create my joy!
It is only the beginning. Every day I pray for truth - despite the outcome, enlightenment, and change for the better. I had become so desperate I have willed myself an open mind to throw out any false ideas and to accept universal truths.
In the past I carried grandiose dreams of avarice and fame. I wish I could say I achieved it. But the truth is the opposite. And finally in the end, my health began to fail. I was dying on the outside and I could say that over time I had died inside - my purpose died.
The purpose of living: developing joy, deep contentment and expressing creativity.
Life in the Western world revolves around spread sheets: it serves the ‘bottom line’. There is no place in a spread sheet to account for ‘humanity’.
Back in NYC: Money has become the primary currency of ‘human value’. Good deeds, compassion & empathy and thoughtful exchanges for the benefits of others hold little value.
But here I live in the mountains on Nature Island. Every day I drive down the mountains to exercise in a gym. As I drive I try to take-in every ounce of the nature around me: the exploding flowers of the Flamboyant Trees, the many palm trees, flowing mango tees, prehistoric ferns whose leaves stretch 12 feet, cascading waterfalls, the magical mountain peaks that are draped with a curtain of enchanted cloud cover.
When I drive through the little hamlets the people wave and wish me a good morning; people in passing cars wave; and, the effervescent hitchhikers I pick up bring me great delight.
To me, THAT is real human value! There is meaning, happiness and joy!

There is literally a cool thing in the space in your mind you are aware of that you can stop from doing that. That thing is the only problem anyone could ever have. If you know your feelings are all good, then you feel so good your Level 1 of Life has been beaten.

I haven't heard of this guy until today. I was researching existential boredom and possible solutions because a few hours ago I was feeling particularly interested in looking into the worthlessness of living and came upon a book of his, which, in just a couple sentences, explained exactly what my thoughts were on the idea of a purpose to life. He's the closest I have to a twin in terms of philosophy. Fascinating.

It's simple, don't have kids and you won't pass on any misery. As one who has a learning disability I can only imagine how bad it would be for my own children if I had any.

I learned many valuable lessons from a Jewish Buddhist grandmother who was interviewed by Christa Tippett years ago. One suggestion was that when it came to handling a hurt child: 1st acknowledge, "You're hurt.", add "Take a deep breath." if necessary. 2nd ask, "What happened?" Listen. 3rd ask, What can be done?" Listen. 4th encourage, "Do it."
I find this useful for dealing with my inner child.

The problem here is that back in their time, kids did not have to go to school or could end school at middle school level and still get jobs. Nowadays, even people with no goals in life are forced in debt and 20 years of education for a minimum wage job. To justify putting their kids through this misery, parents will keep telling you that this will make you happy in the future. So by the time you are successful but still miserable that's when you wrap the rope around your neck.

I feel you... Our modern educational system is nothing but a tool for societal indoctrination - preparing the child not for a life of feeling, free thinking or creativity but simply for a life of work and drudgery... When put in charge of the educational system in our country, John Rockefeller was quoted as saying "I don't want a nation of thinkers - I want a nation of workers"

I think it's strange that we put so much value in pursuing happiness when it's not really a state you can live within and at best it's a fleeting thing. The more stable way of being is 'unhappiness' and living with that idea in mind really helps you to find peace in the world as it is. You can let go of the need for something so transient and perhaps even start to enjoy little things about daily life, if you're lucky enough go have some form of control over it. ✨

Even better video than I expected, it makes sense that reduction of pain by practicing moderation and striving to be responsible leads to a life with less suffering and therefore better than a life in which constantly seek out pleasure.
Basically never sacrifice moderation for a chance at extreme pleasure, as it will often disappoint or come at great cost.

pain can be positive or negative, there is also happiness. pain can break you, make you suffer, and want to end this life. while happiness can encourage you and give you spirit, and motivation to keep on living. Any pain and happiness that is based on reality is positive and the other way around is negative

Without emotions, how do you experience life in its fullness? You are specifically referring to negative emotions.
We live in duality. We need the contrast to know one from the other. The Yin and Yang of life
How do you see stars 🌟 if there is no nightfall? How do you know love? Until you experience the lack of it.
Without the full spectrum of negative and positive emotions, you cannot experience a full life.
