I have Airplane ear. I have not flew in a few years due to this. But, this year for my Birthday I decided I wanted to travel. I came across 2 type of earplugs you can use while in flight. I purchased Flyfit earplugs and Earplane earplugs. I decided to use Flyfit for my going and coming back flight and I didn’t feel any ear pain or head pressure like I usually feel! I kept them in the whole flight 2 1/2 hours. They worked like a charm. I was so pleased with them. I have not yet used my Earplanes earplugs but I will write a review once I do. But I know for sure Flyfit works! I also took sudafed and benadryl a few days in a role leading up to the day of my flight and 1 hour before departure. I hate the old airplane ear. I can’t get excited about landing because as the plane descends, the air pressure starts to build up inside and it hurts so bad. Usually, if you yawn, chew gum or open your mouth really wide, your ears will pop and the air is released. The only problem with this is that it also hurts to do this because your ears pop lol
None of that works for me. I have tried everything you said but every time on decent I get so much pain it feels like my head is about to explode. My last trip overseas I finally found something that works for me. I was using earplugs the type you squeeze to put in your ear and headphone that goes around the ear. After doing that I had no problem. I think these ear plugs should be given to everyone with a baby. Each flight I take I ALWAYS hear babies crying as the plan is descending and the poor baby can't tell anyone how much this hurts. Parents please plugs your babies ears.

It can be of benefit when there is a mild amount of blockage. It depends upon how severe the Eustachian tube blockage is. If it is extremely severe, it can even take putting in ear tubes to be able to fly.

I was a person who traveled constantly by plane and never had any kind of pain in my ears, until I once traveled with the flu and had barotrauma for 1 month, after that trip I promised not to travel by plane again, I am very afraid , I bought Macks and Flyfit brand earplugs but I don't dare to travel by plane again. even when I travel through the mountains every 100 meters of altitude when descending my ears pop and before that did not happen to me
Prolly one of the worst pains I’ve felt. My head felt like it was going to explode . I recently was congested on a 3 hours flight and wanted to kill my self . Couldn’t hear normally for a week
I have one sided aeroplane ear (on my right) wht i'd do is the The Valsalva Maneuver. Close your mouth, pinch your nostrils together, and blow softly. This method will equalize the pressure in your Eustachian tubes, but be careful not to blow too hard so you don't damage your eardrums ( info from internet) you might need to do it couple of times during flight. That worked for me hopefully it works on u toooo
So if you take them during the flight between the ascend and decent the pressure isn't going to just flood in/out? I'm going on my first flight across the US and I'm nervous about my ear pressure from experience driving through the mountains.
I'm so scared. I always have problems with my ears and neck when flying, and this time I have a middle ear infection and dizziness as a consequence of the flu but must fly tomorrow. I hope these techniques help me and I don't end up deaf or with another ear issue. I'll update whether these helped, as there might be other people who must fly but have middle ear issues
I recently flew back home and as soon as I went to bed I had pressure in my ears and my right one started giving me noise it has become unbearable especially when sleeping 😅
I have tried literally every single one of the remedies in this video, and none have ever worked for me. Every time I fly, my head feels like someone has jammed an ice pick into each ear. It is SO painful that I get delirious and can’t concentrate. I dread flying because of the intense searing pain. The last time I flew I couldn’t hear anything for several days and my inner ear didn’t stop hurting until ten days after landing. And it’s not just flying; I can’t even drive up into the mountains without severe ear pain.
I find that alcohol really helps. But I don't get pain. Just deafness and a feeling of pressure. It soon sorts itself out once we reach cruising altitude. On descent, I can usually clear it just by swallowing. On the way up, I need a good genuine yawn to clear it.
The last flight i was on scared me to death. So excruciatingly painful. I went on a trip for my birthday and returned with a ruptured eardrum which left me dizzy for a full week. Horrific. Dr. Manta, Would Balloon Sinuplasty procedure be a fix for this airplane ear issue, I was told that I had some blockage in my sinus passages that potentially would result in my suffering with this airplane ear issue. I have tried some of the methods you have discussed with no relief. Only time resolves my muffled hearing after flying.
A balloon sinuplasty would not help. That being said, there is now a procedure to dilate the Eustachian tube using similar or even the same balloons. It has been, in my own experience, about a 50/50 proposition, but really no downside to trying it

hey, i’m having the same issue right now. i had a flight 3 days ago, and my left ear is still not normal (as if there’s pressure on it). do you have tips?
Not much, in all likelihood. The ears still have to equalize to cabin pressure during the flight. The Ear Planes are constructed to specifically allow the middle ear pressures to equalize, but to do it slowly.

I've had trouble with this my whole life and finally went to an ENT who recommended Afrin nasal spray, which usually helps (not always; right now my ears are still blocked 12 hrs after a flight :( ). But the Valsalva maneuver has never worked for me. Is there anything I can do regularly at home to "exercise" my Eustachian tubes? Is it true that avoiding dairy products can help reduce inflammation in sinuses and ears?
I'm not sure you can do anything to "exercise" your Eustachian tube. Dairy is an allergen for a lot of people, so that might be a good thing to try to avoid. The Valsalva and Toynbee maneuvers are just helping your Eustachian tubes to work better, but they aren't intrinsically doing anything to "exercise" them. For some people, none of the things outlined work. At that point, further options are putting tubes into the eardrums or doing a Eustachian tube dilation, either in the office or under anaesthesia, to help prevent this pain.
@@markyantamd5338 since ear tubes are meant to be temporary and fall out, how many procedures can a person do over the years where it isn’t completely damaging the ear drum?
@@jennifersalvage-style7798 You can put in long lasting tubes, called T tubes or butterfly tubes, that can last a long, long time. Tubes do not always do damage to the eardrum. Sometimes there is scarring and sometimes there is not.

@@catinthehatworshipper1160 I've had nightmares with flying. I remember having these for years, the plane was about to take off and I just was waiting for my ears to start aching. I hate planes.
I used to fly airplanes to China every 2 years before a grandfather passed away! My grandfather had Type 2 diabetes! Elevations and altitude are my biggest obsessions around!
I was a person who traveled constantly by plane and never had any kind of pain in my ears, until I once traveled with the flu and had barotrauma for 1 month, after that trip I promised not to travel by plane again, I am very afraid , I bought Macks and Flyfit brand earplugs but I don't dare to travel by plane again. even when I travel through the mountains every 100 meters of altitude when descending my ears pop and before that did not happen to me
Sounds like you can apply the Valsalva maneuver while having earplugs in, right?
You can do that. If you are wearing EarPlanes, you will get a more gradual change in pressure.

@@wes_333 yeah haven’t had it happen in a while. I flew about 30 times so far this year and I used “Ear planes”
Thank you for this video
I have one sided aeroplane ear (on my right) wht i'd do is the The Valsalva Maneuver. Close your mouth, pinch your nostrils together, and blow softly. This method will equalize the pressure in your Eustachian tubes, but be careful not to blow too hard so you don't damage your eardrums ( info from internet) you might need to do it couple of times during flight. That worked for me hopefully it works on u toooo
Works everytime... I was wondering after reading hundreds of suffering tales why no one used this simple method...
My left ear gets a sharp feeling during a flight . It hurts when i try to blow the air out
So if you take them during the flight between the ascend and decent the pressure isn't going to just flood in/out? I'm going on my first flight across the US and I'm nervous about my ear pressure from experience driving through the mountains.
How did it go? Im also nervous
Thank you so much for this❤
Thank you, Amazing video
Just flew like actually flew 7 mins and my ears were going crazy
How do pilots manage an airplane ear?
They get habitual
How to travel with eustachian tube dysfunction?

I'm so scared. I always have problems with my ears and neck when flying, and this time I have a middle ear infection and dizziness as a consequence of the flu but must fly tomorrow. I hope these techniques help me and I don't end up deaf or with another ear issue. I'll update whether these helped, as there might be other people who must fly but have middle ear issues
I recently flew back home and as soon as I went to bed I had pressure in my ears and my right one started giving me noise it has become unbearable especially when sleeping 😅
This is similar to the experience I had on a 9hr flight
Horrific.
Im a second year tourism student and we will need to travel more on planes i desperately hope these work for me. I hate being scared of something that makes me so happy😔

Dr. Manta,
Would Balloon Sinuplasty procedure be a fix for this airplane ear issue, I was told that I had some blockage in my sinus passages that potentially would result in my suffering with this airplane ear issue. I have tried some of the methods you have discussed with no relief. Only time resolves my muffled hearing after flying.
A balloon sinuplasty would not help. That being said, there is now a procedure to dilate the Eustachian tube using similar or even the same balloons. It has been, in my own experience, about a 50/50 proposition, but really no downside to trying it
I had sinusitis for 13weeks. Waiting on surgery. Had no choice to fly interstate for a funeral. My ear will not unblock i chew gum, put ear plugs in upon descending and its been 10hours since having landed, I cant gear a thing out of my right ear and the pain us excruciating. I've used nasal sprays, nothing will unblock it. Any suggestions here?
How are you feeling now? When that happened to me, it slowly healed over about a month.
