  • BBC political journalist Anita Anand tells the fascinating and largely unknown story of Princess Sophia Duleep Singh - descendant of Sikh royalty( Maharaja Ranjit Singh and Maharaja Duleep Singh), goddaughter of Queen Victoria and pioneering suffragette. Bold and fearless, she marched alongside Emmeline Pankhurst in protest outside parliament, refused to pay her taxes until women got the vote, and even threw herself in front of prime minister Asquith's car.
    First aired 22/11/2015 BBC 1
    Presenter Anita Anand

I am curious why the British never questioned how a country could historically be governed by female monarchs, yet not allow females the vote. What was their justification?

    • @ashamazon2262

Their justification is exceptions don’t disprove the rule. “Women are inferior with some exceptions.” That’s what your typical modern day sexist will believe now

He tried to get his kingdom back and then Sophia was another revolutionary trying to fight against injustice. !!! Maharani Jind Kaur's final wish was to be cremated as Sikh rituals, Maharaja Duleep Singh's final wish was to be cremated as Sikh rituals, and Sophia's final wish to be cremated as Sikh rituals!!!!!!!!!!!!

It's so sad that the movie about sufragettes, didn't include her at all, even when it's clear that the leader Pankhurst, used her position and background to have controversy to the cause. I think she's even better than any of the other famous sufragettes, but the blind white feminism of hollywood ignores stories like hers. She was a true believer in equality....unlike women like Emiline P. ..or Meryl streep.

This is why people don't respect modern feminism, it is championed by the most privileged people on earth, who somehow still see oppression and inequality in their lives. Modern western 'activists' are just whining about their first world problems, and seem fully willing to ignore the real problems women face around the world.

    • @JustVinnyBlues
      @JustVinnyBlues 8 лет назад

+Dariella Presley The movement and other radical movements seeking social and economic equality were so rich with great personalities that I think it might have been more of a documentary if they included too many of them. It was a creative choice, of course, but it seems the film makers chose to dramatize the conflict as more of a personal story experienced by all women, rather than focusing on historical figures. I agree with you though, quite an amazing individual who could be the focal point of a film.

This is the sort of story which fills me with that sort indescribable of indignant, defiant, righteous, fiery energy that just makes me want to stand up straight and fight for equality and goodness and all the wrongs of the world to be made right.

i was born in hindu family but from inside live like a sikh. So far, i
have not being able to find any issue/ fault with Sikhism. It was too
good for its times and until recently Sikhs (majority) were doing great
and were close to their religion. Its when india opened its doors for
globalization that everything changed but people will not agree with
    me.

Vik, Sikhism was based on the purest of intent and is a beautiful region. Sadly, it was the 10th Guru Gobind Singh who destroyed its original intent - not India or globalization.Go back and research the main characters for Muslim, Hindu and Sikhs during the tenth Guru's time.

you are wrong. Guru Ji did what was needed..Sikhism would not have survived if we behaved like buddhists then. I am very proud of what our 10th Guru Ji gave to us

C Swank your understanding of Sikhism is good. But i condemn your comments about the 10th Guru. His teachings are of the quality unmatched in the world. Among so many things about religion and spirituality, He also taught the world to stand against the etrocities with a sword in hand to safeguard your self-respect and the respect of the downtrodden ( not confined to Sikhs only). It is due to the teachings of the 10th Guru that i myself shall stand by you in case of some discrimination you face in my presence. He taught us to stand up and struggle.
Study the life of Guru Gobind Singh Ji and you will change your opinion .

His intentions were to defend Khalsa because he had his father decapitated when he was only nine by Aurangzeb. He had to defend the Khalsa and their mission for human rights

Thank you for your research and a very inspiring story. All Indians, ( even those who are now called Pakistanis, must learn how the British robbed India and Indians of their wealth, and heritage. Meghan Markle has lot to learn from these Indian Royals who were exiled and imprisoned by the British Monarchy. Time has come for us to publish and distribute these stories wildly.

her mum was a mixed race bastard to spoil the pedigree of the royal family apart from the fact she didn't speak the same language as her husband neither english nor punjabi, urdu, hindi, french . It was a calculated move to prevent the next generation from being recognised by sikhs since they too were made into christians people of the court.

not just march in , they had two anglo-sikh wars , and needed to bribe traitors to sabotage the sikh troops , the 'Empress' was so hard up she even confiscated all the jewellery owned by Ranjit Singh's widows , embroidered shawls/pashminas leaving them destitute or imprisoned in the case of the Maharani Jind Kaur grandmother of Sophia .
