Me too, living in London Ontario, halfway between Detroit and Toronto. Since I moved there from Vancouver and hated it, no way was I going to be a Blue Jays fan. I jumped on the bandwagon during the Roar of '84 and haven't taken a Tiger hat off my head since. Go Tigers!
Man I was 7 nearing the end of 2nd grade on Detroit's Eastside when this aired. I remember "Tigers 84" and the intro theme music with Eli Zaret's voice.
I was torn from Ernie, George, and Al at 8 when my parents moved to Florida a month before the Tigers won it all. The last voice of summer of my youth passed today. RIP Al.
One of my fondest memories from childhood...returning home at night from dinner out with my mom and dad in our 1974 Dodge Monaco, I’m eight or nine years old and lying in the back seat listening to Ernie and Paul call the action on AM radio 590 WKZO Kalamazoo. It didn’t matter much how far away we were from Kzoo...after the sun went down, AM stations from far, far away tuned in perfectly thanks to clear-channel skywave propagation. I miss those days, I miss my ma and pa. ❤️
There was no doubt the Tigers were the best team in baseball in 1984. If they didn't win the World Series that year it would have been a HUGE dissapointment. But thankfully the Tigers did win the 1984 World Series so we don't have to think about that.
It's a warm, gorgeous summer day in the late 80s or early 90s. The wind is lightly blowing the curtains in the living room. The grass is a little greener, the sky is a little bluer. I don't have a care in the world as a young child. I'm on one couch, my dad is on the other. We have the TV tuned to channel 4. The voices of Kell and Kaline will always remind me of that summer day back then.
Love George and Ernie, they started out together but somewhere along the way George went to TV and Ernie stayed on the radio. Perfect. I have been playing the Tigers out on Strat-o-Matic baseball and they are doing very well.
"Ethel Merman jams MSP airport radar with national anthem..." The great baseball voices from my youth. One of my favorite George Kell calls (also from '84 against the Twins): "They called Gibby safe! And we're gonna have a rhubarb!"
RIP George Kell. I was 4 years old and in the summer of 1984 began my lifelong love affair with the game of baseball. I knew every player on that star-studded team but for some strange reason Johnny Grubb was my favorite player...ha. Good times!
There was nobody like Ernie Harwell ,George Kell ,Al Kaline, Larry Osterman, Van Patrick,Ray lane, Bob ReynoldsWe had the best announcers in Detroit on a hot summer day listening to them all as a kid
It's amazing to hear that they had concerns coming out of spring training, particularly in pitching. Their pitching turned out to be great, and it stayed great for several years.
- Little did they know that their win on Opening Day in Minneapolis would only be the beginning of what would turn out to be such a dominant season in '84.

I remember this day like it was yesterday. I was 18. Earlier that afternoon, I was thrown from a rolling car when my sober friend took a curve too fast, drifted to the right shoulder, overcorrected, spun out and proceeded to roll three times. Eight broken bones and internal bruising. Never lost consciousness. I got to watch Jack Morris pitch his no hitter that Saturday from my hospital room. I viewed the Tigers finally winning the WS that year as a reward for surviving the crash. Today my back is hurting where I broke 3 vertebrae. It pretty much does every day. I didn't get to watch this game.
Kell and Kaline were awesome announcing team and it brings back memories. Eli Zaret sucked. I guess there was a story Zaret wanted to do the play by play and showed up unexpectedly at the announcing booth to the surprise of the George and Al. They kicked Zaret out of the booth.
Was that Roseanne Barr doing the Anthem? Wow...lol George and Al on TV with Paul and Ernie on the radio...best broadcasting team ever. I really miss those days!
He made telling remarks at the end of their conversation, saying at 4:18 that the Twins were a franchise with potential. They sure spoiled Detroit's 1987 party after the Eastern Division title race. Just before that, Al had said that Minnesota was poised to pull its franchise up and leave the Twin Cities. 35 years later, uhhh, nah.
I was 13 that year. God this stuff really brings it all back. God bless George Kell

Thanks Larry and good evening everybody

I grew up listening to these two calling Tiger games on TV, and Ernie Harwell & Paul Carey on the radio. What a time to hear a ballgame!
Thank you, TV Detroit for this clip! It was certainly a great year for Tigers' TV highlights! George and Al, too ... what a blessing! More, more!!

The beginning of the 35-5 start. Unthinkable today.
16-1 on the way to 35-5.

@@MrT8599 Yes, not winning the WS would have been a major let down that year.

One of my favorite records I love to cite to folks. Helluva start.

Al nailed it at the 1:47 mark when he said, "I think they are ready to have a big year."
RIP George and Al. Thank you for all the wonderful memories. Bless you boys!
R.I.P. to the greatest broadcast duo Ever.
Hellooo again everyone!
Oh the good ol days of baseball, hot dogs, apple pie and Chevrolet...when America was America!
Gosh, I'm getting a little emotional listening to George and Al for the first time in about thirty years.
It does not seem possible that Al is gone.Maybe we just thought he would be here forever. I don't remember the Tigers without Al. .
I miss George and Al.
They were a great crew up in the TV booth. It has been very hard to replace them . How often do you ever get to HOF members working a game ?
Brings me back to when I was 8 years old when my dad had them on..I became a tigers fan at the right time
George Kell & Al Kaline on the Tigers television network.
The first game of the season of dreams!
A starting season win record that will never be beat, EVER!!
They ended up with a 104W-58L record and their most recent World Series title to date!

Johnny Grubb was an All-Star, a good ballplayer and a great human being. Excellent choice for your favorite player
Oh yeah I did always like Grubb a very dependable and versatile player one of the best team mate's and role players in the big leagues.
The voices of the baseball of my childhood. Thanks for posting

Drove 360 miles from NMU in Marquette to see that game. And drove back in time for classes the next day.
Knew it was going to be a great year.
Julia Child did the anthem?
RIP: Mr Kaline. You and George can now call games in the Great Wide Open.
He hit it a miile ! but straight to the center fielder..
Wayyyyy back, could be, and this ball is gone! He hit a mile!
Here's a base hit up the middle that'll score a run
There's a long fly ball down the left field line ... could be fair, could be foul ... ... it is!
I loved the voice of George Kell.Ge orge had that southern draw voice that was just one of a kind.

OMG GOOSE BUMPS
The Eli Zaret intro to George and Al. Would love to hear the rest of the Al Williams story.
You’re so right Al!
This was a broadcast team we will never see again .Not flashy but accurate in their own way.
I had no idea the Twins were thinking of leaving Minnesota back then. In 2020 they are still there.
And the stadium was only 2 years old!
Requiesce in pace, Al.

"Just another ball game." If they only knew.
Miss them both 🙏🐯⚾

He might be gonna make a pitching change Al.
Still can here George saying "Oh he it a mile" or I had coffee with Sparky at the Hoe-Till"

OK, quick quiz ... who were the five sponsors of the broadcast, and who was the local sports journalist who introduced them?
Miller Lite, Chevrolet, McDonald's. Highland Appliance, New York Carpet World (Those two are no longer in business.)
And sportscaster Eli Zaret.
Did not play well in spring training...goes on to win 84 world series
That team should have won more 87,88,89 were disappointing seasons where they collapsed down the stretch.
Boys of summer
I was 2 to three years old dont remember this.
How many broadcast teams have been made up of two HOF baseball players? These two are the only duo I am aware of.
You are probably right. I think that there may have been two in a three man booth, but that doesn't count ;-)
Call me crazy but I always liked Kell a little better than Harwell. Both are legends
