I think Alex is the most underrated character on modern family because she is kind of self sufficient she can take care of herself, is so intelligent and all that without any help from anyone. And the reason she can be termed as mean could be because no one really gets how much she manages on her own...
You totally should have included the part in airport 2010 where she laughs so hard over Haley having a crush on an 8th grade boy that she falls to the floor it’s probably the best clip of her ever

I feel so bad for Alex. I was like her, I got good grades and became pretty independent pretty fast. My parents just kinda ignored me and let me do my own thing. It sucks. She has no one to fall back on, if she fails then her parents aren’t going to notice and neither of them can really comfort her. She probably also has “gifted kid syndrome” where she puts so much pressure on herself to be smart since that’s the only thing she was ever complimented on. Happened to me, I wasn’t constant thinking that if I’m not smart than I have nothing. Her sister was pretty, and her brother was fun and got to be childish. She was smart, and she had to keep being smart. Rewatching the show, it’s borderline abusive how neglected she is. There’s a few episodes where Claire and Phil actually step up and parent her, but the main ones are only when she’s broken and it’s painfully obvious that she needs help. Like the therapy episode and the one where she doesn’t sleep for 3 days. The only time her parents step up is when she’s on the verge of a breakdown, in the therapy episode she does breakdown. In the sleepless episode it takes for her to go to her mom saying that she can’t read. Claire and Phil aren’t bad parents, but they are when it comes to Alex.

i get that modern family plays on stereotypes and inflates them and that Alex is supposed to be the overlooked, naturally perfect middle child, but i hate when people say Claire and Phil are the perfect parents because some scenes are pure neglect on Alex and it´s scary when people say they want to be like them as parents :S
