Usually it's because there are at least two other people playing lagoon too. Try it when you are the only one playing it, maybe you will go top 4 or more.

Do not force any comp. Play arround items and augments. And then build something

Darkflight/Cannoneer is currently very strong, easy to force and requires very few items. Good, easy comp for a beginner. Just watch a quick youtube video about it.
