Yeah, I rediscovered that amazing line because of Kataklysm 'Ambassador of Pain', its not my favorite song from them, but I love sampling in my metal/industrial (e.g. Combichrist 'This is My Rife', taken from Full Metal Jacket).
This is one of the most criminally underrated masterpieces of all time. Every frame is a work of art. Tip of the hat to all involved. Oh yeah, the book is just as good (highly recommended).
Should have picked up a handful of Oscars; once again Sam Mendes proved he was a master of superb art direction and Thomas Newman probably the best composer of a movie score. There is not one bad moment in this film and all the cast are exceptional. It is in my top ten of all time. Tom Hanks was so cast against type and pulled off a tour de force of a performance.
what a strong dialogue! "This is the life we chose, the life we lead. And there is only one guarantee: none of us will see heaven." one of the best quotes ever!
"They' re only murderers in this room" Great stellar acting. Reminds of Roth and Michael in Godfather 2 "This is the business we have chosen" You can't teach this level of acting.
"There are only murderers in this room!" 2 of the greatest actors in film history.. in a true masterpiece of a movie. An absolutely brilliant scene that surpasses any need for words to describe it... 5/5
Cinematographer Conrad L Hall’s last film. Won an Oscar for it, posthumously. Had also won an Oscar for Butch Cassidy and had worked with Newman on Cool Hand Luke. A master. Second only to Gordon Willis
"This is the life we chose, the life we lead. And there is only one guarantee -- none of us will see heaven." One of the best lines of all time, hands down.
@@Deadmanundertaker100 Today for the first time (watching the scene before) I thought about that. Why he cares? I mean, every sunday to churche, is for keeping appearences or he's use to, or he hope that maybe... I don't have the answer.
Watching this right now for the firs time since seeing this in theaters. So many moments stuck with me since, the biggest one..."I'm glad it's you." Too deep, too well done.
first time i was thinking he will only take revenge who murdered his wife and son. But the true story is he wanted only save his child and protect him to dont kill anybody for revenge, so wouldnt become mafia as himself.
Gangster Rooney basically signed his death warrant upon the conclusion of that meeting, & I believe that he knew that deep down, his gut instincts probably alerted him to that possibility, that likelihood. Though what a scene, what an exchange, what revelations, what a movie! The greatest Irish Mob movie of all time. Paul Newman was never better, while Tom Hanks gave a near equal powerhouse performance. Outstanding, riveting, poignant, memorable, heartbreaking, & altogether amazing, on every level. All the various elements came flowing together perfectly, with an exquisite seamlessness & refinement. This masterpiece will always resonate with me in a powerfully captivating, heartfelt fashion.
What a great dialoug THERE R ONLY MURDERER IN THIS ROOM.. only paul newman can say tht kinda things one of the greatest actors in the history of hollywoid
There are only murders in this room. open ur eyes! This is the life we choose, the life we lead... and there is only one guarantee: None of us will see heaven... powerful lines and well put.
In real life, Looney's lieutenants betrayed him because they wanted his rackets for themselves, not because of Connor Looney's misdeeds. They murdered Connor instead and all four mobsters received life sentences for his killing.
Yes, it can. If you want to get technical, Michael isn't even his son. He only said that he considered him as a son. He knows what Michael is capable of, and even with more respect and adhereance to Micheal, he decides to NOT give up his only son Connor. So who does he love more? His son or Michael? He respect Michael more but he loves Connor like Michael does his own. The "Son he lost" line could refer to Michael's decision to turn on him, or knowing Michael was very capable of his sons murder.
I'm of the belief everyone sees it eventually, but the more and the worse the sins one commits and dies without paying for, the longer it takes to get there.
I hate how loyalty to a fault is somehow respected or admired. You hear it all the time in love songs. "I'll defend you whether you're wrong or right." I absolutely HATE that. I'm not saying you have to brutally attack someone who's wrong, but should never accept it. Defending someone who is wrong is a whole new level of stupid.
Richard Jones I agree wholly with you, as that type of mind set is illogical, dangerous, ridiculous and really, really stupid (as you made clear). It's also this common trait amongst working class and urban Irish Catholics, as depicted in this SPECTACULAR MOVIE (and I should know a thing or two about the Irish, as I grew up in just about the most Irish neighborhood in the United States, Squantum, this coastal Irish enclave in the very Irish city of Quincy, Massachusetts).
The folly of sin: "There is only one guarantee (said by Newman). That none of us will see heaven." Certainly, if one willfully embraces a sin lifestyle, what Newman said is sadly true. But if one repents and confesses wholeheartedly to God for forgiveness, He will pardon. He will allow into heaven. Not by any merit of ourselves, but by the spilled blood of His Son Jesus who saves to the uttermost.
You were motivated by the fear of risking your own ambitions. You know who you are, Your behavior was cowardly & pathetic and you will-as we all will-ultimately be held accountable
@JohnnyBoyCali this films not about the action mate - obv it is to a certain extent but its all about the meaning n stuff with regards to the events that happen

We will all miss Paul Newman, one of the greatest actors ever.
"This is the life we choose the life we lead and there is only one guarantee, none of us will see heaven"
I really like this film
That is such a great line.
This line is so true!
The irony is that when he says that line they are in the basement of a church. Such a great film...
Yeah, I rediscovered that amazing line because of Kataklysm 'Ambassador of Pain', its not my favorite song from them, but I love sampling in my metal/industrial (e.g. Combichrist 'This is My Rife', taken from Full Metal Jacket).
Trump.
Two seasoned actors really filling the scene with despair and conflict. Beautiful.
How lucky are we to have these amazing scenes with arguably two of the greatest actors of all time? So grateful Paul Newman agreed to this role.
Newman and Hanks both were sensational in this film.
"There are only murderers in this room! Michael! Open your eyes! " devastating
Damn
But an interesting line to justify his son for murdering half a family.
@@thejanusproject32 It’s easy for us to judge but Paul’s character still deeply cared for his son!
"This is the life we chose, the life we lead and there is only one guarentee none of us will see heaven" BEST QUOTE IN THIS FILM!!
Choral singing in the church above sounds like heaven... while the basement that they’re in represents hell
spot on!
Damn! Such an insightful interpretation, Gerald.

"There is only one guarantee..none of us will see Heaven". What a strong statement knowing what you did. Powerful line.
Such an underrated movie, this is God father first class.
