I am listening on November 6th 2020 and thank you for your teachings of Hope and personal responsibility. It is easy to drown in despair during this time, but I am enlightened by your overview of the thread of happiness that runs through this Book-- if I look to myself and partake of the Fruit of the Tree. Your inspired lessons have deeply touched and taught me this year. All I have is Thank You but pray the depth from which it comes, touches you both.

Thanks for your comments. I don't think we should read Mormon 8:35-41 and think that it means only other churches, and other people. This book was written for our day, and the people who have this book are members of the church - these verses are speaking to baptized members of the church specifically, and all the churches of our day, generally. "Why have ye polluted the holy church of God?" and "Why are ye ashamed to take upon you the name of Christ?" (in verse 38) That's us! Amulek said the same things to the members of the church in his day: Alma 34:38. We can learn a lot from these verses if we do not push them off to be talking about other churches and other people...in my opinion. This is true throughout the Book of Mormon (see 2 Nephi 28:19-25 - as just one example) - that's us! Amazingly, there are active members of the church today that do not believe in miracles or revelation in their own lives - that is the spirit of unbelief and that is what Mormon/Moroni is talking about, I think.

Mormon warned of secret combinations in the modern church. So did Nephi (the first one). We know that there is much opposition to the church that is public, but it's hard to see the sneaky opposition that Satan just loves to stir up within the church. :( We all just need to learn and live the gospel in its fullness and not be involved in "secret works."

I have a friend worried that there is racism in the Book of Mormon. How can I explain these verses in a non-racist way?
(2 Ne. 5 : 21) And he had caused the cursing to come upon them, yea, even a sore cursing, because of their iniquity. For behold, they had hardened their hearts against him, that they had become like unto a flint; wherefore, as they were white, and exceedingly fair and delightsome, that they might not be enticing unto my people the Lord God did cause a skin of blackness to come upon them.
(2 Ne. 30 : 6) And then shall they rejoice; for they shall know that it is a blessing unto them from the hand of God; and their scales of darkness shall begin to fall from their eyes; and many generations shall not pass away among them, save they shall be a white [pure, 1981] and a delightsome people.
(Jacob 3 : 5) Behold, the Lamanites your brethren, whom ye hate because of their filthiness and the cursing which hath come upon their skins
(3 Ne. 2 : 14-16) And it came to pass that those Lamanites who had united with the Nephites were numbered among the Nephites; 15 And their curse was taken from them, and their skin became white like unto the Nephites; 16 And their young men and their daughters became exceedingly fair, and they were numbered among the Nephites, and were called Nephites.

Thanks Cranston. Good question. We have addressed this issue in two other podcasts and you can read into this in some of the notes we have posted. I think we "read" scripture with clouded eyes when we strictly read it through a lens that is strictly in the present. We should work to read these texts as they (the ancients) would have read them. This can be challenging, but is worth the work.
You might want to start here:

      3. www.fairmormon.org/archive/publications/what-does-the-book-of-mormon-mean-by-skin-of-blackness
Ethan Sproat has also written about this extensively...
“Ultimately, the text of the Book of Mormon lends itself in many ways to the interpretation that the skins of various colors have nothing to do with flesh pigmentation but are rather ritual garments of some sort that can accommodate a whole range of textual data. Not only are there textual motivations for thinking that marks associated with curses were self-applied and removable in a nonbiological sense, it is also possible to explain strictly in terms of comparable biblical narratives how such marks and curses might have been passed from generation to generation in the form of ritual garments or authoritative clothing made of animal skin.” 1
Earlier he makes the point that:
…it is difficult to overstate the importance of the Nephite temple in everything that follows… textual evidences suggest that the Nephite temple served not only as a physical metaphor for “the presence of the Lord” (2 Nephi 5:17-20), but also as the ideological backdrop to the deep cultural and religious conflicts between the Nephites and their various enemies. Indeed, the Nephite temple emerges as the central theme in the question of the various-colored skins in the Book of Mormon.
Such realizations begin with a basic textual observation: four of the six ambiguous passages related to skin color or skin curses have the Nephite temple as their context. For instance, 2 Nephi 5:21-25 is bookended by the building of the first Nephite temple (see 2 Nephi 5:16) and the consecration of Jacob and Joseph as priests (see 2 Nephi 5:26). The next three ambiguous passages appear in Jacob 3:5, 8, 9 within the context of a discourse delivered in the first Nephite temple. A fifth passage, Alma 3:5-6-while not explicitly referring to the temple-notes that certain skins were darkened because of the conflict that took place at the time of the first Nephite temple as described in 2 Nephi 5:16-26. This overarching temple context suggests that garment-skins may somehow have been associated with the Nephite temple and (more specifically) that the Nephites may have used skins as an item of temple clothing.2
