I was 14 when i got this record and my life was never the same. This track epitomized a sense of wonder, possibility, joy and awe that to this day I cannot really put into words. I am so glad I grew up at a time to have had hero's like this.
At 00:52 to 1:15, those chord changes Alex came up with are from another planet, the guitar effects he used in the recording of this particular live version of By-tor have never been duplicated. He brought out sounds I've never heard from anyone else. And he never played it this same way any other time that I know of. Thankfully we do have it once.
AHHHH...Lifeson's original answer to Jimmy Page's "bow/guitar" atmosphere/swells!! Personally I'd take this over Dazed & Confused ANYDAY!!! Go KING LERXST and RUUUUUSSSHH!!!!!! \m/ \m/ \m/ \m/ \m/
By far the best. I saw them a couple years after this. Alex was still doin the spacey stuff.. This experiance made my mind up to do my guitarring. . .I sought to do all that spacey stuff and when I found I could I was off!! Thnaks to Alex for inspising me!! Yeah, this is the best version of this song. . .they were in their own backyard. . .every garage band around Toronto dreams of playing massey hall. .
Sitting here listening to this with my headphones on, which is IMO the best way to listen to it. ATWAS is the album that sold me on RUSH. This takes me back over 32 years ago, stationed in Germany. We would listen to this while after fire brewing some of Germany's finest. Awesome...
The best live album with Geddy at his best vocally. All three played with extreme intensity. This album was my first exposure to RUSH in 1977 and like most.....i was blown away and they still blow me away today!
Saw these guys do this on the 2112 tour. They were with UFO and Artful Dodger. 1976 or 77. I'd ever seen anything like it. They completely transported you to a carefully crafted sonic universe of their own making. If I hadn't seen it done I might've never believed just how badass these guys really are. I was fortunate, indeed.
i owned this album when i was about 17 or 18... part of my artistic and personal maturation process. i've followed the band off and on since, but rush gave me a lifetime of musical memories in a very short period of time back then. nice that you could post this, and more...praise be to the internet :-)
I WORE THIS RECORD OUT! Literally! I got it when I was 18, and by my 20th birthday it just didn't work anymore...weren't enough grooves left on it for the needle to hold! Brilliant work mastering this version...sounds incredible!
@stratovani . .on a simply technical basis, he's using somewhere between a third and a half second delay; quite a bit of repetitions and a very slow decay. . . on a spiritual basis, its not the car its the driver .. Rush was my first concert and when I saw then they were still doing this whole thing .. seeing Alex do this live really inspired me to seriously play guitar . .
Had to go to Zep'77 in Seatle with my parents.....................not a bad thing. But that Rush show was beyond human. The mushrooms didn't hurt..................I am from Oregon after all.
:53 to 3:20 is probably the best thing Alex ever did...it was the perfect combination of out of this world delay effect and Marshall-Gibson power...thanks so much for posting!
So awesome. I actually saw this concert in Massey so many years ago and it sounded like you all hear. It was always a blast to see Rush and Max Webster at Maple Leaf Gardens on New Years. Merry Christmas to all!!!
Man oh man do I love Geddy Lee's tone. He gets that Pick type of tone, but using his fingers! I've always wanted to hear this album on here, but could never find it. I thought the sound was going to be to cheap or something because no one ever mentions this live album just the Exit Stage Left. But I was wrong...as long as I can hear Geddy's awesome bass, I love it! Thanks!
the incredible melodic gushing power chord part at 2:54 - 3:15 is so much more intense than the studio album.....................loved-d-d-d- this so-o-o-o much! I always wished it could have gone on an on............
Thanks for uploading this gem. It would be awesome if it were uninterrupted. Some of us older fans have literally been through the long, twisted, unpredictable evolution of Rush. I love songs from every phase they went through. This version of By-Tor is definitely my favorite song from their "epic" phase.
Alex played with the violin bow at this show, which was in Toronto....I saw Rush every time they played NY from Caress of Steel to Moving Pictures and I never saw Alex play with the bow. My loss.
i've got to tell you, RUSH never lost it, all phases of their career are great, POWER WINDOWS is an awesome album; i think their goal is to grow and to reflect changes in music and to do things in their own way at the same time. they can't keep on doing the same thing for over 30 years. it won't work.
Man, what Alex did with a delay back then was beyond belief...and then at 3:00 you hear the full power of Gibson and Marshall combined. Those were the days....
My mom gave me her copy of this on Vynal. She said she wasnt realy into that stuff in the day but kept it cuase a freind gave it to her. She passed it on to me and I realy like it. Guilty pleasure i guess
@careing57587 Yeah .. hearing this .. and this is the ULTIMATE in how a guitar can sound .. but hearuing that made me want to do it. When I could go in and jam and get stuff like this, I knew I was ready . .lol .. thank you Alex for doing this cool-ass-shit and inspiring my career!
wow, sooooo spacey and cool sounding. to do this i have to have 3 delay pedals lined up, but it sounds soo cool. its nice sounding if u use the volume pedal!!
How the hell does Alex do this solo? Maybe with TWO Echoplexes? I've been wondering this since 1976! Maybe if I get lucky enough to meet Alex I'll ask him.
Glaciated sound, Reminds me of mile sheets of ice' lol Alex comes in,''chords that sculpt sonic sounds of marvles once possesed, remained as batted monuments,'' Then Alex wipes the earth clean from all rubble, blasting it off into the heavens,' From what man once deeded himself, This is Rush
Yeah this live version, is the best one i know of? Its like does alex lifeson and the band) play the parts all the way through anymore? I could be wrong, but i think they cutt all the good stuff out of this song, ever since moving pictures tour,'' I don't understand why the 80s and after, became less and less epic
Rush is in a class all there own noone can touch them talented at every position. I introduced my boyz to rush and they play now in a band and are awesome. Angels masqerade check them out on myspace not bad for a couple of kids
My favorite band that I grew up on. Sadly - and I agree with the previous poster 100% - they were brilliant and now are just a very boring band. I have NEVER understood why they gave up on their incredible style of unique sings with kick-butt solos. No they just churn out boring albums. The brilliant solos and complex epic overtures are GONE. Alex is lucky if he gets in an average, dull 10-second average riff on occasion. So sad - but true. However I will never forget them as they "were".
Hey bone heads, Jimmy Page and Alex Lifeson are both very gifted creative people. They play for the song and solo with incredible style. Anyone who doubts this or compares one to the other is stupid.
No, I won't ever go as far as to say that Jimmy Page was garbage... Led Zeppelin were also in a class of their own however saying that... You are talking about 2 icons in the industry. Hey Class of 75 here baby so I know what I am talking about. They are each in a class of their own. If anyone ever gets go Vegas... Make sure you get to the Boulder Station on a Saturday night to see the band "Yellow Brick Road" When they do RUSH... They do them right!
I get chills down my spine listening to this....thank you Rush for creating this masterpiece. x

when i used to close this double album,it would crunch, cause all the seeds and stems in the middle
😀
The solo section never fails to give me goosebumps.
Alex' use of a volume pedal and echo here is beyond brilliant.
RedElephantStampede - yes, indeed....been a fan since their inception.
Many years ago I would have guessed a klemt echolette in use too. Genius either way. Mid 70's. Would love to ask Alex.
AHHHH...Lifeson's original answer to Jimmy Page's "bow/guitar" atmosphere/swells!!
Personally I'd take this over Dazed & Confused ANYDAY!!!
Go KING LERXST and RUUUUUSSSHH!!!!!! \m/ \m/ \m/ \m/ \m/
So lucky to have found them in 77, only missed 3 yrs of greatness
By far the best. I saw them a couple years after this. Alex was still doin the spacey stuff.. This experiance made my mind up to do my guitarring. . .I sought to do all that spacey stuff and when I found I could I was off!! Thnaks to Alex for inspising me!!

Saw Rush in Stafford Bingley Hall when I was 17 (1981) on mushrooms. Thought they were on stage performing for me only.
Not heard this version for about 20 odd years, listened to it BAM same goose pimples every time
Nice to see im not only one that was floored by this song...it sounds better and better to me as the years go by.
The best live album with Geddy at his best vocally. All three played with extreme intensity. This album was my first exposure to RUSH in 1977 and like most.....i was blown away and they still blow me away today!
Great time to be growing up. I was only 6 when FTK came out. I missed out some.
I'm 46. I agree; we were truly blessed
Probably my fav lifeson solo! Gawd it just melts your face!!!! 😆🥴
Best group I ever seen
Saw these guys do this on the 2112 tour. They were with UFO and Artful Dodger. 1976 or 77. I'd ever seen anything like it. I played this album ever day for about 2 years on it's release.
I was there for the first and second show.
i owned this album when i was about 17 or 18...

I have this on Vinyl but it's knackered now as I played it sooooooo much over the years
Been a long time since I've enjoyed this...sweet music to my ears.
Damn. 3 guys and doing it all.
Had to go to Zep'77 in Seatle with my parents.....................not a bad thing. But that Rush show was beyond human. The mushrooms didn't hurt..................I am from Oregon after all.

@careing57587 seeing him do this in concert in 1977 .. yeah the 'spacey bit' . . was one of the things that did it for me ..
Great band

This performance makes me feel really sorry for people who just don't "get" RUSH!
Oh well, more for me!!
Thanks for uploading this gem. It would be awesome if it were uninterrupted. Some of us older fans have literally been through the long, twisted, unpredictable evolution of Rush. Geddy Lee is the most under-rated bassest ever. His bass is amazing.
@careing57587 I'd say it's one of his best of the early stuff. The mood he creates in this section is intense.
What an awesome buzz inducer
this is intoxicating
My mom gave me her copy of this on Vynal. She said she wasnt realy into that stuff in the day but kept it cuase a freind gave it to her. She passed it on to me and I realy like it. Guilty pleasure i guess
Ditto!! Religon to me... I was 14 when it hit the stores
@careing57587 Yeah .. hearing this .. and this is the ULTIMATE in how a guitar can sound .. but hearuing that made me want to do it. When I could go in and jam and get stuff like this, I knew I was ready . .lol .. thank you Alex for doing this cool-ass-shit and inspiring my career!
best live album ever
so true- if they kept trying to have the same sound and type of songs from the 70s'a they would not be around today or even in the 90's-
Long live the professor RIP
Alex absolutely was the first guy to use the volume pedal as an instrument.
wow, sooooo spacey and cool sounding. to do this i have to have 3 delay pedals lined up, but it sounds soo cool. its nice sounding if u use the volume pedal!!
Lerxst lifeson simply kicks ass here! 😤👍
@Rushguitarist1 in 1976? page was doin it 7 years earlier
Hearing this middle section, I"m convinced, beyond the shadow of a doubt that Alex is on par with Jimmy Page in every aspect that I can think of.
My thoughts exactly!
How the hell does Alex do this solo? Maybe with TWO Echoplexes? I've been wondering this since 1976! Maybe if I get lucky enough to meet Alex I'll ask him.
i dont know what your talking about, i just remember this song having a bass solo in it
Glaciated sound, Reminds me of mile sheets of ice' lol Alex comes in,''chords that sculpt sonic sounds of marvles once possesed, remained as batted monuments,'' Then Alex wipes the earth clean from all rubble, blasting it off into the heavens,' From what man once deeded himself, This is Rush

Sorry but you really are clueless
CaseModVideos , that's why you gotta "imho" only listen to what you like...don't listen to what you don't like...no disrespect to any Rush fans...
sorry i meant to reply to michaelbillypec's comment
made a mistake
Hey bone heads, Jimmy Page and Alex Lifeson are both very gifted creative people. They play for the song and solo with incredible style. Anyone who doubts this or compares one to the other is stupid.
i thought this song had a bass solo in it
Thanks, sounds like the are inspired by Led Zeppelins Dazed and Confused, anyway this version is great
Cant DENY it!
1:00 - 1:32...You're welcome Mr. Van Halen ..there's your material/inspiration for "Cathedral"
Lifeson :::King Lerxst::::

Comparing Zepplin to Rush...wtf?...Rush is as good as they get ..I love Rush!....but Zepplin and Floyd are the best we might ever hear!
