  • We stand on our feet and rarely think about them much. For the martial artist, though, feet are like the foundation of a building. Paying attention to how we place and move our feet allow us to place our balance on top of carefully built foundation.

Patient and thoughtful instruction, and more use than you can ever imagine. It's all about the basics, get them right and the belts follow.

Thank you Joel. As a beginner I like the explanations of why we do things, center of gravity and balance while moving slowly and quickly, knee protection and the idea of O'Sensei practicing on footwork for an hour each day says it all! It is also interesting to be able to see the opponent telegraph his body motion. Again as a beginner, to show me technique without a reason why I am doing it slows my learning as do some other videos do but in your case I am learning to a fuller extent. Thanks

+Rich Coffman Check out the book: Aikido and the Dynamic Sphere. It's an excellent companion to lessons.

it's not dull basic stuff. It might be to the higher echelons of aikido that have forgotten the basics and dont want to do that anymore though. Aikido is a never ending lesson for me and i appreciate yours so thanks for taking the time to show us. NIce grin girl lol

Thanks so much! Irimi, Tenkan‎, and Tenshin... 10 year techniques... Interesting... I was taught to perform Irimi at 45 degrees...rather than step in at 90 degree...

Thank you for sharing this video. I think it's very brave to put yourself out there.
If I may, I would like to raise some queries over your propositions.
When moving, your weight appears to be unbalanced and shifts back when it shouldn't, this leaves you terribly off balance and in an extremely weak position.
When practicing these basic movements shouldn't your centre always be slightly forwards, thus generating a strong and unified posture?
When practicing turning, should you really lift you foot from the mat? As, again, this would seem to leave your posture significantly weakened and open to being overwhelmed. Thank you for considering my points, I mean no disrespect.

You're probably referring to my daughter's smile. Thanks. We have a lot of fun practicing aikido together. As long as we don't break anything, we're allowed to practice at home.

Does anybody else see the Sensei's resemblance to Michael Sandel?
