    What’s funny is that I was about 7 or 8 years old at the time and I used to listen to Purple Rain all the time, including Darling Nikki, and I used to sing along to it, and I had no idea what Prince was talking about. I think that I just sang whatever those words sounded like to a 7 year old. I wasn’t impacted by it all because I had no idea what he was talking about. I just know that I had so much fun and joy listening to that album with my siblings.

    My Dad had a strict policy: if there was something out there, be it a book, a movie, a show on TV, or a song, he would find it and play it for any of us in the house who were interested. It was only AFTER it had been played or viewed that he would have an opinion.
    He went to town on people who used the excuse "It's so horrible, you shouldn't be allowed to see it." He'd ask them, "Did YOU see it?" "Uh, well ... no, but I've been told -"
    Dad never was a person who would live his life trying to avoid crap just because someone else was freaking out -- especially over something they had never actually SEEN! He was the wisest man I ever knew, and I miss him beyond words.

    I think the problem with the founders of the PRMC was the fact they weren't stupid but they where overprotective parents who wanted to give parents more information however, In reality they either made parents more protective over something so unimportant therefore removing freedom of choice for children and teens. (not to mention the problems it gave the artist like a bad reputation or less popularty.) I dont think they are terrible but they couldn't see the bigger picture due to being too overprotective of their kids. Its the same with other things too: While it may seem scary, things like drugs or giving workers choice of when to rest, tends to be less of a problem when you give the people more freedom of choice.

"Do you REALLY want to hear the mud shark?" Frank taught it to his band on the spot. Then somehow they played it. And, get this, it sounded pretty.

    the issue with this idea of music and movies causing violent behaviour is that they treat a human child like some blank slate computer hard drive that will automatically download every single thing it takes in and repeat that behaviour every single time. The fact is humans have innate personality traits that will predispose them to liking or disliking certain ideas or activities regardless of how much exposure they have to it. ACDC is one of the most widely successful rock bands ever and they were a household name to millions of people all over the world and I'm pretty sure most of those people didn't become serial killers. The whole argument is absurd and completely eradicates any notion of personal responsibility

    Frank wasn't cynical enough. The labels were used to sell the products which Sally claimed to be concerned about. Frank was concerned about the Religious Right but now the alleged liberals are the ones clamoring for censorship of the Internet. Debasement of popular culture was one of the goals, the accomplishment of which was accelerated by labels informing kids which albums were most likely to upset their parents and maybe make them look cool to the other kids. The allegedly offensive songs for the most part were not being played on the radio, you had to search for it. The labels made it easier to find degenerate culture.

    Some of Zappas songs have completely filthy lyrics and children should not be allowed access to listen to them.
    Warning labels are appropriate and fine. But on an instrumental album as in Zappas Jazz From Hell? They get a little carried away.

    • @brianjacob8728
      @brianjacob8728 15 дней назад

      How are you defining children? Were you buying music under the age of 15? Could you even afford it? No. Your parents would have bought it, which puts this decision in their court. Your comment is moot here.
      If you are questioning whether someone between 15 and 18 should be able to decide for themselves, you can't legislate morality and sheltering people from themselves is really bad policy. So again, your comment is moot, if not poorly thought out.
      As frank once said, if listening to music, which is 99% love songs, was so effective, then there would be no wars, yet the US is greatest war mongering country in history. The lyrics aren't the issue; it's poor parenting and schooling to blame here.
