I didn't recognize anything until you got to Derry Street! The Trash in the beginning is sad. After decades of diverting government money for public projects to city Island Senators baseball and downtown Restaurant row. Everyone say the city was nice when they lived there., why'd they leave? You obviously didn't go through the neighborhood I grew up in on the hill between State and Herr to the Bypass. There are nice areas uptown also physically during cold weather. The trash is due to the vacant houses/ dilapidated that should be torn down leveled off and grass planted. That's what Vartan did with his lots on 7th street. Also since sewage and water have been privatized and took over the highway department the road maintenance is lacking. The growing pains of the 80s and blacks becoming a democratic voting block hasn't produced experienced leaders. Political action doesn't need old age but younger experience, college degrees are great but there is a need for leaders to stay out there in the larger venues and get experience. I know of one lady who has national experience as a lawyer but she can't get elected because she's a black republican and won't pay the republican party $1400 for its endorsement. They would get her the 10 or so votes she loses by every election she's been in for city council. It's no longer a fad to run for City council or the school board. The respective party endorsement is county-wide and they city no longer has the clout or the votes.There was a chance for my generation to 'homestead ' and but houses in neighborhoods we grew up in but preferred the suburbs. Thing is wealth building many of us could have bought city houses and still built houses in the suburbs then there is a thing of the schools. Since we had same mayor for 28 years somebody voted for him! Also there is a term called UPKEEP- sales tax is not seen by government but real estate and business taxes are. Upkeep is written off as an expense by businesses and property owners.

These folks are definitely prime candidates that should consider returning to the warm and wonderful South, in particular Greenville South Carolina, it offers loads of section 8 housing, lots of government help for the asking and a much warmer climate. Why wait , Greenville is welcoming all families that moved to the Harrisburg area in the 1920's and 30's. You will love it, especially it's downtown.
Probably was trash day. I’m a resident of the city and we do have weekly curbside trash and recycling service! Although some apartments can get some pretty scuzzy and overflowing bins. The refuse on vacant lots and strewn around is a different story. I’m always getting stuff blown in my front flower bed.

You ought to drive down Thompson St. I transport school children. Dilapidated homes, junked cars, a burned out home, alot of blight. Very sad to see people have to live like this.

A lot of people don’t pay the collection fee, property owners have to pay to get the trash picked up it’s not free.
