Don’t TURN Your Hips in the Downswing - Every Golfer Needs to See This!

  • Most golfers turn their hips in the downswing, but this actually can ruin the golf swing and cause tons of problems. Your hips are a huge part of the golf swing and they can be the difference between you hitting a good shot or a bad shot. If you know how to use your hips correctly like in this golf tip, you can swing easier and hit the ball farther.
    When looking at the downswing, a lot of amateur golfers make the mistake of turning their hips too soon. Turning your hips too early in the downswing causes you to lose power before hitting the ball. It can also cause you to hit inconsistent golf shots.
    The pros delay their hips in the downswing so that they can store up more power for impact - the moment they need power the most. So while most golfers “throw away” their power early, the pros store up their power for much later in the golf swing.
    Don’t turn your hips in the downswing….WAIT, and then unleash a tremendous amount of power into the ball using your hips correctly.

Whether you are a seasoned golfing veteran looking for a quick swing tune-up after an on-course emergency, or a beginner just looking to get the most out of your golfing experience, I am here to help you achieve your golfing goals.
    My mission as your swing doctor is simple, to help you maximize your enjoyment in game of golf. Because, let’s face it, golf is a hard game.
    My philosophy is wholly based on the student having a fun, meaningful experience in a frustrating and complicated game where potential lifelong golfers either quit because it is too difficult or that they experience some form of swing-related pain or discomfort. I mitigate these problems by focusing entirely on the student’s needs and goals while teaching a golf swing method that ultimately takes stress off of the common pain areas of the swing.

    Thanks for the video. I was alway frustrated with the traditional golf lessons. I used to be able to hit the ball very well in my youth but grew a lot and clubs no longer fit. I developed a bad over the top swing that I could not fix.
    I could never swing freely with traditional instruction when I tried to learn golf again. I was ignorant of the stack and tilt method and thought it was another gimmick until I saw some good RUclipsrs speak positively about it. I tried some of the techniques and suddenly began to swing easier and striking the ball much more solid. No more overly complicated swing with wrist twisting to keep the club face closed.
    I’m looking forward to hitting fewer bad shots and better longer shots.

    Love your videos, trying to simplify things. Keep it up. One thing - I’ve always heard about the “hip bump,” but it never made much sense. It seems like it’s a secondary effect to either (1) shifting weight of lower body forward from back foot to front foot (though I know u recommend having weight on front leg primarily throughout swing) or (2) pushing off ground w left foot). I’m a bit confused. If u have time, please clarify. Thx so much!

    • @SagutoGolf
      @SagutoGolf  2 года назад +1

      I'm glad you're enjoying my content!
      You start with your weight forward (55/45 for the short and mid irons; 60/40 for the longer clubs), increase that same weight forward to the top of the backswing (70/30), and further increase the forward weight during the downswing from halfway down (80/20) through impact (90/10) and to the finish at 95/5 forward. The upper torso/head - and thus the swing center - remains in place during the increasing forward weight load in the downswing. This enables the golfer to "clear" while keeping the club moving on the proper in-to-out path. There's no shifting back and forth, and the result is a centered, low-maintenance, body-friendly, consistent, and tremendously powerful swing.
      By the way, here's a link to my FREE mini-course “The Top 3 Things You Need to Be a Great Ball Striker” in case you’re interested in learning about the swing system I teach in a more structured manner: go.saguto.golf/

    This is hands down the best tip EVER on RUclips!! Thank you Tom! As I already mentioned in other comments since I follow your channel and Golf Tips my HCP dropped a lot and this tip is just the best I have seen for like ages. This is the motion which was missing in my swing. I always started my downsing with Hip Rotation and got stuck or oversliced in my miss. I did your movement (push your left pocket forward and turn your hips after that) every day for like 5 to 10 min for one week at home. First it feels super strange but after 2 or 3 times trying it you can just feel that it is a complete GAME CHANGER!! It is so much more effortless and much more power.
    I went on the course one week later and in the warm up I could already feel a massive difference in ball flight and power. Really nice straight flight or little baby draw. superb. Driver and Hybrid were much more controlled and I crushed my irons! it felt like pure butter. Went out on the course and shot a 77 (I am a HCP 10.8) and I could not be happier! thanks Mr Saguto for your great videos!

    My feel is that I'm pushing my left leg into the ground to start my downswing. This allows my weight to move forward and my arms to simply drop into position, keeping my right shoulder in as well as opposed to coming over the top. All the above is a result of me pushing that left leg into the ground causing my hips to move forward. Thanks for another great lesson.

      That is correct, Robert. The technical golf term is "disassociation. It means that as the lower body is moving targetward the upper torso is remaining in place laterally to preserve the swing center and low point.

    Man! I recorded myself at the range and noticed that my hips were moving early. I was trying to work on compressing the golf ball and pushing my left hip back on the downswing. I was really struggling with hitting it fat. Then I found this video. CHANGED MY GOLF GAME. Just focusing on bumping my hips to the target on the downsing instead of trying to rotate them, completely changed my striking. I am now compressing the ball and taking a divot after the ball. It is such an addicting feeling. Thank you so much. My drives have improved too. I'm hitting nice draws.

      Welcome aboard, Reed - I'm very glad to have you in the school!!
      Here's some preliminary advice to help you get off to a good start on your journey to the Land of Ball Striking Bliss:
      1) Regardless of a member's skill level, this swing necessitates a complete reboot for someone transitioning from a shift & lift swing (which is typically the case), and therefore it is imperative that one take sufficient time to ensure that the fundamental components are mastered. From the ground up there is nothing superfluous in the Stack & Tilt swing - in other words, everything with a purpose, and a purpose for everything. (For example, contrary to shift & lift where you may be taught to keep your trail foot perpendicular to the target line as a means of "creating resistance" in your trail side, in S&T we flare both feet out 10-20 degrees in order to facilitate a free flowing, inclined hip and shoulder turn.) I cannot emphasize this enough, as frustrations predominantly occur when students jump ahead in the curriculum without properly dedicating themselves to the foundational base upon which our consistently repeatable, powerful, low maintenance swing must be built. Chapter 1 of the Golf Swing Simplified program (GSS) and Part I of Get Out & Go Play (GOGP) both address this.
      2a) GSS: One of the many great things about this swing is that you can achieve solid ball striking even at the most basic levels. This is why I oftentimes will suggest that students park themselves on Chapter 2 of the GSS course for an extended period of time after locking down Chapter 1's foundational elements. Chapter 2 reinforces the body motions and the weight-forward component, and it culminates with what I call "The Best Golf Swing Practice Drill of All Time". Work yourself sequentially and gradually through the chapter, and then commit yourself to that drill in Lesson 2.8. Learn it. Practice it. Master it. You can even use this partially abbreviated swing on the course and play quite well with it as it will provide plenty of distance. (It actually is the full swing minus just a couple of power accumulators.) Once you've got that down, you will be well prepared to move forward in the curriculum and well on your way towards taking ownership of YOUR swing!
      2b) GOGP: This quick-start program is exactly as it sounds - it is designed to fast-track you out onto the course so you can have fun - and success - playing as you learn! Should you choose this path, everything in #1 above still applies, and as implied above in 2a you will still want to work through it sequentially and gradually, mastering each lesson before moving ahead to the next one. In this program, Drill #5 - The Flying Wedge is the one you'll want to park yourself on and nail down.
      3) Also, as you progress always keep in mind the V1 Swing Video Analysis service, an effective and inexpensive service that I highly recommend to everyone in the school. I liken it to bringing your swing into the shop for a tune-up or minor repair. Scheduling one on a quarterly basis for preventive maintenance will do wonders for keeping things humming along nicely, and it's also a great tool for pinpointing and resolving any issues that arise. The process involves downloading the free V1 app and then submitting two videos to me through the app - one down-the-line (captured from your stance line, not the target line) and the other face-on. You'll find more information about the V1 Analysis halfway down this page on the Saguto.Golf site: saguto.golf/p/sagutogolf
      4) Finally, please migrate over to the SagutoGolf Community Forum - which is included in your online school membership - and begin engaging with your fellow members. It only takes a minute or two to enroll - just go to your “My Courses” screen and you’ll see a link to get started. Once signed in you’ll be able to access and participate in the great dialogue that we are having on a variety of topics. You can start discussions, contribute to existing threads, post specific swing questions, make some new friends, and just share in the common bond of golfers from around the world seeking to improve their games and help others to do the same. I monitor the forum regularly and participate in the discussions, including assisting with swing-related inquiries. I really think you’ll enjoy it!
      I look forward to hearing from you regularly in the Forum and to assisting you in building a consistent, low maintenance, powerful, body-friendly swing that will bring your enjoyment of this great game to a new level!

    So, holding hips back...? This means, 90 % of the yt golf videos are WRONG, because all they just talkin "turn your hip" but there is a little, but important difference. What you mean is more "sway" ?? Wrong hip turn early will ruin your swing! That the fact! I will try to avoid this.

      LOL!! Indeed I AM the Danger Zone. The dark side of golf. Evil swing sorcery. The cult that is quietly, surreptitiously gathering lost swings from the vast purgatorial abyss of failed "conventional" instruction and leading them to the way and the truth of a method rooted in the unchanging principles of physics and geometry. Creating heinously horrifying creatures of repeatability, predictable ball flight, and effortless power. Like a hideous and unstoppable amoeba slowly yet steadily consuming the golfing globe. Resistance is futile; you will be assimilated. Mwahahaha.....Mwahahahaha..... 😎
      Yes - The lateral targetward action of the hips acts as a governor to prevent a premature over-rotation and thereby enables the player to keep his upper torso square without having to fight their body. Most amateur golfers already have plenty of the rotational component; they need to build in the lateral hip slide to suppress the early-onset spinout that causes so many to get steep and across the line. Here is another lesson video specific to this topic: ruclips.net/video/I5XYgKopTb4/видео.html

    ok - I get it now. I want to attack that ball from the top with my club. Push hips toward target and the turn will whip into the ball. It feels weird and not something I want to think of when I play. I suppose it will take time.

    • @SagutoGolf
      @SagutoGolf  11 месяцев назад

      Weird is good when we're trying to incorporate the necessary changes in the spirit of improvement. The “ghosts of swings past” do not disappear on their own, and if you are transitioning from a swing method that involved shifting weight into your trail side and/or lifting the club with your hands, those demons are going to take some time to exorcise! But as the crispiness builds in the weirdness tends to dissipate.
      Be patient and embrace the challenge!

    Totally nailed my problem and many others ..by mistake first thinking of turning the hips first which then will make you come over the top, weight is not forward and hitting fat/flipping club in turn raising the back angle too soon at impact. So keeping the hips quiet but first shifting hips to the left, now club is lined right, turning upper body now hips, hands in front at impact without raising your back angle and not hitting fat or flipping the club.....Great video, thx !!

    Tom, your formula for instruction::
    Teaching the core concept and golf move immediately! Then spend the other 8 minutes reinforcing, give a drill, demonstrate.
    So so many teachers would benefit from using this method.

    When I first used your swing on the course I was pushing a lot to the right. I realized that I was NOT letting my hips release at the end (probably due to tension/anxiety). Figured that out about 1/2 way through and then I was whacking some beautiful shots straight down the pipe. My point is, people also need to be aware that if you are pushing your shots it COULD be that you are tense and not letting your hips release SOON ENOUGH after starting out moving your hips to the target. Your videos on wrist loading and unloading and having a short backswing changed my game immensely. I looked in the mirror and when i replicated the swing just to keep club face down and load my wrists - my swing was exactly like your teach and the funny thing is i realised that i had rotated my shoulder to tilt even though it did not feel like it at all. I was annoyed with myself as i realised i kept on over turning my body and lifting the club too high and my shot was going everywhere. So i took it to the golf course and i instantly got good results. Now there is an issue where i sometimes put the ball too far forward and the ball goes left to right but a 7 iron goes left to right 150 to 160 yards - so it is something i can work on. Also i never get a draw and the best strikes just go straight. But coming along.

    Tom! Although I viewed this video when it was first presented, I came back to it today. Why? Because I was not happy with my downswiing yesterday. After again re- viewing this video, I took up a club and tried this (push the hips toward the target) move. Yesterday, I don't think I was consistent with this move and the rotate the hips move would occur. What happened was a pulled shot with the ball going left into the bunker. Hopefully, using this move consistently will eliminate this challenge!

    • @SagutoGolf

    Hands Quiet and Hips Quiet are two of your best tips. One of the biggest faults of Hogan"s Five lessons is where he states in lesson 4 that the downswing is initiated by the turning of the hips. Thank you for this great video.

    • @SagutoGolf
      @SagutoGolf  6 месяцев назад

      Thanks - I'm glad those concepts are resonating with you!
      There's a lot of great information in Mr. Hogan's "Five Lessons" book, but there have also been many misinterpretations that have led numerous golfers - and their ball flight - astray. I do my best to take what Mr. Hogan conveys in the book as his "feels", apply it to the reality of what he actually did in his swing, and translate it into something we all can learn well from, because if we can get Hogan right there are tremendously effective swing keys to be garnered.

    I'll give it a try in my drills. My wedges and irons have been decent but my driver inconsistent. I should have easily broken 90 but 3 tee shots OB/hazards on the back cost me yesterday. Seems like only driver where I can't find that sync and tempo. You’re not wrong Tom. Through personal experience my swing thought would be weight transfer to the front foot which will naturally take the hips forward as opposed to thinking sliding the hips as I found myself thrusting too forcefully thus bending me out of shape and the only prize I was going to win would be the local Salsa dance award. (Step aside Ricky Martin.)
    Plus, I found shifting the weight/sliding the hips also cured hitting behind the ball 😁
    I’m pretty sure you’ve done a video on the leading knee movement that starts the downswing which moves your weight and slides the hips forward.

    I have followed your tips on the backswing (butt to belly button) and I've been told by a coach that my backswing now looks very good. However it seems I'm still a bit steep on the way down and my ball impact varies too much. I was told I need to drop the hands and then sweep around, but my head makes me do it in two distinct moves which doesn't work.
    I saw some tips about a first move with hips which automatically lowers hand, so I'm assuming this is what you're also alluding to (and I think I tend to be too stuck in the hips so this could be my big fix.)

    Still working on this hip movement . I believe that the hip slide must be straight or slightly right of target line . If hips slide left ( or open ) too soon I tend to cut across the ball . Is this a valid assumption ? Thanks for answering my last question .

      Yes. That is valid. The lateral hip slide keeps the rotational component in check and does not allow it to take over prematurely.

      As mentioned in a previous response, if your path is already sufficiently in-to-out then overemphasizing this lateral hip slide could lead to big pushes/blocks and overdraws.
      Yes - keeping our head in the "box" preestablished at address is a key element for keeping us centered through the entire swing motion, and in doing so the proper downswing action will result in some measure of trail side tilt.

      Hi John,
      Here is a lesson from my channel's archives featuring Mr. Hogan: ruclips.net/video/iejRWhuB7y8/видео.html Pay particular attention to his lateral hip action that is occurring in conjunction with their rotation.
      Sadly, the "firing the hips" move is routinely either improperly conveyed or misinterpreted, and as a result far too many amateur golfers are afflicted with a premature spinout of the hips in the downswing - even as early as in the transition. We see it all the time with paths that are steep and/or routed across the ball from the outside, causing a host of poor impact conditions and undesirable shots. The lateral targetward action of the hips acts as a governor to prevent a premature over-rotation and thereby enables the player to keep his upper torso square without having to fight their body. Most amateur golfers already have plenty of the rotational component; they need to build in the lateral hip slide to suppress that early-onset spinout.
      Thanks so much for your kind assessment of this lesson. Best of luck to you.

    I would suggest being more detailed. "push your hips". Okay. With my trail leg? With my abs? With the ball of my trail foot? Where am I pushing from or is it more of a hip slide? Power is supposed to come from your feet. No? A complete explanation of generating that "push" would be helpful. ....my two cents. Like all of your others, still a great video! Thank you!

    • @SagutoGolf
      @SagutoGolf  2 года назад

      Hi Wayne,
      Since our weight is favoring the lead side throughout the swing, any push from the trail side would necessitate a reverse weight shift. Instead, we increase pressure into the lead leg at the transition and that sets the lateral action of the lead knee and hips in motion.

    Love this. Couple questions…do you feel like you are pushing towards the target by pushing off the inside of the right foot? And how far do you feel like that left hip is moving towards the target? 8-10 inches or so before you fire the hip?

    • @SagutoGolf
      @SagutoGolf  2 года назад

      Glad you enjoyed this lesson! The episode from the previous week speaks specifically to the trail foot action. Here's the link: ruclips.net/video/xQAY78M7hMs/видео.html
      I don't really feel like I'm pushing off with the trail foot because that would require transferring pressure into the trail side at the transition, potentially causing a backwards shift in my swing center and low point. Rolling the trail foot inward simply triggers the lateral hip slide, combats a premature rotation, and gets the weight moving even more forward. I don't think about how far the hips move towards the target. The key is to feel that they are moving laterally through impact. The "firing" - or rotation - should then happen on autopilot.
      Here are some lesson videos that should supplement this one quite well:

    Title is misleading.
    Initiating your down swing with your hips, and lower body, prevents you from coming over the top.
    Down-swing is maybe 0.3 seconds long. During that time you're shifting your weight towards the target and turning at the same time.

    • @SagutoGolf
      @SagutoGolf  2 года назад

      Nothing misleading about it. The vast majority of amateur golfers - the audience of this channel - allow their rotation to dominate the downswing, thereby routing the path across the ball. They will not lose the rotational component. They simply need to learn how to keep it in check by having the hips move laterally through impact.

    I was just trying to put my weight on my left foot and then I'd spin my hips too early. I can see that concentrating on my left pocket going to the target longer, can help with the early spin out. I practiced it indoors,felt good, and I'll take it to the driving range. Thanks.

    • @SagutoGolf
      @SagutoGolf  2 года назад

      I hope it performs well for you, Frieda.
      One of the keys is to prevent your upper torso and head (and swing center) from moving forward during the downswing as you gradually load more weight into the lead leg. If the swing is properly executed, your weight should be 70% forward at the top, 80% halfway down, and 90% at impact, all without any forward movement of the upper torso. Do this and the club will approach the ball powerfully on a shallowed path. Conversely, if we allow the upper body to release forward prematurely the downswing path will be rerouted across the ball and most of our stored up energy will be lost.
      Have fun out there!!
      Tom

    You DO TURN the hips but much later than what most people do. In fact hips push towards the target at the start of the down swing. Only when the shaft reaches parallel to the ground on the down swing that your hips turn just before impact.This happens automatically and unconsciously .

    • @SagutoGolf
      @SagutoGolf  2 года назад

      That sounds consistent with what I am teaching here, @TK Pakman. The problem for the majority of amateur golfers is that they rotate the hips immediately at the start of the downswing with little or no lateral hip motion towards the target. That is why this move needs to be taught, drilled, and ingrained.

    • @SagutoGolf
      @SagutoGolf  2 года назад

      Indeed, David - the upper torso (and head) keep the center of our swing circle intact as the lower body moves targetward. This is key to consistency and power!

    Hip slide to the left is the hardest thing to learn, for me anyway. I move maybe two inches, then my head moves back a bit and hips just stop. Don't know, maybe poor flexibility.

    • @SagutoGolf
      @SagutoGolf  2 года назад

      It can be a challenging piece of the swing puzzle for a lot of folks - not due to lack of flexibility, but simply a result of what has been ingrained over the years. The technical term is "disassociation", meaning that the lower body moves laterally towards the target while the upper body - and therefore your swing center - remain in place. That's the formula for maintaining the proper downswing path and experiencing consistently crispy contact.

    Great video - not sure why countless video can never deliver this type of information. For some like me, this helps visualize the swing which is the only way to learn it and correct terrible habits to improve.

    Again nice job explaining how to move the hips properly. This was my biggest issue which was the main reason for swinging over the top and feeling stuck

    How do you blend the Hogan hip turn staying on the left leg with your video on the TILT?
    The Hogan stay on the left leg works great, but now I'm confused with your video on the tilt?

      Hi Bill,
      There is no conflict at all as the backswing is a combination of tilting, turning, and extending while gradually loading more and more into the lead side.
      It is important to understand that the videos, lessons, and drills on this free channel - while fully aligned with the swing method I teach - address a variety of topics, issues, feels, and/or common flaws/fixes from one episode to the next. They are certainly not intended to be taken as a comprehensive, sequential learning platform like the structured curriculum of my online school, which I strongly recommend to anyone who truly wishes to get on the proper path towards owning this swing. So many folks across the globe are now enjoying the best golf of their lives as a result. Here's a link if you would like to know more about the school - saguto.golf - and here's a link to my free mini-course “The Top 3 Things You Need to Be a Great Ball Striker” if you’re interested in checking it out: go.saguto.golf/

    I love the way that Tom correctly debunks all the old ideas that traditional coaching has always taught, or at least implied. How to create the mystical lag effect is a great puzzle to most amateur golfers. For those who have seen this video, puzzle no more...

      Unfortunately, @Felipe_uk, such sorcery from this dark underworld of golf instruction rarely finds its way to the mainstream because if too many folks found out about it the mainstream would then be rendered irrelevant.......😎
      Thanks for your kind words, and right you are - the "lag puzzle" is solved!

      What did he debunk? Some lateral shift to the lead side with properly timed rotation is *exactly in line with conventional instruction.*
      Once you realize he actually wants the hips to turn, just a proper turn (like any instructor), it's clearly not at all bucking tradition, but just a questionable explanation. Sliding, without a full turn, or a late turn, is also a common fault. This makes the clickbait thumbnail/title misleading and potentially detrimental to many.
      Also, nothing here remotely "solves" the lag puzzle. Proper sequencing is certainly a piece of it, but this video only slightly addresses sequencing, thus it would be very generous to even make that association, let alone claim a solution is given.

      @@GP-qz6kk I would dispute that what was explained was "in line with conventional instruction". I have heard quite a few coaches (face-to-face and on RUclips) state/imply that "you can't TURN your hips too quickly once at the top of the backswing". Hips first, shoulders follow etc. This gets amateurs (especially seniors) into a lot of trouble IMO as there is "too much going on" (in the downswing) for them to square the clubface at impact. This can easily lead to a rushing of the downswing, which is fatal - as illustrated by the dozens of TY videos on the subject. As Tom explained, the correct thing to do is to keep the hips relatively 'quiet' during transition and only "fire" the hips at the "last moment" (i.e. when the club is about parallel). I found this out for myself by trial and error (over many years!) and have not previously seen it explained as well as Tom did. My own experience is that a relatively short backswing also helps, accompanied by a focus on the follow-through.

      @@felipe_uk2840 I have never heard a single person teach that. I have heard that the downswing starts with the lower body, which is correct, but does need explanation. I realize that could be misinterpreted without proper explanation, but, if that is the specific audience you're targeting, emphasize that context, and avoid the completely incorrect "don't turn" that will be even more likely misinterpreted. How is kind of seeming to instruct a slide any better? Even the people with the fault being targeted may just trade 1 fault for another.
      If you actually heard someone teach that, I would just make 2 points: 1. You can find bad advice about anything, but that is hardly "traditional instruction." 2. Maybe they were just doing the flip side of what was done here: they were exaggerating for people that don't use the lower body and didn't explain that. Or, intentionally trying to spin something as unconventional as a marketing strategy. If so, that should be pointed out for viewers benefit as well, and then move on to better instruction.
      Maybe you're thinking of lessons from back in the day. With the tech now (high speed cameras, launch monitors, ground force plates, and 3d computer modeling of the biomechanics), the mainstream instruction is pretty consistent and knowledgeable.
      Anyways, nice that it helped you. I hope I'm overestimating the potential detriment.

    there is separation between upper and lower body though correct?

    • @SagutoGolf
      @SagutoGolf  2 года назад

      Yes. The technical golf term is "disassociation, Jake. It means that as the lower body is moving targetward the upper torso is remaining in place laterally to preserve the swing center and low point.
