I’m from a big city with big “hoods”. I was surprised to see this city with so much heart and potential, in such need of rehabilitation. Gentrification may not ever happen here, but definitely some type of revitalization must.

I didn't recognize anything until you got to Derry Street! The Trash in the beginning is sad. After decades of diverting government money for public projects to city Island Senators baseball and downtown Restaurant row. Everyone say the city was nice when they lived there., why'd they leave? You obviously didn't go through the neighborhood I grew up in on the hill between State and Herr to the Bypass. There are nice areas uptown also physically during cold weather. The trash is due to the vacant houses/ dilapidated that should be torn down leveled off and grass planted. That's what Vartan did with his lots on 7th street. Also since sewage and water have been privatized and took over the highway department the road maintenance is lacking. The growing pains of the 80s and blacks becoming a democratic voting block hasn't produced experienced leaders. Political action doesn't need old age but younger experience, college degrees are great but there is a need for leaders to stay out there in the larger venues and get experience. I know of one lady who has national experience as a lawyer but she can't get elected because she's a black republican and won't pay the republican party $1400 for its endorsement. They would get her the 10 or so votes she loses by every election she's been in for city council. It's no longer a fad to run for City council or the school board. The respective party endorsement is county-wide and they city no longer has the clout or the votes. There was a chance for my generation to 'homestead ' and but houses in neighborhoods we grew up in but preferred the suburbs. Thing is wealth building many of us could have bought city houses and still built houses in the suburbs then there is a thing of the schools. Since we had same mayor for 28 years somebody voted for him! Also there is a term called UPKEEP- sales tax is not seen by government but real estate and business taxes are. Upkeep is written off as an expense by businesses and property owners.

Grew up in Hbg and cant reconize a place. Grew up in '60s. Spent alot of time with Grandma who lived on Regina St. Spent many happy snow days sliding down hills of Reservoir Park. Anyone know what they did with the elk that was taken down to build museum? Loved to bike to the 'outlook'. My sister and i walked to penn theatre on Market St for Saturday matanees. Good memories.
