    I never tire of watching these documentaries. I was a kid during the Space program and loved every minute of it. I still try to watch and read as much as I can about this achievement. The skill and intelligence of the engineers, then add the cajones of the astronauts to actually say, yeah, we got this. Amazing still.

    I grew up on Appollo... I was six years old at the time of the pad fire of Appollo One. I knew something wasn't right, but six-year-old brains think only in black and white, as their caporal skills do not kick in until the age of eight or nine. By the time of Appollo Seven, it was the stuff of childhood dreams. Everyone I knew, including myself, was eating space food sticks and drinking Tang. We loved this program.

    At the time it was designed the F-1 turbopump was the most powerful pump in the world for its weight. At 2,500 lbs it produced 55,000 brake horse power (41 megawatts). It pumped 42,500 gallons of rocket fuel into the combustion chamber per minute. Designed at a bar on a napkin by engineers from Rocketdyne over a beer after work, it spins at 5,500 rpm and uses the engine fuel to lubricate the bearings, removing the need for a separate pressurized lubrication system.

    • @ctdieselnut
      @ctdieselnut Год назад +4

      Yes, while it's hard to overstate how smart and integral he was, boiling the space race on the u.s.'s side down to one person (or even 3), is way too simplistic, and overlooks the contributions made by countless, unnamed engineers who don't get the glory. Getting a man on the moon took millions of man hrs, technicians, engineers, project managers, politicians, etc. They all made a contribution, and with the drive we had to beat the Russians, if von braun didn't exist, you'd be saying someone else was the visionary. That's not a criticism of von braun, it's a testament to our will.
      I get your point, im not trying to give you a hard time, but this is like saying Robert Oppenheimer is the Manhattan Project.

    • @thomasbell7033
      @thomasbell7033 11 месяцев назад

      Yes, but there's that niggling little detail about von Braun bearing the equivalent rank of major in the SS. The media back then ignored that fact plus the uncomfortable histories of the other nazis in our rocket programs.
      The American public would have called the journalists everything from unpatriotic to commie collaborators had they brought these facts up.
      So von Braun et al were presented as German civilian scientist who just happened to get caught up in a war.

      No. Not until a successful launch. Then the baton will be passed. As it is, Starship has a way to go - the Stage 1 burn was a dismal failure but hopefully provided the telemetry needed to prepare for a successful launch either this year (2023) or sometime early in 2024. 8:25 - Just for the record, Von Braun originally championed “direct ascent,” using the proposed-but-never-built Nova rocket. However, John Houbolt, and to lesser degree a team at Grumman, showed that, as you alluded, direct ascent is just not feasible on a reasonable budget and timeline.

    I love the Saturn V, rocket engine tests. It's a 2+ Megaton Bomb. Coming out a couple of nozzles! So yeah. Some damage miles away. At least everybody didn't get, Crispy Fried.
    I love the story about the cameraman turning and running. You suppose it was a bit loud? That poor boy didn't know what to expect? He thought he could handle it. I bet he couldn't even get it up after he got home! He probably went limp for days. If not weeks? So funny! I'm sure after that he never went to any Rock Concerts, either. They are just as scary! In fact. Scarier!
    Yes when I was in FM DJ. I had to represent the station. And I was assigned. To go to the, KISS Concert at the Baltimore Civic Center. (Now the Mariner Stadium).
    Bob Seeger, from Detroit was the opening band. From my hometown. And they were Superb! The sound was great!
    And then…… KISS came on. The crowd went absolutely wild. And the volume got turned up. To such earsplitting levels. That I and the other DJs from the other stations. We all sank down to the floor behind the seats. And I brought with me. A pocket full of cotton balls. To stick in my ears. When all of the other guys saw me doing that. They all stuck out their hands! And I doled out what I had.
    After the concert was over. I couldn't hear what anybody was saying! I was profoundly deaf! My career as an, Audio Engineer, Over! Before it could really begin! Oh my God! I'm deaf!
    I was like that for over a week and 1/2! I thought I was a goner. It seemed like it took forever. Before my hearing got back to normal. Or what I think is normal? And I vowed. I would never subject myself to that kind of Sound Pressure Level, again! And I never did.
    Later. I went on to make Recording History. And garner multiple major music award nominations. By always having control. Of my volume. And at 68. My hearing is better than most. My hearing is still, Exceptional. And flat out to 15 kHz! Better than most. I also never played electric guitar nor drums. I played French Horn. Not in a rock band. But I love recording rock 'n' roll. It's just plain fun. It doesn't have to be perfect. Like my, Operatic Recordings. Which are about as close to perfect as one can get. And it requires a very different Technique. Also from that of the, Evening Network World Wide News. Which I also did for a couple of decades. For a big, National Broadcasting Company, type place. Called NBC. The first. The original. The biggest. The best. The one that designed and built all the equipment. So we could use it for them. It was a lot of fun. And I learned so much about Politics and how our Government, runs. And others, don't. Very well.
    Not that our USA is perfect. It certainly is not. But it's the best one in the world! And that's why we need to Protect. What we have here. Not destroy it and tear it down to make it better. That's the wrong way to do it. Because?
    The right way to do it. Is, to charge the proper taxes. And provide for all Americans. An extension to, Public School Education. To include. A Free, 4 Year, College Degree. If you should so choose to accept it. That or a Trade School.. Of your choice. Free.
    And that's how we, Make America Better than just Great, Again. DUH! But of course a poor little rich kid. That never listened in school. Would ever think of anything this stupid. Because Thinking is, Fuddy-Mental. Yeah. We know.
    But nobody's talking about this.. They are only talking about removing rights from Americans. Rights they have had throughout their entire lives. Now no longer Constitutional! Really? Or do you mean no longer, Cons--Titutional? Which is it? I think it's the latter. As it certainly is not the Former Formal, Constitution. Which was very well thought out. By actual Thinkers who Founded Our Country..
    And these Republicunt's are an, Abomination! To our US Federal Constitution. They've taken their Q. To the next level. Of Hatred. Toward Americans, THEY DON'T LIKE! And they must be stopped.
    There is no other way.

Jesus called you on your smart phone and told you to? Of course.. I forgot I didn't think about that. Well tell him I said hi because he's my brother not your brother. I'm a Jew. You are not a Jew. You don't like Jews. But you worship a Jew. Great! Good for you! You certainly have your head screwed on right.. You are thinking clearly.
      Well you didn't get a chance to work in the White House with Ronald Reagan and George Herbert Walker Bush like I did. You got to masturbate pretending you wear them. I mean were them. Maybe both? After all you want to get inside some other woman's body. Have you considered seeing a psychiatrist? I got my sex change surgery decades ago. How about you?
      Most Americans don't hate other Americans. Even if we know you do. But you don't have to go. You can wait for us. As we have had enough. Of Thuggish Tough Guy, Godfather, Bullshit. Enough! You have my permission to start acting like an American now. And get drunk. I would join you if I could. But I'm taking care of my 100-year-old mother. Good thing I'm now retired. Maybe you should retire yourself also. I'm just saying.
      Happy new year and vote for the right guy. Because you don't want to be a loser again. Like you were the last time and didn't believe it. And so if it happens a second time. Maybe this time you'll be able to believe it? No that's impossible. It's whatever you make up. It's what emotional four-year-olds do. It's okay my friend. You will soon fall on your face. I think the Starship has 2 stages, the first stage uses 33 raptor engines so they are smaller than Saturn 5's 5 F1 engines.
      Starship's 2nd stage uses only 3 engines but since it's already high in the atmosphere they are not nearly as powerful as the Saturn 5's F1 engines.

    The F-1, re-engineered, was considered for SLS. Too bad the correct choice wasn't made. A new F-1 engine based SLS would have left NASA in a much better position than the RS-25 / solid booster solution that was chosen. Solid propellant based motors are too dangerous for manned spaceflight. The excellent reusable RS-25 is too expensive to use on a disposable rocket. For the price of one RS-25 engine, SpaceX could build several unmanned Starships.

    • @EricHamm

      @psycotria Год назад

      @@EricHamm SLS will likely be cancelled before completing the proposed program. It is far too expensive.
      The IFT2 launch did exactly what it was needed to do. B9 performed its boost-phase job flawlessly, inserting ancient S25 into the proper trajectory. Hot staging worked.
      It appeared that B9 propellant slosh prevented a proper boost-back burn. S25 seemed to suffer a structural or plumbing failure as max acceleration phase was reached. All these problems will be addressed, or may already have been considered.
      Blow it up, then fix it has worked for SpaceX since Day One. I see no reason why it will not continue to be a successful path going forward.

    The Post Production on this lovely, Space Documentary. Includes some, unintended comedy. Yes. It does.
    Such as hearing the speech by JFK. His voice is too high. This British production. Took American, 24 frame per second film. And played it back. At USA Video Frame Rate of, 30 frames per second. Which raises the pitch of his voice, noticeably. It's very funny. It's one of those whoops, postproduction, moments. Very funny. They weren't intending to be funny. But video guys are not, Audio Guys. And they really don't know what they are listening to. Like I wouldn't be perfectly certain. If I got your flesh tone exactly right? And I wouldn't care. As long as you are not green nor purple. It'll do. That's NTSC American standard. Meaning Never Twice the Same Color. NTSC. Inside of the Brits and Germans. Who became, PALs. And, We Can Do It Better, France. Who could See Cam. And didn't have a,, PAL. And the Russians took pity on their poor soul. At got a great discount on Sea Cam. As long as it didn't smell all fishy! And the color information was on, sequential lines. Instead of alternating phase between lines. Pretty much all the same crap in the end. But France had to be different. Of course.
    It might be interesting to note. Before color TV. France went, High Definition. Back in the, early 1960s. Before they had color TV. Yes! Hi Definition Black & White at 850 lines of Resolution!. To the US 525 and UK/GmbH at 625 lines. 850 was wacky!
    But when they finally got color. They settled out for 625. Until years later when HD would come back. And I was there for some of that launch. I remember before we were 1080. Yeah. We were 1125. Ha! But they settled on compromise, 1080. And still, garbage interlacing! Where it still remains over the year today. But we've all gotten spoiled.
    Yes we have all gotten spoiled. Because our new displays are all, Progressive. And we are 1080 P on RUclips. But 1080 i, OTA, Over The Air, broadcast style. Ugh! This too shall change, soon. To, ATSC, 2.0 and it'll go Progressive. And all of that old, interlaced stuff will look like total garbage.. Like silent movies used to. And weren't in color like the Wizard of' Oz. At must've been a really depressing bomber to watch that movie all in black and white! That's an abomination!
    NTSC color video recorders were introduced in 1958. By Ampex. B & W in 1956.
