Part of my Tang Soo Do training has given me confidence in tense situalitions. This confidence allowed the situations to difuse instead of escalate, more than once. So by definition, it works.
In Tang Soo Do while training 2 or three days a week, and supporting your organization by going to events, you can expect to reach 1st Dan (black Belt) in approximately 3.5 years. To go from 1st to 2nd - another 2 years 2nd to 3rd - another 3 years 3rd to 4th (master) another 4 years So 12.5 or more years to reach 4th dan, master level. ++++ On the video - truly fantastic. I would expect nothing less from Mi Guk Kwan. GM Ferraro has some great people in his organization Tang Soo!

Really cool video and cool form. Reminds me of Chinese martial arts (I practice Northern Shoulin). I enjoy watching forms and techniques from different martial arts- why not appreciate instead of criticize?
i dont respond to many vids but i just have to say that this video is a complament to Tang Soo Do in a whole.The way they switch between forms and actual techniques embodys the spirit of um and yang.Also did i see some techniques from the begining form from Sip Soo and Baisai? either way bravo and ka map su ni da!

great vid guys! i'm an Ee dan in soo bahk do moo duk kwan. this vid had flawless technique, as far as i was concerned, and it was almost spot on to what sa bom nims do in soo bahk do moo duk kwan. can someone tell me...is there a difference between these two arts other than their name? i'd really appreciate it. I noticed every youtuber thinks they're the #1 martial artists just from watchign Jet Li movies. These kicks were meant to deliver pain, not look fancy and useless like WuShu. Well said Dan.
i was told ferraro was a student of master beaudoin and left. it seems basically the same to me except theyve added in the chil sung and yuk ro forms (i think) like other tsd associations.
I absolutely agree. I compare it to a child learning the alphabet. From white belt to black is just learning your letters. Once you've received your black belt, now you can start to read and write and put words together.

Tae Kwon Do didn't exist in any form prior to the mid-1950's. Prior to that, during the 35 year Japanese military occupation, indigenous Korean martial arts like Kwon Bup and Taekyon were outlawed. When the Japanese Occupation ended in 1945, the Korean Martial Arts were a collection of separate Kwans. Tang Soo Do being the chosen name of the art by several of them. Moo Duk Kwan, Chun Do Kwan, for example. Now, much later Mi Guk Kwan, all are names that define the STYLE of the Art.

Yes the Tae Kwan Do federation wanted to unify all martial arts under their umbrella. But some systems like Tang Soo Do, fought in the courts in Korea back then, to not be classified under the same Tae Kwan Do umbrella. KJN Hwang Kee was successful in staying independent. During the Korean War, TSD was taught on many military bases and many GI's came back a started teaching it in their hometowns. Schools started opening as Tang Soo Do or just Moo Duk Kwan. Sometime in the 70's I think, Master HC Hwang (KJN Hwang Kee's Son and now Kwan Jang Nim HC Hwang) came to the US and started the U.S. Tang Soo Do Moo Duk Kwan Federation (TSDMDK). Many Schools joined and helped organize a scattered style. Many other schools stayed independent or formed other federations - like World TSD. Europe has many of their own - often by country. In the 90's TSDMDK decided to change their name to Soo Bak Do - to separate themselves out and have a trademark name. This is after several years of re-introducing a series of older Soo Bak Do forms (Soo Bak Do name has its roots in an older Korean Martial Art, which I believe is where the Yuk Rho forms came from). I think they tried to strong arm other schools and organizations to drop the Tang Soo Do name. Tang Soo Do had too many branches and they wanted to control the name. So they decided to change theirs. I was there when they announced it and we all got new Dan belts in our school that said Soo Bak Do instead of Tang Soo Do. After some political nonsense, in 1995 the TSD Mi Guk Kwan split off and formed it's own Association, going went back to the original Tang Soo Do name. This was after we witnessed several other splits that happened over several years, as schools decided to move on from "the mother ship".

It was traditionally an empty handed art, meaning no weapons. When weapons became popular in the 80's many Tang Soo Do schools started working them in to get more business. As a rule, Tang Soo Do Moo Duk Kwan is not a weapon art. The staff form was not taught in the 70's and before. At least not in the U.S., I cannot speak to Korea..

I have trained in Kick Boxing for about 4 years and a little in Wing Chun but have been doing Soo Bahk Do for a few ywears now and its a lovely art and my favourite!!! Hope that helps a little ;-)
in a real life situation, grandmasters like these guys and people like chuck norris and many others in different federations would definetely beat bruce lee. Bruce lee was a showman, a filmstar rather than an actual master of karate. He never won any major tournaments, and all his fights were choreographed. Hope that helps.

I have no intentions to undermine this system, especially given the fact that I am not a practioner of this form of Martial ART. My mixed Martial Arts backround, however allows me to recognize the movements that belong to traditional Martial Arts system, which is deemed as ineffective when ones is being trapped in life/death confrontation. for those interested in the cultural, stylistic aspect of the system, by all means. As for realistic self defence, I recommend checking VeeArnisJitsu.
go ahead explain what taekwon do is...if you could, explain what tang soo do is too, the movement look very similar to me, cept taekwon-do is a weaponless art. (so i was told when i started it. ITF style) but i'm interested in the explanation.

Answer just this one question: you are walking down the street in a bad neighborhood, late at night; all of a sudden, five guys attack you, they want to hurt you, steal your money and belongings. What would your actions be. And by the way a heroic death is not an answer I should be reciving?
I think it's a foregone conclusion that anyone watching a form is not doing so to learn the secrets of street self defense. That's not what it's purpose is. It shows a proficiency of control and technique, an artful expression of the style's characteristics. I am not sure where you would get the idea that this has much to do with street self-defense. Your sour grapes are simply to plug your own school and style. Be more positive. You don't need to put others down to bring yourself up.
africavsworld, sorry to hear that. But its may not be the style so much as you not taking the time to be proficient. Boxing and Martial Arts fight with differnet rules. So not sure how you compare. The rules are there to protect you and allow you to train safely. If you lost in a fight, perhaps you need to figure out why you were in the fight in the first place. @Necrobotics It depends on the dojo and you. I got mine in about 5 years (I train 3-4 days a week). Some people in my dojo took longer.
This looks to me like a demonstration for show. I am sure what they teach for self-defense is quite different!

how many grandmasters r there? i thought it was shin alone 4ever but now apparently theres a bunch more. and ya im a black belt in shins style

Dojo is a Japanese term. Tang Soo Do is Korean and would use the term Dojang instead.

uh huh...i recommend you search Tommy Carruthers as one of the many result of Bruce Lee's Principle. And it's not for show. It's practical.
