David Hyde Pierce really is a master of physical comedy, right down to being able to make you laugh with just a facial expression. It’s amazing that we didn’t see much of him after Frasier ended, he should’ve gotten his own series!
I absolutely agree with everything you’ve said. He is my favorite actor on the show. Although they were ALL unique in their own ways. That’s what makes a great sitcoms!
even though he's a second away from puking, Niles voluntarily enters the elevator when Daphne comes. In all other instances he's being dragged. These subtle differences as well as the superb acting make the show great
David played niles so well in the scene, I actually felt a little sick seeing him go up and down the lift. This truly is the best sitcom. Extremely witty but not over the top. One to be missed.
I love the other one where he climbs up into the space above the elevator (at Christmas) to release a switch. Then the others in the car all get out and leave him,. and you hear niles going "People?? Lady who's holding my coat"..???
That's is so OCD of him to have Signout sheet for his CD"s Reminds me of my husband he has one as well... This whole scene of Nile's in an elevator wanting to heave was absolutely hilarious.. I was definitely feeling for him
When I was in the Navy a lot of guys I knew a lot of guys had problems once they started walking on dry land. I'll tell you what, it IS disorientating when you first step on solid ground after a long deployment. You're so used to swaying back and forth in time with the ocean, that you will automatically start trying to sway to a non-existent roll. I know the reality of it, I'd felt it, but it passed quickly for me, some others did get nauseous from it. Niles played it beautifully.
Niles is and always has been my favorite character on this show, followed very closely by Daphne...David Hyde Pierce is really good at the physical comedy like this, as well as the intellectual type stuff that goes with the character...makes me laugh every time
This is great example of how great David Hyde Pierce is as an actor. He really does look sick. I know the makeup helps but his expressions really give that feeling of being sick. Ken Levine- one of the writers on Frasier- wrote about DHP on his blog once and said it better than I could: "I can’t tell you how many times he [David Hyde Pierce] saved our bacon by making lines and moments work that really shouldn’t have. As I’ve said before, of all the comic actors I’ve had the privilege of working with, David Hyde Pierce is the best. And here’s the thing, I’m sure there’s a lot of technique and craft going on in there but he makes it all seem absolutely effortless. I just marvel."
@@gabrielcoronado6395 . I thought the Cary Grant Syndrome referred to people meeting Cary Grant and expecting his persona to be that of the Cary Grant from Hollywood that they always saw on the screen. But they were surprised/shocked/disappointed (choose your own adjective) to find out that he was really just plain Archibald Leach from Bristol.
Frasier was a lucky casting case well done. Kelsey Grammer greatly influenced this. For example, since the series was designed, he insisted that John Mahoney play the role of his father. In fact, he went so far as to say that if John Mahoney didn't accept, he simply wouldn't do the series. Grammer visited Mahoney several times and finally convinced him. Mahoney hesitated to accept because he was acting on Broadway, and accepting Frasier made it difficult for him to move to California and leave the theater. That was the case for Bebe Neuwirth, who was also invited to regularly play the role of Lilith. But she chose to stay on Broadway and just make special appearances. David's case was almost magical. A year or two before Frasier was created, an agent found a photograph of him and was struck by his resemblance to Grammer. "It would be nice to call him in case we ever need a replacement or a brother for Kelsey," she said jokingly. When the creative team was working on designing Frasier, someone remembered that photograph. They decided to call Hyde Pierce. The surprise was to find that this great actor turned out to be a great comedian, with superlative charisma and charm, but also humble, a good partner and a hard worker. A curious fact is that the original idea was to focus the stories more on the radio station (in the manner of Wings or Cheers) and to leave Frasier's personal life in the background. In that scenario, Roz would have had a much more important role, as Frasier's counterpart. But with Hyde Pierce and Mahoney, things changed. Soon, those portentous actors caught a lot of attention. The result was that writers were much more likely to create situations around Martin, Niles, and of course Daphne. The result was a complete team. An enormous merit of Grammer was that he had had enough humility and intelligence to realize that he should not be the center of everything, and he knew how to give place to each of his colleagues. In many chapters, he acted as a troupe for the showcasing of Hyde Pierce. That is not easy. Let's look at the case of Fran Drescher, who had his own Niles, but who did not shine. Another case is that of Jim Belushi, who insisted on always being the only funny one. In short, the success of Frasier (and Hyde Pierce) was due to the conjunction of talents (including producers and writers) and a great job team up.
Before Frasier David was in the comedy series The Powers That Be. He played the part of a depressed and suicidal congressman Theodore Van Horne and got most of the laughs because of the way he delivered his lines. That series was cancelled after two seasons but had it continues he would never have got the chance to play Niles.
OMG!!! Poor Niles kept being pulled back into the elevator while he was suffering from nausea and on the verge of losing his cookies!!! Now this what I call splendid acting!
when I was pregnant I was sick from the time I got up until I went to bed at night and then sometimes during the night three or four trips to the bathroom. I know how it feels to be feeling like you're going to throw up most of the day. I hear ya Niles!
With a single substitution of David, Kelsey, Jane, Peri or John....it just wouldn't have been this good. The show producers absolutely captured lightning in a bottle.
I would really like to see the one where he was ironing his pant, somehow got a cut, and kept passing out. Have to see if I can find it. It was one of the funniest skits he did. EDIT: Found it. Niles causes fire. "Silent Scene".

The movie where he hosted a dinner party was great.

Easy to see why he won several Emmy's.
Don't know much about DHP despite being a big fan of Frasier, so I'm glad to know this. He deserves them all.
If anyone in a sitcom ever deserved an Emmy, it was Jason Alexander, from "Seinfeld.....

By the time he finally got off that elevator, he was doing the walk that we all do - the slightest movement can set off vomit.
