I'm blessed to own a gorgeous Cowrie shell necklace. One big Cowrie shell surrounded by about 2 dozen smaller ones. It was made for me by an old Rasta in Jamaica back in the late 80's. I treasure it!!!! And for decades ppl have asked to buy it from me.
I was always drawn to cowries ever since my grandma put them with my braids and beads. I like to think I was subconsciously drawn to them bc if it’s African richness ✨
my mom started her loc journey a year before mine and she has a few in her hair now and she told me its common for people to add it in their locs after each year as like a symbol of how long its been. but i had no idea about all of its history like this. great video! thank you for sharing :)
I’m a male but I was drawn to them because im deep into my African heritage I’m spiritual and I view them as protection because they protect whatever sea animal used it I view them as prosperity because they was used as currency and I just like them 😂🥰
They are unisex I'm male and I have them on. They are man's gift from the water deity so how can they not be spiritual. I'd like to shout out man all the way from South Africa
There’s a woman at work that wears her hair with shells just like solange . I can’t tell if they are braids or locs cause her hair is FULLY covered with them . People talk about her all the time .
I went to buy some for my hair aa fashion. But the Holy Spirit told me not to buy those shells or other hair jewelry. That just happened today to me. I jump online to research and boom. He made his point. Thank you Lord
Im going to say it...Why does so many viewers feel the need to correct her pronunciation ? Tomato to tomoto ?(Yall know what she mean.) Anyway Thanks for the video🙂
@@sistahoodcafe because she's saying it wrong. There are some words that have more than one way to pronounce them. So your tomato tomato example is not good. If there's only 1 way to say a word, and you say it another way, then you're mispronouncing it and need to be corrected.
why i was younger my family use to tell me people wore shells because it's a African thing i didn't really believe think it was that and wanted answers
I have locs and I will get cowry in them when they get longer. The information about the history was good except the part about Yoruba people. Most of the stuff you said was accurate but the internet isn’t very accurate when it comes to African ethnic groups. There are no Yoruba in Ghana other than Nigerians who moved here. If you have any Nigerian friends they’ll be more than happy to give more accurate information on the Orishas( pronunciation) and Orissa . All the same this video was still very informative 👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾

In Ghana cowries use to be money before the ships landed.
In Nigeria also
She said that!😉👊🏾
I just found out I’m Ghanian this is so awesome to learn!
Also In Sierra Leone
Same with Nigeria

Thats really nice of you Joshua!
From a native speaker of Yoruba, It’s pronounced “Orisha” not “Orisa”.
I love cowrie shells. I first heard of them from the American Girl books-Addy series.
OMG! Sis you took me back my youth with the Addy series. 😍
Memories are wonderful
Sameeeeee
I love braiding my daughters' hair with cowrie shells it looks so regal and instills self confidence. I recommend it for every mother.
We still subconsciously do this! We use plastic beads in little girls hair.
Except we replaced nature for plastic.

Yoruba pronounced: yo (as in yoyo) ru (as in the ro sound in "row") ba (as in the ba sound in "bath")

A good way to respect the history is by also pronouncing the terms correctly
@@elsawanlemvo Sure Ok
