    I adorned my hair about three days of starting my loc journey, and I took them out a day later because I actually came to this revelation. I wasn't expecting this video to hit a point that I made myself and it makes me happy that I thought about it because the jewelry really would have affected my hair

    You can have loc jewelry on younger locs just make sure to remove them often and give you hair a chance to breathe. Like you shouldn’t keep them in that long that your hair starts to loc around it. I wash my hair every 1-2 weeks and thats when i remove ALL my loc jewelry. And as soon as the gold pieces tarnish, remove em.

    Thanks for the info!! A lot of people need to know these things. This is my first journey and I’ve done lengthy research before starting. I’m not too big on the idea of having loc jewelry. But when my locs are more mature I’d like to try out a few pieces. ❤️👏🏽

  • @SartoriallyBlack
    @SartoriallyBlack 4 года назад +34

    Yeah, Im too scared to do anything to my locs until they’re mature. I have 2 crystal coil pieces that I’ve had for a few months from Etsy, but I haven’t put them in yet. The most I do to my hair, accessories-wise, is put hair pins in-but I’m even particular about that. They’re all real gold.

    Hey Dae. I follow another loc RUclipsr that just started her locs over and in her 2nd or 3rd week she made a video about styles for starter locs and she included loc jewelry. The styles really did look cute but I also feel a way about using loc jewelry. I started my journey on April 5th and this other loc loc RUclipsr I watch made a video about the dangers of loc jewelry. I saw her video and she explained it so well now I see this video and you guys have similar points so I will avoid loc jewelry until mine mature. I was thinking of mentioning this to the RUclipsr that used jewelry on her locs but I feel like maybe that wouldn't be a good idea. She's on RUclips and I know she watches other videos because she once mentioned it so hopefully she comes across that one. Anyway thanks for reiterating that tip and I look forward to more videos. Take care

    I'm three years in with my semi free form locs. I had the little silver clips in and absolutely forgot about them. It's only this year I cut them out. There are indents in my locs but nothing severe or obvious. I really don't have damage to my hair. Just be mindful of what type of accessories you put in.

  • @sasham15
    @sasham15 4 года назад +11

    I totally agree. Wearing them on baby locs can keep the hair from budding and locking properly. My hair wasn’t even thick enough for the jewelry to actually stay until maybe 6 months in. 😂 I would say a good alternative is to put the jewelry on a hair tie or find a decorative headband. I’ve been locked 9 months now. I have just added a few sprinkles on the ends that are firm and round. I skipped over the ones where ends are curly, frizzy, or really soft. Locs definitely teach you patience. Great video!!

    Thanks for the info. Just a couple of weeks ago I had put a few shells and beads in my hair for the first time but I took them out when I washed my hair over the weekend. I don't think I'll be in a hurry to put them back in until my hair is more mature.

  • @oldmama8929

    My locs were 5 yo before I put anything in. Giving them time is hard but worth it. Also, being mindful of the weight is important. I recently took about half of my jewelry off as I was feeling the weight. I also trimmed 2-3 in off. Feels like heaven. I noticed immediately that the roots were no longer straining and they have grown thick again.

    Great video. Now that I have very minimal jewelry in my hair, I'm experiencing a lot less breakage. As one grows in one's journey, one definitely comes to realise that less jewelry and quality jewelry is far more worthwhile in the long run than a bunch of cheap clips and shells from your average vendor 😅

    Great advice, but perhaps each individual is different because I started wearing beads on the tips of my locs when I first got them and no damage. I still wear some African beads and a coil that I made and I've never had an issue, but I believe it's good advice because "better safe than sorry". Mine are over 5 years now so they tell me what to do😅

    I love loc jewelry! I have all kinds of things in my hair. But one of my favorite things to put in my hair is cell phone charms. They tend to be cute and on thread instead of rubber bands. I just wrap it around my locs and I think they do less damage.

    I have mature locs now; they matured pretty quickly, in about 6-9 months because I freeformed and washed my hair every other day for scalp health purposes. (Washing frequently helps them loc faster, but they won’t be uniform like traditional locs… they’ll be based on your curl pattern. I have all the type 4 coils, and my locs are between small & medium sized. I started from a twa, but if you freeform from longer hair, your locs tend to be chunkier). I digress.
    I’m waiting for loc jewelry until mine are shoulder-length when dry; right bow, they’re jaw length. I guess it’s a good thing I decided to wait because I had the time to look up hair care tips about loc jewelry! Thanks for the good info; I was wondering if I should take them out when I wash, and it sounds like the answer should be yes, or at longest, after a week (since I wash my hair 2x per week now).

    100%, thank you for this! A rule of thumb I learned early on was, only put in things you can take out every time you wash, especially so any beads etc don't get in the way of your hair drying fully... Also, if you have things you really love to wear, rotate them around so they are not always in the same place, so hair gets a break.

    Jewelry kinda messed up my locs. I needed my beads and others to be kinda tight so they wouldn’t slip off. But what happened was it created thin bands around a the area and over time it weakened and fell off. So I don’t wear long term jewelry anymore but one thing about locs you retain so much more length so it’s back the same length in no time

My locs are lumpy now because they formed around some of the jewelry. Thankfully, I like that wild & non uniformed loc look so I don’t mind it. But yes please wait till your loc forms to play with loc jewelry.

    Great video! I didn't wear loc jewelry throughout my first 12 year loc journey. This journey I love it! However, I didn't start wearing loc jewelry until I was a little over 1 year loc'd. When I do wear it, I never wear it for more than 3 days. And I'm very gentle pulling out loc jewelry from my locs. I also won't wash my hair with the jewelry in.
    Also you could buy jewelry that you can't use (ask me how I know 🙃), like a cuff, because you estimated the jewelry size and your locs could end up skinnier or thicker than you thought once they mature.
    I get my jewelry from Smileywitdalocs (youtuber) and Tiffany's Loc Jewels.
